'Where are you?'

by Quintin
2009-10-06 07:11

I have a few questions that I'd like to raise with all our well-educated, university graduated people who have taken up employment in our government departments.

1. Where are you?

- During these tumultuous times, we need your guidance and wisdom. The politicians don't necessarily have a clue how to run a government as their area of expertise is definitely not good governance. I'm only seeing the worst in the media at the moment.

2. Are you blind?

- During the last few months, the ruling party would like all citizens to believe that 16 years of bad management and corruption will automatically cease because President Jacob Zuma has said so, even though he continually finds ways to set his best friends up with top government positions.

3. Where do you draw the line?

- How far will you go to remain loyal to a cause that has shown itself to be very self-serving and based entirely on the enrichment of the individual?

Our country needs leaders who care for the people of South Africa. I don't think the ruling party knows what that is though. Every day the wind is knocked from us "little folk" who have to tolerate the behaviour of our government officials and politicians. Here we find politicians, judges, policemen and more, going to court for various criminal charges and showing the most disgusting contempt for the rule of law because they are well connected to the ruling party. Even when found guilty, they still don't show remorse for stealing from poor people.

Every other day we find more shocking reports of maladministration by the people the ruling party put in place to run our municipalities, and then flaunt their stolen wealth as a reason to belong to the ruling party. Where are our great minds then? Are they not available to oversee these things? Don't they care anymore?

Our people are burning their neighbourhoods to the ground and all we get are empty promises and more lies.

I'm sure that many people want to know what the heck is going on. Is our democracy as safe as the ruling party would have us believe? How can it be when hate speech is encouraged and racism is condoned.

That's what I feel when nobody tells Julius Malema that he is out of line. That's what I feel when politicians insult women by hurling their fists and abuse at their wives and then get married in condoned polygamy (which is, incidentally, illegal by law for the rest of South Africans).

I ask you learned and esteemed leaders to look beyond what occurred in the past, as this measuring stick no longer applies. We need to look at our future and how the ruling party is shaping it.

Policies, oversight, responsibility and truth are yours to keep but not for yourselves. You are employed for the purpose of making our people into a nation that can flourish.

QUINTIN - where are you. You seem to know it all, but you seem not to think you also have a role to play. This according to you is a fight to be fought by government employees only - then you are so wrong and actually so BLIND!

NAZ 10/6/2009 7:41:58 AM
Brilliant article,I am sure you share the sentimens of many but why do think graduates can make a difference,most of the people behind the scenes is graduates who are only interested in filling their own coffers,the solution is to implement and follow GOD'S divine law which means that our leaders will not be able to follow their own desires,I know that some people will mock at this idea because of their pervisities and worship of their desires.

Could it be? 10/6/2009 7:43:00 AM
Could it be that there is a difference between those graduates who demanded to pass university and those who studied to pass? Oops, I forgot - the latter mostly don't score you any BEE points...

Governement worker 10/6/2009 7:43:04 AM
Blah blah blah. What are you doing to contribute to South Africa. The government can only do so much, even though they not doing much. You must do your bit as well, dont ask the university grads in government where they are!!! Be proactive, set an example for others to follow. Dont be a sheep, be a leader!!!!

Paul A 10/6/2009 7:43:11 AM
Blah, Blah, Blah!

BT 10/6/2009 7:46:49 AM
@Mpho. I would hazard a guess that Quintin does not work for the government, so would not have any direct influence on the issues raised. The questions are specifically addressed at the inner circles of the ruling party. But to your point, we can all do something, ie vote them out, although, unfortunately, we have a long way to go before the next elections. In the meantime, I fear, we will increasingly witness a continuation of all these issues, and ongoing strikes and destruction by disgruntled people, due to non service delivery. I do not condone this behaviour in any way. In fact, I find it as deplorable as the very issues raised by Quintin, as perpetrated by our "so called leaders".

Simon 10/6/2009 7:47:27 AM
Nice article indeed. The truth is that if anyone of these so called literate employees in our government departments should open their mouths they are out because they were employed as a result of knowing someone in the ranks or paid someone to get there. Look at all the countries in Africa as soon as the so called liberators took over corruption and mismanagement thrive as it is their culture that jungle law rules. He who is in power takes it all. Name one country in Africa where true democracy is being practiced?

Monyobi 10/6/2009 7:55:39 AM
You should accept and respect the democratic elected ANC government. The same question can also be raised of where were the very same educated people and the religous people who were enjoying apartheid priveleges were during the apartheid era. Why did they support the apartheid regime which was persecuting the oppressed disadvantaged population. The problem with you is that you were indoctrinated to such an extend that you will never see any good coming from a black person. You should stop being lazy and think beyond your nose about the methodology of improving our country. Athough I know for a fact that your people still yearn for the past regime which is over and done with. You should humbly accept that democracy has taken place and respect other people's culture like polygamy which is legal for your information. Go do some research before writing this hogwash.

