Obama's Prize: Have your say

by MyNews24 Editor
2009-10-09 11:31

Cape Town - United States President Barack Obama has been awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples," the Norwegian Nobel Committee said.

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee said.

Zimbabwe's Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, Colombian senator Piedad Cordoba and Chinese dissident Hu Jia were among the favourites to win the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize, Norwegian national broadcaster NRK reported on Friday.

A record 205 nominations were received this year.

Do you think Obama deserves the prize or do you think one of the other candidates should have been awarded instead? Was it too early to award him, as some Nobel watchers have observed?

Have your say in the comments box below.

Tsvangirai should have won. What has Obama done yet? Troops are still in Iraq and no progress has been made on the Middle East. All respect to Obama, I think he will do great things. But he hasn't yet.

pidgeon 10/9/2009 11:39:08 AM
i don't obama has achieved much, he's a very good speaker, but that's it

Iur ed Anip 10/9/2009 11:42:05 AM
Yes..!! He Does..!!

LJE 10/9/2009 11:42:24 AM
I think it is the contrast he poses when comaparing his personality to Bush's. I don't think that anybody derserves the peace prize. No major difference was made in the world. Case in point are the attrocaties being committed in Myanmar while the world looks away. No mineral resources of any worth equals no incentive to intervene. Life is cheap.

Frank 10/9/2009 11:42:28 AM
Once again it's proven that Obama is more celebrity than statesman. Just have a look at how his health care plan is going and the statement by the commitee: "Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," is already proven to be incorrect. Anyone after George W would have looked better. I'd give it to Tsvangirai he has put in far more effort in a losing battle than anyone else.

cuba 10/9/2009 11:42:59 AM
While i am a fan of Obama, I think that the prize should of gone to mr. Tsvangirai given all the effort that he has put into saving his country and everything that he has been through.

IandI 10/9/2009 11:43:53 AM
The war still rages in Afghanistan and Iraq.Though started by Old Dubya I have not seen any peace there since Obama stepped in.Methinks it's too early to award it to him.

Ike Obidike 10/9/2009 11:44:29 AM
Obama deserves it by a mile considering his great efforts at dialoduing with all dangerous elements in seeking world peace.

Layman 10/9/2009 11:46:12 AM
I think it is too early for him to receive this prize. This should have been awared to him in about 3 years time.

peggy 10/9/2009 11:48:30 AM
Well deserved, Barak Obama is undoubtedbly the best being that has ever graced this planet to date. The world needs more Barak Obamas.

tip it 10/9/2009 11:48:41 AM
BULL,,, wtf has he done so far?..... after 4 yrs mayb... BUT now??,, wht has he done?... oslo has just devalued ALL nobel prize winners like arafat, or israel pm...or gore?... he actually wrked... WTF has obama done so far?.. wht concrete action has he taken?....

Dennis 10/9/2009 11:48:57 AM
Yes he does. For the simple reason that it would probably cause Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and other stupid conservatives to have a heart attack and fit of jealousy and die. Then...ONLY THEN will we have peace.

Peace and out.

Tamlyn 10/9/2009 11:50:04 AM
No - I think Julius Malema should have got it!

Motho 10/9/2009 11:50:41 AM
well done to him.

Realist 10/9/2009 11:51:08 AM
What nonsense! The man has done little so far except talk. One can think of a half dozen others that have dedicated their lives and time to furthering peace. They deserve consideration. Perhaps after some years this Obama might qualify, but right now this is obviously a politically motivated award.

Babalo 10/9/2009 11:54:09 AM
Hes nice person, good speaker and not sure of his leadership qualities. That is!
Honestly, he doesnt deserve it... he must stop the war in Afganistan and Iraq.

Why did he refuse to meet with Dala Alama??

Johan 10/9/2009 11:55:07 AM
What a joke, the USA,which he is president of,rages war in Afghanistan and Iraq???Tsvangirai should have taken it!!

koos meyer 10/9/2009 11:55:22 AM
maybe the polls were rigged by mugabe, its a crying shame a man that is still trying to liberate his country and people, another cruel hand dealt to morgan in an already hard lived life. such recognition would have symbolized that his hard work is not for nothing.

Willie 10/9/2009 11:55:27 AM
Fantastic and he has just started his efforts to bring peace to the world. This I think is only the beginning.

Nomsa 10/9/2009 11:55:53 AM
A well deserved recognition to a man who has brought integrity to the world and restored dignity to politics.

T 10/9/2009 11:57:20 AM
Thoroughly deserves it.

Kim Nguyen 10/9/2009 11:57:52 AM
I suppoese The prize should go for Zibawian priminister Tsvangirai for his sacrifice in peace of Zibawe. It is too early for Mr. Obama

Kenroid 10/9/2009 11:59:52 AM
Julius and Eugene Terrblanche should have shared it!!!!

Freddy 10/9/2009 12:01:09 PM
No! It doesn't make ant sense because he hasn't done any sagnificence yet & had a little achievements made. i clearly think Mr Tsvangirai deserved it if was a genuine thing. once again it shows how unfair african leaders are recognised...

taahira abdul 10/9/2009 12:01:23 PM
na, he doesnt deserve it... all talk and no action. many more deserving people out there....

Juan 10/9/2009 12:01:47 PM
Tsvangirai should have won it! He risked his LIFE for liberation against mugabe's terrorist organisation. Even when SA's anc terror organisation supported mugabe, Tsvangirai stood up against it. Obama's just all talk.

Amanda 10/9/2009 12:04:22 PM
Morgan Tsvangirai should have received this award. He has proven time and time again that he is committed to peace in his country. If he had won, imagine how great his supporters would have felt especially after all the intimidation and violence they had to endure at the hands of that monster.

Craig 10/9/2009 12:05:04 PM
Obama has fixed up none of the worlds problems, daily bomb attacks in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan, Iran and North Korea still on track to building their nuclear bombs, Israel, Gaza and Palestine still at each others throats, uncontrolled pirate attacks on civilian shipping off the north east african coast, 1000s dying in Somalia and Sudan, new IRA attacks in Londonderry ( US supported terror group.) where are his peace efforts. This was an absolutely disgusting result, he face no danger, no adversity and put no effort into any peace process, this was a politically motivated result to make Norway look good in the eyes of the Yanks. Tsvangirai should have taken it, Obama shouldn't have even been considered.

