'Making a real difference?'

by Mphatjie Monareng
2009-07-08 14:15

Dear Editor,

Today I listened to Members of Parliament (MPs), including former president Kgalema Motlanthe, talking about our former president, Nelson Mandela, in the context of the planned Mandela Day, as if they were talking about God.

As President Jacob Zuma explained it in his State of the National Address, people around the world would be asked, on Mandela Day (18 July), to spend 67 minutes of their time doing something which made a difference to the world around them.

Whilst I remain grateful for the role Mandela played in the liberation of our country from apartheid, paying the high price of 27 long years' imprisonment, I will not do anything extraordinary on Mandela Day. It will be business as usual for me, and this is why:

1. The thought of people all over the world dedicating 67 minutes of their life doing "something  which made a difference to the world around them" sounds too good to be of any real benefit to the poor people of the world, too many of whom are in Africa.

2. My suspicion is that politicians, such as Members of Parliament, will use the day to engage in pretensions acts of caring and doing good for humanity whilst we know, based on their daily conduct (sleeping amidst serious debates, Travelgating, etc), that they care very little about the wellbeing of their fellow citizens.

We need to celebrate the life and sacrifices of Mandela everyday of our lives by doing good for our families, friends and communities. Sitting in Cape Town and talking for the better part of the year and dedicating only 67 minutes of "doing good" verges on negligence and perhaps even illegality.

Sixty-seven minutes of pretentious community service do not sound attractive to me - and I know that millions of other people around South Africa, Africa and the world will not take part in this charade, unfortunately organised under the iconic name of our hero, Nelson Mandela.

@ Mphatjie- I like the way you think. Good stuff!!!

Halfwise 7/8/2009 2:24:10 PM
@Mphatjie - I see you are trying to sound smart here, remember Zuma negotiated Madiba's release...

VG 7/8/2009 2:27:16 PM
Mphatjie you sound like on of those guys who doesn't buy roses on valentine's day because "It's too commercial" or " I don't need a special day, I treat my partner well everyday". Well, maybe you do , but the vast majority do not. We get so bogged down in the everyday drama of life that we forget to stop once in a while and remember the sacrifices others have made & what Madiba has come to symbolise. If you do good for your community and family EVERY day, then good for you, but us mere fallible mortals slip up every now n then and appreciate a chance to redeem ourselves - even if it is only 67 mins..

Jan 7/8/2009 2:27:45 PM
I agree. Mandela is a great man but he is not a messiah or a god. Stop making one of him.

vankuijeren14@author 7/8/2009 2:31:19 PM
your eyes are open...glad to see it

Careful 7/8/2009 2:33:22 PM
the government should do good by paying Doctors, police, nurses, teachers etc and stop using our hard earned monies to celebrate Mandela Day, Yes Mandela is a hero but South Africa is faced with core social ills that needs redressing ASAP. on Mandela day i'll be working to pay tax, Can the government use the 67minutes to delebarate on how best to use my tax.

another guy 7/8/2009 2:34:05 PM
ok

Juan 7/8/2009 2:35:11 PM
our TAX money should make people's lives better, and it all goes to MANDELA's party! So why spend MORE time on this?

Anon @ Halfbrain 7/8/2009 2:35:55 PM
If Zuma is so great for negotiating the release, does that make De Klerk your hero for releasing him?

FOTA 7/8/2009 2:36:58 PM
@Halfwit - Zuma negotiated WHAT??? .. Inventing history are we. Shame, not enough real achievment from you boss for ammunition.

Juan 7/8/2009 2:37:46 PM
Malema can do us all a service and shut up for 67minutes!

mduve 7/8/2009 2:39:34 PM
@ Mphajie - u not obliged to lol. U too serious dude. Just like those buffoons who complain when we commemorate June 16. I've got a suggestion I think that we should commemorate all the days that racist attacks are being inflicted on US. like than Johan Botha kid who short pple for no reason - and farmers who have killed and are still killing us for supporting ANC...

