Stealing our time

by Bushy Van Eck
2009-11-04 09:26

Dear Editor,

I'm sick and tired of having to fall in line at banks for unreasonable lengths of time. The other day I stood in line for 35 minutes before reaching the cashier. There were at least forty two people in front of me and when I finally left, the line had grown even longer.

I made a quick calculation and estimated that more or less about 150 customers lined up in that hour all paying a penalty in time of say 30 minutes. This means that in one hour the banks are stealing 75 hours from customers.

The irony is that this is time taken away from our employers as it was early morning hours. Lunch hour line-ups are even longer.

The government should do research and as a result they will fall over backwards when they realise just how much time is lost due to the ignorant attitudes of banks in this regard.

The cherry on the cake is that while you are forfeiting your own time the banks have the audacity to say that those customers are not even allowed to use their cellphones.

Many years ago, the banks had the same amount of staff but probably only a third of the customers. Some of the profits they make are nothing other than money in time being stolen from us, the customer, by them saving on employment costs.

I plead to the government to catch a wakeup call and do something about this by enforcing the banks to employ staff in relation to their customer database. It is very clear to me that their staff is working under pressure and dare not voice their concern in fear of being hauled over the coals.

And please don't tell me I can make use of internet banking. When I see the annual profits the banks make for their shareholders it makes me sick to the stomach, not about the shareholders' profits, but the way the very clients that enable those shareholders to profit is being treated by the arrogant disrespectful attitudes of those in charge of the banks that can make a difference.

Fortunately this does not hold true for all the banks, as their most certainly is a bank that really cares, but then their clients know that too well.

Bushy Van Eck

Bushy, So change to the bank that really care.

J 11/4/2009 9:35:34 AM
FNB is the worst bank ever, you can wait for an hour until you get help, they must pay us for time waisting.

ARIES 11/4/2009 9:36:36 AM
Hey Dude have you not heard of internet banking and ATMs to withdraw money. Anyone who still goes into banks deserves what they get and waste their time.

PAR 11/4/2009 9:36:54 AM
I moved my account to FNB whose bank charges are a quarter of what I was being charged by Nedbank and I have no reason to ever go into the bank as I can do everything electronically.

Marli 11/4/2009 9:39:24 AM
I went to the bank on Monday to make a deposit. The cue was also long but it moved at a reasonable pace. There were three cashiers working. Then one of them went on lunch and the cue grinded to a halt. No other replaced the one that went on lunch. I stood for over half an hour. The other customers in the cue also became irritated. Everybody has somewhere that they need to be. Why can't the banks have more tellers working on the busy days??

Cynical 11/4/2009 9:42:37 AM
Banks in this country are always going to give sh*t service in one way or another and charge high fees because there is no competition here. Simple as that. Oh well, good enough for a Third World country I guess.

SimonP 11/4/2009 9:43:10 AM
The last thing we need is the government to legislate on how many people banks should employ. Banks are private sector and will lose cutomers if the service is rubbish. Government intervention in the public sector would set a dangerous precedent for other private sector businesses and would certainly do nothing for increased foreign investment.

Glock 22 11/4/2009 9:43:44 AM
Like ABSA in 4 ways , It has 20 tellers but only two are staffed. Eish

Baas Koos 11/4/2009 9:44:51 AM
Can only be Absa or FNB..... get internet banking..... the set up takes about 30 mins... and that was the best 30 mins i ever had at a bank.... now i do all at home!

Time Manager 11/4/2009 9:46:39 AM
I use ATMs and internet banking for everything, if I do need to go to the branch i time it so its out of peak hours. Its called time management.

KOBUS 11/4/2009 9:48:16 AM
The CompCom actually did a study that includes the cost of time wasted standing in line at banks when you want to move your account from one bank to another. It's part of the report that caused the big palaver last December when Wikileaks uncensored it. Go read it, you'll be amazed.
I do disagree COMPLETELY with your assertion that "the government" must do something about it. Why must the government do it? It's not nothing to do with them. You can do something about it yourself by moving to another bank that has better service - they do exist!

