'We should be concerned...'

by Trevor Gothan
2009-11-03 11:02

We should be concerned - 40% of our citizens live in grinding poverty. They are unemployed, or unemployable, due to lack of jobs or skills appropriate to our economy. Education is long term, so job creation is an immediate priority. The government says it is trying, but recession doesn't help. What are the realities?

A growing economy provides more jobs, albeit restricted by skills shortages, crime hurting investment, etc, all topics hotly debated. However, the critical basis for a strong economy is a free and competitive market, which is rarely mentioned.

Is our market free enough? Is it one "without economic intervention and regulation by government except... against force or fraud" which "requires protection of property rights, but no regulation, no subsidization, no single monetary system, and no governmental monopolies." (Wikipedia)

Prosperity relies on free choices citizens make in the market, communicating their values to employers, suppliers and producers, who (if competitive) will quickly take action to cut costs, improve efficiency or redirect their resources to other, more profitable applications.

This "feedback" is continuous, automatic, instant, cheap and immensely more accurate than the occasional, biased, directives from expensive centralised economy bureaucrats.

The South African market has never really been free in so many areas. Price fixing is rampant, punishable at worst by a tap on the wrist after a few years. The only real competition is from imports. The greatest collusion of all, however, is in the labour market by monopolistic unions, fully supported and unpunished by government.

The laws of supply and demand are simple. When wages for any category of labour are increased by union blackmail, or government legislation, the supply of job seekers will rise and the available jobs will dwindle, increasing unemployment.

Some companies will close, others will find it more profitable to mechanise or outsource manufacture to China, or change to less labour intensive businesses - the opposite of what we need right now.

Cosatu, one of the culprits, also states that labour broking is unconstitutional. Our constitution gives workers the individual right to unionise, picket, etc but it is their right. They are free to join Cosatu or not unionise at all.

Imposing unionisation will certainly infringe that constitutional right. Pity is, when many of these people, who work through brokers, end up unemployed, neither Cosatu, nor the constitution will give them a second thought.

Cosatu also wants "decent" wages (whatever that may mean), for their "club"; not for the unemployed, unpaid charity volunteers, etc. Apparently their members had no idea what a decent wage was when they took the job! Are these actions, which increase unemployment, pure madness or is it a plan?

Francis Daniels, writing from Nigeria, suspects the latter. Please Google his blog "Frankly Speaking: The return of apartheid" published November 1 2009 and see what you think.

Well said and all very obvious to anyone with a brain, sadly the powers that be do not seem to have the slightest idea on how an economy works. I vuess they will work it out when the country and all its citizens are bust, but maybe they will blame one of their favourite scapegoats, apatheid, evil west, third force etc etc.

Didnt JZ PROMISE 500000 by Dec 31st?

Glock 22 11/3/2009 11:20:59 AM
Very tough times ahead that is all I know. I am spending my next year on getting as manye certiffacations behind my names as possible. You know Incase I have to get out of here ... I dont see the anc looking out for us but only for themselves

Cynical 11/3/2009 11:21:49 AM
I don't give a damn whether 40% are unemployed or unemployable because the majority of them will continue to vote for a party that will screw them over and over again - which means that they are not only unemployed/unemployable but also bloody stupid too. It's funny how many people there are who continue to think that the situation will improve despite damning evidence, on an almost daily basis, of just how deep in the sh*t the country is.

Juan - Dont worry 11/3/2009 11:26:44 AM
Zuma promised 500 000new jobs before end of december! His genius st 3 education won't fail us! The majority of voters believe in him, remember!!!

What ever! Super boring article

Actually... 11/3/2009 11:38:45 AM
Actually SA's unemployment is around 24%. People living with less than $2 is around 43%, you are right on that one.

BladeRunner 11/3/2009 11:46:22 AM
Cosatu will be the death of us, make no mistake. @Hans: um, its an article, not entertainment! Try watching cartoons maybe?

