Why are you voting?

by
2009-04-15 11:54

Cape Town - What are the biggest issues that you will keep in mind when you go the polls on April 22?

Health, HIV/Aids, economy, crime and education: Which of these issues are the most important to you? When you chose which party to vote for, were any of these issues the deciding factor?

A lot of voters are concerned about the crime rate in South Africa. Has your party made their stance on this issue clear enough for you to throw your support behind it? If you don't like your party's policy on crime, would you vote for a party that has a policy you agree with?

With just a few days to go before you vote, News24 would like to know why you're voting for the party of your choice.

If you still haven't made up your mind on who to vote for, read the policies of various parties here.

I am voting for a white Govnt, ie DA, because they seem to be able to think with their head and not their heart. I whish voters in SA will do the same on 22nd. NO THIS IS NOT RACISM, AS IM SURE MANY WILL THROW THE RACIST CARD AT THIS.

Jorene 4/15/2009 2:55:13 PM
I know who I will be voting for. The DA of course.

Phinah 4/15/2009 3:49:13 PM
Education & jobs

Risenga 4/15/2009 4:17:43 PM
Our coutry is struggling to provide jobs, because the ruling party it is sure that, even though people don't have jobs and drinking water, the same peoplehave no choice, they will continue to vote for them, because they think there is only on epolitical party in RSA. Our politician are corrupt and no one can touch them because they have got morethan two thirds majority in parliment, and if they wan floor crossing they get it, if they want to disband Scorpion, they dob it with an ease.

Mr. X 4/15/2009 4:20:05 PM
I agree with the ANC's manifesto hence I'll be voting. But Mr. Mbalula's recent artcile makes it a painful excercise to keep supporting the ruling party. He should at least learn, at least on this subject matter, from Malema. If he becomes a Minister or a member of cabinet in whatever capacity (even as a cleaner) I'll regret voting for the ANC for the rest of my life!!!

Brian 4/15/2009 6:24:23 PM
Hopefuly to prevent the ANC from getting a 2/3rds majority. Because if they do we will be in worse shape than Zimbabwe in 5 years.

Eric 4/15/2009 6:50:29 PM
I will vote for the DA for two reasons [1] I agree with their policies [2] It's utterly critical to stop Zuma and the ANC (read SACP) getting two thirds of the vote and changing the constitution as they wish. In this case, it doesn't matter who you vote for, as long as it is not for the SA(N)CP. This is the election that will decide whether SA collapses into a corrupt socialist dictatorship or has a chance. THINK! DON'T VOTE FOR THE ANC - they will win anyway, but help limit their lust for power.

Andre Frey 4/15/2009 8:55:46 PM
The DA is the clever choice. Apartheid wasted enough time with the development of our country, why should people back the ANC when it is doing exactly the same?

Jo 4/15/2009 9:33:11 PM
I can't vote as I am a (long term)permanent resident resident only. I would have voted DA!

Anonymous 4/15/2009 10:45:43 PM
I want to be positive about sa but everyday I read the press there is negative stories about sa today. I dont think sa election results will be genuine as the results will be rigged to suit the anc.

gumrol 4/16/2009 7:28:34 AM
Good policies are not enough for my vote. I need to see that the party has ACTED on their policies. It's far from a colour thing, its a results thing for me. Using crime as an example, ANC has a great policy on crime, yet under them the scorpions are gone, corruption in govt. doesn't even MAKE it to court, the leader still has a solid case against him, 2nd in command is acting like a criminal, inciting violence with his dangerous outbursts. Where's the tough stance guys? You don't get my vote

Fred Basset 4/16/2009 7:34:41 AM
The current leadership makes me embarrassed to be a South African. If we do not get off our butts and do our part (VOTE) we will never get rid of the filthy muck who are running this great country into the sewer.

DA 4/16/2009 8:00:17 AM
DA is the only party to vote for; Zille for president !