Ivan @ Mphatjie 7/8/2009 2:40:12 PM
Glad to see you are back on track gain, I agree with you, lets not create a "god" out of the man, albeit he played a vital role in the democracy in SA.

mduve 7/8/2009 2:43:43 PM
@ Mphatjie - soon we are also going to celebrate the day that ur party goes down - watch the space...losers

IandI 7/8/2009 2:53:49 PM
We should help the less fortunate every day and not just becos is someone's birthday.

Poloyatonki 7/8/2009 2:54:02 PM
Another article about our beloved ANC, its been an ANC's day today....anc that, anc this, Yawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwn

Jabu Khuluse 7/8/2009 2:56:51 PM
I will definately do something, are we just gonna sit and admire Nelson Mandela or try help him realise his dream of an inclusive society? I was inspired by Mandela's courage and his spirit of UBUNTU. I'm not trying to be Mandela but I will always remember him by doing the right thing around me. Long live the spirit of Nelson Mandela. Only two messages were read in MJ's memorial, Nelson Mandela and Diana Ross. Mandela for RSA and ANC.

Mphoza@Mpantjie (Mkhukhu) 7/8/2009 2:57:21 PM
Just like you have the choice to vote or not to. To have a girlfriend or not, etc. It your right not to honour the 67 mins plea. So get back to work and stop writing crap.

DPH 7/8/2009 2:59:15 PM
It's not necessarily what you accomplish in your life that counts, but how you finish. You can finish strong, or you can destroy your own legacy through your actions later in life. Nelson Mandela's continuing support for the ANC, in his twilight years, has tarnished his image as a righteous man and has diminished his iconic status in my opinion. I feel less compelled to honour him now than I would have ten years ago. Like you, I will not be doing anything special on July 18!

glow 7/8/2009 3:00:43 PM
I agree..while he sacrificed his whole life fighting against the injustice and the evil of apartheid, i feel the current government has tarnished and quite simply made a mockery of this great man's achievements.

cvz 7/8/2009 3:07:46 PM
Hey you can go strike for 67 minutes with the workers at one of the 2010 stadiums!

Phinah 7/8/2009 3:08:32 PM
Fully agree with you Mr Monareng except this part: We need to celebrate the life and sacrifices of Mandela everyday of our lives by doing good for our families, friends and communities. The man is traitor, who will keep quiet when the very same people that he supposedly went to jail for are suffering in the hands of his organisation. It does not feel right to celebrate, because the struggle is still continuing. We need fresh blood, being inducted in the Guinness World Record Books for spending 27 years without sex does not build houses for the poor. Personally I think SA was doing great long before kids my own age were introduced to rubbishy words like Nelson, Jacob, FW, Thabo during school lessons. Its time Nelson waits for his day to go to heaven, although I doubt he will even be let through the door.

bokamoso 7/8/2009 3:08:36 PM
i am struggling to undertand the purpose for this letter, according to the author celebrating the life of an icon seems like a futile exercise to him, must we now wait until the former president passes on the recognise his effors, haven't we learnt anything from MJ funeral.maybe we should make him god after all he's done for us, me and you both know that we won't be here if it wasn't for his courage to stand do act. my opinion i guess!

Doorboot 7/8/2009 3:13:03 PM
He is a great man no doubt, but to me only because of what he did after 94 not before. Santioning terrorism, yes terrorism, still puts a blemish on his lifes work. One thing to sit in jail for 27 years another to sacrifice someone elses life for your cause. The operative phrase is somoene else.

@ DPH 7/8/2009 3:15:15 PM
"Mandela tarnished his image by supporting ANC" Mandela fought for freedom that cannot be tarnished, stop making excuses for the admiring the man.

JohnP 7/8/2009 3:17:36 PM
Are we going to have a holiday that day..Thats all i'm worried about..

Mzi 7/8/2009 3:21:36 PM
COME ON EVERYBODY.WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING ON THAT DAY TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE.LETS STAND TOGETHER AND HELP MANDELLA THE ICON ON THIS DAY.BECAUSE AFTER ALL HE DID FIGHT THE COLONIALISTS FOR YOU AND FOR ME.

SABELO S 7/8/2009 3:25:18 PM
@FOTA... you of little knowledge, yet you make so much noise.

ARYAN 7/8/2009 3:26:56 PM
I will def be celebrating this day. I will use that 67 minutes to think of almost 3000 farmers murdered in cold blood and the woman and children that was killed in the Kerk street bombing that was authorised by your little hero.