Steven 10/6/2009 7:56:45 AM

I ask you learned and esteemed leaders

mwuahahahahahaha, WHAT? We have ONE! ZILLE. The rest ???? All cronies and terrorist by any name!

Steven 10/6/2009 7:57:31 AM
PS, the Grads you referring to ? probably all BEE with a pass rate of 75%.

Iceberg 10/6/2009 7:57:45 AM
Quentin, your short answers:
1.The really well eductaed people are either sidelined by BEE or living in Australia and NOT working for government or the ANC.
2.Quentin, you are blind. The really well educated people have left government, the ANC and SA long ago.
3.The line is drawn by the ANC, not well educated people.

samsam 10/6/2009 7:58:32 AM
What a hell of rubbish, hellbent, is FEDENTIA BOSS well connected to the ruling party, was SAAMBOU BOSSES well connected to the ruling party, was Andre Viljoen connected to the ruling party. Polygamy is my culture, what an insult to my Const rights, sies, who are the people doing corruption isnt your Univ grads, politicians are not everything in govt you fool, govt dept is made of different Units/Components/etc made of those graduates of yours, do you think the CFO is a politician, jeees.

Kolobe 10/6/2009 7:58:53 AM
pathetic article...all you people do is whine about JM. write an article about terreblanch.there has never been a better governm,ent than the ANC.not that it is the best one could get.firstly its a democratically elected one so before the ANC this country was a banana republic.whites never whined about the apartheid government...now they oud mouths..pure hypocrisy.dont know what is it you learn from the dutch reformed church when concious is not part of your lives.

Zizo 10/6/2009 8:03:43 AM
Is south africa in crisis? I don't think so. Crime is the issue in the country, you are combining irrelevant issues on your article. Why do you need graduates to help, do graduates campaign during elections or they are hired by the government to deliver to the public. If you going to judge the country by using malema's utterances, then you are just like him. You little hypocrites makes me sick when you always referring to the past 15 years of democracy, what's 15 years? the old regime could not the change the lives of black people in their 300 years tenure. When the ruling party implement corrective measures, they are being called racists and anti-whites. White people's behaviour drags transformation and its progress. My friend quintin, if you think the country is going, then how do you explain overseas investors grabbing any opportunity to plant in south africa.

Atac 10/6/2009 8:04:26 AM
Although i agree with your ideas & ideals, lets face it what you and most of SA wants will not happen in the near future.

For now though is something does not work the very educated will burn or break it down cause according to them that is how you solve a problem.

Down the Drain 10/6/2009 8:05:04 AM
The answer to your question is that educated and dedicated people are being "mushroomed" by corrupt (across the race board) officials that only care to line their own pockets and not be interested at all fulfilling core mandates or proposed projects to improve citizens living standards. Report them for fraud, corruption, nepotism etc. and you certainly will be marginalized.

Our particular "director" spend less than 5% time at his office - sad part that is the general situation in most departments.

Investigate any department's traveling budget - if someone can manage to stop the traveling frenzy (even just for one year)a large portion of that futile money can be used to attain skilled people, address growing health and housing shortages.

Some of us do try, but the service delivery could have been so much better if corrupt official could have simply be removed from the public system.

IandI@Quintin 10/6/2009 8:06:10 AM
Animal Farm.That's what it is. I would not work for the govt cause they pay peanuts, unless you are a DG or Minister. You know what you get when you pay peanuts..

@Zizo 10/6/2009 8:14:56 AM
Crime is the problem. Totally. But, why should I go to jail, if shabir gets out? Why should I be faithful to my wife, if jz cheats? Why should I not take a bribe, if politicians do it all the time? Why shouldnt I steal, if politicians dont go to jail for it? Why should I respect another skin colour if juju can say anything he wants to about me? **** runs downhill. And our politicians are fat people.

AJ @ Zizo 10/6/2009 8:16:08 AM
What do you keep referring to 300 years - that is a rubbish figure. And 15 years in an advanced technological fully industrialised time is the same as 300 years was back then. Have you seen what some countries have done in a few years? Stop making excuses.

AJ @ Zizo 10/6/2009 8:18:11 AM
If you misunderstood my comment let me put it this way. The Nat's marginalised black people for 42 years, you guys marginalised yourselves for the other 260.

MDZ 10/6/2009 8:18:59 AM
I`m a young 20 something year old black male.I graduated with a Honours Degree not long ago from a local University.I`m working in a local government institution in Mpumalanga.Honestly,i love my job BUT the inefficiency,sturbon nature of the older generation (struggle comrades) of officials and politicians make it difficult to apply any theoretical knowledge.The environment is hostile for real growth both personally and for the municipality.Twenty years from now,the government institutions will be filled with the 21st graduates and real work will be done.Until then,the little we do goes a long way towards community development.There is hope for S.A. and I`m here to stay to make it happen.Anyone with me?

