'Economist who was president'

by Siviwe Matyeli
2009-07-09 12:12

Dear Editor,

Mr Thabo Mbeki will be remembered as the economist who was a president.

What happened during his reign:

1. Ngcuka-Selebi saga's come to my mind.

2. Eskom blackout and government not funding request, despite cheap electricity than developed world benefited by the rich and poor alike.

3. Firing or Zuma, Madlala-Routledge and inaction with Manto and Selebi.

4. Widening of the gap between the haves and the have-nots coupled with GDP increase.

5. SABC collapse starting during this time: board appointment.

6. Two time president of the ANC contesting and losing in elections (it was obvious he'd loose from the masses perspective except from his and the liberal media, he could have saved his face with all the brilliance of an economist from London)

There was excellent work done in the revitalisation of the continent and standing ground on issues even at UN.

I was vicariously satisfied when he was given his medicine by Luthuli house after judge Squires (or which one was it?)

What are you on about? What a stupid article.

Xolani 7/9/2009 12:22:33 PM
@ Siviwe Matyeli -- Talk about kicking a man whilst he is down, The time spent writing this article, You could have volunteered to help out at your local soup kitchen! Very dissapointed in you!

SimonP 7/9/2009 12:23:48 PM
An incompetent with a degree has been replaced with an incompetent without one. So whats changed?

Careful 7/9/2009 12:24:24 PM
Zuma's presidency.... go into the Union Buildings with 3 wives and 19 children, Doctors strike because they not fairly paid, New adminstration change the names of some of the current depts another cost attached with that. he promises 500000 jobs by Dec 2009 whilst 189000 jobs were lost during the first quarter of 2009. JZ does not appoint a commission of inquery into the arms deal why? did he take a second HIV test after that rape saga of his?

zj 7/9/2009 12:25:38 PM
No impresime as we know everything you said about him.

Heartbreaker 7/9/2009 12:29:11 PM
Well said but we must give him credit for the achievements he made during his tenure. The medicine he got was nice he?

the_economist 7/9/2009 12:32:52 PM
pathetic attempt at trying to make a point, what exactly was your point?

Sinudeity 7/9/2009 12:34:23 PM
You forgot to mention the Armsdeal. Which was initially specced to cost South Africa R30 billion. Meanwhile, through all the corruption, its cost us, up to date R100 billion.

Halfwise 7/9/2009 12:38:16 PM
His leadership embarrassed our party if you think about it properly. I made sure in Polokwane that my vote goes for Zuma (Our hard working Leader)

IandI 7/9/2009 12:39:32 PM
Mbeki was also an Aids-denialist, Bob Mugabe's bosom friend and he sometimes visited South Africa to refuel his jet. He never saw the millions of unemployed by the roadside(his limo indows were tnted to dark)and he said there was no crises in Zim and No HIV. What else is he remembered for, oh yes..poetry.

Rolem 7/9/2009 12:46:07 PM
Negativity outshines Positivity, TM's good deeds and shortcomings will shape future leaders of this country. Siviwe please move forward man, I'm sure soon you'll be writing something about Apartheid no wonder this country is moving backwards.

Leslie Masinga 7/9/2009 12:47:20 PM
mbeki is so stupid, he can't even spell ekonomist

fasheezy 7/9/2009 12:49:28 PM
where are all the good things that happenend during his reign? please stop wasting our time and go back to school.

Maverick 7/9/2009 12:49:40 PM
good riddance, he did nothing about crime, corruption, farm killings, burning down of farms, looting from the land by his barbarian followers, looting from the economy, ect.....

TERRY YOUENS 7/9/2009 12:52:40 PM
What about his refusal to fire Manto and the consequences of that . Also lying to the country about Selebe ?