ARIES, you obviously don't have a business that receives cash that needs to be deposited or has to draw large amounts of cash to pay weekly wages to labourers. For a "normal" salaried employee there aren't many reasons to go into a bank physically any more, but many other people still have very good reasons for having to actually go into banks.

Kevin 11/4/2009 9:49:40 AM
Long live FNB Private Banking :D

Spiderman 11/4/2009 9:51:25 AM
Internet or cell phone.

However, as you pointed out. There are 10 to 15 cashier cubicles. Only 3 - 4 manned. At least 2 of these are so lazy that it takes them 2 hours to go fetch your new cheque book!

The worst is that it appears that all but 1 takes lunch between 1 and 2? Duh, is this not supposed to be their peak time?

Same applies to supermarkets.

kolobe 11/4/2009 9:52:22 AM
I laughed out so loud when I read this article, the government should make a research? Are you for real?I mean people want privatization at all costs now they want the government to intervene when the private sector screws them up, now that Vodacom, MTN and their capitalists led greed is milking them out they want the government to intervene.

Halfwise@simonP 11/4/2009 9:58:31 AM
I just wanna get this right. You want the gov that you did not vote for to help you. That’s weird really weird, I must say.

Zizo 11/4/2009 10:01:17 AM
government intervention........... wahahahahaha.

KAREN 11/4/2009 10:01:59 AM
LOL. Pleading to the Government to act on Banks. How laughable. If the Government cannot even act on what they are supposed to like crime, service deliver etc....what are the chances of them acting on this. Catch a wake up dude. Go to the bank manager and complain or change your bank.

Mike 11/4/2009 10:02:41 AM
One thing's for sure Bushy, poor service with these financial institutions is something you can Bank on.

val 11/4/2009 10:06:17 AM
Absolutely true it is frustratin to stand in a que for longer than say 10min no matter which institute it maybe, becasue it does amou1nt to stealing time, and time is money. However, Bushy, with time, everything changes, from fashion to tradition, so if you prefer to stay behind the times and technology leaves you behind YOU WILL FIND YOURSELF LOST AND FORGOTTEN. So Advice to all the old fogies, jack up your NEVER too old to learn....!!!!

Thobi 11/4/2009 10:09:14 AM
I really don't know why with Nedbank I still need to go queuing to get a three-months statement. I mean, it's a basic and common requirement and should be put on internet banking for heaven's sake. And oh the fees they charge us!

@Cynical 11/4/2009 10:10:02 AM
Thought you would have fled by now! I remember standing in a que in the UK for as long...seems a lot of people might not have access to internet banking. Remember the ques are sometimes filled with previously disadvantage.

Zizo 11/4/2009 10:11:17 AM
Basically you do agree that some of these institutions should be nationalised.

@kolobe 11/4/2009 10:11:49 AM
For once you are making sense, not sure what cell phone providers has to do with banks though.

Bernard Black* 11/4/2009 10:14:54 AM
Try internet banking or just keep your money in a safe. You sound like 1 of those people who throws a sh*t fit when they stand longer that 2minutes in a queue??? GET OVER YOURSELF BOSSIE!!!!!...Stupid 'article'...

@Zizo 11/4/2009 10:15:24 AM
Wha ha ha ha - LOL crazy world we live in!!

Gpurscreepers 11/4/2009 10:23:22 AM
Internet banking is not without its irritations but definitely the way forward.
I'd be happy if all we had to worry about was how long we had to wait in lines.

Internet banking also shows all those R25 'service charges', R5 'transfer fee', R30 for this, R42 for that, R38 for lunch etc. I wish they actually stated why they're skimming off the top.

SimonP@Halfwise 11/4/2009 10:23:59 AM
What are you on about. I posted the government SHOULD NOT legislate on the number of staff banks should employ. You then state Im asking the government for help. My conclusion is you cant read.
BTW The elected government is supposed to help all citizens regardless of who they voted for, read the Constitution that you so often refer to.

