Still time for Cope policies

by
2008-11-24 13:45

Mphatjie Monareng, News24 User

Addressing a meeting of the tribes and their chiefs on 8 January 1912 in Bloemfointein, Pixley Isaka Seme noted, amongst other things: "We have discovered that in the land of their birth, Africans are treated as hewers of wood and drawers of water."

Having observed the exclusion of black people from the country's political and economic affairs, Seme said the purpose of the meeting was "to devise ways and means of forming our national union for the purpose of creating national unity and defending our rights and privileges."

The meeting resolved to establish an organisation called the South African Native National Congress (SANNC), which evolved over the years into what we now know as the African National Congress (ANC).

I highlight this historical information to indicate the fact that you do not need to have policies and ideologies to form a political party. You need two things: firstly, determination and courage to rally others in opposing a situation or regime; and, secondly, a vision for a better future.

Today, we see leaders of the ANC (which is a far cry from the ANC envisioned by Seme) criticising the breakaway Congress of the People (COPE) for not having alternative policies when the COPE is not even launched officially as yet.

The new party is only being launched on 16 December - significantly, also in Bloemfontein. Led by their controversial president, Jacob Zuma, ANC campaigners (echoed by some analysts and other interested observers) argue that, because the yet-to-be-launched COPE does not yet have policies, it is therefore little more than the coming together of angry elitist losers.

Whilst it is important that COPE develops policies that distinguish it from other political parties, it is not fair to expect its leaders, such as Mosiuoa Lekota, Mbhazima Shilowa and Mluleki George, to have policies when they still have not officially launched their party. In the same way that Seme wanted to establish a national union "for the purpose of creating national unity and defending (black people's) rights and privileges", the leaders of the COPE have decided to rally South Africans in defence of the constitution of the republic and the rule of law.

The present-day ANC, in government over the past 14 years, has become complacent and is now steadily becoming a local version of Zimabbwe's Zanu-PF under Robert Mugabe. Just like Zanu-PF, the ANC is intolerant to opposition, has little regard for the rule of law and is determined to remain in office "until Jesus Christ come back", as Jacob Zuma likes to remind the nation.

The sad irony is that post-apartheid South Africa is being dragged away from a democratic constitution by the same ANC that fought so hard for non-racism, non-sexism and a democratic and prosperous country.

I agree that it's not fair to expect COPE to have policies in place before it has been officially launched. But the concern is that the reason for the formation of the party was not based on poolicy differences with the ANC; rather, they disagreed with the politics within the organisation. this raises questions over how different their policy stances will be. I.O.W - what are they offering voters besides a chance to show how much they don't like the ANC.

Cape Town Kid 11/24/2008 2:00:10 PM
It was also said by Mbeki himself that ANC faces no challenge except from within.ie "ANC CADRES" Lo and behold,if a truer word was ever spoken.I think that Pixley would have had a fit with this new game-players.Also,please do not act like the other "thieves"and "steal"some our leaders words to fit yr untruths.Go and reread our history to bring you to the PREAMBLE of the organisation. Haibo, these opportunistic wannabes!Go and write yr own power hungry history of theft, priviledge and access.

Ish 11/24/2008 2:03:34 PM
spot on! viva COPE

mlungisi 11/24/2008 2:05:54 PM
in the 2009 elections. I will vote ANC, no matter what you say. We care about the happenings not the sayings. ANC is the party we want in power. You claim your COPE want to defend the constitution and and the rule of law. Why they didn't protect within the ANC? You people are so confused. Please remember, we all make mistakes, so we ANC members we are ready to welcome back all those who realizes their mistakes. Ever since MDC all opposition parties they easily spot the dictator. ANC lives.

Can change the problems that our country is facing currently. I have realised that we the ppl of this country waste time on unnecessary things like bashing ANC,JZ,COPE and Malema etc.while the real problems still occur everyday e.gCrime,Corruption n Unemployment etc.I jst want the news24 user to tell me if COPE,ANC,DA.... do these ppl really hv the power to change this country or do we as citizens have the power?.Does JZ or Lekota hv the power to change a corrupt, lazy n incompetent gov employee.