Man of Peace 10/9/2009 12:05:14 PM
Obama's troops are still in Iraq and Afghanistan. Plus there's talk surrounding the US invading Iran. Whatever his reasons are doesn't justify the fact that the leader of the worlds largest war campaigners wins the Nobel Peace Prize. I feel that Morgan should have taken it, hands down.

nqabza 10/9/2009 12:06:16 PM
well i do think that he deserves the price

Gabriele 10/9/2009 12:07:17 PM
After listening to his speech in Berlin I knew a man with a great spirit stands in frond of the world. He is an inspiration, he speaks of courage and invites us all to participate in making this world a better place. He deserves this recognition. Mr President I salute you from a country, South Africa, in need of men like you...

wtf 10/9/2009 12:07:21 PM
Ag, he so desperately want to be like Nelson Mandela! You'll never come close! Never! What have you done to deserve this?

Copper 10/9/2009 12:10:10 PM
No I don't think he should have won this award, at least not yet. Yes he's got some wonderful plans in the pipeline but honestly what has he done? Maybe in a couple of years time when or if something comes of the plans he's put in place - but no definately not now. Tsvangirai risked all to try help his ppl, personally I believe that this exceptional man deserves this award this year

Sharon 10/9/2009 12:10:44 PM
Margan Tsvangirai deserved it a whole lot more he has been trying for so long and risked his life and lost his wife for what he believed in.

Matibe 10/9/2009 12:12:26 PM
Congratulations Mr. President; however i'd like 2 c u do more by acting against any1 seeking 2 shortchange u'r peace agenda. 1. Aggresively deal with Hamas hardliners. 2. Deal with Israeli hardliners (avigdor, etc). 3. Aggresively de-nuclearise the ME, not only Iran. Israel, Pakistan, & India's nukes must be dealt with as well. 4. Remove narrow self serving interests from the US foreign policy, then China, Russia, etc will be shamed when their narrow interests jeopardise peace, developmment, etc. Hope 2 hear from u soon

rich 10/9/2009 12:12:45 PM
we're still in iraq
we're still in afghanistan
we're still running guantanamo bay

maybe he'd deserve in 3 years from now - but not now.

I don't think it's reasonable any 9-month old president would deserve this award.

this is just the tail-end of the thank-god-bush-ain't-president crowd celebrating.

Bonny 10/9/2009 12:15:30 PM
What? How ridiculous. Surely you have to DO things before being awarded this prize? And here we thought that actions spoke louder than words....

Pam 10/9/2009 12:16:04 PM
Morgan Tsvangirai sold his soul to Uncle Bob why should he be gaven the Nobel prize his people are worst off

Rob 10/9/2009 12:17:25 PM
As much respect as I have for Obama, and yes I support him, he hasn't done nearly enough to deserve the Noble Prize yet!!!!!!! Maybe in a couple years yes. Tsvangarai has been through hell and back for a humanitarian cause. Lets see Obama face beatings, prison etc. Not saying Obama isn't an incredible leader, he is and should be the US president, but he hasn't shown his metal just yet.

thysdj 10/9/2009 12:17:31 PM
Amazing!! Your country can be at war and you win the Nobel Peace Prize. What's next? You get caught writing graffiti on a toilet wall and win a Pulitzer? he does not deserve this and the Nobel Prize committee has shown it is nothing but a bunch of ninnies sucking up to the West.

Michael 10/9/2009 12:18:00 PM
I liken Obama to our own country's father, Nelson Mandela, both men are willing to look unselfishly at humanity as a whole and make decisions, sometimes unpopular anongst their own, to make this world a better place. Obama has my vote

De Wet 10/9/2009 12:18:06 PM
No, its too early for mr obama to be awarded this prize, i thought this prize resembled a fight for peace, i think the zimbabwian pm mr tsangirai should have been awarded this prize

pop 10/9/2009 12:18:30 PM
Nope, don't think he deserves it. The Noble peace prize should not be given for efforts, but achievements. Tsvangirai achieved more than Obama when comes to peace. Can the people that says Obama deserves it please enlighten us why?

Vrye Denker 10/9/2009 12:19:05 PM
If he has been awarded the Nobel Prize based purely on his hope-'n-change aspirations, rather than actual achievements, I think I deserve the Nobel Prize more than him. I have much grander dreams and ideals than him. I want everyone to be rich and satisfied and independent and happy with little bunnies running around eating rainbows pooped by unicorns.

Simon 10/9/2009 12:19:53 PM
What a crock. He has wars going in Afghanistan, Iraq where hundreds of thousands of civillians have been slaughtered by 'friendly fire' etc as well as combatants on both sides and he gets the peace award?? FFS! comes to mind

AJ 10/9/2009 12:21:42 PM
Obama? For what!! Tsvangirai miles before Obama - what is this celebrity / pedestal rubbish. Seems like a desparate act to manufacture yet another 'icon'. Listen I like Obama's style and content as an observer, but this is absolutely pandering rubbish. People are far too easily impressed these days.

nigel 10/9/2009 12:22:41 PM
What has he done??????

PAR 10/9/2009 12:24:18 PM
Morgan Tsvangirai had to sell his soul to try and save his people. He should have got the award for trying. Obama has done nothing.

AJ @ Peggy 10/9/2009 12:24:20 PM
Peggym, you are definately cut out for the mindless celebrity culture pervading in the world today manipulating the masses. If you did not have Heat magazine to keep you going, you'd roll up into a ball and 'peg'. Get some depth.

Maverick 10/9/2009 12:24:47 PM
Just remember, if it wasn't for the USA the rest of the world would be overun by terrorists of all sorts. I also think that Morgan Tsvangirai should have got the award, maybe next year.