ChapStick 11/4/2009 10:26:29 AM
You get ripped off inside the bank and stand to get ripped off when you come out...who is the criminal?

Lou @ Zizo 11/4/2009 10:31:00 AM
Zizo. How's your finances going? If the bank gives you an 80% loan to buy a house, how much would you have to fund out of your own pocket? Is it A: 10%, B: 20% or C: 30%? For the answer, check Zizo's comment on this letter: http://www.news24.com/Content/MyNews24/YourStory/1162/a36f3e41aa27436f9a90378eb066ddda/03-11-2009-01-00/The_grass_is_greener

comeonthen 11/4/2009 10:48:12 AM
i will never stop shouting the praises of nedbank. if you want a short wait, change to them, you won't be disappointed. PLUS try to manage your banking time better. don't go at lunchtime and then bitch because it's busy. of COURSE it is.

kolobe 11/4/2009 10:49:32 AM
thats a fake kolobe..anyway my writer you said it..internet banking is the way

@sexy 11/4/2009 10:51:41 AM
Kolobe is right. Cell phone have everything to do with banks. Have you ever heard of cell phone banking? I work for a bank and charging you people is paying my salary, so i can not complain, but these fools who pretend to be clever are just useless. How do you deposit cash via internet or cell phone banking. How do you get a new card if the old one is damaged or lost, i guess via ATM is you think.

jay 11/4/2009 10:53:16 AM
and then they close at 15:30.
why oh why

NoobKiller 11/4/2009 10:58:53 AM
Its because LOSERS like you go into the bank for every little thing! Start using atms or internet! I hardly have to go to the bank unless my account is screwed....on another note, when I worked at the bank, we watched out for irate customers like you, & we messed around until that person cracked in the cue or stormed out :D ahhhh the little things that make life fun :)

suzie 11/4/2009 10:59:36 AM
The banks have different facilities that you can use to enable you NOT to go into the bank. They try to get people not to go into banks. Service delivery at a lot of banks are excellent.

SimonP@Zizo 11/4/2009 11:01:39 AM
Where do you get the idea the author is asking for banks to be nationalised, he has asked for government to legislate on employee numbers, that is not nationalisation.
Where do you stand on nationalising Sexwale and Patrices money? Afterall they were given it so why shouldnt the tax payer have it back?
I dont expect an answer, im guessing you are two confused already.

Goose 11/4/2009 11:03:37 AM
Well Capitec banks charges are less than half of ABSA-have printouts comparing the two banks. The only problem is that Capitec has no credit card! Why is it that other countries have comeptition in different sectors, including banking, but we have a monopoly? Our banking systems are amongst the most advanced in the world and thus the most efficient, so why are our charges substantially more than other countries?

@NOOBKILLER 11/4/2009 11:08:54 AM
Let me guess; you made tea for the tellers. I can't believe that pricks like you actually have a job.

Philip 11/4/2009 11:14:19 AM
So I suppose everyone complaining here also would not wait a half an hour to get a drink at a nigth club?If you add your nightclub entrance fees to the ridiculous prices you pay for a drink and compare this to you banking fees, shouldn't you be discussing night clubs? Or am I wrong?

k_m 11/4/2009 11:18:52 AM
I went to ABSA bank on past Saturday morning. They openes at eight and had only two tellers and their service only began at 08H20 and it was also a month end. Why can't banks open at 8 and close at 016h30?

Ryan 11/4/2009 11:19:08 AM
What is your reason for not using internet banking? It's the only way to avoid standing in line.

Singularity 11/4/2009 11:19:23 AM
Bushy, you are truly living up to your name, get a life man, and get online too, I have not been inside a bank for 10 years and I do all types of transactions a normal person would do, and more.

KK 11/4/2009 11:20:11 AM
I once invited the bank manager to join me in the queue: month-end, with only 2 cashiers availble. Kept chatting away with him as the queue slowly shuffled forward. things improved a whole lot after I wasted his time...