I spent the last year working in Europe. The depression has hit Europe and the world severely. Chances of getting a job overseas is slim these days even if you have all the qualifications in the world. Furthermore, America and Europe don't even disguise the fact that they want to employ only Europeans or Americans and no-one else. Running away isn't going to solve your problems. There is no better place than SA and the only way in the end will be to fight for what you want. That means organizing and striking back. However, the ANC has mastered the art of dividing and conquering. It seems to me every whitey in this land is destined for a shack if he/she manages to stay alive in the next five year. The only reason why massive urban unrest has not surfaced earlier was because of the relatively buoyant economy since 1995. Now that the depression is setting in there is a VERY high likelihood of huge urban unrest. Strap yourselves in for a very wild ride. lastly, 14% of the population CANNOT carry the rest of the nation. It has no other option but to collapse. If I was a tax payer and white I'd start to organize my resources now before it is too late.

Bobby 11/3/2009 11:55:17 AM
With the increase in electricity prices, the aluminium smelters will close, most mining companies will close and then we will have 80% unemployed. What will happen then? You will have plenty of electricity but what would you do with it?Which foreign company would want to invest here?I am no expert with the economy but I know that we will be no better than what the rest of the Africa is.Eventually gold will be very expensive but the mines that produce it will be closed.

"I am very happy that the youth here decided to align their community projects to government's five key priorities - rural development, education, health, creation of decent jobs and fight against crime," JZ said.
Rural development – The ANC in Gauteng on Thursday urged protesting Diepsloot residents to exercise patience and tolerance as government was trying to find appropriate solutions to their problems.

Education – Incompetence or neglect of duty was one of the contributing factors in the late release of matric results, the education department said on Monday
Health – Until recently the ANC said it wanted to introduce the NHI as soon as possible, but the medium-term budget framework has not allocated funds for it for the next three years. Minister of Finance Pravin Gordhan said emphasis would first fall on fixing the state's health service.
Creation of decent jobs – Job losses could exceed the one million mark for 2009 by the fourth quarter of the year, trade union Solidarity said on Thursday

Crime – Two off-duty Pretoria policemen have been arrested for allegedly shooting dead a street vendor after refusing to pay him.

I rest my case!

Dries 11/3/2009 11:55:53 AM
I expect Zuma to create 500000 jobs he promissed by year end or resign.

Dave 11/3/2009 12:01:59 PM
Free markets = Jobs. Its economics 101.
The more you fight against this concept the more it will kick you. Good article.

Fred Basset 11/3/2009 12:03:04 PM
Something which is quite apparent if you travel around Africa, but the gov does not seem to realise : By encouraging informal trade, you reduce the unemployment rate, but end up with a state that relies on foreign revenue for all of it's services & infrastructure because they are no longer collecting tax from their people. With no money in the coffer, the infrastructure falls apart, and the only option is to mortgage your country back to the foreigners to fix it. Gov has to realise that they must take from all people in order to give to all people or we are sat on a time bomb!

Tumelo 11/3/2009 12:05:17 PM
Your concerns are based on fiction. The unemployment rate is not 40% unless you reserve a devine right to baloon stats. Zuma never promised 500000 jobs and Yes every South African enjoys individual freedoms to pursue whatever legal endevour he/she wishes to. You people are just blowing things out of proportion, I wonder what are your interests.

Halfwise 11/3/2009 12:06:51 PM
The question is… why are these people uneducated… and the answer is… the injustice gov denied them an opportunity not JZ.

mark 11/3/2009 12:10:58 PM
While I agree with some of your comments regarding labor brokering and unions your economic arguments are flawed.
Setting minimum wages does restrict the efficient market by creating unnaturally high demand for jobs that firms are unwilling to give at those rates. If the supply of job seekers for a given wage increases that does not mean that there will be higher un-employment as those job seekers do not magically appear as demand for a certain job sector increases.
There is no such thing as a purely free market, nor is there a command market (communist). There are varying degrees of each in different economies.
Your letter makes good points but ruins them with your flawed economic arguments which also prove that you cannot learn and talk about economics from reading Wikipedia for half an hour. I suggest you stick to what you know in the future, this may drastically decreases the size of your articles though.