Boitumelo 4/16/2009 8:34:23 AM
The past ANC administration has made me proud to say i am South African with its achievements both locally and internationally,as I go into this coming election I will keep that in mind,Yes I am not saying they were perfect but WORKING TOGETHER with them to correct all the wrongs of the past and preparing for a better future for all South Africans that live in it WE CAN DO MORE...VIVA ANC VIVA

corrie 4/16/2009 8:40:56 AM
Does a "none vote" automatically go to the ANC as a "vote" ??

John 4/16/2009 8:45:53 AM
Simple: For a government that has delivery and implementation strongly positioned on its agenda. And definitely not one that has 15 years of hot wind under its belt!!!

David 4/16/2009 9:02:29 AM
The only party that will readdress the past imbalances,eg. job opportunities, housing, free education etc is the ANC.Vote for the better live, vote the ANC.

Anonymous 4/16/2009 10:21:15 AM
Many South Africans will once again remember where they coming from on the 22/04 and will clearly recall the evils of APARTHEID to mankind in RSA. Don't Waste your vote, vote ANC, after all what is 15 years v/s decades of apartheid regime and the abuse of Humanrights- Anonymous

VG 4/16/2009 10:33:38 AM
crime & service delivery. As far as manifesto's go, I think the ANC's plans win hands down. Most other party manifesto's are simply a copy and paste of the original. However, the ANC's delivery track record is bleak to say the least, leaving me in a major quandary.

BLACKsoWHAT! 4/16/2009 10:45:22 AM
Between the Bourgeoisie (cope) and the autocrats (ANC) bt not the Aristocrats (DA) or tribalists (IFP)/(FF+).Truth be told none of them have nothing to offer me at this stage bt i'll still vote.

gumrol 4/16/2009 11:19:42 AM
Please let me know what "achievements both locally and internationally" the ANC gained. I'm all ears.

gumrol 4/16/2009 11:32:50 AM
Lets break it down like this. Say there are 10 voters in total, and you are 1. 6 Vote ANC, 4 Vote elsewhere (including you). 6/10 is not a 2/3rds majority, 6.6666 is. Say you don't vote however. 6 Votes ANC, 3 votes elsewhere, thats 6/9 for the ANC, and IS a 2/3rds majority. So in this case, it only takes 10% of the voters apathetic to the vote, because they're dissolutioned or lazy or think there vote doesn't count to sway things. If in doubt, vote for the 2nd strongest party.

Thumbe 4/16/2009 1:26:30 PM
The DA is the best choice. Cape Town is enough proof of what they can do. Christian values, adequite crime prevention methods, proper service delivery, high education standards and equality for all races in the job market are what we need.

Werner 4/16/2009 1:46:03 PM
The question of who to vote for or not to vote for is a fairly simple process. If a government is truly working for a better life for their people then the signs of a better life would be clearly visible. Instead what we have seen the last 15 years is a steady decline in the quality of life of ALL South Africans irrespective of race or any other creed. The number of poor have increased and the poor have just gotten poorer. You do the math...

Johan M. Strijdom 4/16/2009 6:00:45 PM
I used to vote HNP and FF, now its ANC all the way. That's where my bread is buttered, they get my vote! I'm not skaam of being called a turncoat. As a proffessional theologian I vote with my conshience. Zum has been crucified, and Zuma will rise from the ashes again. Hes my man! Boers, vote for Zuma and Mugabe!

SA Citizen 4/17/2009 1:11:52 PM
The ANC has had their turn for 15 years and failed to deliver wake up SA and place your vote elsewhere! I will cast my vote to stop a 2/3 majority! I will vote for the DA as I want a CRIME FREE SAFE SA TO LIVE, WORK & PLAY IN! For ME, My Childeren, FAMILY & FRIENDS!