Goose 11/4/2009 11:21:37 AM
I ahve been an internet banking customer since ABSA first brought it out in '95 i think it was...
Yes, IB is fantastic, but add all your monthly banking fees together and you will get the shock of your life! Even with the packages that say you pay a flat fee, you still land up paying a lot more. No competition though, so i don't know what to do about this reality!

AJ @ Philip 11/4/2009 11:24:46 AM
I have read your comment twice but have now officially given up...

Nquza@ Bushy 11/4/2009 11:24:53 AM
Although we have the advantage of internet, phone & ATM banking facilities there are instances where you have to go to the bank. The secrete lies on timing & location. For instance a bank that's in the industrial area will be busy on Thursdays & Fridays. Whereas a bank in the shopping centre is not likely to be busy in the mornings from Tuesday to Thursday.
If you get your timing & location right then you do not need to stand for long.

ARIES 11/4/2009 11:25:14 AM
KOBUS you should have your empolyees open accounts so you do not have to take the risk to draw weekly wages. You must find out if your branch has a drop safe which you can use to deposit your business takings. Speak to your branch manager. If your bank doesn't offer this service then find one that does. Sorry Kobus still no excuse to have to go into the bank.

Bobby 11/4/2009 11:45:46 AM
I agree, something should be done. Also, i have a HUGE problem having to contact my bank on an 086 sharecall number... why should i have to pay to call their call centre which most of the time keeps you on hold for ages. Surely the call centres should be the banks cost of doing business and not ours??? Its insane and profiteering.

spam 11/4/2009 11:45:54 AM
Oh for crying out loud... get a life -all of you!!! if you havent happened to notice you have to stand in a queue where ever you go now adays.. at the shops, at the bank, at the municipality ect... its because there are too many people who populate this country!!! stop blaming the banks for your problems, get internet banking or use the atm, you dont HAVE to go to the bank for everything.

Ilana 11/4/2009 11:49:22 AM
I HATE STANDARD BANK! I had to go to the bank because my son's account was frozen for NO APPARENT REASON! They said it was because FICA docs were outstanding but they had ALL the docs scanned into the system! Then thye had a system problem and couldn't unfreeze the account. Then I had to go draw funds at the teller adn the queue there was also long and yes, 7 cubicles but on 2 were manned (and this at lunch time!) An hour and a half wasted on their incompetence!

Oh and I did try and call the in to the call centre and they told me the account was active and then transferred me to the branch and they just never bothered to answer the phone, it just rang and rang and rang and rang and rang ............

They know absolutely nothing about service!

As their slogan goes: Simpler (you kidding me) Better (I don't think so) Faster (yeah right - NOT!)

ChapStick@Philip 11/4/2009 11:50:47 AM
Please refrain from ever commenting on this forum again. Stick to what you are good at..which is staying at home, covering yourself in peanut butter and dancing to badly remixed techno.

Badbones 11/4/2009 12:07:19 PM
This is 2009 ..... use modern technology to do you banking dude ..... there is a sucker born every day ..... funny man .... really funny ......

Don 11/4/2009 12:07:27 PM
Bushy because of people like you we have queues, save yourself money and do electronic banking, move into the 21st century. Don't complain when you stand in a queue there is a cheaper alternative, hell I'm going to have a go at Pick n Pay, Woolworths,Checkers, clothing outlets etc etc..Queues exist in South Africa...live with it!

Cynical@"@Cynical" 11/4/2009 12:18:34 PM
"Thought you would have fled by now! I remember standing in a que in the UK for as long...seems a lot of people might not have access to internet banking. Remember the ques are sometimes filled with previously disadvantage. "

I also lived in the UK for quite some time and had no problems at my bank whatsoever. You were probably at a crappy bank! And no I haven't "fled" yet but will do so at a time of my choosing. Aren't I lucky to have that choice, hey!

AagNee 11/4/2009 12:23:33 PM
I am amazed how a small world all those who recommend cell/internet banking live. Not everything can be done online. Bushy did not say what his bussiness was. There are other worlds like bussinessmen, people how have to pay wages, get cash floats etc. To avoid long lines, go to the bank in the most upmarket area you can find. Netbank,s lines are the shortest.