El 10/9/2009 12:26:26 PM
Whenever this guy speaks the hopeful majority nods, that raises hope for many which makes him special. He hasn't achieved much yes, but he has the most stubborn opposition in the world and he is delayed by them because he doesn't wanna exclude them when taking decisions.Morgan has got a narrow scope but Obama is not only limitted US but the whole world is looking up to him in one way or the other.

Michael 10/9/2009 12:26:40 PM
Intent is half the game, belief being the other. I like Obama's intent, and I know he has the belief in his intent

Puhleez 10/9/2009 12:28:14 PM
Giving Tsvangarai the award would just give Uncle Bob more excluse to call him a "puppet of the West". It would not help his situation and I am sure that he is glad that the award did not go to him. Obama is a great man, he makes me proud to be human. Let men like him be recognised and men like Bob n' Bush be ignored!

Ronel 10/9/2009 12:28:14 PM
I agree that Tsvangirai should have received the award although I have a lot of respect for mr Obama and his efforts to unite the world. He sets a good example for all the black dictators out there. Watch and learn..

Nthatuwa 10/9/2009 12:32:09 PM
Me thinks Tsvangirai deserved it.But Obama deserves it as well.Oh well,Congrats to the winner.Obama had the guts to take the reigns after Bush devastatingly tarnished America's image & reputation.Big up to Morgan Tsvangirai,I still respect him.

EM 10/9/2009 12:32:36 PM
Yes he deserves it! who are you to dispute?Just learn something from him if you will ever make a leader that makes impact not only at home but abroad as well. His good comms is matched with his actions.we need more leaders with humane heart like him in this world.

TNC 10/9/2009 12:34:38 PM
wonder how much "the Illuminati " paid for this...In America you are put into the white house in order to advance agendas by Elites...

nick 10/9/2009 12:34:49 PM
Tsvangirai has been through so much more sh1t than Obama and deserves he deserves it, it would also give him more bargaining chips with the new government!

Indifferent 10/9/2009 12:36:09 PM
"Man has dominated man to his own injury" No human being will ever bring about world peace - Nobel Prize or not.

Craig 10/9/2009 12:37:37 PM
Reading the above comments saddens me, all those who believe it was a good decision to award him the prize either give no reasons or that they like his speaches, Eugene Terreblanche, Hitler, Idi Amin and Mugabe are/were great at giving speaches but none of them deserved a peace prize, because at the end of the day, as with all politicians, all there speeches was worthless, dishonest drivel.

Sheila Garvin 10/9/2009 12:39:12 PM
YES WE CAN if you can only dream...try love...

Poloyatonki 10/9/2009 12:40:46 PM
Zeitgeist

Thobi 10/9/2009 12:40:54 PM
Mmmh, hard to say. As for Tsvangirai, I think anyone in the world who dares take on Mugabe will go straight into people's hearts. And to those who keep asking "what has Obama done", should truly be embarassed to have to ask that in a public forum. My vote goes to Tsvangirai though still.

Nicked 10/9/2009 12:41:17 PM
Obama's a great guy, but I really think that Tsvangirai should have won. He's been though so much in order to achieve peace and prosperity in Zim, Obama has had an easy ride in comparison. Methinks that the US have too much of an influence on choosing who wins Nobel prizes...

Ian 10/9/2009 12:49:09 PM
Barrack Obama PLEASE SHOW US YOUR BIRTH CERTIFICATE.YOU ARE NOT ELIGABLE TO BE US PRESIDENT!!!

Pleased 10/9/2009 12:54:25 PM
Yes, absolutely, he not only talks the talk but walks the walk. He does not use agression or bully tactics but is all inclusive of all peoples. All leaders should strive to demonstrate this. he is not a johnny come latelty... his mere presence has changed the global political landscape and introduced some new rules of engagement.

Lungie 10/9/2009 1:00:40 PM
Tsvangirai should have won it

P K 10/9/2009 1:01:22 PM
He might be a nice guy and all that ,but I cannot understand why the leader of a Nation waging war in at least two countries should obtain a PEACE prize especially when there are hundreds of his own youth ( soldiers) dying by the year in these war zones, let him pull his soldiers out and then give him the prize

Gman 10/9/2009 1:01:38 PM
Surely it is too early in his term to start dishing out awards? Great inspirational talker, but as yet...results = zero?
What about Iraq and the soldiers that come home to the US in body bags on a regular basis...peace? hardly deserving at this stage in my opinion

Banana 10/9/2009 1:02:28 PM
Can he win it? Yes he can!

Mphatjie Monareng 10/9/2009 1:03:33 PM
The Nobel Peace Prize committee has jumped the gun this time around. The man is only nine months in office, and we don't what he may use his powers for. And he's already seemingly preparing for a comfrontation with Iran. These Nobel Peace guys may live to regret their decision.

Wendy 10/9/2009 1:05:10 PM
The new world order has awarded their son...

Obamania 10/9/2009 1:05:16 PM
I 100% agree with "Indifferent"'s comment.
However, Obama IS a great leader! See, watch and learn, Julius!!!

Open your eyes 10/9/2009 1:06:17 PM
Obama is a puppet controlled by the same people that controlled Bush and Clinton and every president except Kennedy.
They are the same people that control the money and the same people that control the banks.
Obama can only do what they let him or tell him to do.
The sad part is unlike Bush, people actually believed in this one and fell for it.

Dolf 10/9/2009 1:07:26 PM
Obama peace prize. The guys is a billiant orator and thats it. USA is still at war. So why the peace prize then ?

chez 10/9/2009 1:08:19 PM
To put it in context, is he in the same league as Mandela/de Klerk, Tutu or the Dalai Lama? The answer is HELL NO! This just shows how far up the America's butt the rest of the world is. Obama tells us he is a good man but only when HIS country has no weapons of mass destruction should he be considered.

Rob 10/9/2009 1:10:29 PM
What a load of crapp. Only you Sheep Brains will be impressed by this ilogical award. Obama is nothing but a good actor with a politically correct skin.

DJ 10/9/2009 1:16:32 PM
It is so obvoius: US president ratings down - how do we get it up? Make war? Nope lets try do something new and give him a prize. This makes an absolute mockery of the Nobel prize!

