Vodacom 'not all that bad'

by Louis
2009-11-03 07:15

Dear Editor,

Roughly 18 months ago, I reported the problem of continued dropped calls and general bad cellphone reception to my service provider, Vodacom.  I was quite surprised when I received a call back within an hour of someone to obtain more details of the problem and the location.

In the next few weeks I had two more calls from them telling me that the problem was that the towers in the general area could not cover a small stretch where I lived, but that a new tower has been commissioned.

In my cynical attitude, I just thought "yeah, yeah whatever" and resigned myself to the fact that I will have bad reception for time to come.

About six months later I accepted a job offer in Dubai and in the last year that I have been here, I received quite a few text messages to remind me that Vodacom was still working on the problem.

Last week I got another text message - this time proudly stating that there is a new tower active in the area and inviting me to report any problems with it.

Why am I telling you this? We have grown so used to poor service in our country that we actually forget that there are glimmers of hope and that companies like Vodacom actually do care.

On this, my dear fellow Safricans, we have no idea what bad poor service is when compared to other parts of the world...

Thank you, Vodacom. I have renewed hope that our awesome country will get strong again!

Louis

Thanks to you Louis, it is people like you I admire the most.

@ all blind moaners and whingers, if you don't appreciate good service then don't complain about bad service.

KarenP 11/3/2009 7:40:16 AM
I worked for Vodacom for about 8 months on a contract basis, and the work ethic is incredible. Complaints and resolution are monitored from "above", and although you will always find a few "rotten apples", in general the Vodacom way is to "go the extra mile" - I often worked till late at night because we had a problem solving turnaround time of 5 hours. I have worked for many companies afterwards within the customer related field, but to me Vodacom have remained the yardstick of service excellence. A lot of companies can learn a thing or two from them. I also believe it's the way in which personnel is motivated - good work is recognized and rewarded and personnel is forever encouraged to improve their skills and education - not only to the benefit of Vodacom, but to the benefit of their personnel ...

Lee 11/3/2009 7:41:32 AM
I think maybe you're just one on the lucky ones. As far as I am concerned Vodacom (read VodaCON) sucks big time. I have wasted thousands of rands on 3G modems and data bundles - as well as time on the phone trying to get them to sort out problems. I could write a book on the sheer hell we've been through with Vodacom. Sorry, but I can't share your happy sentiments about Vodacom. Consider yourself to be very lucky.

Conscience 11/3/2009 7:42:06 AM
I live in central Centurion and had a similar problem with dropped calls and losing signal. I phoned Vodacom and complained about this as well as the slow speed. At that stage it was blamed on heavy traffic, but I told them that I had better reception and speeds on the GPRS band in Saldanha than the 3G band in Centurion. It was ridiculous. I called 3 times in the matter of 2 months and also resigned myself to continued bad service. After another two months I received a call out of nowhere from Vodacom to inform me that a new tower will be erected in Centurion. Although speeds are sometimes slow at peak times, the service is much better now. THanks Vodacom.

Noko YA mosebe 11/3/2009 7:52:04 AM
BUT the night shift thingz is a problem. If they care about their customer they rather give free minutes during day Hour not from 12 midnight to 5am,these people will keep calling us at the middle of the night worse they make log coverstion that never end.so far cell made it easy by giving ther client free minutes whenever(during the day you get free 30 minute or even more to use withing a week). For us people who live in rural and farms areas ,Vodacom is the answer to our all daily cellphone(telecommunication) network needs.

RdP 11/3/2009 7:58:22 AM
I am glad you had a positive experience, but for every positive experience their are an equal number of negative ones. I for one have decided to let my contract run out, throw my cell in the sea and become a hermit...

Vivienne 11/3/2009 8:02:16 AM
Sorry to burst your bubble Louis - Vodacom probably only put the tower up so that they can ensure that you are able to make lots of calls and are able to sms so that they can charge you their exorbitant fees. I used to work in Rivonia and spent an entire year going back and forth with Vodacom about putting up a new tower in the area which after 2.5 years they still have not done. And this was an expensive part of Rivonia. Service delivery and bad service is the only thing we do have in Africa. We are the worst in the world. I have traveled extensively and have never seen as poor service anywhere else in the world as we have to endure here in Africa. Only when calls costs come down will I believe in Vodacom again, until then all cellular providers are ripping us off with call/sms/contract costs.