Wisdom 10/6/2009 8:19:29 AM
Another article where the actions are condemned and it is turned into a racial slur! Grow up!

GT 10/6/2009 8:21:33 AM
I will NEVER understand how "educated" Africans will accept mediocrity the way they do. Perhaps it's by design that they're so blind ...

thysdj 10/6/2009 8:34:57 AM
What am I doing to contribute to South Africa??? I pay my taxes. And as a tax paying South African Citizen I expect, no I DEMAND that the Government Service use my hard earned Taxes to deliver services, not only to myself, but also to my fellow citizens who needs it more than I do. I further DEMAND that my hard earned Taxes be spent in a way that will uplift society and NOT be stolen by corrupt officials to line their own pockets. I expect ALL Government workers to earn their pay in an ethical manner, deliver the services they are supposed to and to expose those amongst them who do not do their jobs and steal my taxes. We Tax Payers are the ones who pay your salaries, so we have the right to demand that from you.

Koos Venter @ Kolobe 10/6/2009 8:35:23 AM
"whites never whined about the apartheid government" WHAT? That is what your racist, propaganda spreading ANC wants you to think. Have you got any idea how many whites were against apartheid. You are a blind idiot!!

Kapstok 10/6/2009 8:36:56 AM
Scary, all the ANC posters immediately bash white people on any criticism of the ruling party or government. Are you all incapable of winning a constructive argument based on the facts or merits of the article? - if service delivery collapses it will not matter what colour you are we will all suffer the consequences. If every argument is null & void because the ANC racists will have you believe that race determines everything them maybe taxes should be applied along racial lines. I cannot accept that a person’s opinion is wrong simply because of his colour or perceived political allegiance. Pathetic racists blame whites because they cannot construct a reasonable argument on the discussion at hand. .

Ronnie 10/6/2009 8:39:01 AM
When will the South African populace realise that the current ANC (and its value system, if such exists), is not the same as the ANC of pre 1994, which unflinchingly fought for the freedom of the masses ?? Now, sadly, they're just a bunch of untouchable thugs.

alan 10/6/2009 8:39:30 AM
Why is it that when someone writes an intelligent article about the very real problems facing South Africa at present, people like Monyobe and Kolobe never answer the facts presented but immediately pull out the old apartheid card. Now guys, come to the party and answer these questions truthfully: Have or have not the ANC given jobs to pals? Has these not been a dreadful waste of money in the entities governed by the ANC? Is not corruption rife in government, including tenders? Have not almost all ANC municipalities received audits that show there has been dishonesty? Is not the health service now far worse than it was in 1993? One could go on and on, but please answer these questions directly for a start.

M 10/6/2009 8:43:33 AM
The answer is, there are none. I am well qualified, but I would never, ever think of working for the state simply because I would be surrounded by racists that where promoted or/and employed because of some score card. Nobody wants to do work while others just sit around doing nothing. Usually those that are well qualified are well motivated and want to work in teams that can easily be motivated or are already motivated. South Africans in the public sector are extremely lazy.

Amazed 10/6/2009 8:45:01 AM
In another 300 years they will sing the same song! They cannot see or grasp the reality. When all is said and done, they will simply return to their shacks, kraals or whatever and carry on with their subsistance living. Maybe in another 1000 years another intelligent force will return, build up the country, economy, etc. and loose it again to the ants!!!

shawn 10/6/2009 8:47:00 AM
@Governement worker LOL u fool u cannot even spell the name of ur own employer WOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO VIVA SA

Have you ever run this querry past you pine brains ?Why did people not complain on how apartheid government ran the country ? Duuh maybe because everythig worked , No crime , decent infrastructure to name a few. Glock

Richard 10/6/2009 8:52:00 AM
You blame the graduates, who put these idiots in power in the first place? Concentrate on educating the voters and breaking down the blind loyalty mentality, then maybe things will change.

M 10/6/2009 8:53:26 AM
@Kolobe: So its ok for Julius Malema to make racist comments but not for Terreblanch? This is why no rainbow nation can ever exist, because the majority of South Africans are racists and don't even know it, just like you, little piggy.

@Governement worker 10/6/2009 8:56:16 AM
How about pay 20 grand a month tax and employ 10 people that the anc actually promised jobs! Should I come do your job as well ? The only ting lazier than a government employe is a rock !!Willie Griesel

@kolobe 10/6/2009 8:57:20 AM
there was nothing to whine about when it was apartheid.

bench-warmer 10/6/2009 8:57:29 AM
you and i have something in common, we are both benchwarmers.

