Things could be worse...

Whooaaaa! "It's a freak show out there," I thought to myself, reading the newspaper headlines from pole-to-pole. "Blah-blah-blah" this. "Blah-blah-blah" that and, somewhere in between, a rather pretty sunrise.

I could easily join the chorus of groans and moans this morning, Lord knows I am very good at it. Even my detractors must admit that there are few who take such lustful joy out of hammering nails into the socially, mentally and politically inept. And today is no different...

Just kidding.

Today I will refrain from socking it to the ANCYL leader, Julius Malema - even though he thinks there's nothing wrong for the ruling party to be led by a jailbird, should the Reverend Zuma not pass "go", not collect any bucks and head off to the big house. Aikôna comrades - that's just too easy and rather beneath anyone with half-a-brain.

So, you ask, if we are not going to bitch about something - the awful state of the roads, the lack of service delivery, the litter lining our sidewalks, crime, corruption, cronyism, cynicism, exiting Western Cape premiers, threats to our courts, constitution and so-called law and order - what else is there?

Allow me to direct your attention to Northern Africa where rampant penis theft and witchcraft-induced-shrinking is the order of the day. Apparently the poor souls in Congo have been losing inches at an alarming rate and, sometimes, the whole organ would go to that big porn movie in the sky.

Body shots

Reportedly "penis snatching" is not uncommon in West Africa. Witchcraft and ritual killings for body parts - you know?

Bummer.

I know I, for one, would be really upset should I wake up one day to find my best friend had gone the way of the Dodo - in its place an attempted IOU sign, "UIO... Gud bliss".

I imagine that a life without the only free entertainment on offer would be too much to bear and will you find me ending it all by braaiing fatty chops every night and drinking gallons of Jack Daniels.

Yeah - at least the penalty for penis snatching is severe on the daft continent. Twelve suspected or, as we like to say, "alleged", penis snatchers were beaten to death by an angry mob in Ghana only ten years ago. To avoid similar bloodshed police have now arrested the alleged sorcerers and their victims to check out the story for themselves - with magnifying glasses if they have to.

Thank goodness for one unconvinced Kinshasha police chief. "How do you know it's gone if you haven't tried it at home?" he asks, and rightly so. How do you?

And how do you, citizens of South Africa, know that today is not going to be brilliant day? At the very least we should all be comforted by the fact that most of us will wake up intact tomorrow morning - which would be cause for wild celebration.

Tomorrow is National Penis Appreciation Day (NATPAD)... make it count!

You are seriously crazy! Confirmed!

Dave Robbins 7/24/2008 11:24:02 AM
Brandon, you go to great lengths to bring us the long and the short of it but, beware, people could say that this was all a load of balls. What a 'waist' of a good opportunity to prove a point; there was just no cut and thrust to it! :)

Rodders 7/24/2008 11:25:56 AM
Nice one Brandon, although I must admit that from my point of view, every day is a penis appreciation day!!! And as for the idea of penis-snatching? that's just downright frightening, although a couple of hundred gentle tugs is not too bad... ;-)

cvz 7/24/2008 11:29:55 AM
Brandon, this was really funny, but i feel that SA could do with a lot less pri**s in every sphere. Though Jack Daniels should be enjoyed regardless of weather you have free entertainment or not.

mac 7/24/2008 11:33:35 AM
Well said Rodders. Crouch, touch, pause, engage.

Badger 7/24/2008 11:33:42 AM
..."..ALL RISE.." and raise a glass to Brandon. Thanks You !!!

padkos 7/24/2008 11:35:09 AM
I think a NATPAD day is a great idea, we already know most divorced woman already have a day, called BOBBIT Day. I also think that NATPAD day must be very hands on day.

kwk 7/24/2008 11:43:35 AM
Indeed we are better off than the DRC (whose capital is Kinshasa, and which borders another country which normally goes by the name "Congo"). Thanks then, Brandon, for pointing out that we are better of than Congo (and/or?) the DRC. That makes me feel a lot better.

Stryker 7/24/2008 11:45:16 AM
After reading the headlines relating to how an ex cop was asaulted and almost raped in a cell over the weekend your article was much needed relief. Whats with SA men and their penises - perhaps a bout of penis snatching should break out in SA. South African males seem to want to rape everything even other men - I mean whats that about? Is it a cultural thing?

tshepo 7/24/2008 11:50:08 AM
your right, i for one never get Brandon's posts but a lot do. So enjoy.

Bra Darkie 7/24/2008 11:51:47 AM
I can't help notice that this Brandon fellow gets given quite a lot of space on this website to constantly ridicule and poke fun at our beloved continent. Some of us are getting tired of seeing your smug, fat face on this website everytime we're looking for something interesting to read and debate. Give us a break Chris Roper, please.

Shabir ... the shake master 7/24/2008 11:52:32 AM
My Brotha!!! Thanx for a nice piece, thoroughly enjoyed it! Really made my day, especially after reading JM's comments on Zuma leading from Jail ... I agree, he can lead the ANC from Jail if they want BUT not South Africa ...