Pieter 10/9/2009 1:16:57 PM
Brilliant and well deserved and a very smart gentleman who have done so much in such a short period of time. This is the best leader in the entire world.

Tsvangirai 10/9/2009 1:17:04 PM
I DESERVED IT. ALL THE TORTUE I WENT THRU FOR NOTHING. CUM NOW....I'MA TELL UNCLE BOB

Talk 10/9/2009 1:19:01 PM
All he has done is talk. Some of his visions seem naive (no nuclear weapons == peace). He has not actually made a difference. I think he is the right man in the right job, but talk and perception should not get him the peace prize - not yet anyway.

Stinso 10/9/2009 1:20:28 PM
That is absolute rubbish. The man has barely served 10 months in office. What exactly has Obama done in this period to warrant such an honour? It took the likes of Mandela and Tutu years to actually win similar accords and yet Obama does this in 10 months. There definitely is more to this than meets the eye.

R Fouche 10/9/2009 1:20:48 PM
Definitely not. He has been a bit of a damp squib after the hype of his election. You cannot win a prize for something you promised but have not delivered on yet. There were other far worthier candidates who really have tried for peace (Morgan Tsvangirai springs to mind).

Bruce 10/9/2009 1:21:59 PM
Morgan should have won it. He has suffered serious bodily injury through torture, trauma and risked his life for the sake of peace in his country. Obama hasn't made one sacrifice yet.

stuart 10/9/2009 1:22:18 PM
Peace price or bull.... baffles brains prize! He does nor deserve it - how can speeches on peace equate to delivering it bearing in mind that after 9 months there are no changes to the theatres of war the USA are involved in. Also, over the past 10 years we have had three USA politicians win this prize. Is the NOBEL committee merely pandering to the global milatary giant?

Steve 10/9/2009 1:27:23 PM
Next on Barack's agenda...world domination

Gwen 10/9/2009 1:49:29 PM
The only person who has any common sense in this colum is Michael who ikens Pres Bama to Mr Mandela. Yes all he has done is talk. But ley just say is that is how you achieve peace.I challenge anybody on this forum to stand in Mr Obama's shoe and then come back and criticise

just askin 10/9/2009 1:50:11 PM
rediculous - what peace has he made more troops in Afghanistan no movement on shutting his war time prison in cuba done nothing in middle east - which war has he stopped are USA at peace now and when do the troops go home i hadn't heard there was a cease fire. surely this is a joke and the real winner will be announced soon.

Bullsh1te 10/9/2009 1:51:56 PM
He did exactly the opposite of what he prommised the American peoplle in campaign. He is just the mouthpiece of the new World order.

maz 10/9/2009 1:53:31 PM
There are those who talk about peace and nothing happens (Obama, Bush) and there are those who make it happen (Mandela, Tutu, De Klerk, Tsvangarai). This is outrageous. Why give the worlds highest honour to someone who hasn't done anything yet.

Mobster 10/9/2009 1:54:06 PM
It really looks like tokenism. I have nothing against Obama, but he's only been in office for just short of 9 months. There hasn't been the "test of time". I'm of the opinion that the Nobel Commitee erred in its judgement. There are certainly more suitable candidates like Tsvangerai, Jia, Cordoba & the lady from Myanmar (Burma).

Mpho 10/9/2009 1:57:48 PM
I honestly think Mr Obama is a remarkable man but he does not deserve the prize so soon.Mr Tsvangirai deserves it.That man has been fighting and is still fighting for his country.MORGAN for President.

Soapbox 10/9/2009 1:59:13 PM
Was there any peace achieved in the world this year? If not, and the prize money is burning your pocket, give the money to to poor.

nolo 10/9/2009 2:02:29 PM
NEW WORLD ORDER, truth is what Oboma is saying and intending will put a lot of people out of business and the only way to keep him in line is through appraizal and the percieved power he holds. at the end of the day he will be told to fall in line or have all that he has 'achieved' recalled.

thats politics for you, for all of you who think that Obama runs the show will need to wake up the most powerfull people are the ones who put him in power.

deedee 10/9/2009 2:05:16 PM
Barack has changed history...TRUe....but- he hasnt achieved ANY peace...there is no tangible or even intangible evidence of that.
he is a good person. BUT - I am adamant that HE did not deserve it.. i think Gareth Cliff should have won!
hahahaha

Yay to Obama 10/9/2009 2:08:36 PM
I think Obama does deserve this prize for the simple reason that he is a symbol that this world is changing, that all are equal and all deserve equal opportunity.

SIMANGELE 10/9/2009 2:09:37 PM
ITS STILL EARLY DAYS FOR BARACK,THE MAN WHO HAS TAKEN A LOT OF HEAT AND WHO CAN ROLL WITH THE PUNCHES DESERVES THIS, THAT IS MORGAN TSANGARAI

va 10/9/2009 2:10:04 PM
great man but he doesnt deserve it yet theres other people who deserve it more at this time

Lewis 10/9/2009 2:11:56 PM
Obama has done nothing to deserve it. Tsvangirai should have received it. By far.

No ways 10/9/2009 2:12:29 PM
No. He doesn't deserve it!!!

John the Saint 10/9/2009 2:14:26 PM
There is a huge difference between talking about peace and actually creating peace.

Morgan should've got it.

Johan 10/9/2009 2:17:21 PM
I agree PAR. Obama has done nothing but "talk". Morgan Tsvangirai has endured physical and emotional beatings for what he believes in. He is the better of the two.

JBS 10/9/2009 2:19:58 PM
What about the atrocities in Myanmar,Shri Lanka, and the plight of the Tibetans.Oh, I forgot, they do not have resources that are going to be useful to "THE BIG" boys!Is it only the Middle East that is of concern to world?

chris 10/9/2009 2:26:44 PM
I believe "they" want to put pressure on Obama to pull troops out of Afghanistan / Iraq , etc

Ryno 10/9/2009 2:27:44 PM
Not bad for a puppet!!! can you spell stings!