Juan 4/17/2009 4:06:02 PM
WHAT achievments are you talking about? Rape capitol of the world? Aids capitol of the world? Corruption Capotol of the world? Violent crime capitol of the world? Ok, the anc DID achieve these things in record time, but how utterly utterly primitive and barbaric must you be to see this kind of death and destruction as a good thing?!!?

oral 4/17/2009 4:10:21 PM
DA, becuase they are the only proven opposition party that will keep the ANC in check, I really dont mind if the ANC win again and they will, but they dont need my vote they have millions so the clever thing to do is vote for the strongest opposition to avoid the total control situation, which all eductaed people will know is the most dangerous thing that can happen in any country! Learn from the past and vote with your head not your heart!

Wernardt 4/17/2009 4:18:57 PM
Accountable government via representative party lists. Sustainable job creation. Effective policing via increased salaries and increased number of police. Non-racialism. No criminals in parliament. Broad based empowerment (who spreads that nonsense that the DA is anti-empowerment?), effective land redistribution (who spreads the lies that the DA wants to bring back apartheid?). The DA has the policies and the ability to implement (see Cape Town). One nation, one future.

Exiled 4/17/2009 4:32:53 PM
I was legally prevented from voting and therefore did not register, now I can vote but cant because I am not registered. This is how my countries regime treats me. I if could it would be DA. Their intentions have always been clear they are moral and focused on the true short and long term needs of the people. If Zille was president there would be a shocking difference. The ANC keeps their cadres in the dirt while they plunder. 200 million to keep the so called believers believing, shame your president steals from you!

Annie 4/17/2009 4:33:08 PM
Vote DA. Zille is strong and level headed. The DA stands for ALL and they will deliver to ALL.

Ted Smith 4/17/2009 4:33:40 PM
1) For democracy 2) For all the poor people 3) End racism of Government 4) To allow SA to become a First World Country 5) For my children sake

Lee 4/17/2009 4:34:49 PM
strongest opposition will always get my vote even if i supported ANC I wouldnt vote ANC ! The serving/ruling party need to know that the opposition is getting stronger and they need to stay on their toes. so its DA ..all the way

Pete 4/17/2009 4:41:55 PM
all the way. They have the best track record!

MJS 4/17/2009 4:48:24 PM
We cannot allow SA to become a one party communist state. Our education system has been hi-jacked by crazed idealistic OBE freaks. Service delivery has become a misnommer. I am sick of paying for a Rolls-Royce and only receiving a beatup VW Beetle. Government hospitals must be run as businesses, if they are not good enough they will not receive funding.

Brandy 4/17/2009 5:03:15 PM
Couldn't you just say "I'll vote for the DA"?Why must you say "I'll vote for a white gov"?Then you expect people not to call you racist?Come on,read that nonsense you typed and tell me if that sounds non-racist to you.

the o' jays 4/17/2009 5:13:51 PM
all parties are useless' i dont know which party to vote for. They are steam blowers, once in power they forget the voters

jen 4/17/2009 5:20:35 PM
We need to stop the ANC from getting a 2/3 majority. DA has a good record of delivery (HZ, world's best mayor). I also like their stance against corruption. COPE might become a viable, inclusive opposition to the ANC. Lekota is impressive, I dont know enough about Dandala.

Leon van Greunen 4/17/2009 5:43:09 PM
Very definitely the DA. Why? Leadership, Integrity, accountability and the skills base to govern and deliver. Look at the great job they've done in Cape Town. In addition non-racisit Equal opportunities for all South Africans & the constitution will not be changed to entrench a one party state. Proudly I'll vote for the DA!

Pete 4/17/2009 6:27:44 PM
I'm tired of the corruption, cronyism and general incomptence of the current government - espcialy in the Eastern Cape. I will wake up early on Wednesday and ensure that I am first in line to vote DA!

VOTE TO WIN A SAFE, NON-RACIAL SA! 4/17/2009 6:32:17 PM
I've seen the justice system raped,ALL government controlled departments collapse and corruption of the most blatant from the ANC. The DA have worked hard and seeing the fruits of their labour is believing they are PRODUCTIVE and NON-RACIST. The DA deserves all the votes - it's clear as day why...

