Johannesburg - Singer Steve Hofmeyr says he can "almost associate" with rock musicians who want to hold a "777" concert in Pretoria to warn people against the dangers of religion.

The groups Architects of Aggression (AOA), the Slashdogs, Ruhtz, Far Beyond Driven, Prevail and All Forlorn, will perform at the concert at The Arc in Hazelwood, Pretoria.

Wrust, a band of four from Botswana, is the seventh rock group who will perform of July 7, the seventh day of the seventh month, at the concert dedicated to freedom of religion.

"We have the freedom to choose between religions. Now we want freedom from religion," said Anton Alberts, AOA's drummer.

The concert promised to cause a stir among South African believers. According to Alberts the aim of the concert was not to attack a particular religion, but rather warn against dangers of religion.

Bloodiest wars in history

"Religion has been part of humanity since the beginning. It has also been responsible for some of the bloodiest battles in history.

"Whether it has been in the name of Ramses, Yaweh, Aries, Allah or Christ, the human rights abuses and all the other acts remain unforgivable and unforgettable."

Alberts believes that religion was necessary when people were still looking for answers about natural phenomena, seasons and creation, but modern man has long since evolved beyond that point.

"In the modern era sex education for teenagers and open relations between parents and children are much more effective than the church's archaic and conservative policy of remaining quiet and looking away."

According to Hofmeyr he could almost associate with these "guys".

"Throughout my life, manmade religion has always come between me and my God.

"A similar debate on my blog on Tuesday about the fact that two of the most holy nations in the world (the US and Iraq) were still involved in a senseless war, confirmed their argument," said Hofmeyr.

Arguments 'unfounded and foolish'

He also referred to 2 Corinthians 11:14, which is about the danger of Satan (the proverbial crook) appearing as an angel of light instead of someone that you would despise.

Dr Isak Burger, president of the Apostolic Faith Mission, said these groups' arguments were unfounded and foolish.

"I believe the movement is demonic and inspired by Satan, but that Christians don't have to feel threatened, because God is stronger than Satan.

"Nearly 20 000 people in Africa daily become Christians, which proves that predictions that the end of the church is near, are absurd.

"The concert is instead a reaction to the world's biggest prayer day which will be held across the world on May 27," he said.

Let all Christians pray on that day, in Christ's name the effects of this concert will be meaningless.

Sounds like a sorry group of people looking for their 15 minutes of fame. A godless person, is a lost person for sure.

For people to go to such lengths to express their feelings against religion, must mean that they are threatened by it. Otherwise they would just keep quiet. Maybe something touched a nerve with them? It is because of lack of religion that this country finds itself in the state its in. We need more people like Jaco vd Westhuizen who are not afraid to stand up in public, in a positive way, for what they believe in. This concert is as Dr Burger says - demonic. Jesus is King.

The religious never look at their own failings. They have led the world to wars & atrocities of all kinds, yet they always take the moral high ground. Our society doesn't function properly. The religious remain hidden in their denial, refusing to look at the real damage caused by their beliefs. I have lost faith in them and their gods. With religion out of my way, i know that i am responsible for the world around me. It makes me happy to know i can take my power back from their invisible friend.

The article is of falsehood and deception. It is not the entire SA THAT HAS THE SAME BELIEF OF THESE satanic musicians, who use WAR to MOVE people away from religion. The WAR in iraq is all about money and oil and about the fall of the US ECONOMY.BEWARE OF SATANIC MUSICIANS.

Why do Christians always say that it is Satanistic or demonic forces when someone has a different view to their religion? Man has evolved and does have a different view on life then eons ago. Personally, I'm tired of having to endure and be forced to put up with the constant barrage of religion.

Honest Frank 5/23/2007 10:56:42 AM
Maybe Dr Burger should examine his own arguments before calling others' "unfounded and foolish".

Anon 5/23/2007 10:57:21 AM
The concert has nothing to do with the prayer day and isn't in reaction to it. What an unfounded and dumb statement to make.

The movement against religion has resulted in millions of christians praying for these bands and their members. I call that a victory for christianity!

Nico 5/23/2007 11:08:18 AM
Just a short comment: the bands playing are un known idiots and want to make a name for the selve. And for steve to say he agrees just shows his contempt for God. But what can you expect from some one that needs Jurie Else and 7de Laan to keep him in public eye!!! But every one of them will stand befor that same God they now shun and will bow there knee to him!!! My God have mursy on there soals I pray!!!!

Here we go again, Christians jumping up down screaming DEMONS and SATANISTS. This is so funny. Why can't you understand that YOUR religion is just that: YOURS. It is not mine, and not the person next to you. Realise that your religion is subjective, and tolerate (maybe even accept?) the views of others. The world will be a better place if there were no religion. Just imagine.

Gavin Mannion 5/23/2007 11:10:44 AM
I can see everyone going insane about this but I don't see anything wrong with it. Religion is all fine and well but people should be allowed freedom from religion and it should not be forced onto people.

Monica 5/23/2007 11:11:08 AM
They are all cowards; they try to influence young teenagers by using popular music they all listen to? So that these teenagers think it is COOL not to believe? Why not argue your beliefs with facts that PROVE no God exist? Because you have no argument perhaps?! We were warned against people (Satan?s disciples) like them. We are not worried, but we will pray for their souls. They are warning people against the only " way" to save their souls.