Paul 11/3/2009 8:02:38 AM
Wow! Perhaps we should do less complaining about things and more reporting? I too live in a small secluded place outside Sedgefield. My wife is on MTN and I'm on Vodacom. we have to use her connection for the internet as only MTN has 3G coverage here and Vodacom only 2G. Unfortunately my e-mail address is tied to Vodacom and I never seem to be able to wait those extra two months for the contract to completely expire before upgrading to a new phone so I'm still stuck with Vodacom. I must say, I've never contacted them officially but I have complained a lot amongst all and sundry. Seems I'm going about this the wrong way! What is that number you dialed louis?
Paul

Moses 11/3/2009 8:04:03 AM
I am a Zimbabwean living in Tanzania, Vodacom is my preferred network, but sadly after emailing customer care asking them why I could not receive sms from Zimbabwe, I am still waiting for the actual response, I have only received an automated reply to acknowledge my query.

Exlover 11/3/2009 8:08:44 AM
I say nationalise Vodacom and MTN. NUMSA are fighting for Patrice Motsepe and Tokyo to be nationalised. Are people crazy or they just want media coverage?

Gerhard 11/3/2009 8:15:40 AM
You are right about extreme poor service in SA but to state that VodaCON "not all that bad" is ridiculous! They SUCK. All they care about is to receive their "contract" money and dont give a s@#t about the service they deliver. Can wright a book on them on how NOT to provide service to clients. Will NEVER go into a VodaCON contract EVER again

Sam 11/3/2009 8:17:13 AM
Well, not to sound negitive, lest I be called a whiner but my experience was quite different. Has anyone ever tried phoning Vodaincompetent? You will never get through. My prepaid cell was stolen in a country where service is much better but poverty is much worse. Anyway I get back, try to take out a contract and get my old number back before I have to leave again. 3 days trying to getsomeone that can help me and 2 days standing in ques with unfriendly staff that think they are doing you a favour, please you don't have a lue how bad service is. Maybe Dubai is worse but there are plenty of much better services nations in the world.

Seems 11/3/2009 8:20:14 AM
Good, now I can switch to Vodacom, have been using M-T-N for databundles. I normally purchase 2GB, which according to them lasts for 60 days alas they last for less than 40 days and not 60 as their claim. Meaning one loses out on nearly half of the purchase price. I reported this problem to them many times but they never seems to fix it nor even refund the lost databundles.

Nicol 11/3/2009 8:24:39 AM
Getting a few calls and sms's does not sort out the problem. I dropped the same call 5 times yesterday (Vodacom to Vodacom) whilst standing still with full signal on my screen. The networks are in a mess and it will take a massive effort to get them sorted out. In the interim we must pay some of the highest rates in the world with some of the worst service. But hey, were obviously used to that - we only post useless complaints on web sites!

Talitha 11/3/2009 8:26:45 AM
Sometimes it is possible to change a supplier…………..
Unfortunately some you are stuck with…………..

IceCreamMan 11/3/2009 8:31:55 AM
They fix the problem 18 months later and you are impressed. Dont take much to impress you does it?

Johan Britz @ Seems 11/3/2009 8:32:51 AM
Unless I am reading this wrong, it doesn't sound to me that you know much about IT and computers. 2gb can last 1 hour, or 1000 years. It depends how much you download/browse the internet. The 60 days they claim is clearly for someone that checks mail now and then and a minimal amount of browsing. You use more than that so yours runs out quicker.

Uncle Bob 11/3/2009 8:33:13 AM
Well done Louis! It is natural for people to give you the brush-off if all you do is complain the whole time! Why is is that we do not take the time to acknowledge good service (albeit that we pay for it), but can spend hours wastng energy, complaining about bad service?

Fizz 11/3/2009 8:40:15 AM
I totally agree. Ive been with Vodacom for 11 years and have had a few issues which have been sorted out timeously and with dedication. I once even had a call escalated to the ECLO in the MDs office who personally phoned me and helped me with a problem which he had himself experienced. Definately the best customer service in the entire country. Pitty they rip us off though. But at least Im paying for a service and getting it. Unlike Government.

Dr Filemon 11/3/2009 8:43:25 AM
Vodacom's inter-connect fee is higher than the total call cost in Namibia which shows how they rip you off so they ARE "all that bad"

WK 11/3/2009 8:44:40 AM
The general problem in the country is one of I don't care, the sevice of ABSA,Vodacom,MTN Cell-C,Eskom and the like are we don't care and who is going to do something about it, the interconnect charges is one prime example of ICASA inability to sort out the mess- Shame on You

scrubz 11/3/2009 8:46:21 AM
@seems:the 60 days is how long its valid for.used 2 be 30 days, then mtn introduced rolling bundles,so vodacom was forced 2 do it.but all in all, they still suck big time.vodacom's service is absolute k@k-they steal from their customers, voice calls constantly dropped,3g signal ALWAYS weak no matter where u are..all in all, they suck big time!

