'Why hike the price?'

Dear Editor,
I am sitting in my office wondering about Eskom. Recently Eskom was approved to charge 31% more fees to our electricity bill (of course this was highly controversial).
Added to this, in the last two weeks I have experienced three power failures, all in the evening when I come home from work. As I sit here I have a few questions I would like to pose (maybe the readers can answer them?):
1. What contingency plans were set up for the winter season? Was their a decision regarding the increase in electricity usage over the colder months?
2. Considering the above, I imagine that the plan was to display warning messages on the television during high peak viewing hours. But, a) displaying such messages presupposes that everyone is watching TV (which is course not true) and b) presupposes that everyone instantly obeys their call for switching off non-essential appliances.
3. Continuing; since when was a TV considered an essential appliance, over and above a geyser and a stove?
4. Why must we switch off our appliances if we are paying for the electricity? We pay for the electricity and so should have the right to all do our part. Sure, if the electricity were provided for free everyone should listen to the warning messages?
I hope to have some legitimate answers to these questions.