Mapholoba 11/24/2008 2:16:23 PM
You seem to think South African are stupid as you are, it is fact that Shikota was formed out of anger and defeat in Polokwane. You cannot tell us what informed Shikota formation. These people have been in power for a long time and they are the ones who wanted to turn SA into Zimbabwe because they did not leave the office. Why Mbeki wanted a third term really ?

Joburg Boykie 11/24/2008 2:18:12 PM
I have nothing to add, save to say that your article is a brilliant rendition of the truth that faces all of us. Well done!

Tshepo 11/24/2008 2:20:50 PM
I am not going to vote for people who doesnt know what the represent at all? Cope was basically form because of ANger & CReedy by the Three Stupid Leaders in Shilowa,Lekota & George.. What i see is this Cope or Coke is a wast of time and it doesnt even have policies in place when their hold meeting is to Attack the ANC and that is fine as the promote our Beloved MOvement .. Cope is was form by ANgry people and therefore it will vanished.. Viva ANC Viva...

bongani 11/24/2008 2:24:32 PM
utter nonsense. u guys the more you become educated the more u become blind. u a so negative. i wonder if you really fought for freedom.

JNWB 11/24/2008 2:25:40 PM
A lot of it sounds like the same rubbish myths that are fed to the people, like that there was a king Tshwane that ruled over the pretoria area. But agree ANC is pulling the country apart.

Martin 11/24/2008 2:29:49 PM
The new Zimbabwe is at our very own door step, intimidation marked by violence and treats, this is typical the route Bob went, look at the current ANC, the same route, let?s recap. The so called struggle, then voted into power, then the farms and land was taken away from the so called settlers and distributed to landless blacks or wait I?m not allowed to say black, previously disadvantaged, then a new party stuck it head out as an opposition party, violence and death became Zim, an walla, look at the real Zim now. The same route for SA, see above steps, it took Zim 25 years, we are only on year 14. See the future, bleak isn?t it.

TSHEPO 11/24/2008 2:32:09 PM
how is stupid is this COPE leaders that their want AA to go? Now Lekota has benefited from the same AA now he want it to go?? HELL WITH COPE HELL WITH COPE, MAY BE COPE MUST GO TO ZIMBABWE TOGETHER WITH MBEKI... VIVA ANC VIVA...

azania 11/24/2008 2:33:50 PM
Can someone explain, how does one join a party that is yet to be launched, has no policies in place and has unkonwn values. Is one motivated by how well they lash out at JZ? What happens when Cope polices are in place and as a member, you find policies to be totally incompatible with you. This Cope / Copse can fool some peolple but they can not fool us all.

Mark T 11/24/2008 2:33:54 PM
You can expect a massive backlash from the pro ANC lobby though. But it is true, democracy allows for political differences and all parties need to embrace this. Many people died for these very rights, and no party has the right to exclude others from the process. The ANC should stop attacking COPE and sell us their policies so that we can see why they should get our vote.

Hennie 11/24/2008 2:37:29 PM
He's got that right, even if COPE, DA or anyone else had to win the elections the ANC will still remain in power, just relating to Zim.

Welile 11/24/2008 2:41:21 PM
The ANC rule has come to an end and those that fear God will be sworn in next year as new parliamentarians. God is not happy at all with the people that forbid discipline at school; promote abortion; steal money; get bribes and deny it. We must vote for the right people, COPE. We can no longer cope with people that take us for just voters and nothing else.

Willie 11/24/2008 2:44:35 PM
Just read your comment again before you call other people stupid???

azania 11/24/2008 2:44:52 PM
Your annalogy is completely of the mark. You cannot compare COPE to the SANNC of Seme. Cope is formed out of anger. Cope is motivated by power hunger and greed, hence they have quickly registered with IEC so they can stand a chance to be in power without firstly establishing who they are exacly. If Cope was genuine, they would have taken they time to establish themselves, craft genuine policies craft genuine policies to fight the ruling party. They have instead chosen to rush things.