Bemused 4/17/2009 8:25:34 PM
I'm going to get shot down for saying this but, I have never voted, ever. In the apartheid days I couldn't find it in my heart to vote for the then horrible system. In 1994 I wasn't in the country. Now I can't find it in my heart to vote for the a horrible system that appears to be determined to trash the democracy that we all wanted so badly. Anyway, it is now up to the majority to do their thing and all I can say is that the old adage is true, you get the government you deserve.

Mpho 4/17/2009 10:16:09 PM
Everybody in our household voted ANC in 1994 , but today we're all too ambarrassed to admit it ; foreigners are calling SA a rogue state !! Shame on you ANC ! Where are the young ANC bright sparks ? Why do you allow Zuma,Malema & cronies to ruin our country ? How many competent Ministers & MEC's can you count on your fingers ? Only a few are mentioned in newspapers - Manual, Tito & now Hogan ! Also Pravin from SARS get the pass mark ! But that is it !! The ANC needs a leader with credibillity.

Anonymous 4/18/2009 8:27:45 AM
The ANC failed to provide a high standard of education, kids can't even read properly anymore. I believe education is the key to economic growth. The DA will set high standards.

Tego 4/18/2009 9:15:40 AM
Against ANC: Arms deal corruption, Aids denialism, foreign policy that has consistently supported dictatorships and human rights abusers, BEE (partly), massive nepotism, lack of transparency, arrogance, readiness to abuse state institutions in the interests of the party, skills development failure For ANC: Stable economic policy and growth, child support grants, housing, BEE (partly), legislative reform I think its time to change my vote to the DA but feel free to add yours +s and -s

Listening to a debate on Etv...many of them now. Fearless leaders, with Zuma always absent..hiding somewhere. How can he take part in a debate where the main issues are crime and corruption...even he would have to hang his head in shame and would not be able to look anyone else there in the eye. Wish he could take a polygraph test. YES VOTE FOR ANYONE BUT THE ANC...MAY GOD HELP THE HELPLESS AND IGORANT SEE AND REALISE HOW THEY HAVE BEEN TRODDEN ON, LIED AND CHEATED THESE LAST YEARS. I AM DA!!!

davemc 4/18/2009 10:57:11 AM
I am voting for the ANC because I want my free stuff.

Charles 4/18/2009 11:06:14 AM
The destruction of our country and all its residents, no matter color or creed, is in your hands. Vote ANC and destruction is eminent. Don?t vote and your generous contribution will gladly be accepted by JZ and his demolishing team. You do not have an option, YOU MUST VOTE for anybody but the ANC

TC 4/18/2009 11:13:53 AM
I once asked a black friend who complained about the corruption in the police force why he then keeps on voting for the ANC, his answer was the ANC is the only party that will keep apartheid from coming back - this is what a lot of people believe - you can imagine my absulote disbelief! My question is do other parties even know what the voters fears and beliefs are??

Lesole 4/18/2009 12:37:21 PM
A week ago 2 white women told me straight that "all the black f@$*s will be voting for the ANC and they are stupid, what did blacks do in the past 15 years". From this comments it is simple that i will never vote for the DA, but ANC i will. Look most whites don't like blacks, with the white man back guess what BBEE will be WEE.I have lost brother in the struggle and now give away my vote to reinstate them after decades of blood shedding. Talk of justice rape Non Racist ask my brothers and father.

Poloyatonki 4/18/2009 1:58:03 PM
My vote belongs to ANC now and forever. Piet this election has nothing to do with race so please dont say DA is white gorverment, Unless you are living Jan Van Riebbecks era.Or shut the fak up

wayne 4/18/2009 2:10:03 PM
It is in the ANC's best interests that our country remains largely uneducated. People are easier to control when they are uneducated. Vote DA and lets educate our people on what a real governemnt should look like. The current government reminds me of a trip to th circus as a child.

