Wandering hippo shot dead

by
2008-07-15 12:12

Durban - KwaZulu-Natal's wandering hippo Nonkululeko was shot dead on Tuesday morning in Durban, Animal Rights Africa said.

Spokesperson Steve Smit said the animal was shot in Riyadh near Verulam at 03:00, apparently by members of he eThekwini Natural Resources department with the assistance of wildlife officials. Smit told Sapa three shots had been fired.

"We are very sad it ended this way. We believe this tragedy could have been avoided if wildlife officials acted more decisively to save the animal."

He said the animal could have been prevented from leaving the area it was initially spotted in.

"Unfortunately very little conservation value is given to a hippo," said Smith.

The hippo was suspected of killing a Verulam man at the weekend but this had not been confirmed yet. Police earlier said the 60-year-old victim, Ben Dlamini, was found with one wound to the head and facial injuries.

I think it is an awful tragedy that this poor hippo has been shot dead. So much for the competence(or lack of) of the Wildlife authorities. They could have done much more, a lot earlier on, to avoid this. SHAME ON THEM!!!!

Joel 7/15/2008 12:34:07 PM
what excatly do you expect us to say from the death of an animal? hippos are not even endagered

Saddened 7/15/2008 12:40:43 PM
I can't believe that they shot the poor hippo! If we treat innocent animals like this, no wonder the crime rate is so high as people treat other people with the same disrespect they show for the animals. Sies!

brad 7/15/2008 12:46:39 PM
Why did you even read this article then, Joel? We are blessed to live in a country with so much wildlife...its a crying shame when an animal has to die in such a way

andy 7/15/2008 12:47:41 PM
What a disgrace.

Cindy 7/15/2008 12:49:11 PM
i can't believe the hippo is dead..!!! I only saw this story this morning and was so hoping that the powers that be would wait first and investigate the issue and then take action - if the man only had 1 wound in his head and not 2 like suggested that a hippo would do - that is really a shame - why did they have to kill the hippo before getting all their facts straight!! I agree Kevin - shame on them....nothing is going to bring that hippo back - people should think a little more!!!

JAG 7/15/2008 12:51:02 PM
So there are billions of humans, Is it ok to shoot them????

mb 7/15/2008 12:53:51 PM
With you Joel, it is just a hippo, the original owners should have been more responsible, maybe there are families now without a breadwinner due to this hippo, human life is more important in this case, you must learn to make moral jugdement.

Kev 7/15/2008 1:03:09 PM
I think it would be a bigger tradgedy if the hippo killed (or killed again if the first incident proves to be valid). It is easy to talk about letting the hippo be but if it is wondering an area where humans may be endangered its a different story. Hippo wonders into your back yard where your kids are playing are you going to think twice if you have your elephant gun handy? Yes its sad the hippo is dead. Its far sadder that a man lost his life yet noone seems all that concerned.

sam 7/15/2008 1:04:40 PM
i cant see why they could not have moved the hippo to a "safer location". I understand that the hippo is no lightweight- but surely something else could have been done. this is very sad!

Rian 7/15/2008 1:12:02 PM
Joel,I truly hope one of the remainder 999999999 gets hold of you bru! The hippo gets a death penalty for maybe being an eye witness to the guys death, but what about the 1000000000 killers that get bail for murdering our families and friends?? Bring back the death penalty!

Panda 7/15/2008 1:13:15 PM
Disgusting, only in South Africa !!!

Stef 7/15/2008 1:14:03 PM
Your not endangered, how about if you get shot? Is that OK as well?

marian van der walt 7/15/2008 1:15:56 PM
we should mishandle the people that mishandle animals ,children and womaen.

Joy 7/15/2008 1:16:01 PM
Perhaps Joel should wander in the wild too...considering how many millions of people around....who would miss Joel!

Karen 7/15/2008 1:16:04 PM
They let him wander for months and then SHOOT him? An utter disgrace.