Soapbox 11/3/2009 12:11:19 PM

Unfortunately intimidation and threats takes that freedom away. If you don't join the union your house will be burned down while you are sleeping.

@Tumelo 11/3/2009 12:11:51 PM
You seem to uphold your leaders instead of yourself. Your leaders will be the downfall of this country and the demise of all it's citizens. I heartily congratulate you for voting the ANC at least if I get screwed by this government I do not have to admit to being a doos who voted for them.

SimonP@Tumelo 11/3/2009 12:13:31 PM

Halftwat the anc had 15 years in 15 years one can obtain two doctoral degree's. BUT no your anc will rather steal that money. The billions they cannot account for could have built many schools but you choose to deny that fact as always.Fools like you need to suffer and suffer you will thanks to your anc. Watch this space I give it 5 years time then there will be 200 beggers at each robot. That is if there are still robots left that time. Africans doesnt know what the word maintain means. Glock

Point Blank@halfwise 11/3/2009 12:40:42 PM
Um that is no longer an excuse halfwise, if anything black people in this country now have better opportunities, in theroy, then white people. If black people remain largely uneducated in this day and age surely then the blame should be placed at the door of the ANC? After all they have been in power for going on 16 years? I'm not saying it's JZ fault at all but I do think that the rampant corruption we see daily from rural local government and the sheer lack of willingness from these areas to develop education including infrastructure. There are still schools in rural areas that are falling apart, burnt down and even non existent - surely after 15 years of ANC rule these should have been addressed as a matter of urgency?

@Cynical 11/3/2009 12:51:47 PM
Are you not the dude that is emigrating?

gbes 11/3/2009 12:58:21 PM
Jobs are created by educated people.Govt facilitates job creation through supplying the infrastructure in which business people can prosper. To be educated our peope need proper schooling. This system failed us,when pupils at grade 5 level struggle to read / write and do sums as my grandfather used to say.Politicians normally exaggerate to get votes,so be realistic.Educated folks normally doubts a politicians promises, until he delivers. So if you are not educated, you will expect more of govt as my forefathers did.The poor mob are more believing, until they riot and burn when the scales fall of their eyes.To increase job opportunities,we need to skill our people faster.PS: a union is a good thing within certain parameters.

Deon 11/3/2009 12:59:51 PM
Halfwise. Scary thing is that our education is better than the rest of Africa. Who they going to blame? also read an article written by a Nigerian politician begging white people to come back.Classic.

Franky 4 Fingers 11/3/2009 1:02:54 PM
Too true. My old man has finally given up being nice. He is a farmer and has just replaced 60 workers with 1 machine. The blame can be placed squarely on the shoulders of the unions for pushing too hard. It's a fine balancing act cause i believe there is a place for unions.

James@Halfwit 11/3/2009 1:03:11 PM
A basic school education should take less than 15 years. In your case, it would take longer, but the ANC should have educated a lot more people by now. If education had been implemented in a way that worked (not the ANC way), there could have been a lot more people adding to the knowledge economy by now, thereby creating jobs. The only way out of this mess is through education, and it has been abandoned, because it is easy to lie to the uneducated.

Not a denialist just want to move on. Answer 1 simple question. Why do you think SA is so far ahead of the rest of Africa?

@ Tumelo 11/3/2009 1:08:40 PM
Now I know why the ANC can make empty promises and get away with it... Because their supporters don't even bother to listen to them. Let me quote directly from Jacob Zuma's state of the nation address: "Between now and December 2009, we plan to create about 500 000 job opportunities."

Ok, now let's test your knowledge in the new Outcomes Based Education system. Based on the information given, what did Jacob Zuma say?