@Mpantjie 7/8/2009 3:35:38 PM
Mkhukhu, I have something better for you to do on 18th July. Take your vuvuzela and go watch Orlando Pirates vs Manchester City ko Polokwane. See you there

SimonP 7/8/2009 3:40:45 PM
Its quite incredible the high esteem JZ believes the world has for him. Does he actually believe the world was listening to his plans for what the world should do on Madela Day. I'll give JZ one thing and that is he has a vastly inflated ego.

PHILA 7/8/2009 3:43:29 PM
COPE failed to cope. INKATHA will be non existent by year end, and so you still dont want to believe and accept that the SON OF MEN is descending back to earth.

Let's see on Mandela day .. it coincides with my Saturday so I will do exactly what i was going to which is spend at least 67 minutes or more with my family considering i spend Monday to Friday 04h30 - 18h30 at work I do need the time off and charity does begin at home! Having said that though I admire the man for his personality I do think his beloved ANC have lost the plot. I wonder if he is disappointed. I would recommend that government officials take the time to either work at a soup kitchen for the poor or even visit nearby hospitals and cheer up patients they could make it more fun and really get back to grips with their voter base by traveling via taxi and train - who knows then they might be inspired to improve matters.

Jabulani 7/8/2009 3:56:08 PM
The best thing to do is fight ANC by making sure the don't win the next elections. We should start voting them out in yhe local elections in 2011.

gatvol x 10 7/8/2009 3:56:10 PM
I would like to ask Andrew Feinstein if Nelson Mandela got a kick back from the arms deal! All the ANC sheeple should read "After the party". You may find that your god-like icon doesn't have such a squeaky clean history after all. We all know the rest of the cronies were in on the action.

MelanieJ 7/8/2009 3:57:48 PM
insulting our intelligence once again

SimonP 7/8/2009 3:58:30 PM
According to the Madela Day website only 1760 people have pledged their 67 minutes. Seems the World as a whole didnt take any notice of Zuma (maybe they fell asleep listening to monotonous monosyllibic drone.

some guy again 7/8/2009 3:59:54 PM
well.. whoever wrote this letter can go and rot in hell 4 all I care... and I will reapet it again.. WHAT EVER DUDE!!, we don't give a f!@#$%^ what you think...

Halfwise 7/8/2009 4:00:52 PM
COPE was mistake, I said it before. That white lady who resigned at COPE got a job at DA she is the only lady to be employed by Zille.

MONARENG, YOU ARE SIMPLY TRYING TO BE SMART.I AGREE WITH cvz
7/8/2009 3:07:46 PM

T 7/8/2009 4:15:16 PM
@Poloyatonki, and we ANSeen no justice yet. Well thought of Mr Author and you are correct when saying we should apply everyday of our lives to see where we can better ourselves and the people around us, 67 minutes just dont cut it.

n 7/8/2009 4:16:44 PM
If you have a Nelson Mandela day, we must have an Oliver Tambo day: http://www.sahistory.org.za/pages/people/bios/tambo,o.htm;, http://www.nelsonmandela.org/index.php/news/article/tribute_to_oliver_tambo/, http://www.anc.org.za/people/tambo_or.html, http://www.moreorless.au.com/heroes/tambo.html, http://www.accessmylibrary.com/coms2/summary_0286-33726808_ITM.

Get a life Monareng, no body asked you to do anything anyway, you are also mentioning yourself as if you are reffering to God, shut up!!

Cynical 7/8/2009 4:25:53 PM
Suggestion for Mandela Day

In the spirit of being true South Africans, let us all do something truly South African on Mandela Day, like road rage, armed robbery, fraud, drive-by shootings, cash-in-transit robberies, burglary, public indecency, abduction, murder, etc. (Note that this list is not exhautive!).

SimonP 7/8/2009 4:28:51 PM
@Halfwise, where do you get your facts? Odendaal has not joined the DA. Do you really expect people to believe what you make up without question? Maybe you accept everything you are told but those with a whole brain will not.