Steve 10/9/2009 2:29:42 PM
Truth be told Obama not going to get involved in anything that does not help him achieve Middle East peace. That is his destiny and it was written about 2000 years ago!

john bull 10/9/2009 2:31:26 PM
I saw a guy stop a fight that had kicked off in my local pub about which beer was better...and then Obama comes along and steals his thunder

Max 10/9/2009 2:36:46 PM
Obama is a liar. He is plunging America into disaster with his national health care crap. He promised to remove the troops from Afghanistan, but then he rather sends more troops there to die. He is a frontman for the jews and the New World Order!

I support Obama but this is ridiculous. Tsvangirai was beaten half to death several times in his struggle to save Zimbabwe. I am sure Obama will do great things but what has he done so far to deserve the prize, and with war still raging in Afhganistand and Iraq?

Brouhaha 10/9/2009 2:45:20 PM
And the Oscar goes to? Obama

Shan 10/9/2009 2:50:51 PM
Token prize for a token president.

Skully 10/9/2009 2:58:17 PM
Huh? What did he do?

Zee 10/9/2009 3:01:18 PM
I'm a fan of his but bestowing the peace prize on him is an absolute joke. His country is still the biggest war-monger on the planet today and even though he wants to strive for a world without nukes his country still has the largest arsenal of them by far! How does he deserve this ahead of Morgan T, the Dalai Lama etc? Craziness...

Rovi 10/9/2009 3:02:53 PM
Whilst it's a great honour for him to be a candidate for the peace prize, I am very sorry Tsvangari did not go on to win the recognition he so justly deserved. Whilst I have great hopes for Obama, I don't think he justifies this award yet. (Maybe this is just a sign that Africa's plight is slowly desending into insignificance?) If he can hold the course, and continue to be honest and honourable, Tsvangari will be recognised and remembered as Zimbabwe's Mandela

Anton 10/9/2009 3:09:49 PM
The closing date for nominations was 2 weeks after Obama took office. The award is NOT based on any actions or efforts, it is based purely on media hype.

Pat Leonard 10/9/2009 3:12:08 PM
I do not think he deserves it considering many others worldwide that have put more effort and their lives into peace. maybe he will give it back when America next decides to go to war? (Iran?)

jock van wyk 10/9/2009 3:14:58 PM
If Obama had come to Africa and just created peace in one African country i would agree to give him the peace prize.Otherwise he has done nothing for peace in this world

Skebekwa 10/9/2009 3:16:45 PM
Obama is just a tool of large agenda; there is a man behind the curtain, who is holding a remote control…

Josie 10/9/2009 3:17:07 PM
Congratulations Mr Obama! We all look forward to world peace in the not too distant future! We're counting on you...

martha 10/9/2009 3:17:45 PM
No, I do not think he has done something to deserve this yet. What is going on in this world? It would have been better to wait a few years and see actual results. There are surely other people out there that deserves this more.

@Maverick 10/9/2009 3:17:53 PM
Oh please bud - what a ridiculous post. If it weren't for the US the world would be overrun by terrorists? You forget which country is fighting more wars off their own turf than anyone else! Get real with this Americanised crap, the US is run by a bunch of wealthy individuals who want to rule the world.

EDWARD RAMEREGI 10/9/2009 3:20:27 PM
he deserve it.large number of people across the world like him and vote for him,he force african and europian,uk american and afghanstan together

Phil 10/9/2009 3:21:18 PM
For all of those who have not realised this little fact,.......soldiers from the US of A are still in Germany, South Korea, Japan, and many other nations of the world. What has this man done to afford him this honour? My goodness, his policies on trade and on American world domination is identical to that of Mr George Bush. This must be the biggest joke of the century!

Ebi 10/9/2009 3:22:07 PM
Wow, its a sad day. He really does not deserve this award.

Jake 10/9/2009 3:22:56 PM
I have nothing against Mr Obama but this is really an insult to Mr T and Africa as a whole. I guess Mr O will do more to promote the Nobel Committee & its prize than anyone from Africa which is not nearly as "sexy" as the USA. I hope someone or some organization sees fit to present Mr T with a humanitarian award - where would Zim & its people be today without him?

Charlie 10/9/2009 3:23:33 PM
Absolutely ridiculous. He's an actor, not a statesman. Should have been given an Oscar instead.

DrGonzo 10/9/2009 3:27:30 PM
If McCain had won and became president and did exactly the same things Obama did, do you think he would have won this prize? This is just another pathetic excuse to say sorry to the black man.

Either that or people are just really glad that George W ain't president no more.

edward rameregi 10/9/2009 3:31:30 PM
i think he deserve it.his reputation and his did.we hear about him around the world.thanks

Virgin Queen 10/9/2009 3:33:46 PM
Every leader that has been able to achieve what Obama has in such a short period of time should be rewarded, but there are far more deserving people than him, people who have experienced suffering but perservered in the midst of unfavourable conditions, those who have endured for years.

Linda 10/9/2009 3:35:30 PM
This should be seen more as a sign of hope and positive changes to come - America is a global powerhouse and its people need to believe in something again... maybe then the big countries will finally look to helping the likes of Zimbabwe.

Mugabe should take note - a black president is actually wielding his powers for the good of his PEOPLE, not his wallet

Jan Hofmeyr 10/9/2009 3:40:36 PM
What a joke! Tsvangirai has dealt with real problems instead of just talking about them.

Vic 10/9/2009 3:45:00 PM
"Should have been given an Oscar instead."

ROFLMAO

If he accepts it he will be incapacitated to make any objective decisions regarding war. It's a psychological bribe and from now on the Nobel Peace Prize will be as fake as a three rand coin.

ANON 10/9/2009 3:48:05 PM
All you people who critise make me sick! Why dont you gt off you fat backsides and see how far YOU get trying to make a difference. What do you do that's so perfect??? huh???? Give me a break.....

ProfAndy 10/9/2009 3:50:58 PM
I've lost all faith in the Nobel committee after this travesty...

