Nestle insists milk is safe

Cape Town - Food giant Nestle has removed two of its products, including a vitamin supplement for toddlers, from shelves after a worrying level of the chemical melamine was detected in the batch.

The Department of Health requested that Nestle withdraw Lactogen 1 and Nido 1+ with immediate effect.

Nido 1+ is designed to aid digestion in toddlers. Products with serial code 81790181SO2E1M 900g have been recalled.

Thousands of babies in China fell ill recently after drinking formula containing melamine. At least four died.

Nestle has however emphasised that the products "are absolutely safe for consumption", but said the company is co-operating with the health department in recalling the batch.

"In the absence of any specific South African legislation for melamine in food, that the traces of melamine detected are more than 10 times lower than the WHO guidance level of health concern," Nestle said.

Now I'm seriously paranoid. What's happening?I have a 5 month old beautiful baby and I have just seen a picture of a Zimbawen baby with Cholera, now this...I'm Deeply concerned>>>Are these the last days of which Prophets of old prophesied? Are we nearing the end, Or we still going to see worse things than these?Look at how fast our country is going down the drain,HIV & AIDS is wiping out families, hing unemployment rates, contaminated water, crime,so much hate.

It is not the chinese that are the problem but rather the greedy capitalist corportations who will even stoop to putting melamine into products to make it appear to have more protein... If it is absolutely safe, then why remove it? Why is it in the products in the first place if it has no nutritional value?

JC 11/26/2008 2:23:22 PM
There is a "safe" level of melanine and Nestle's products are below that level? Sorry buddy! I want NO melanine whatsoever. And if your supplier can't deliver, change suppliers, just like I will. My quetion to Nestle is how come it was never detected previously and what steps are being taken to ensure it never happens again. "Sorry" is unfortunately not good enough.

What is so unfortunate about this whole thing is that these big companies are subjecting our children to health simply because of their negligence in pursuit of income. I think more should be made in enforcing corporate accountability ? for many years in the developing countries, particularly in South Africa industry has been enjoying free lunch in relationship to negative health and environmental effects caused by their operations. Something needs to be done as a matter of urgency.

"In the absence of any specific South African legislation for melamine in food" - WTF so lets exploit the loopholes in our swiss cheese legal system. This is like the 5th time in two years Nestle's formula's have had to be withdrawn ??? I will NEVER EVER feed my child anything from Nestle.

pamela Jikelane 11/26/2008 2:39:01 PM
My son is drinking Nido 1+ and i am so scared. What is happening in this world, have we been cursed??? i have no idea what to do and Nestle is a specialist in baby food. Oh my God!!!!

Jason Marshall 11/26/2008 2:45:44 PM
I cannot believe it. How can Nestle sell stuff that contains a substance they should know about in the first place!! It sounds like they putting the blame on china. I will not buy from them if they do not know what they selling!!!

Trevor 11/26/2008 2:46:36 PM
I?m really disappointment with both department of health and the company Nestle itself, the alarm rang two if not three months ago about this and the laborites test was done a months ago finally they recalling the products, this is very bad for the country if the department of health is continuing acting like this and company liable for this must be punished. I?m sick and tired with products from China, this year only how many times this kind of accident happen????.

Poisoned_already 11/26/2008 2:58:04 PM
No wonder the life expectancy of South Africans is so low, at a paltry 40 years. We are melamined to early graves! It's time urban laws are relaxed so we can have our own cattle in the back yard, and have fresh yummy milk from our very own cows.