Shimane Mbuyisa to Gatvol X10 7/8/2009 4:30:01 PM
Don't you think Feinstein would have written that wena Gatvol x10? Or are you a sangoma and now bones have told you that our beloved Madiba "does not have such a squeaky clean after all?" Go on, reveal the dirt. I am sure you can make it up. However, as long as you know that Madiba is revered the world over, know as well that what you Gatvol think off him is water of the duck's feathers. In simple English, your opinion of Madiba means nada, zilch. Now shut up if you have nothing positive to contribute

SimonP 7/8/2009 4:31:42 PM
@Halfwise, where do you get your facts? Odendaal has not joined the DA. Do you really expect people to believe what you make up without question? Maybe you accept everything you are told but those with a whole brain will not.

Karen @ Jabulani 7/8/2009 4:32:07 PM
Agreed, did you hear the the ANC is trying to negotiate a merger with the IFP !? hahaha, Buthelzi isn't that stupid. He knows that the ANC is feeling threatened and is trying desperately to increase it number by "merging" (read swallowing), other "black" parties to attempt to hang on to the majority. I just hope IFP stays strong, Cope gets their act together and comes good on their promises and the rest of the black electorate become less naive and gullible and start seeing the truth that is staring them in the face. If all this does happen we may just stand a chance. As for Mandela his glow is gone in my eyes, since he aligned himself with Zuma. The sentiment to make a difference is a nice one, but I would rather do it Michael Jacksons name than Mandela's name - or perhaps my own name? Yeah, why not. I don't need other people to inpire me to be a decent person, I can do it for myself.

chantal de pierres 7/8/2009 4:36:11 PM

@juan..For the first time in my life i agree with you 200%

ngwatoangwato 7/8/2009 4:54:32 PM
Nelson Mandela retired as a member of the ANC,so those who think for his legacy to be respected he must resign from the party that stood by his side from the first day of his incaceration should think twice and maybe stop dreaming. He remain an icon nomatter what some of you racist individuals value him.You are the reason his health is bad in the first place so now you want to pretnd you know him?Let Nelson Mandela enjoy the status his people are offering him.

Unathi 7/8/2009 5:08:26 PM
@Mphatjie Monareng:
I am committed to do good for this country regardless of what you and your buddies say. This is my country and I want to see it getting it better everyday. As for your article I am glad you made me respond to this utter nonsense. Icons like Mandela will leave a legacy and what about you?

Xolani 7/8/2009 5:34:21 PM
@Mphatjie Monareng - How about you make a real difference and NOT post any articles on News24 for 67 days. Please we are begging you

ZM 7/8/2009 6:04:19 PM
What did mandela do to deserve all this glorification? He was chillin in prison for three decades while real fighters like Tsietsi Mashininia and Steve Biko were fighting...

He does not deserve it...what happened to 'collective effort'?

Joe 7/8/2009 6:42:33 PM
I am sure if Nelson Mandela can distance himself from the current ANC he would. Pity he doesnt say it in public. He must be ashamed and dissapointed of the ANC today. However we can all learn from him what is true forgiveness!! A great statesman, but he was also the last!

Willem 7/8/2009 7:46:57 PM
Mr. Mandela does not deserve being called on by the current ANC. He is an international icon of peace, justice and prosperity, a very far cry from the current ANC setup. They seem to pull him out of the hat everytime they are in trouble. It is very embarresing to see that his birthday is being used for political purposes by this current government and even more embarresing as a South African to see that the entire world is looking the other way on "Mandela Day." No-one i the whole wide world has shown any inclanation to "celebrate" or commemorate" anything, so the ANC has broken even this grand old man. How distasteful they are!

Sky 7/8/2009 8:25:59 PM
I understand where you are coming from in terms of us needing to try and do good everyday, but not everyone maybe as PERFECT as you are.Other normal people may need a bit of reminding. Theres nothing wrong with this and its important to try and make some kind of positive change where ever we can. As for Nelson Mandela, he should be idolised. If it wasnt for him chances are you mother would still be calling white people 'baas' and 'missis', so I suggest you start thank your lucky stars for him. Anyone-this letter probably makes no difference to you. Go back to your negative, pessimistic little world. Here's wishing all good things to you.