WAYNE 4/18/2009 2:13:08 PM
So many of my friends also voted ANC in 1994 but now hang their heads in shame, to embarassed to admit it. As the great Winston Churchill put it: "you can fool some of the people some of the time, but you cant fool all the people all of the time."

Poloyatonki 4/18/2009 2:27:31 PM
ANC owns my Vote and I am happy about that.

JF 4/18/2009 2:53:37 PM
I stayed in Jo'burg all my life and though the governance was OK. Then I moved to Cape Town a year ago, and I cannot believe what a major difference good governance can make. It is maybe not perfect yet, but the DA is really doing excellent work here. I feel safe (even at night), they are fighting poverty (you read about initiatives in the local newspapers), and there is little to no corruption. I am proud of CT and feel that the city is being revitalised slowly. Well done DA!

Neall 4/18/2009 3:07:54 PM
This has already been stated, but I'm adding my vote as I believe the ANC should be prevented for gaining a 2/3 (or 3/3 as Julias Mampara put it). If they (ANC) gain 2/3rd's then hello another Zimbabwe, because we're already on that slippery road to self destruction beacuse of greed. Power corrupts! Viva for a strong opposition, viva!

Nigel Rich 4/18/2009 3:34:28 PM
To me it's not about a black party or a white party but about a goverment that has all it's peoples' interest truelly at heart.15 years down the line the ignorant are still lining up to vote for corruption crime and then wait patiently for free housing and medical while blaming the white man for apartheid while the few are getting fatter and fatter. LOL.(ps: I really am not white or a racist even though I will vote DA).- Zim here we come

Alan 4/18/2009 4:01:57 PM
I wish i could've voted. Although the government said one could vote overseas, they made it really difficult. After registering, i received no notification. TO make matters worse they only allowed voting throughout the whole of Australia to take place in the little town Canberra. I wouldve had to drive 3.5 hours on a working day to get there to vote. Let alone others from Perth etc, who wouldve had to fly 5 hours to Canberra. Well done ANC, you surely stopped the otherseas votes!

Liz 4/18/2009 5:13:19 PM
I am voting DA

Fred 4/18/2009 5:54:14 PM
Corruption at the top is the main problem, and filters all the way down. To talk anti-corruption, but condone it at ALL levels of government by protecting crooks sends a clear message out.

Sean 4/18/2009 5:56:01 PM
To avoid 2/3.

Miss Cellany 4/18/2009 8:42:01 PM
We all know the ANC will win; 15yrs is a v. short time for people to forget apartheid. For those in a quandary the smart vote is for a stronger opposition and for that we need to concentrate votes on DA, the party started by Helen Suzman in 1949 for the benefit of all races. COPE is unproven, could rejoin ANC. Democracy demands a strong opposition or we could have a dictatorship no-one except ruling clique will like.

Miss Cellany 4/18/2009 8:48:28 PM
You still won't vote! Apathy killed how many people during apartheid and now you are being apathetic because you are plain stupid! The point of voting is to express your dissatisfaction with the way ruling party is ruling. Democracy demands a strong opposition even if you don't entirely agree with ALL their policies. PLEASE GET OFF THE FENCE AND VOTE or you will deserve all you get from ANC.

Esther 4/18/2009 8:57:03 PM
I was still undecided between the DA and COPE, but piet just made my mind up for me. A white government indeed!! I want democracy so COPE it will be.

Miss Cellany 4/18/2009 9:02:28 PM
Don't underestimate the masses out there. Many of them are smarter than you might imagine and see through the ANC ploys and also COPE. I'm sure there are many sincere people who will vote for COPE but they can be bought like anything in this country by the ANC. See Mike Xego for e.g.

manningi 4/18/2009 9:29:20 PM
I agree. The ANC can do the most damage to the stupid in the country

Farouk Cassim 4/18/2009 10:05:53 PM
I am surprised at those who still believe that the DA is an option. The DA will only split the opposition vote and this will allow the ANC to capture many local government seats in two years time. COPE is the only realistic and viable political home for both black and white. If voters don't see this let them be blamed for what the ANC does. DA voters will be equally culpable. We need a new game and COPE is that new game. Vote COPE to secure the future.

chantal 4/18/2009 10:21:42 PM
I will vote for a small party that is against corruption- which is what is ruining our country- The Independent Democrats.

chantal 4/18/2009 10:23:08 PM
Dear Bemused it is not only your right to vote, it is your duty!

