Vonk 'a good goalie'

by Mike Fraser
2009-11-06 15:00

Dear Editor,

I fully agree with Roger De Sa that Hans Vonk should be our number one choice goalkeeper for 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup.

Hans Vonk just has all the qualities that South Africa need to allow our players to play with more confidence.

His overall play will free up his back row defenders to play a more offensive game, instead of protecting the goalkeeper against crosses and set pieces. Vonk is tall, deals well with crosses and set pieces. He commands his goal area with confidence, he is always communicating with his players. He will definitely be a calming and stabilising influence on the team.

He is very good in dealing with the high balls, especially with tall opposing players crowding the goal area at corner-kicks and set pieces. Vonk is also a good shot stopper. He goes down well. And the greatest attribute of Hans Vonk is that his consistency.

Itumeleng Khune, the current Bafana number one keeper, is a good South African professional club goalkeeper, and that's about it. Khune is not up to international goalkeeping standards. He is small, which makes him very vulnerable to the high balls in the goal area. His handling of set pieces is always very shaky. He faces set pieces like a rabbit caught in the paralysing bright lights of an oncoming train. His defenders must always provide more than the necessary cover for high balls and set pieces.

The one good thing about Khune is his shot stopping and his distribution from the back.

The other very important thing that Vonk brings to the Bafana team is experience. Vonk has played in the very demanding Dutch professional league. Vonk was still playing in the Dutch league as recently as this year 2009. He has played for Bafana in many international games. Very vital, he has played in a World Cup tournament.
He knows the intricacies involved in such a major tournament.

He was also a Bafana Bafana goalkeeper coach under Carlos Alberto Pareira.

All this is overwhelming evidence that Hans Vonk is Bafana Bafana's number one goalkeeper choice.

The same Vonk who conseded half-a-dozen goals against Golden Arrows? You must be joking.

Biza 11/6/2009 3:19:07 PM
First and foremost: not suitable letter for MyNews24. I'd understand if it was about the whole team......but a letter about one insignificant player....Secondly, the person u're talking about has played for the national team for 15 years if I'm not mistaken and has since been given a break. When he first became keeper, one 'old' goalkeeper had to make way. Why not do the same with him? 3rdly, he's not that good. Even at his peak he was still not exceptional. Just that u're a fan of his. I suggest the next time u write a letter like this, send it to one of the considerably many soccer websites out there

I agree but common, cant we have something beter to debate, im thirsty, and still have 1,5 hours to kill

The Easter Bunny 11/6/2009 3:29:00 PM
The Author wrote "He goes down well"... I bet Jurie Els will think he is number 1 too :)

Brod 11/6/2009 3:33:44 PM
Rubbish, I think that is asking too much from a 60 year old Vonk.

Smanga Zulu 11/6/2009 3:38:02 PM
Joke of the YEAR! Itumeleng Khune and Rowan Fernandez are tops... Vonk is an old man who must retire before he hurts himself... Remember the SIX goals scored against him in ONE match recently... I rest my case!! Now, get me my beer!

Sasj 11/6/2009 3:38:43 PM
Let Andre Arendse decide. He is SA's best goal keeper to date. Vonk is useless compared to him.

hiema 11/6/2009 3:40:14 PM
you must be joking, vonk must retire he is not what he used to be. I still think Moeneed josephs is the best at the momet.

Sam 11/6/2009 3:43:39 PM
I think he makes a good Afirmitave Action appointment for the Bananas. He should be chosen purely on colour. Booth makes it on merit, now we just need an Indian , 2 more Zulu's and 1 Shangaan to complete the Safa banana Circus.

EUGINE 11/6/2009 3:48:39 PM
48MILLION COACHES/SELECTORS CHOOSE ONE. HE HAS REACHED HIS SELL-BY DATE.

Cynical 11/6/2009 4:06:52 PM
Forget Hans Vonk. I think they should select a woman as goalkeeper. I read an article just the other day where the writer said that women are the best goalkeepers because no matter how hard you try, you cannot get the balls in......