Stephen 11/3/2009 8:47:45 AM
Vodacom and Cell C have already cut the wholesalers margins to compensate themselves for the future loss of earnings for the lower inter-connection fees that the governement wants. For the hawkers in and ssmes in my area they have cut the profit margin by 11%

stretch 11/3/2009 8:47:55 AM
talk about setting yourself up! why don't you walk around with a "I LUV VODACOM" t-shirt on? That way the snipers can take you out more easily

@Zizo 11/3/2009 8:48:25 AM
If you accept poor service delivery dont tell those that dont what to do.

Teldin 11/3/2009 8:52:37 AM
18 months is ridiculous! The problem should have been sorted out with in a day or two.
South Africa offers poor server where ever you go. Living overseas you realize that people don't stand for bad service and only expect the best. I think it is time that South Africans stand up for better service and delivery

Logan 11/3/2009 8:53:36 AM
Keep in mind that the networks cannot just simply erect new towers, there is a whole process to be followed and permission needs to be obtained. Vodacom is SA's leading cellular network company and it certainly deserves to be!

peter 11/3/2009 8:58:18 AM
Gerhard, i totally agree with you. I have had many problems with signal, calls dropping, being overcharged on my monthly bill and have called vodacom for help, after waiting for about 45 minutes to get through, and explaining all my problems the person says they will have to transfer me, haha what a joke. After waiting another 30 minutes for someone to answer the phone, i again have to explain all my problems from the start. Then they tell me they will log the fault and someone will call me back. After waiting for about 2 days and nobody calling me back, i decide to call again and instead of talking to another dummy i ask to speak to a supervisor, again having to explain all problems from the start. It took about 7- 10 days for them to get working on my fault. all they want is your money honey!!

SimonP 11/3/2009 9:00:39 AM
The private sector has to deliver in order to make profit in a competitive market. I hope no-one is praising the government for Vodacoms service delivery.

Juan 11/3/2009 9:02:22 AM
With the most expensive call rate in the world, one would EXPECT good service!

@ Johan Britz @ Seems 11/3/2009 9:03:28 AM
Johan, what he's referring to is the expiry date. He says they claim that your data does not expire until 60 days, but his expire after 40 days.

MJM 11/3/2009 9:06:40 AM
What I have realised is that one gets better service based on the weight of your bank account or contribution in the society. They probably looked at your monthly bills(calls + subscription fee)and reacted the way they did after all who would want to loose a customer like you pumping in lots of money with those international calls?

LSA 11/3/2009 9:09:41 AM
Shame on all you whiners. Just leave the network if you are not satisfied. Join up with Virgin Mobile!! When there are problems, which is rarely, they sms to say the problem is being sorted out, without you calling them to report the problem. So whiners, just leave those crap network operators and join up with one that works!!!!

Ice^Man 11/3/2009 9:11:34 AM
I am with MTN and their service is pathetic, you have to wait sometimes an hr on their call centre number and would be lucky if someone answers, I have a 3G Data card with vodacom and had trouble connecting and my problem was dealt with efficiently and received 2 calls later asking if the problem was rectified - i have now decided to move my contracts over to Vodacom, once they expire which is next month, MTN has lost a valuable customer who has been with them for the past 15 yrs.

Jim 11/3/2009 9:19:27 AM
I have always enjoyed good service with Vodacom , i guess it depends on what area of the problem you have experienced. In comparison to MTN , Vodacom are far much better. We have 2 3G subscriptions with MTN and ,Vodacom. We live in Centurion MTN was excellent when we signed up but a year down the road, you get a connection but the signal is so low you actually can't do anything on the web, reported this several times all they say is we know the about the problem and are working on it 1 and half yeasr on, no phone call no follow up.Vodacom 3G on the other hand has worked perfectly well.

Deandre 11/3/2009 9:23:25 AM
I fully agree with Vodacom having one of the best service levels. MTN needs to catch a wake-up,they are the most pathetic company to deal with. Yebo... Gogo

Mal Lemme 11/3/2009 9:23:28 AM
I'm sorry but to me Vodacom is a bunch of daylight robbers. You pay exorbitantly high fees for crap reception and calls that break up or get dropped often. I live in a central Pretoria BTW. What's more their sms and data bundles expire after a month. What's up with that? I paid for it so I am entitled to use it!! They've got too many subscribers on an overloaded network in exchange for exorbitant fees. Period.

motswanagape 11/3/2009 9:24:45 AM
They are like politicians:come election time or contract renewal time they fool u once more.or rather like banks as soon as 50 flabbergasted customers leave for the rival ;there are 50 coming from the rival to them.