Tumelo 11/3/2009 1:09:30 PM
Zuma promised 500000 fixed job opportunities out of the Goverment Public Works Investment. Capital frezzed those oportunities because of the economic downturn, thereby closing these opportunities and denying 500000 such opportunities. To prove that we are a free markert economy, we did not interfere with markets works.

oral 11/3/2009 1:11:31 PM
It is a very sad state this unemployement rate, my suggestions are as follows:

1. open up the market ... Electricity, Telecommunications, not everything needs to be controlled by the government!
2. Education is key, billions of rands need to be spent on teachers and schools, not fancy cars for the politicians or arms and name changes!
3. Fight crime, cant stress how importatnt this is, business owners are getting killed daily which leaves people unemployed and the cycle continues. Foreign investment and tourism also suffers becuase of this!
4. Corruption not great

Get these 4things at least moving into the right direction and should be a change in 10years or so. And please people stop blaming Apartheid and anyting else that is not Pro ANC this is just an excuse for lack of accountability and/or uneducated people in government that dont know how to fix the above!

Tumelo, those statements were made when the economic downturn had already started overseas so it should have been no surprise at all that it reached us as well, despite these warning signs the statements were still made.

It was a case of electionering and nothing else, just like all of the othe statements that were made, we will tackle crime, give houses, provide healthcare, teaching etc.

I do hope one day you will realise how your party continues to thrive on your vote, as the economic downturn affects jobs but not government expenditure, cars, hotels, parties... where is the economic downturn in those?

SimonP@Zizo 11/3/2009 1:23:36 PM
"Never argue with people like Juan and SimonP" why is that? Is it because you know you are wrong?
"This forum is full of denialist and hypocrites" Tumelo stated Zuma never said he would create 500000 jobs, are you denying that as well? Thats makes YOU a denialist.
Just answer the simple question: Did Zuma promise 500000 jobs by Dec 2009? Yes or No.

Ds 11/3/2009 1:26:06 PM
Zuma said in his state of the nation speech in June that 500000 jobs would be created by the end of the year as a result of the extended public works. FACT. Sad reality is 500000 jobs have been lost since his state of the nation speech. FACT. Add the loss and promise on new opportunities, that's now a million jobs to be created. It seems to be a familiar status-quo of non-delivery in every aspect of Government. Give the ANC another 2 terms and a decent opposition, the people will see them for what they have done in their time - creation of a new middle class whilst dismissing the peasants! The ANC has learnt very well from the Nats (NP) and making the same fatal flaws all over again. Same regime, different faces.

Spiderman @ Tomato 11/3/2009 1:27:41 PM

If any of you are still listening to him, and not seeing what is actually going on around you, then you are in denial, big time.
The ANC are transforming - nice word that, isn't it - the country into a socialistic banana republic in an effort to save their asses. They know they cannot deliver what they have promised so they will save themselves first & formost.

Russell 11/3/2009 2:16:33 PM
You cannot legistlate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The goverment cannot give to anybody anything that the goverment does not first take from somebody else. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. Lets look at how India China and Brazil are pulling themselves out of poverty. Its certainly not through a market with increased goverment intervention. Cosatu is making everyone poorer in this country even those that thay profess to be supporting.

Juan 11/3/2009 2:23:48 PM
I haven't been around for the past 300 years, so I can't take ANY responsibility for past governments. I CAN point out that THIS government invests more in luxury cars and parties and jets, etc than in job creation. THUS people who voted for THIS CURRENT GOVERNMENT are to blame.

michael 11/3/2009 2:35:09 PM
If COSATU just brough a LITTLE more balance to their extreme Left Wing attitude I think we would see more people being employed. When the pendulum swings too far Left or Right it can only be bad. COSATU doesn't know what the word means and they are 85% to blame for the rising unemployment rate!!!!

FOTA 11/3/2009 2:48:58 PM
No, NO, NO!!!!. This is simply incorrect. The BEST course of action is to nationalise EVERYTHING, including private wealth, like NUMSA wish to do. Take away EVERYTHING that private people have and divide it up. Eliminate poverty and EVERYTHING in one fell swoop. How could it not work, other than the fact that everyone with ambition and a brain would immediately leave.