Hans 11/4/2009 12:24:08 PM
At least you have a choice at banks. You can change your bank, use an ATM, internet or cellphone. What choice do you have for driver's licence renewal / new ID book. It would be happiness if it was only 35 minutes at these offices.

lys 11/4/2009 12:30:45 PM
who cares

another waste of space

k_m 11/4/2009 12:35:14 PM
The banks are always the winners and the poor us are always the losers.

PAR 11/4/2009 12:41:36 PM
The banks are normally bad around pay day - try dealing with MTN - they are useless every day.

Hennie 11/4/2009 12:51:48 PM
I read yesterday that people making driver's license appointments in Rustenburg queue through the night. That is quite bad as I only had to queue 6 hours the last time I had my license card renewed. Sorry... how long was that bank queue wait?

MC 11/4/2009 12:54:48 PM
I do make use of internet banking and almost never go to the bank but when you need to deposit cash in your account you have no choice. Regarding time management - it is also not always an option. I don't mind standing in cues - as long as it actually MOVES..

katman 11/4/2009 12:59:23 PM
We see a remote farm road. Somewhere off-camera we hear the beats of a loud sound system approaching.

Then a farmer drives his tractor into frame along this road. He has fitted it with a monster sound system and nods his head to the hip-hop beats.

Antz 11/4/2009 1:06:16 PM
Haha, have just been to a state department to renew my licence disks for my vehicles! R36 transaction fee! And I waited longer... Please do not let the state intervene, it will get worse!! BTW, ever heard of internet banking?

Tim 11/4/2009 1:08:43 PM
Gee you people can complain about everything, get over yourselves. If you want to see bad service in the Banking sector, do yourself a favor and come to the UAE. Stop complaining about the service in SA there are developed countries worse off when it comes to service delivery (banking etc).

@Cynical 11/4/2009 1:18:57 PM
LOL. Just shows even crappy banks overseas. Lucky? you can excape SA but you cannot escape CYNICAL self.

fedup 11/4/2009 2:22:44 PM
two things to say to you BUSHY......
you should be fired for using company time for your own private banking, YOU are the one thats wasting company time not the bank, secondly you'll probably want the government to sort out your constipation issues neh???!! you're wasting OUR time for posting this nonsense

Shells 11/4/2009 3:33:17 PM
I think the wait is always long in banks because each and every time you go to the Enquiry counter, about absolutely anything, they make a copy of your ID book! I think the bank must have at least 1000 copies of my ID on file! SUCH an irritation!

@Author 11/5/2009 1:01:45 AM
Ever heard of Internet Banking? Or Cell Phone Banking?

Pleb 11/5/2009 6:22:36 AM
Use Internet banking and ATM'S !

Bonn 11/5/2009 8:44:55 AM
Every tried getting FICA'd online or at an ATM (@ all the fools who say "Go to an ATM" or "Internet banking"). First, there's the 15 minutes that the bank needs to confirm that you really are who you say you are. Then there's the 10 minutes it takes to make your needs understood (before you're told to go wait in another queue), and LASTLY there's the 5 minutes that it ACTUALLY takes to process your request.

Craig 11/5/2009 9:17:37 AM
Internet banking dude, internet banking... That way you could save US time for not having to read this

Shells 11/5/2009 4:13:26 PM
How do you suppose we collect cheque books or new debit cards WITH INTERNET BANKING....morons!

ng 11/6/2009 5:56:24 AM
Had a D/o returned by Absa on Sunday. I tel my branch on Mon am to find out why and was referred to the Homeloan Section because they couldn't help me. At the Homeloans Dept I was told I was in overdraft. I pointed out that I have OD facilities and was well within my limits. Was told they would investigate and get back to me within 24 hours. That was Monday am - I have not heard a word since then. A lot of staff members think they are doing their clients a favour!

simon 11/8/2009 4:53:00 PM
@noobkiller 10:58.
Let me guess, you worked for Nedbank; your attitude and arrogance is par for their course, and their management control to discipline misfits like you equally deficient.