NE 7/15/2008 1:18:55 PM
It's not about whether people or animals are more important. The fact is there is no compassion anymore - for people or animals. The way in which a society treats its animals says an awful lot about the society as a whole.

mb 7/15/2008 1:22:14 PM
I have watched a number of documentaries on wildlife and a large number of people are killed by hippos annually in Africa because these beasts tend to be very aggressive and territorial, now somebody comes on national TV and says otherwise, who is an expert and who's mis-informed? No large and dangerous wild animal should be left wondering alone without anyone assuming responsibility for them. These are not foxes or jackals people, come on!!!

nats 7/15/2008 1:34:04 PM
It is the attitude of people like Joel that causes animals to become extinct...Oh why worry there are SOOOO many of them in the wild - why bother it is only a Hippo - well one day there might not be 1000's running around in the wild and it will be because of people like you with that apathetic attitude. Perhaps one day when you are shot we should say that same thing - not to worry, there are 1000's more people and see how you like it -

Sanji 7/15/2008 1:34:55 PM
SO WHEN ONE HIPPO IS KILLED, EVERYONE SAYS AG SHAME AND EVERYONE IS VERY SYMPATHETIC . WHAT ABOUT THE SENSELESS SLAUGHTER OF CATTLE, SHEEP AND CHICKENS? JUST BECAUSE PEOPLE EAT THEM DOES NOT MAKE IT RIGHT. NOBODY CARE ABOUT THAT SLAUGHTER. I BET ALMOST EVERYONE FEELING SORRY FOR THE HIPPO, EATS MEAT. GET YOUR PRIORITIES RIGHT. ALL LIFE IS SACRED. STOP EATING ANIMALS

Kevan 7/15/2008 1:38:01 PM
Guess the Wildlife Conservation Crew in SA is even more slack than the Government.

MM 7/15/2008 1:38:38 PM
Think of what the hippo would have done if they didn't shoot it.The poor man who have injuries in his head. His children are cying everyday. Is just a hippo not a human.

Asi 7/15/2008 1:45:33 PM
I bet if the guy dead was your Dad, Brother, husband etc, all of you would have killed the hippo by yourselves.

Helen 7/15/2008 1:51:21 PM
It boils down to just one factor and that is : Kill, Kill, Kill, people, animals, everything that moves or comes in the way. The man who pulled the triggar on this much loved animal should be stripped naked, and crucified on the cross in a public square - Now shooter don't forget there isa LEOPARD out there eating goats, are you going to shoot this beautiful animal also. So sad and digusted once more at the evil action of some 'good for nothing' so-called not fit for society thug...

Helen 7/15/2008 1:53:41 PM
Absolutely disgusting actions from somebody with the mentality of a GOLF BALL. YOU WICKED CREATURE.

Helen 7/15/2008 1:55:24 PM
Just another act of killing in this country. Why, Why, Why????

Bronwyn 7/15/2008 2:01:30 PM
It was so unecessary to shoot this animal! There is no reason at all why he could not have been sedated and moved to another location. Every animal is entitled to life, this was not necessary and to say the least, disgraceful!

Helen 7/15/2008 2:01:31 PM
This beautiful animal had a name and was much loved by many people nationwide - Wildlife Society this unbelievable act is shameful!!!

Stef 7/15/2008 2:03:12 PM
Why didn't they just tranquilize the Hippo and transport it to a more appropriate location...just a thought for next time

Helen 7/15/2008 2:05:03 PM
Ok so I am not allowed to voice my opinion, all I can say is shame on you for killing this great beast!!

Animal Lover 7/15/2008 2:31:00 PM
I read these comments and feel sick the way South Africans think....you live in a beautiful country with all these animals and the thoughts are "there are plenty of them" This Hippo should of been moved to another area and not killed what right do we have. Quick to kill wild animals but not so quick to jail and bring back the death penelty to the sick men walking around killing people....

Nic the Greek 7/15/2008 2:36:34 PM
For those of you that don?t have a clue. No. 1 the hippo was not shot to kill it maliciously; it was shot out of a logistical point of view. The problem is containing a hippo of that size in a confined space. The costs of such an exercise are astronomical. OK, next point, darting the animal and transporting it somewhere else is also not an option. Hippo's being the water creatures they are, will easily head for the water went darted and loss of consciousness could lead to drowning. Besides, this hippo would probably be killed if it were to be relocated, by the existing family unit in the new area, for being an outsider. While the loss of an wild animal is regrettable the problem lies more deeply. Especially with the people who go ag shame and then drive to the new mall that was probably built on the hippo?s old habitat. Hypothetical case but speaks volumes!