AA 11/3/2009 2:49:09 PM
All the non-ANC voters knew this, they knew that the ANC would never create jobs, only destroy them. Every day we hear how they blow money but we never hear of any success because there is none. It is time for the ANC regime to step down or be destroyed. Their freedom charter was the sign to this decay, very few ever looked at it and realized this. It was never sustainable yet they want it enforced. Alas, it is the ANC voting masses that are mostly living in shacks and unemployed, go figure.

Mtima 11/3/2009 2:58:46 PM
Its actually very difficult to argue with the likes of Tumalo and halfwise since they refuse to face reality and they seem to think they are always right, simple truth is even Trevor Manuel denied recession at some stage and Zuma probably follow that comment since he is not that educated so he rely heavily on other ppls argument,

Karen @ AA 11/3/2009 3:30:51 PM
Exactly, these people are so gullible and are so easily manipulated and the ANC takes full advantage of this and fills their heads with all kinds of lies. I still believe that people should only be allowed to vote if they have a tax number which SARS can verify and confirm whether returns are up to date. Only then should a person be allowed to vote. Why should people who have nothing to lose and contribute nothing to the country, be given the right to decide on the future of a country? Votes must be taken seriously and the options and ramafications weighed and a considered decision taken. Not just, give me a t-shirt and a hot meal and I'll give you my vote. If you say we were here first then it is so - no proof needed, even though you lie to me all the time, I still believe everything you say.

@michael 11/3/2009 3:41:04 PM
Correct I make a point of not employing any cosatu members. I cant afford them poisoning my current staff as well.

Excalibur 11/3/2009 4:03:00 PM
There are some seriously incorrect assumptions, such as "When wages for any category of labour are increased by union blackmail, or government legislation, the supply of job seekers will rise and the available jobs will dwindle, increasing unemployment". Increasing wages does not decrease available jobs because it increases the number of job seakers. Artificailly increasing wages makes companies less competitive, lowering sales and income, leading to local job losses. One of the MAJOR stumbling blocks to creating jobs in SA is the Labour Legislation which makes it nearly impossible to get rid of staff. This means that people like me just work more, mechanise, or outsource overseas rather than hire locally. If I could take on seasonal labour, then I would but the law does not allow me to. We need labour mobility not labour protection. And the notion that Government can creat jobs is just plain BOLLOCKS. They can help create an environment that allows job creation but nothing more. They are failing miserably at that.

The Cloaked man 11/3/2009 4:17:16 PM
It is like this, if you keep the masses uneducated you can bullsh1t them. You do this by means of promising the world as long as you vote for us. Trouble is when the uneducated masses don't get what they were promised they have a tendency to take it. The government knows this and will simply send the masses down any street as long as its away from them! so my friends depending on what side of the wealth barrier your on will define what your life will be for the next couple of years. The goverment will send the masses to the previously advantaged and currently advantaged doors to save themselves then all hell will break loose. The current Government does not care about this as they will still be in power reaping the rewards while the rest of the people will be fighting it out. Why oh why can't people see this government just isn't working? its not a black or white thing its whether the government works or not and this one doesn't! so we need one that does otherwise we can all pack our bags coz there is not going to be anything left here for anyone!

Perhaps if ALL employers refused to employ any COSATU members or affiliates they might get the message. After all if everyone adheres to this it would be difficult to prosecute ALL of those employers??

Dave 11/3/2009 11:17:52 PM
"pure madness or is it a plan?"
Well if the plan is to redistribute wealth through tax, corruption, fraud and embezzlement.. create an emigration of skills that will open up opportunities for new academic, social and business leaders.. cause an economic collapse that will open opportunities for investment by the masses.. SO FAR ITS WORKING, but theres still a few years to go!

Questions to all you white people
Most of you complain that the mass uneducated idiots votes for the ANC and that is the major problem with South Africa. I ask you these questions: Why did you vote for the NP to stay in power? Yet you were educated geniuses and you still voted for a racist government. Why did you not stand up and be counted? Why did it take you decades to make a change? The reason is that you were living in relative luxury and did not see a reason to change this, even though you knew what was happening to your fellow South Africans. What makes you different to this unpleasant ANC government?