Themba 11/24/2008 2:45:37 PM
Tshepo and Mapholoba you seem to be more angry than the Cope leaders you mentioned.Anyway if you want to see greedy people look no further than the ANC. A piece of advice calling people stupid says a lot about you. Mapholoba there are no terms in the ANC constitution.

KMK 11/24/2008 2:46:41 PM
COPE this, Cope that. This is starting to irritate. Monareng, you are desperately trying to sell us a packaged empty container. For people to start jumping ship for a party that is "yet to be formed" and policies that are yet to be drafted is pointless. Please do not insult our intelligence by comparing ANC to ZANU-PF. Cope people failed in Polokwane to create a Zanu pf by re-electing Mbeki for 3rd term. For your information, ANC is still the party to vote for.

Dave Robbins 11/24/2008 2:48:04 PM
It is only at that time will we see what COPE (or whatever it is going to be called) stands for. However, I have an inbred reluctance to trust any politician, so I am not expecting too much. Oh yes, and aren't the two arms companies due in court on the 8th? That might add some interesting "spice" to who is clean going into the election....

SimonP 11/24/2008 2:55:43 PM
FYI COPE do not want AA abolished they want to keep it but NOT based on race. Is it OK for ANC to be angry but not COPE? Pls answer or dont you have one?

Amazed 11/24/2008 2:56:48 PM
It has been 14 years since the ANC came in to power. Problems have increased in regards to crime and job creation. Will COPE really be the answer? Where were the COPE leaders when decisions were made? ANC has forgotten why they were created. People come first in a democracy not money and power. Who do we vote for if the majority is blind.

seema 11/24/2008 2:57:54 PM
I was watching Asikhulume last night i tell you similar policies , i ask myself are they really stupid or thats how it is , could it be ur political landscape doesnt allows such different margin . Afterall we not the USA we are not debating whether we need to pull out the soldiers from Iraq or not . I feel the determining factor should be implementation, application effectiveness and effecient process .Generally most parties have acceptable policies . We need to be vigilant in our implementation

Mafika 11/24/2008 3:03:40 PM
How stupid for Shikota to call for scrapping these policies just because they and their families have benefited from, that is how arrogant is Shikota leaders. This country companies are still employing more whites than balcks but they have guts to go around spit this nonsense.

Duzi 11/24/2008 3:05:15 PM
Tsepho has nothing intellegent to add or debate so all he does is insult... Insults are the first option for a person who doesn't know what he is talking about... grow a back bone and qualify your arguments... or don't you know how?

Joburg Boykie 11/24/2008 3:12:23 PM
The ANC has announced it will launch its election manifesto in January in the Amathole region of the Eastern Cape - "the home of the ANC".

Martin 11/24/2008 3:13:45 PM
Please can you explain how AA contributed to SA? By the way AA was also a huge factor in Zim, that planned out nicely.

DUMZA 11/24/2008 3:16:09 PM
LET US TEACH OURSELVES TO BE TOLERANT OF OPPOSING OTHER PEOPLES VIEWS AND CONVICTIONS! IF YOU BELIEVE THAT ZUMA HAS THE CAPABILITIES TO DELIVER AND TAKE OUR COUNTRY FURTHER, THEN BY ALL MEANS VOTE FOR HIM! THAT WITHSTANDING APPLIES TO US PEOPLE WHO HAVE NO CONFIDENCE IN HIS LEADERSHIP, HAVE A BLOOD BOUGHT RIGHT TO VOTE AND THROW OUR VERY HEAVY WEIGHT BEHIND THE MOVEMENT WE BELIEVE STAND FOR VALUE THAT WERE CHERISHED BY THE GREAT OR TAMBO AND THE OTHER GIANTS OUR STRUGGLE.

Duzi 11/24/2008 3:22:08 PM
These are comments I can respect and appreciate. Tollerance is all that is needed... after all, we are all South Africans aren't we? Well said my friend!