JaNee 7/8/2009 9:03:06 PM
Who will liberate us from the current regime? We cannot depend on the choices made by the majority. A majority that are making the same mistakes as the dum majority in Zim.

Jo 7/8/2009 9:35:21 PM
It will be great if we can convince politicians to believe for 67 minutes that are actually there to serve the people. Maybe the idea will stick and it is a permanent change.

Blixum 7/8/2009 11:24:21 PM
WTF. Walk the extra mile and spend 68 minutes doing community service man. What a load of drivel...both article and idea.

Paul 7/8/2009 11:34:49 PM
There is no doubt that Madiba saved this country from a bloodbath leading up to our democracy. There is no doubt he is revered around the world. I too respect him for that, but my faith remains in God, not in any man! Unfortunately Madiba is an atheist because he says he cannot believe in anything that cannot be proven. Judge for yourself!

tee 7/9/2009 12:19:24 AM
I applaud you! you are absolutely right ..not to take away from what Mr Mandela did not only for our communities but for all of humanity we forget that he did not just spend 67mins but and entire lifetime of service...It seems we miss the point again and again the lives we celebrate (Mandela,Jackson, Garvey,King) do not assume the role of God but this is their contribution to society...what have we to offer... nothing...except when called upon in 67 mins...We should emulate our heroes ...their contribution was a lifelong event ...may this be our lesson

slakes 7/9/2009 1:54:11 AM
Mphatjie, i,m interested in knowing the meaning of your name. with regard to Tata he is well respected Internationaly, make no mistake if you don't know, that includes his organisation(ANC)that he will die supporting. I even wonder why people tend to separate Mandela and the org. that he was prepared to die for. ANC and its leaders were hated so much and labelled terrorist and what ever word u can think of and it seems you have still haboured that hate in yr mind. The Day Will be Celebrated watch the space and dont die like M.Jackson who never believed that America can one day have black president.I hope u have also not changed yr nose.

@mduve. What are you smoking mate. Since when were black people murdered on farms. As i recall all the white people were forced of farms and killed if they did not go. I personally know someone who's farms was invaded only to be left unproductive. Sort of like our public services, government, etc etc.

Hey South Africans wake-up, u seems asleep to me especially those who does not admire man of the world from south Africa Nelson mandela. If u were clever enough, u can make your dream come true and successful by simply saying "it is the dedication of Nelson Mandela day, beign knowing that on other hand you pushing your own agenda. Did u know that many countries in the entire world are lacking & missing people like mandela. Let's assume if mandela was from other continent and not Africa, u know u were goign to hammer and pressurised our icons and leaders by not even comparing them with Mandela but by blaming why they are not like Mandela of America or wherever. Like now people they admire & prefere Obama more than Nelson, u know what makes Obama to be great man in the world ? it is not only his profession as president of the state, but his African American status, People be happy for having someone like mandela no matter what, keep on celebrating his lagacy and life while still alive as much as u can. Stop comparing Mandela with God, this is an insult to your self as well.

GeorGe @Halfwise 7/9/2009 9:15:28 AM

Who cares what politicians do? If we say that MPS, or any other group, are going to do such-and-such and so why should I try, then all we do is drag ourselves down and our society goes down to. Do what you think is right, not what you think others will get away with.

fedup 7/9/2009 12:02:16 PM
you know mpatjie, if you have nothing to say, spare us the crap man.you can drown yourself on that day for all i care, we dont care what you do!!! actually no no no you know what you can do.....canvass for new leaders for cope,

RD 7/9/2009 12:29:30 PM
I am going to use the 67 minutes as a time to morne the breakdown of the things that Madiba gave so much for to build. Ther is very little if anything left to celebrate.

Mzi 7/9/2009 1:13:49 PM
Sho,,, all this fuss. I voted COPE so I won't honour the request at all.

Jo@everyone says... I couldn't personally bear this cermoney, but I think that this is the wrong time in SA to bring it up. The very response has shown that most people don't even understand the objection. So, repeating it over and over again, louder and louder, is just pointless. They don't get it, and it's ok. Reform, progress, change - these are all things that have to come from within any culture/nation/society. Someone who is part of this situation will someday stop and think: "Why are we still doing this, again?"