Steev 10/9/2009 4:06:34 PM
What morons, he has averted the biggest financial meltdown since 1929 through bold and swift action in the proccess condemning the greedy exec's making them pay back ridicuolous undesirved bonuses. Are you people ASLEEP? So he has effectively averted the USA's bankrupcy! WTF...what has he done you ask! Not to mention a harder stance on Isreal and reaching out to the Muslim world. Do you people actually take in current events or do you dream up you own version of reality. Ja, to much big brother.

shavhi 10/9/2009 4:27:25 PM
for what? he has not done anything yet.

Jonty 10/9/2009 4:30:34 PM
What a friggin joke - makes a mockery of the whole Nobel thing!

Lethu 10/9/2009 4:39:06 PM
I think its a bit early for such a prize.Tswangirai would have been a worthy candidate seeing what he went through and despite that he is still promoting peace in his country.

EM 10/9/2009 4:41:27 PM
Armchair critics...some of you cant stomach it that someone of his age and clour can achieve so much in such short time.NOTE:he has turned the global economy around(with recession in place forget about peace), he has brought world leaders together, has practical steps on de-nuclearisation, stoped irritant nuclear misile shield from europe..and the list is growing!

Johannes 10/9/2009 4:43:54 PM
Very brave Mr Obama, you parents or you cheated with birth certificates. And you brought the Americans into more slavery to give the banks money, it has to be paied by the average citizen you idiote, don't you know? Or do you?

ball 10/9/2009 5:00:25 PM
He certainly has had a lot to say, but no tangible achievements yet - premature award in my view, but good luck to BO. Not the easiest of jobs and not likely to get better as time goes by.

Mensah 10/9/2009 5:08:29 PM
I think this nobel price is more forward looking that past accomplishments. Obama has started a very good course with huge potential to impact global peace, something the world desperately now needs now. This will undoubtedly give a new impetus to global peace negotiations. His intiative needs to be supported. Believe you me the effect of this unprecedented award will be positively felt 3 years from now. The world will be a better palce to live. I think he derserves it in spite of his short term in office.

NO!!!!!

barry 10/9/2009 5:09:01 PM
all things said I think it is not too late for Obama to offer his prize to Morgan. It may yet happen. No resaon to justfiy such meritorious act of humanity. Both are of African decent and that could be another reason to say Africa deserved the gesture.

Kimmi 10/9/2009 5:19:07 PM
Should have gone to Morgan Tsvangirai - no question about it.

jason 10/9/2009 5:39:34 PM
Obama? Nobel Peace Prize? What the hell is going on? Last I looked you actually had to DO something worthwhile to earn one of those. Being the first "black" US president isn't an achievement. It's the result of a vote.

n 10/9/2009 5:48:26 PM
LOL looks like they counted how many people had Obama as their favourite politician and said okay can't give to the chinese guy, China's more open; can't give to the zim guy, Mugabe's still in control and um what have all 205 done for world peace??? ummm judging by Obama-mania give it Obama he seems popular even though's done nothing beyond being black and being a typical US democrat president LOL

Hopeful! 10/9/2009 5:52:39 PM
I'm a fan of Obama but believe that it is way too premature to award him the prize now. He has been talking the talk, but we needed to wait to see the results before awarding him the prize. Tsvangarai is a much more deserving candidate for his "real" fight in Zim. I'm very disappointed with the Nobel Committee.

Jim Rockford 10/9/2009 6:00:30 PM
Tsvangirai for the price, you gotta be kidding me, Obama does not deserve it either, neither should he get $ 1.4 Mio big dollars. He is a good man with lots on his plate and good intention indeed but ain't it too early for such a huge reward? What has he done for it, the US is still the biggest aggressor in the world, selling weapons in every corner of this planet and exploiting countries for their oil, initiating war and chaos like the do in Iraq and Afghanistan. Its a huge joke, thats what it is....

n 10/9/2009 6:13:40 PM
obama won for being black. as a black person he broke a racial barrier and became the first black person in modern history to be in charge of the "most powerful nation in the world". the nice thing about is that he had support across all racial groups and age groups worldwide. beyond that he is just another typical democrat US president. he shouldn't be burdened with trying to be more than. Obama is not a saviour, he is just another US president..

Eric Hamner 10/9/2009 6:29:57 PM
From an proud Black American living in South Africa.

President Obama has done nothing to deserve such an award - must be a mistake they surely meant to give it to Magube!!!!

Jaap 10/9/2009 7:15:04 PM
De Klerk...Obama....getting a peace prize is as easy as handing over your country without a struggle.

Startled Yank 10/9/2009 7:17:06 PM
What a travesty! Tsvangirai clearly should have won. Is there no end to fawning over this chain-smoking, teleprompter-using, celebrity president of ours? I'm truly embarrassed! Mr. Tsvangirai--you are more of a hero to the American people than Obama!

Mr Booi 10/9/2009 7:36:35 PM
Although the reasons to award Pres. Hussein Obama are soundful, I think there were candidates who had more vibrant credits. I mean, the road Zimbabwean Prime minister have walked, the reformation and diplomatic talks to reinstate his country into the worls, the sacrifies he made to form a coalition government with the oppressive regime, is with no doubt, outstanding, and I think he, amongst others, ws the right candidate.

K 10/9/2009 7:42:07 PM
I now have lost my respect for the Nobel Prize. It has become worthless. What a pity that it was given to somebody who doesn't deserve it.

Definately definately no !
Morgan T for american and Zimbabwean president. he
has done so much more even laying his own life on the line for his country and people. Nobel prizes
committee gone dippy like Mugabe.

Interesting decision - actually not surprising given that Obama's pularity has been on the wane. This is an insult to previous winners .