Liv2C 7/24/2008 12:00:23 PM
Brilliantly funny! I will celebrate, even though i'm a woman! Good humour on a beautiful day. Cheers!

Sello 7/24/2008 12:01:47 PM
You are really making fun of Africa, aren't you? I see that you are enjoying this. A lot of good is happening in this continent as well, but anyway I dont expect you to know since your only experience of Africa is through BBC NEWS, SKY NEWS and CNN, who just come here to dig only the bad stories and feed the world. I live in a rural village and have been to Africa a lot. Very nice people out there in Malawi and Senegal. We were discussing this with my wife around the woodfire last night.

Badger 7/24/2008 12:02:08 PM
..."tired of seeing your smug, Fat Face"...why don't you go and "BURN" something ? and leave us in peace to enjoy a bit of humour once in a while.

proud to be white 7/24/2008 12:03:48 PM
Get over yourself dude, there are some of us who actually enjoy he's writing,so if you don't like it don't read it

Manowar 7/24/2008 12:06:16 PM
Lighten up man! the piece (no pun intended;) was supposed to be funny and bring a bit of much needed laughter. Dont look so hard to find something that might insult you, I'm sure it's very tiresome.

Frank II 7/24/2008 12:08:31 PM
"most of us will wake up intact tomorrow morning - which would be cause for wild celebration." Actually, with 50 murders a day and one women raped every minute, we do not have any reason to celebrate! How many people visiting news24 today will themselves fall victim in the coming year? Problems don't go away by themselves. Civil society needs to wake up and stand up against crime, corruption, etc. We don't want to see how bad things can become before we do something about it...

Brandon Faber 7/24/2008 12:13:50 PM
Afternoon lads. Let's not make it political or whatever, I'm just poking a bit of fun at what is a funny thing. If they were chopping of members in the USA I would make fun of them too. As for my unique physique - well, I prefer the phrase "festively plump" instead of "fat". Cheerio mateys and, remember, we can pull the ass out of anything, even if it is African.

LH 7/24/2008 12:14:56 PM
Good one BB - Enjoyed it.

Maanda 7/24/2008 12:25:25 PM
BRANDON what is this now, they must just close this article without delay, and let's discus something interesting. Was this the only article they could publish?

GS 7/24/2008 12:27:25 PM
And that about sums it up. Sitting around the fire in a village. Nobody has to listen or watch BBC or CNN to see that Africa is a basket case. Its there for all to see in broad daylight. I suppose the "penis snatching" is all about culture too!

Stryker 7/24/2008 12:29:03 PM
Bra Darkie and Sello for goodness sakes go steal yourselves a sense of humour and have a chuckle at the beloved continent once in a while. Just a frikken light hearted piece of fun for goodness sakes. After all beats the hell out of reading about Bob and his stupid ass hitler mustache or mobs setting fire to buildings or raping people in prison cells. Perhaps you prefer these debates, after all they dont make Africa look bad just normal yeah?

Karen 7/24/2008 12:44:18 PM
What on earth is wrong with laughing at ourselves? Are we soooo insecure that we have to get defensive about everything all the time. We are funny a funny bunch lets face it - why can't we have a bit of fun with it. Yes there is always something serious going on and there is always somebody worse off than you. You people cry all the time about what happened in the past - get over it!!! People have been treated way worse than you could ever dream of. Lets stop the laughter and discuss that..

carol 7/24/2008 12:51:29 PM
I just love your humour, Brandon. And those who critise, just build a bridge. All we want is have a little humour to se us through the day, and you certainly give it to us. You carry on, love ya!

BruceC 7/24/2008 12:54:16 PM
Please don?t make uninformed statements that are generalizations. No one ever said people from Africa aren?t good people ..or nice Also I watch CNN,Sky,BBC World and AL-Jazeera.They have many documentaries that show positive stories about Africa like Eye on Africa ...maybe watch these News Shows before commenting ?

CC 7/24/2008 12:57:35 PM
Agree, lighten up everyone - stupid article but fun anyway - men are so obsessed with their privates ! Sello - do you really live in a rural village and sit around a fire ??

marius 7/24/2008 1:00:31 PM
answered a quiestion that I have had for a long time...why do so many african men suffer from "kleinman sindroom"

VG 7/24/2008 1:11:56 PM
boy, you had me in stitches..tears streaming down my face. The only Q is (besides whats happened to JQ)how did your comment slip past the (in)famous News24 Censorship board??

Rian 7/24/2008 1:21:42 PM
Brandon, don't joke about loosing inches the thought of having to go through life with only 18 inches is frightning ;)

mo 7/24/2008 1:42:32 PM
Hey Brandon...Great read, always love your writing. Bra darkie and co. it takes a certain level of intellect to recognise a talent for writing (whcih BF has in abundance) as well as seeing something for what it is meant to be. A level i fear you guys will never reach. This was a funny article and very well written and if you cant see that, then, well, shame.