Point Blank 11/24/2008 3:30:49 PM
It isn't even a suprise anymore to read ANC supporters comments. They sound like a bunch of baboons on a hot tin roof. Like their whipping boy Malema, waving fists, insulting and threatening... I firmly believe the ANC is already like ZANU-PF, it won't be long and the ANC will die, 2014 replaced with forced laws and henchmen to enforce them and lo behold if you oppose because they will decide what is good for you. Carry on acting like you are the more you comment the more votes you lose..

Point Blank 11/24/2008 3:33:39 PM
Violent, militant, intolerant, insulting, disrupting and arrogant. No longer suprised and the thing is you all say the same things, almost like you've been brainwashed into a one track mind or you the same person using different names, or as I like to believe you simply cannot think for yourselves...

Jumping Jack Flash 11/24/2008 3:33:57 PM
I agree with your article that the ANC has drifted from what Nelson was actually trying to establish. ANC would have been fine if they actually had delievered on their promises and not put such an IDIOTIC leader like Zuma behind the wheel. Now he has steered off course and has decided that his taxi is a 4x4, so he feels he can now go anywhere....shame poor ANC and the sheep that follow!

Lucky Ralawe 11/24/2008 3:35:46 PM
B4 COPE was formed Lekota wrote a letter to the ANC which raised issues such as respect for the Rule of Law, the independence of the judiciary, equality before the law. Typical of the current ANC NEC & its followers, they responded by calling him names. He then broke ranks. 4 those who claim COPE doesn't have policies, Lekota said their policies won't b different from those of the ANC. Right now the focus is on dislodging the current band who talk w/out thinking, who R holding the country ransom

nicole 11/24/2008 3:35:47 PM
Wow, you ANC supporters talk of COPE being formed in anger yet you are the ones breaking up meetings, burning things, protesting and threatening to kill Lekota and Shilowa. If you practice tolerance like you preach stop with the name calling and let the election speak for itself. You only vote for the ANC because you are waiting for a handout that will never come! In time you will see...

Steph 11/24/2008 3:39:01 PM
I wonder all the time why these ANC loyalists keep reading the stories relating to COPE. They don't like it and yet they read it. Maybe the same applies to your party of favour. You don't like it, but you will vote for it. All who critisise this young man are intimidated because they don't know any better, and have nothing better to do.

Lucky Ralawe 11/24/2008 3:39:39 PM
So for people like Mlungisi, Mapholoba, Jabu Pule etc, even if the ANC were to be hijacked by the Taliban, they will vote for the ANC! The ANC has been hijacked by criminals by the way. Repeating lies that COPE's leaders want to cling to power is not going to make it more believable. Stick with your ANC for sentimental reasons, and let those who put the country above an individual build a credible opposition if not take over completely.

Hero 11/24/2008 3:40:10 PM
To all you ANC supporters who are so eager to vote Zuma into being the next president..did you know that Zuma said on a few occasions that he would "TAKE DOWN MANY OTHERS" if prosecuted for the Arms Deal Saga !! Zuma is a joke ! You need to take a cold shower !!

fedup 11/24/2008 3:41:17 PM
i suggest you read the Sunday Times article form yesterday!!! and also I HAVE BEEN COPE'ING with with the ANC very well thus far, im still going to COPE with it for the next 100 yrs.

Point Blank 11/24/2008 3:42:08 PM
Um, didn't one of the current NEC members join COPE? Also, didn't the ID second in charge join COPE? So your COPE PEOPLE FAILED IN POLOKWANE statement is unjustified. You sound angry and bitter and a little ZANU-PFish to me.

victor Tautota 11/24/2008 3:44:51 PM
I appreciate the ANC for what they have accomplished in the past decade, but it does realy mean we have to turn a blind eye to what is happening in our own country. For the mere fact that ANC was a vehicle that carried us for decades to cross the bridge and huddle of our horible past, it does not mean we have to stick to it even if they are and going wrong. Look at Zimbabwe, Mugabe was one of the best African Leaders, yet today he's the worst & some people are still following him. we need COPE!!