Mandla Mahlangu 7/9/2009 12:54:59 PM
'Economist who was a president' 'ngcuka selebi saga' 'firing of zuma'well how does this mix, where is the economosit? or is firing people make him an economist

harryb 7/9/2009 12:56:10 PM
He did nothing good for SA. He was at the right place at the right time. It didn't matter who led the country, investments were going to come into the country. He started the rot.

samsam 7/9/2009 12:58:05 PM
Dont forget Vodafone deal, with his cronies Smut Ngonyama, for me that was clear indication that this guy was controlled by greedy/inconsiderate mafias but guys do you look back and see that these people were HIJACKING the govt. Who is Mzi Khumalo, Saki etc anyway thanks ZUMA for your braveness after so many men were so scared. Let me share this with you. Tokyo, Phosa, Cyril wanted to split and form their own party, they consulted Mandela, he told them to go to ZUMA who was a deputy , Zuma advised them not to go that way , he advised them to come together and fight against these mafias. That’s the reason why Zuma keeps on saying he owes nobody, in actual fact SA owes Zuma who fought these tyrants, daaamn, meen

Mike F 7/9/2009 1:00:36 PM
The only reason this article was written & published is to display the writer's ignorance bias. Please Siviwe, engage the brain before putting pen to paper. What the heck were you thinking?????

Nico 7/9/2009 1:08:36 PM
Vicariously you say? According to the dictionary vicariousy can be defined as one organ performing the actions that are normally done by another. Which is clearly the case with this article as your mouth is performing the action normally done by your ass.

a p 7/9/2009 1:08:55 PM
yes, only negative things come to mind when thinking of thabo mbeki. You forgot to add collapse of home affairs and health care, the land bank, becoming a nett importer of food, the Zimbawe issue, the denial of the existence of crime, the dislike for other race s etc etc and so the list could go on and on.All this while he was jet setting to any part of the world you can think of and solving nothing. We are in much better hands now as our new president,j z, seems to be a reconciling and nation building president, which can only benefit the nation as a whole.

Juan 7/9/2009 1:11:32 PM
If an 'economist' was so pathetic..how much more pathetic is an uneducated 'dancer'?

Glock 22 c 7/9/2009 1:13:55 PM
NO NO NO the anc will be remnembered for all these failure's. I quote THE ANC IS BIGGER THAN ONE MAN. We on here have heard that a million times. You anc freak need to open your eyes if you dont want to be left behind in another zimbabwe.

SABELO S 7/9/2009 1:14:30 PM
@Siviwe if going to school, as Fasheezy suggests you should do, will make you as blind as he is I think it's best you remain uneducated.

Frank 7/9/2009 1:22:00 PM
The ANC blames Mbeki for their party's mistakes, in 5 years time we will hear how Zuma and only Zuma was responsible for the disaster he is busy creating. If this country is run by a single man and not a government can we not chuck 400 MPs' of the gravy train?

Dries 7/9/2009 1:22:58 PM
I'll remeber him as the guy who with the help of Manto killed more than 300000 South Africans because poverty and not HIV cause Aids. I remember him as the fool who was president.

Yebo Yes 7/9/2009 1:23:14 PM
@Nico... AHAHAH!!! Nice one dude.

Lucky Ralawe 7/9/2009 1:27:51 PM
Now this article is really scraping the bottom of the barrel. Shows the nature of intellect possessed by those robotic sheep who support the Rev Dr Kangaman

makhathe 7/9/2009 1:27:57 PM
disgusting piece; the man is the best thing that has ever happened to SA....like it or not. Architects of Poverty are governing just to advance more poverty.

AJAX 7/9/2009 1:31:34 PM
WHAT IS THE DANCER WITH AN EMPTY HEAD GONA DO?

godfrey 7/9/2009 1:32:50 PM
Eish Siviwe, try another hobby. Writing is not for you!

Bonny 7/9/2009 1:33:48 PM
So essentially we have moved from the frying pan into the fire, in terms of leaders...
@ Nico..brilliant comment :-)

TickleMePink 7/9/2009 1:41:58 PM
Yes agreed, only negative thoughts come with thinking about Mbeki, but you don't know the landslide of negative thoughts there are when thinking of ol' JZ...ama shower dance with the stars so called 2nd jezus coming leader....SA is lost to the millions of morons that live there, like poliodonkey and Halftwit..........

Poloyatonki @ fasheezy 7/9/2009 1:43:34 PM
Give us one good thing that he did.... I cant remember him doing anything good!!!!!!!

moja 7/9/2009 1:45:50 PM
Cde, your headline is misleading but i like the body. He did bad than good, his legacy will forever being tainted with his greedy and detactership

heartbreaker @ Jaun 7/9/2009 1:50:13 PM
Jaun,u must know that the ueducated dancer is your president. He is also taxing, your safety is his responsibility.Stay cool.