Eles 11/4/2009 7:55:44 AM
The unions and anc youth league who call upon everything to be nationalised (large in part for their own greed and inability to understand economics and consequences) are clearly wrong - I say PRIVATISE - privatise it all. Our government have proven incompetent at most things so I say privatise the hospitals, SAA, SABC, ESKOM, Transnet, post office, hell privatise municipalities if you could and wow the difference within a few short years would be tops and this country would be phenomenal. Step back and let people who actually want to do the job properly step forward. PS does anyone else feel dejavu with Selebi and Agliotti versus JZ and Shaik?

Ryan 11/4/2009 7:59:36 AM
Isn't it just amazing when you say you were'nt around 300 years ago and will not take responsibility but in previous posts remind everyone that the your forefathers that created the roads, infrastructure, etc. It is amazing how our fellow commentors alway comment about not living in the past but reminds everyone constantly about what they have done for the country and if it wasn't for them SA would be "doomed" ... Hypocrites. IF we are going to take credit for that then we might as well take responsiblity as well. Grow up !!!

Janine 11/4/2009 8:25:08 AM
@to all the white people

You must be confusing most of us with our grandparents!! My parents NEVER voted for NP! In fact, they supported IFP!!! So, put your racist card in your pipe and smoke it!!! Cheers!!!!

Anapple 11/4/2009 9:34:08 AM
@To all the white people.
I think you just answered your own question but the "relative luxury" that you mention was the "luxury" of feeling SAFE in our own homes, walking in our neighbourhoods, taking our children to school! Knowing we could rely on the government to spend our tax money on us! The jobs our parents had were not all high paying jobs and some of them were never home because of trying to make extra money by working over time. Not everyone automatically went to university, only a few that could afford it but whatever we were doing to live our daily lives was done safely with the knowledge that we would live to the next payday to pay our bills for the services we were receiving and to hopefully have a little left over for a few luxuries! Is your ANC providing a normal daily life to the majority of South Africans or is it just reducing the lives of those that were considered 'normal' to a living hell where nothing is normal anymore?? Please try and turn YOUR future around so that you are also able to have the kind of life that you say the whites had under the NP government! The ANC is FAILING YOU!

@To all white people 11/4/2009 10:24:56 AM
I think you will find that a huge percetage of people who voted for the NP is dead now. The poeple voting for incompetence now are very much alive. Also the NP made sure SA was safe. Now the anc doesnt care who gets murdered and raped. They all have 40 body gaurds. If I have to choose between apartheid and being safe. Or No apartheid and lawlesness. Well I think you know what I will vote. .... Glock

STEEL TOE CAP 11/4/2009 10:45:39 AM
I am a pensioner, retired and recieving a mine pension. Soon I will be out in the job market looking for part time type of job that totally underpays even though I am a highly skilled artisan. The reason for being underpaid is over the years I have paid a fortune in tax and recieve almost nothing in return. If that is shooting oneself in the foot then that is what the steel toe cap is meant for.

Point Blank@Ryan 11/4/2009 11:24:00 AM
Who you refering to Ryan, you seem to be talking to someone and no one at the same time? I truly hope you not generalising. And To All White People, my parents NEVER voted NP in fact my grandfather was a member of the Progressive Party under Helen Suzman, our family have a long history of anti-apartheid activism right up until my father who was jailed several times for refusing to obey apartheid laws when taking his black friends onto Durban beaches.

ZION@ALL WHITE PEOPLE 11/4/2009 1:21:31 PM
You are right. In 1968 I voted for the NP in a by election because I was told to do so. or else. Being 18 the "or else" indicated terrible repercussions and I was a coward.
That was the last time but the point is that I learnt from that experience. Millions in this country will not even look to learn.

michael 11/4/2009 3:07:53 PM
@all white people - Do two wrongs = one right???

KickerK 11/10/2009 7:55:22 AM
Still on the black/white issues. Still being deceived. Still being divided. In that case you deserve to suffer.
For those who can see pass colour boundries, you are the ones that will build this country.