Chumani 11/6/2009 4:36:33 PM
Hey, hey Mike or Hans Vonk stop it now. Hell when was the last time you saw Khune play, the boy has come in leaps and bounds and has dealt with his shortcomings quite well. Since we are going on past reputations I dont think you can actually sit there and type up a storm on Hans Vonk since he went and picked up the ball six times from his net in the MTN8 final. As for Khune, the boy had a sterling perfomance during the CONFED cup. Besides Khune, there's Darren Keet, Emile Baron and Moeneeb Joseph. What you probably should be advocating for Vonk is his inclusion as goalkeeper coach for Bafana Bafana, hell come to think of it, even for that he wouldn't qualify in my book. If you look at all the current Bafana Bafana goalkeepers, all with the exception of Moeneeb Joseph, are products of the number one goalkeeper trainer in South Africa at the moment, Rainer Dinkelacker(from Kaizer Chiefs) and now there's a person you should be drumming support for, for inclusion in the National Squad. Enjoy your weekend and forget about "Spark", hy het lankal nie meer lood in sy potlood nie.

Bongani 11/6/2009 5:36:46 PM
Ja and Van Der Saar is also 39 and plays for both Man U and Holland.Vonk plays for Ajax! He's had his chance, time to move on,period. How long do the likes of Keet have to wait?

eugene 11/6/2009 6:27:26 PM
I think they should make Bakkies Botha the goal keeper, and Brain Habanha a striker, maybe get Os in as a defender (no one will mess with him). There I think that could work and make for a better football team.

Stryder 11/6/2009 7:38:09 PM
I have no opinion on this as I do not follow soccer closely enough. But I will say this, for better or worse (just like the bokke) Bafana Bafana is our team and they are playing in the world cup (which is fantastic). I am going to love seeing our team play in the greatest spectacle on earth. And win or lose I know those guys are going to live and die for South Africa. Viva Bafana Bafana Viva!!!

themba 11/6/2009 10:28:43 PM
I thought Vonk had grandchildren. Why not bring Patson Banda or even Gary Bailey, if we are after grandfathers?

Robert 11/7/2009 8:44:10 AM
I don't know if Vonk is a good choice at such a late stage in his career, but you do make some good points. I think that SA have generally done for keepers that are shot stoppers, but not those that clean up well and basically prevent the shot in the first page.

@ Biza, you are obviously a fool. Firstly Insignificant? If any one player was insignificant nobody would ever bother picking that player... for any other insignificant position either for that matter. And do some maths. While quite some time ago, Vonk was NO1 at France. '98 wasn't that just 11 years ago?

@ Easter Bunny... hahahaha...

Sganja 11/7/2009 11:51:11 AM
Vonk?Yawn

Wesley 11/7/2009 6:51:53 PM

"The so called Mike Fraser"
it is unfortunate that Vonk at his best would never match Khune at his worst that is how good the boy is, Vonk was recently badly exposed by Golden Arrows expecially the 2 last goals, no professional keeper should be scored by those balls. Vonk has a huge Ego, so i guess nobody in the Bafana set-up would be willing to work with him.Lastly Khune is the best goal keeper in South Africa. Before i forget Vonk is white so he belongs on Orangia or OZ

You obviously have no idea what you are talking about.

tman 11/9/2009 9:11:16 AM
No offense but this is rubbish, the guy had his chances 2 world cups..wat more does he want, as for him going down well..c the replay of the mtn 8 final, as for De sa and u discrediting Khune..get a life coz the guy is good whether u like it or not and can't be blamed for the poor defence put in front of him, peace!

khami 11/9/2009 10:53:20 AM
bring back Patson Banda..we need to let the past go now we live in the present so let the best goal keeper take the lead,KUNE show talent during international competition,we did'nt see lack of exposure but he has confidence but yes we need to complement him with good back line like any other team in the world.Kune is the man of the [WC 2010]series

Getta Grip 11/9/2009 4:49:50 PM
Take a look and see what the current SA selection policies have achieved so far with SA soccer.....I predict an early and embarressing exit next year. What happened to the white players? We had 3 or 4 of them when we took the African Cup a very long time ago.