H 7/9/2009 1:52:07 PM
Vote out the one and vote the other in they are the same. It ia all about money and power screw the people.

E-buti 7/9/2009 1:54:20 PM
Siviwe my friend...How does one relay this delicately. Apart from your ideoligical misdirection you are just a shocking author. There is no flow, direction or proper concorde in your writing. In order to promote your opinion for acceptance you need to first perfect the tools to do so. Otherwise you do not only stand to embarrass yourself but also the people & opinion you are trying to represent. Hoaw! That was bad bantwana!

Anon 7/9/2009 1:56:10 PM
@ Halfwise, Mzi & Samsam. Now if you could only with the same passion critisize the injustices of the current government like you do with the past (ANC Mbeki), then life would indeed come Full-Circle for you. Seems that your eyes only open when "a new president" is in office, then you see the fu@#-ups of the past president (who you so enthusiastic supported when he was president and could do no wrong).

Denver 7/9/2009 1:56:52 PM
Would he have saved us from the current recesssion? No!! So did he not ride the wave before the bubble burst. He will remembered for the Eskom fiasco , his silence towards the tormentor Mugabe and his handling of AIDS. Hopefully Zuma will be able to reunite a divided nation and take this country foward.

vig 7/9/2009 1:58:48 PM
Siviwe please you've got your President now focus the promises made to the Taxi industry, Health and poor people not forgetting half-a-million jobs in 5months. Leave the honorable intellect to retire peacefully. You've got what you wanted now Shut Up, enough about our former President!

Jay 7/9/2009 2:02:59 PM
Firstly, he was an Aids denialist. Although linked with your Point 3, it is not really on your list. That is what made Mbeki and SA the laughing stock of the world during esp the last 6 years of his reign. Regarding the other items you are correct and to the point.

Just a pity that his lack of disciplining his two Ministers of Education clearly shows in the writings of young journalists like yourself.

That should be Point 2 on your list: Failing Education.

chris 7/9/2009 2:40:35 PM
Why refer to his economics education? You are linking his failures to being an economist wihtout offering any explination. Poor writing, 1 out of 10 for you!

Louis 7/9/2009 2:42:21 PM
Well old Tarboy just carried on with the slide into chaos started by the terrorist Nelson Mandela. We are turning into another Zimabawe faster than any African country could ever have hoped for.

pontsho mosoeu 7/9/2009 2:47:24 PM
what exactly are you trying to say?your speaking abt the former president order.

SimonP 7/9/2009 2:47:27 PM
Samsam, where do you learn all this fascinating info about Tokyo etal? Who told you this or did you make it up and tell us because fantasy is far better than the reality.

Miss L 7/9/2009 2:49:47 PM
every man has weaknesses as much as you pointing out all these what are on about, anything positive that happened why you left it out?Remember nobody is perfect!

ZJ 7/9/2009 2:50:22 PM
Siviwe and your co-anc, you are talking about someone who knows there are loopholes & hamps on the road and inspite of that you are still talking bad things about him. Remember if you are not growing you are dying therefore TM moved forward already as he will be training the leaders of tomorow and let me tell you some anc members and followers like you will register and attend you will see maybe even zuma as he is the best friend of TM and he is also the co-owner you will see.

SimonP 7/9/2009 2:51:04 PM
@Anon (1:56:10) those three idiots have the moemory of goldfish, when JZ has been toppled by the next chancer, what bad mouthing will we hear from the the three wise men. In true ANC denialist form they will deny ever backing Zuma.

predo 7/9/2009 2:51:55 PM
mbeki will be remembered as an utter failure in every aspect of governance. The only thing he was a successful in was to reaffirm the african stereotype.

@ Leslie Masinga 7/9/2009 2:52:31 PM
LMAO ,"mbeki is so stupid, he can't even spell ekonomist"

nether can you... hahaha

ProffesorPiPito 7/9/2009 3:02:19 PM
Mbeki finished with a bad note, and of course there are some issues about his administration.
Still respect his leadership style.
Only human are born to make mistakes, and so is Thabo et al.

Anon @ SimonP 7/9/2009 3:11:10 PM
Can already see the heading of the letter "The showerhead that was a president"?

T 7/9/2009 3:20:56 PM
What a waste of time this article is.