Dr David Hill 10/9/2009 8:10:35 PM
There is no doubt in my mind that President Obama is a very good man indeed, but the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to him is too early in my mind. In this respect the wider world was not even aware of him just a mere three years ago. I am not saying that he was not a worthy candidate, but where there are more worthy people in this life who indirectly save millions of lives, are completely unknown for their effects on global peace work and are therefore never considered for the Nobel Award. This is the dilemma hovering over the Nobel Peace Prize. Have those who have won the Prize saved more lives that anyone else through their actions? Unfortunately I have to say that at this point in time I doubt that Obama can enter into such an illustrious group of people who have literally saved more lives than any others in our world history.
I had the privilege to work with two of the world’s most unknown celebrities who did indeed save millions of lives through their incredible work and where this work still saves millions every year all over the world. The first is the late Glenn Seaborg, the ‘father’ of the chemistry of Chemotherapy and initiator of the ‘Test Ban Treaty’ for Nuclear weapons. It is estimated that Seaborg through his chemistry and his creation of many of the chemical isotopes used in chemotherapy, has saved literally over 100 million human lives to date over the past 50-years alone. This has been through a cure or an extension of human life and where their loved ones have benefited through having these loved ones with them far longer than would have been the case without Seaborg’s incredible creativity. Many more millions of human lives ravaged by Cancer will be saved in the future and today. Indeed the number of people saved by the nuclear test ban initiation is incalculable, but one has to only think, where the world might be today without Seaborg’s initiative. Indeed, Nuclear war might well have happened already in our own lifetime.
The second person that I worked with was the late John Argyris, the modern-day inventor of the ‘Finite Element Method’. To put this great engineering achievement into perspective is hard to do for the layman, but where it has revolutionised global engineering design so much that we now have far safer cars, buildings, bridges, aeroplanes, dams, trains, and the list goes on. Indeed, without Argyris’s input for NASA’s pre-runner, the 1969 moon landing would never have happened and the space-shuttle may never have removed itself from planet Earth..
Adding to this today through Argyris’s revolutionary engineering work we live in a completely safer world and where his work has even spread into all the sciences, including physiology, where the minutest of stress in the human body can be detected and a patient’s life saved. Indeed, it is estimated again that Argyris has saved hundreds of millions through this far greater safety in structural design throughout the world, through buildings and dams et al not collapsing. But were these two great men of science and engineering who have saved literally millions and millions of lives ever considered by the Nobel Foundation for their Peace Prize by saving all these millions? No.
I therefore feel that the Nobel Prize as today belittles itself again, its real value and against those humanitarians who do truly deserve it. But there again it has to be said that Gandhi never received it, even though he was nominated five-times. In the year of his death, the Nobel Foundation said that there were no candidates worthy enough and did not award the Prize that year.

President Obama does NOT deserve any prize yet!!! He did nothing to be prize, infact he should be condemned. He did so much bad than good. He miserably failed to talk against the Israel nuclear only talk about the weak Iran, he is just a salesman. He only knows how to deliver eloquent speeches, and I guess this man promised us haven and is going to give us hell.

BH 10/9/2009 9:00:14 PM
He doesn't deserve it. He is the president of a country that is instigating violence all around the world. How can he get the peace prize. Absolutely ridiculous.

dariah 10/9/2009 10:15:27 PM
Obama does'nt deserve the award as there were other nominees who have a far nobler track record of having actually "done" something to bring peace to their countries! he should have proved to the world how great he really is by declining the award. how can he be on the same level as Sir Albert Luthuli,Madiba, Tutu,Martin Luther King, Mother Theresa and many others who deserved the award. I am saddened that the hendforth the award will never have the same meaning!

Q 10/10/2009 12:02:00 AM
I have mixed thoughts on this one. On the one hand Obama has changed US foreign policy in such a way that it promote world peace, and on the other you got the likes of Tsvangirai that have tirelessly tried to bring about peace in their country. Though both are far from achieving their full goals, Obama's has greater implications.

rgrant 10/10/2009 8:41:59 AM
Julius Malema should have won it. His strategy of "No opposition, no problem" would bring peace to SA

sa 10/10/2009 8:53:27 AM
Shame on you The Nobel Lauret committee who I along with lots of people believe that they have lost their way . EXACTLY WHAT HAS OBAMA done for world peace other than blab his way into our homes via TV/media attention. talking of nuclear disarmament in the Cairo address was just a 'dress'ing over in the Middle East cos he did not address the nuclear strike capability of Israel. The real shame is the foolish decision by the awards committee is this young unproven "boy" who speaks well has been awarded an honour while he sits with his war council planning his next steps towards destroying another country

Nesomaniac 10/10/2009 11:32:10 AM
Peace prize?? Should be renamed the Nobel Big Mouth prize - it all started to go pear-shaped the day they awarded the prize to Al Gore. I also have good intentions - do I, therefore, also qualify for a million bucks?

shakila 10/10/2009 12:11:09 PM
What is the world coming to?All other nobel prize winners have really achieved something. Obama gets it for being a "black" american president. What has he done? He still has troops in iraq & he hasnt done much to bring about peace in the world. I am disheartened by the stupidity of it all.
Our world is making heroes out of nobodys.

Dominic 10/10/2009 1:27:17 PM
Yes, President has captured the world, but I dont think he deserved the prize. Firstly, he has not been in office for even a year. Secondly I do not think his efforts were on the same level as previous winners. Poor Mr Tsvangirai suffered years of abuse by Mugabe, and yet is is still be able to forgive. Mr Tsvangirai is definitely on the same level as previous winners, and in my opinion he deserves it more than anyone else. I am glad though that President Obama is donating all the money to charity.

Bonnie 10/10/2009 2:49:51 PM
NO! He doesn't deserve it. Swangarai from Zimbabwe deserve it more (he was on the list). Swangarai has gone through A LOT MORE than Obama this year and what did Obama actually do - than travelling to one place to another and have talks...sad..very sad. Not even mother Theresa too..as dairah mentioned... she's "fake" - as many of us have discovered..read the truth about her - and about King.

selby 10/10/2009 3:09:36 PM
ithink he deserve the award because is one of the influential president in the21 first century and is working tireless to achieve peace in the world.