Nomsa 11/3/2009 9:35:50 AM
I guess I have been one of the lucky ones, Vodacom have been good to me always.

RIPOFF 11/3/2009 9:42:41 AM
I have had the opportunity to work abroad many times and what always astounds me is the cost of Voice and Data Services in South Africa (not the service) about 500% more than most other countries I have been to.......... The Cellular Networks (and Telkom) are making a fortune off old technology and are not giving anything back, they are bordering on organised crime cartels with all their price fixing and uncompetitive behaviour.

simomo 11/3/2009 9:44:28 AM
I have been doing some travelling lately and Vodacom has been charging exorbitant roaming fees (and for a few calls and sms in Kenya alone, the bill was R1,500) and they went on disconnect both our family lines for exceeding credit limit and service was only restored on payment of R5,000 bill in just 1 month! I now have a seperate contract with MTN and my other contract with Voda is due for renewal and your guess is as good as mine...

I used to pitch for Vodacom when family and friends had to renew their contracts...they are a good company but even they drop the ball every now and again! Yesterday I received a bill for R600 for my 3G which ended in September and I had it converted to prepaid!!! 2 hours of phone calls yesterday got me NOWHERE as they can't "see" my usage because it is prepaid - so my question is : "How can you charge me when its prepaid and if you cant see 'usage'?" I hope they help me resolve this because my confidence in them has been shaken!!!

josi 11/3/2009 9:48:19 AM
i like my vodacom. BUT what can i do about all their spam lately? they've advertising some competition i don't give a flying fig about. is it possible to ask them to stop the spam? i get messages saying 'use your phone more to win money etc' it's annoying beyond belief!!

Mike 11/3/2009 9:57:00 AM
Louis which Vodacom are you talking about, cant be the one in South Africa, they far worse than Telkom

Tsipa 11/3/2009 10:05:38 AM
I've been using MTN for 11yrs and haven't had a problem which they failed to resolve. They resolve all the problems I experince, as long as I report them I'm sure they'll come back to me with a valid answer. I can mention a lot of times I dealt with MTN and they always responded positively. Ayoba MTN Ayoba.

LSA 11/3/2009 10:06:41 AM
There are more important things to worry about than "the network". We need to focus our attention on that proposed 1% increase in tax to fund the SABC(ANC mouthpiece). People, they are finding new ways every second month to steal our money. When will it end???

Chris 11/3/2009 10:06:56 AM
@LSA, totally agree, I have way less problems with Virgin. Normally my vodacom contract with its 120 mins free mins lasted me half a month, but when I went over to Virgin with per second billing, I've not once had to buy extra air time during 2 years now. I see that I've actually got almost 400 mins to carry over now!
I do have a problem with reception in my building but so does everybody else as well.
Go over to Virgin

Tasmee Hylkema 11/3/2009 10:12:13 AM
After making a deposit with a teller at Absa in the Centurion mall, my friend asked if the teller could please make her a copy of the deposit slip. The teller rudely said no, and when asked why, she said,"because it would mean that you paid twice!".......I appreciate good service when I experience it, and always let the person know that they are doing a great job, but the arrogance coupled with the ignorance is truly goign to bring service levels down even further. TH

Alex 11/3/2009 10:17:34 AM
Can we have the number you phoned? I'm glad that complaining helps. But that Vodacom is a prime example of a good operator. PLEASE.

Vodacom + MTN has no real infrastructure cost and do not care to widen their coverage. Instead they have unbelievable marketing budgets to attract even more customers.

I belive in capitalism but then the regulators should let as many players participate as possible that is the only way of driving their prices down.

renie 11/3/2009 10:25:31 AM
I've been with vodacom for the last 7 years and their service really is better than other cellular providers. Let's not even begin to mention Virgin or CellC who though have low costs - service is a shocker.

Linda 11/3/2009 10:26:12 AM
Tasmee. Absa staff have to respect for clients, or maybe I should they are selective. Louis I am happy that we still have people like you who build hope. As soon as all our public department transform themselves to a PTY LTD and view the poor and the working class or the it citizens as queens and Kings. I am sure bad service will be a thing of the past. Thank you Louis for re-building a hope in our hearts.