Richie 7/9/2009 3:23:42 PM
Waste of time article, i will remember good time on our economy.

indermark dude 7/9/2009 3:38:19 PM
Le a Nyela guys Mbeki was a good leader who unfortunately happend to lead a group of overoportunistic people, his legacy will forever be cherished i think zuma's work is cut his is just to change department names and sing.

fern 7/9/2009 3:40:53 PM
low quality biased article.

fern 7/9/2009 3:47:34 PM
The largest growth in GDP this country has seen happened during his presidency you ignoramus.

sindy 7/9/2009 3:47:54 PM
What a stupid idea Siviwe I agree with you guys Siviwe has to go back to school and study and before you write you must know your story and stop wasting our time.

SABELO S 7/9/2009 3:49:16 PM
@CAREFUL You are not the sharpest knife in the drawer are you? The grey matter between your ears is a pathetic excuse for a brain, if that's what you call it. Ave ungahlakaniphanga.

@SABELO 7/9/2009 4:01:01 PM
Why do you call him stupid? did he mention nothing but 100% facts? my dear friend your blind support leaves your attempted turn of guilt sour and without merit. FAIL for you sir!

zanele 7/9/2009 4:13:12 PM
He did great job, what Jz doing now?

Michael 7/9/2009 4:24:18 PM
What a stupid article! Lemme guess, a JZ supporter who wants to place blame squarely on the shoulders of one man, so that he can fool himself into believeing it's not the ANC's fault, but that of Thabo Mbeki. What an ignorant idiot you are Siviwe.

LUx 7/9/2009 4:27:44 PM
I think I know this disturb young man ( Siviwe ). He was never involved in politics so his slinder mind atest to that. JZ promise many people thats why now is a liability in this country. He wants to follow Tat'Mandela footsteps and Zizi's. Blade promised free educ. but he says that dream will be realised in 15 years from now. They complain that Zizi was never in the country but what is happening with Pres. zuma now?

SM 7/9/2009 4:34:15 PM
And they were all from the anc. Mandela, mbeki, motlanthe and now zuma. I would suggest that in January 2010 we take a piece of paper for each and list their (1) proises, (2) achievements (including delivering on promises) (3)failures and last, but not least, their moral behaviour.

Onismus 7/9/2009 4:35:24 PM
@Nico
Hahahahaha. Nice one man.

mayweather 7/9/2009 4:44:36 PM
Infuture, learn to balance your argument. TM had his flaws but during his era, SA registered growth like no other period. He was instrumental in forming Nepad and helped African leaders grow in stature, though no one is saying this, but i am. From the start, I didn't like teh fact that he was "imported" to be our prez, not many knew about him before. To me what irked me most, was when he single-handedly introduced xhosanostraism in political SA, and to me that was unforgiveable!!! Sa is for all, we come from that era of favouritism cording to colour, but TM was re-introducing discrimination on another front, ethnicism. We didn't want another rwanda on our doorstep, am not saying you pale-skinned guys must go and forment ethnicism as a means of you coming back to power....

Mtha 7/9/2009 5:30:02 PM
Who ever wrote this article is very stupid and must spend his time on charity work as some has suggested. How do you fault a man that Zuma himself acknowldge that he will not change anything he did. But will only strengthen the gaps that were there. In short fool Mbeki build the foundation that has led us to the highest GDP ever, Peace in Africa, 2010 world soccer cup, Infrastructure that you see everywhere, the Black middle class that has mushroomed everywhere, the Voice of Africa and other marginilised people of the world in UN, growth in Africa that has led the world to have interest in Africa again. That is why some of us are not moved by your intellectulism or lack of it that you are fed by these white doomsday commentators.

lm 7/10/2009 9:05:18 AM
And the relevance of this article is???

Xolani 7/10/2009 10:10:38 AM
@Juan - I still dont see your name on Pierre's site
here is the link again : http://constitutionallyspeaking.co.za

No man! 7/10/2009 10:18:05 AM
Come on dude, how long has Mbeki been out of the presidency already and you write this article NOW????? has it taken you this long to think what to write?? Get over yourself man. This is EXACTLY why we are where we are, we keep looking behind us instead of looking forward! Mbeki did good an bad, so has EVERY president in history. DEAL WITH IT! Rather comment on a guy who blows up an ATM getting 70 odd years in prison, and a guy who rapes a woman gets only 4. Talk about a worthwhile topic dude!
