Murvar says... What an odd set of comments! There is no " fair" way of handling a tournament like this - only a more or less unfair one. EG - the allocation of places to various continents involves a judgement about how many each continent merits; if at qualifying stages it was " all the teams into one bowl" then you might have San Marino or the Faroe Islands travelling to play New Zealand, or Zambia going to Argentina - totally impractical and unnecessary. Deciding to have 16, 24 or 32 nations at the finals can be seen as "unfair" - why not 64? Another judgement. Does the world want to see a bunch of minnows all in one group so that a quality team like say Brazil is excluded when they would have walked such a group? Is that "fair"? If the host is to get a bye - as it always does - does it go into the seedings as no 1,2,3 or 4 in a group? Which is fair? I think the amount of work the host nation has to put in justifies a no1 or 2 seeding so that its people have a slightly increased chance of seeing it progress; after all, they are the ones who have had to put up with all the construction work and the inconvenience it has caused on roads and at airports etc. Why so many of you lot seem to interpret everything in terms of Africa's begging bowl mentality or its perceived incompetence mystifies me (as a white foreigner). The SA World Cup will be wonderful! SA will enjoy it and visitors will love it! I guess that's what worries you white misery-guts types - that people will form a good impression of your country when you clearly hate it so much cos you don't control it outright any more.