Jann 11/3/2009 10:27:42 AM
@Noko YA mosebe. Agree with you regarding the free minutes. Why don't we try and get the number of the CEO and we can phone him between these hours. At least that way we'd be making use of them and not bothering other people :>

Fikile 11/3/2009 10:37:49 AM
How is our standard dropping when PAR becomes good service. What vodacom is doing is on PAR is is what I expect and demand, seeing that our rates are about thousand percent above what the Chinese are paying per call

Carel 11/3/2009 10:38:56 AM
Louis, do you work for Vodacom ? I have only experienced unsolved problems with Vodacom ( dropped calls, substandard Black Berry, Data issues and the list goes on ). What upsets me the most is an useless call centre which simply does not solve problems. What ever you do, do not try to get hold of any management. I gave up and cannot wait for my contract to run out. Not many options of where to go after Vodacom !

Proudly South Africa 11/3/2009 10:42:15 AM
@Louis did I read correctly, how can one be impressed after waiting for 18months? I guess it doesn't take much to impress you. One of the reason I changed over from Vodacom to Virgin is because I hate to wait. Virgin is giving far better service than vodacom.

Jan Hofmeyr 11/3/2009 10:49:08 AM
It is because of people like Louis that Big corporations can get away with constantly ripping off consumers. You can fool enough of the people all of the time.

Goose 11/3/2009 10:50:21 AM
I deal with Vodacom business for corporate 3G solutions. When i log a call, on average i get a response after 1 week. My average call takes about 3 weeks and MANY mails/calls to be resolved. If i do not throw my toys, nothing would happen! Their service sucks.....and we give a LOT of business to them.

VC Employee 11/3/2009 11:06:58 AM
Dear readers. Being a vodacom employee I can assure you that customer complaints do make it to the meeting with higher management. Customer complaints is part of the way in which we identify and solve problems. To put up an extra tower is millions of rands, and unfortunately it is just not worth while for a single customer, although you can be promised a lot of effort goes into solving a client's problems.

Paul 11/3/2009 11:09:39 AM
Great to hear mate. Now for exactly the opposite experience give MTN a try!

GATVOL 11/3/2009 11:09:43 AM
I am sorry but here I have to be one of the whingers. Due to the fact that I work offshore, my girlfriend has 3G with Vodacom in order to communicate when I am away. However the area where we stay is the poorest coverage I have ever seen (Northriding JHB) and when complaining to Vodacom for the 100th time , nothing has been done. The one clown even suggested that we move to improve connectivity. SORRY but VodaCON is worse than useless. They may tell you a sweet stories when you phone but in fact they do nothing unless it was already planned by the bosses.

@Carel 11/3/2009 11:09:44 AM
Black Berrys, in the effort to be better than the rest, use shortcuts in the 2G/3G implementations. This in turn means that when a network is configured to support all mobiles equally well the Black Berrys does not play very well together.

seems 11/3/2009 11:35:57 AM
Do not want to comment on issues out of context, but I use GPRS with M-T-N, which provides a maximum downstream speed of 50kbps data, theoretically. When lucky, I get 10-15% of this speed but nominally half of that band. Taking an example, one could potentially surf @~3600/24/60 bit per second to reach the 2000000000 bytes (X8 to bits) to reach the upper limit. This was my initial premise since I have worked with data streaming both at low level and high level languages, but that is not the point here. FYI, the service provider always alerts you that your XYZ MB will expire on date YYY, the latter is the issue, i.e. effective and good service delivery which is customer focussed.

Anon 11/3/2009 3:48:15 PM
Thank God, I have come to end of my contract with Cell C - Their customer service is pathethic. Problem is where do I go now.

Peter 11/4/2009 9:35:25 AM
I have had the worst experience ever with Vodacom and it just keeps getting worse. From billing 10x higher than normal, endless frustrated hours in call centres, no communication between departments and really, really bad quality. of service in connectivity.Remember this is a service you are paying dearly for, amongst the highest in the world.

Piet 11/4/2009 11:28:33 AM
I am with VirginMobile for some time and still absolutely happy, except for the fact that no technical assistance is so readily available in Mosselbay. Here VodaStore in my region absolutely exceeeded my expectations in customer services on several occasions, when I had problems with handsets. Also had my problems some time ago with Cell-C customer services.

Louis 11/5/2009 5:51:03 AM
Just to clarify to those who missed the gist of it: the compliment to Vodacom is not because it took them 18 months to solve the problem - I know too little about their inner workings to comment on that. It was the fact that they kept in contact throughout. Customer service is not all about fast resolution only, but also about keeping the customer informed about progress.

Jo@everyone says... I couldn't personally bear this cermoney, but I think that this is the wrong time in SA to bring it up. The very response has shown that most people don't even understand the objection. So, repeating it over and over again, louder and louder, is just pointless. They don't get it, and it's ok. Reform, progress, change - these are all things that have to come from within any culture/nation/society. Someone who is part of this situation will someday stop and think: "Why are we still doing this, again?"