Wake up sheeple !!!! 10/10/2009 7:25:18 PM
I woke up to the news that Obama had won the Nobel peace prize. First thought– “Why? What did he do to earn it? Extend the Afghan war? About to send thousands more American youngsters in the military to fight a war in a place that no country has ever managed to overcome. Send thousands of storm trooper police to Pittsburgh for G-20?..Kissinger won it in 1971 and the New World Order Neocons are rewarding their best with a Nobel Peace Prize...Wake up peo...uh sheeple !!!!

Dinni 10/10/2009 11:11:55 PM
Tsvangirai deserve it!!! His name was on the list too. obama hasn't done anything good so far. Tsvangirai fought for peace! He went through a lot more than OBAMA!

Jakes 10/11/2009 12:14:47 AM
This is typical western strategy of trying to encourage Obama to persue iran to stop nuclear "research" and if not join israel on world war 3. simple, hes an idiot to have accepted it and a fool to believe that it was based on merit. They playing you Mr president, wake up, smell the uranium.

dumbfounded 10/11/2009 12:23:03 AM
I am truly amazed....
What exactly has Obama done to deserve a nobel peace prize???? Mandela got it after spending half his life in prison... Tutu won it for his tireless efforts in brokering peace, De klerk won it for his part in the demolition of apartheid against the threat of a military coup... and Obama has barely finished swearing his oath to office.... excuse me??? is it just me.. or does this award seriously cheapen the achievements of every other person ever to have won it...
he might be worthy of it someday.. but he hasn't actually done a thing to deserve it.. what a farce!

impi 10/11/2009 9:54:14 AM
he is the new mandela. well done, president obama, you deserve it.

david Fitzhugh 10/11/2009 6:39:12 PM
Tsvangirai is much more deserving. Obama is much style and little substance as the world we come to see in the next few years.

Fred 10/11/2009 11:30:30 PM
B.O. was nominated for the prize only 2 weeks after he took office. He surely did nothing by then and still did not do a darn thing worth mentioning exept breaking his promises to the people who elected him. He is a blatant liar and one of the biggest bulshitters to ever walk the face of the earth. And we thought Bush was bad????

Start a war.
Continue a war.
Add troops to a war.
"see" the end of a war.
"supposedly" fight for freedom.
"more troops" = peace?
How about a "piece" of Iraq, a piece of afghan oil, a piece of ass...
sure: he deserves the PIECE prize, every american president does.

how is a candidate shortlisted on this Nobel Prize award? ...because he is a great orator perharps, im not fully certain if Obama has done any good just yet. he may be able to talk the talk, but can he walk the walk?

Jaydee 10/12/2009 4:19:05 PM
WAY,WAY, WAY TO SOON.

The Nobel Peace prize is awarded after YEARS of effort, understanding, co-operation, genuine will and want to help others. Obama is a political pawn moved around the world by his cabinet. Soley to appease the nations not included in the world power struggle.

DEFINATELY NOT A GOOD MOVE..THEIR NOT KIDDING ANYONE WITH THIS GESTURE.

Charlie Chaplin 10/12/2009 4:57:36 PM
Yes he is definitely a good leader, has changed a lot in his country, made some good remarks on world politics but nothing more. To be appointed as candidate is a bit 'oordrewe', like we say in Afrikaans. He has not made such an impact to deserve that title according to me.

MarcP 10/13/2009 8:24:46 AM
He just sent 13 000 more troops to Afghanistan. I guess he is earning his noble peace prize. Peace through conquering the opposition. Once they have killed everyone, peace will prevail. So much for him having made the election promise of ending the wars that the USA are in at the moment.

dud 10/13/2009 9:09:18 AM
the Nobel selection forum is a farce. Obama does not deserve the award. period! The decision is politically motivated and brownie point orientated, nothing else!

DG 10/13/2009 9:24:15 AM
What a mockery this has made of the Nobel peace prize and an insult to previous winners !! Anyone can make the promises .. and then send more troops into war. There are so many more deserving names on the list who have made a huge difference to peace and goodwill after years of actual implementation and self sacrifice. So far all Obama has proven that he is just a puppet a frontman, a spokesman. This prize just goes to show that there are people promoting him for reasons we have yet to see - and it wont be for peace

dre 10/13/2009 9:28:16 AM
Tsvangirai deserved to win the prize.Obama has not yet done nothing so far measurable in the great depth to win the prize. The committe erred in its conclusion. This is fundamentally unprecedented and misleading.Maybe peple do not understand let alone know the criteria if any ,used to award the prize

A bit premature I reckon, they should've waited till his first term of office. Then again, there are other more deserving people such as Morgan Tsvangirai. He's sacrificed so much! Whatever Obama has done does not, I think, constitute a an award.

for all you folks who thinks it was not the right prize for the right person...

Well for a start he has instilled the belief that being black is no excuse to be entitled but rather through hard work. He was democratically elected, probably by a nation who despite the recession, they are the free'st big nation on earth. He has insperated the entire worl. If he fals, then we can say it was premature. If he does not get wacked by some lunatic, he will become one of the best leaders in our history. This earth is big, and the beast he is trying to direct is not so easy. If poor Morgan got it, then people would have died in that country....Obama....who else could we recommend...Julius Malema?

malik 10/14/2009 8:54:22 AM
i am a big fan of barack obama, but honestly he doesn't deserve this nobel peace prize because he is still doing the talking , he has good idea to make the world a better place like most of us do, do we then give nobel peace prize based on ideas or based on results ? if he deserves it ,i also deserve it because i also want the world to be a better place but i am not doing anything to make it happen.let give this nobel prize to people who have achieved this result instead of giving it to people who aspire to achieve this. let not use the nobel prize as a motivator to achieve peace but as a recognition to people who have achieved peace.if we need to motivate people to achieve peace let create another nobel peace prize category.

I dont agree with Obama getting the prize, I really dont see what he has done to deserve it. I think its been awarded in expectation of what he will do, but then politicians seldom live up to peoples expectations. In my opinion Tsvangirai should have beat him hands down

So far 'Bama's been very good at saying the right stuff, but not at actually implementing. Look at Gitmo as an example. If the committee is starting to hand out prizes based on speeches, I'm sure Mugabe will get it next year for not saying stupid things - if he can manage to keep quiet for long enough.