DA 4/18/2009 11:44:27 PM
Helen Zille for president

shai 4/19/2009 9:51:14 AM
The ANC lost its moral grounds long time ago. The ANC with Zuma is following the tracks of ZIM, the writing is on the wall. What he is saying : Working together I can steal more.....he is saying it in our eyes. South-Africa is the last Hope for Africa ! For the sake of AFRICA dont give the ANC more power. For equal and Free South Africa vote for the People of this beautiful country.

George 4/19/2009 12:59:28 PM
After voting for the ruling party for the past 15 years , IT's ANC NO More for me . It does not embrace our rainbow nation and the only one's who benefit are the corrupt.Poor service delivery and crime is a big problem .The poor have been forgotten.

Kelvin 4/19/2009 3:37:20 PM
The ANC inherited a country which the former white nationalists had ruined economically, socially with their apartheid policies. To expect the ANC to transform the country on so many field in 15 years is impossible. The ANC gets my vote because it is the only party which means something for everyone, poor, rich, white and poor. Not the racist policies of the DA. Theire policy is to fight the ANC and Zuma. What kind of policies are those???

stack 4/19/2009 7:15:33 PM
i will be voting for COPE as I think it is the only viable option for a non-racial government! Black people mistrust the DA and white people mistrust the ANC. I also think the DA has been fairly useless as a national opposition party!! all fine and well if you live in Cape Town(which still has shocking crime stats - i have family having been attacked in their home 3 times in 2 months)with your World Mayor of the Year but they have done bugger all for the rest of their wards!!!

Deb 4/19/2009 9:10:55 PM
The only things a party needs to get my vote is honesty & a good work ethic. Then everything else will fall into place. I'm voting DA - my only concern is "will Cape Town be the only place to benefit from a DA government?". They really need to be seen to be the "people's party" and not "Cape Town"s party". But I'll be giving them a chance this time around.

Elvis 4/19/2009 11:09:55 PM
I am black but scared for our country. The ANC abused their power and could not (and will not in future) deliver on the promises.Corruption!Crime! Criminals in Government!! Scary scary times. Vote DA for any hope. A Zimbabwe sitution is no good, not even for us blacks.

Nthabiseng 4/19/2009 11:31:15 PM
I vote DA.Crime is out of control,ANC proved that they canot stop it.I am sick of it.Sick of my family and friends falling victim, being raped -innocent children.Murdered.Police incompetent and corrupt. The ANC cannot stop it -they had their chance.People witout proper skills and experience in postions just because they are black is part of the reason that the coutry is falling apart. The DA can get us back on track so that the international community will stop laughing at us.Vote DA.

Wayne 4/20/2009 7:33:18 AM
What amazes me is that people say that becaue of apartheid they will vote ANC. The ANC did not get rid of apartheid alone, many others where involved, but the ANC took all the credit and did not give other credit where it was due. My vote will either be UDM or Cope as a English white southafrican with NO other Passport the ANC has made it clear that i am not welcome in my own country and I have no where to go, including the DA they just deface others instead of telling me what they can do for me.

Linda Yates 4/20/2009 8:58:17 AM
I will vote ACDP because it is racially representative, they gave back R100 000 to a casino because they want to ban gambling and they oppose abortion on demand, pornography, prostitution and same-sex marriage. In a proportional democracy every vote counts!

J 4/20/2009 9:15:17 AM
Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. My vote will be to ensure an more equal distribution of power. Let us save the politicians from themselves.