Hero 11/24/2008 3:45:50 PM

I couldn't agree more with your article. I was disappointed Yesterday morning when I attended COPEs meeting in Vereening to see the ANCs regional members disrupting the meeting. Firstly, COPE had booked & payed for the municipality hall but they had to convene their meeting outside the hall because the ANC had refused with the keys and were toy-toying and confronting COPE members while the policemen watching...I wonder if this is the democracy that the ANC has been advocating for all these years

Mandela had a vision - one that thousands of South AFricans voted for. And in the beginning there was hope and jubulation. Then came reverse racism and quiet diplomacy and now finally we have the Zanu PF clone with his bully boy tactics. Mandela had a dream but there is no way it is the same dream as Zuma has. Mandela is out their helping children and AIDS victims. Zuma is doing a Mugabe. ANC has undergone severe change. Say no to this change.

ANC supporters keep saying that COPE was formed by angry people and yet if you have a look at the comments, all the ANC supporters are very angry and you can just hear them all saying the same thing - things which their leader have told them. They have no minds of their own, they just regurgitate whatever they have been told without really understanding what they are saying. Shame people, your ANC is dying and you are scared and confused. This is your ANC that has made you so afraid of anything that is not ANC. Take a brave step outside of that cult and realise that all your fears are unfounded. Apartheid will never be back, in spite of what your leaders have told you, nobody wants it back, as for the free ride the ANC is promising you - it will never happen. Nothing is free and that money has got to come from somewhere - if you keep milking a cow without feeding it or taking care of it, how long do you think you will keep getting milk? At the very least, open your minds. Attend a COPE meeting with an open mind and no preconceptions - you may be surprised to find that things are not as the ANC have told you they are, if not, you are free to go back to the ANC.

Justice4Ol 11/24/2008 3:59:36 PM

The youth of today gets a university degree and thinks it entitles them to an instant managereal position. In the real world and the rest of the planet that paper gives you a toe hold to get into a company. You work your way up the corporate ladder - hence gather experience that makes you a manager. Experienced managers can run a company. Somebody out of college with a degree doesn't stand a chance. It is neither fair to the company or the graduate. We don't need AA or BEE - we need patience.

It is not only policy that differentiates one organization from another; it's values and ethics. It's at the level of ethics and general conduct that the ANC betrays its values and its moral authority to govern as the erstwhile liberation movement. The hijacking of the ANC by the SACP and Cosatu is no small issue. The general atmosphere of ill-discipline; lack of internal democracy; cult worship of Jacob Zuma - a seriously flawed and weak leader - class exclusivity, if not hatred!

Duzi 11/24/2008 4:19:21 PM
mate, we're not all COPE supporters... we're just more tolerant than you are. Some would call your stand point ignorant... but it's ok. The people who started apartheid were ignorant and intolerant too... strange how there will always be someone who shoots something down with insults when they have nothing concrete to add... your loss, not mine...

Mafika my friend, you need to dry your eyes and move on. This whole AA nonsense is a crock of rubbish. What give anyone the right to the job because of the colour of his skin?? Surely a man should be selected for a job according to his skills, and his ability to perfom in the position?? You can sit back and say you never had these opportunities in the past, why reverse the situation now? Tired of hearing the same thing over and over. Everyone has an equal opportunity, it's what you make of it!!

Well written Mphajtie. Hey Jabu, are you angry? What are you still fighting for? You are ruled by your fellow comrade. WHAT? Clear this up for us as you seem to know EVERYTHING about politics.

This shows we need more Madibas or opposition(Cope,DA) is needed. The 2/3 ANC majority has proven to dangerous, especially with monkeys(Zuma&co) behind the wheel. We need COPE more than ever and ANC(Zumanoids) stop acting so Desperate u will rule until JESUS comes.HAHAHA!!!! Viva Cope Viva, Viva Inclusiveness Viva.