David 10/6/2009 8:58:01 AM
Quinton, you have just proven that you like to blab on about nothing really. I work for Gov and I believe I'm well educated. The problem in the public sector is that if a decision needs to be made, it is not just one person but a couple of people that have to sign of a proposal. Another area of concern is that the private sector, when dealing with gov (tenders etc) dont seem to mind when they get hand outs, and not only BEE deals go to BEE firms! No doubt, there's serious short comings but please dont act as if you can do any better single handedly! As the other posts suggest, Why not come up with sollutions? Is that to tough a ask for you bud? By the way, I am WHITE!

@Kolobe, Monyobi and friends 10/6/2009 9:01:33 AM
I think that the most important event in the "new" SA's history is the one most ignored by the government & largely forgotten by whites. In the March referendum of 1992 on a turnout of 85%. 68% of WHITE voters unequivocally decided to end apartheid & support the reforms instigated by F.W de Klerk. Why? Because they saw apartheid for what it was, an unjust & unfair system. This country was “liberated” from within by whites as well as blacks. Of course you may be brainwashed to believe some other claptrap spewed out by the revolutionaries but the facts remain . . .

Andre 10/6/2009 9:05:45 AM
O Zizo, if you think people are rushing to "plant" in SA then think again. When you in Europe and UK all you ever hear of is crime and corruption. You live in cloud cuckoo land my friend. People are getting their money out as quickly as they can so they dont end up in the Nothern neighbours mess. Wake up.

Biza 10/6/2009 9:08:13 AM
Yet another letter based on an opinion supported by a bunch of irrelevant/unrelated points. I won't even reply

Laura 10/6/2009 9:16:09 AM
Good for you @ Zizo. America is still blaming it's slavery even after 350 odd years of so called freedom. There were white faces that stood up against the Apartheid government we did not all condone Apartheid! "If you continue look to the past you cannot see the future"

Cistas 10/6/2009 9:17:25 AM
Quintin,Quintin ,Quintin. Where will I have the time to do all that. I need my daily manicures ,pedicures and massages. Uncle JZ will look after the rest. We're all in it for the money as one clever contributor has said

Thato 10/6/2009 9:18:43 AM
It seems like our country will finanlly heal.Everybody letting their emotions out.We cannot stay angry & bitter forever.One worrying thing though is SA culture calling everyone "idiots" " "cronies" etc - shows lack of Emotional Intelligence & that is what our Graduates need both in Private 7 Public Sector.But eventually,We'll all heal.

Exlover 10/6/2009 9:19:17 AM
Really now. I just think the bigest problem in this country is the few white people who think they are the answer to everything. How do you say a black graduate from Wits demanded degree, but a white graduate got his or her degree on hard work. This is so not on. I just hope all these few white racists can listen to 5FM in the morning, just to hear how much that team try to bring SA together.

Adrian@Biza 10/6/2009 9:21:13 AM
Nobody asked you to read or reply, so get back to work moron!!!

@bizo , but you just did

GeorGe @David 10/6/2009 9:25:50 AM
So David - you are well educated - in which language? If it happens to be English then you"sign off a proposal" -not 'of'. Is this English too (to - your spelling) tough for you bud? Yea - I am also white with a std 8 but I do know a little more about tenses and the differences between the "two to too" and "of and off" than the so-called educated on this forum! English as she is spoke duh!

Government worker@the the morons 10/6/2009 9:25:58 AM
Have you 2 fools heard of spelling errors!!!

MAS 10/6/2009 9:26:43 AM
I was a white studeny in 1992 and couldn't wait to vote for a new SA!! The referendum was a turning point - we were PROUD to vote for a democratic SA! Wish I could say the same for all the voters at the last election!! Did you vote for what you truly believe is best for your country, family and self ... or did you just see skin colour ... as usual?? We voted against skin colour ... can you say the same?? GRADUATED SOUTH AFRICAN MOM

Trinnie 10/6/2009 9:27:08 AM
@Zizo
Why do you think overseas investors invest in a country - to build it up? No, making money and raping a country of its natural resources is their game. Remember colonialism? Nothing is new.
@Manyobi
When you refer to the 'you' and 'me' mentality it shows that, as yet, there can be no togetherness in building up our country. For your information there were many educated and religious people who did not agree with or vote for apartheid. You obviously have tunnel vision and it's hampering your growth.
@MDZ - Congratulations on your achievements! We need many more youth with your intelligence and dedication. Keep up the standards you have set.

fisher 10/6/2009 9:35:27 AM
What positive contribution has an African ever made to the world or this continent? ie inventions, technical advancements, medical research etc

@Monyobi 10/6/2009 9:36:34 AM
Monyobi - respect is EARNED, not a given. How does one respect a government that lines their own pockets and drives around in R1m cars whilst their "people" struggle to survive? Aren't these the ver people the ANC "struggled" for? Catch a wake up and smell the garbage....

Biza @Beans 10/6/2009 9:43:26 AM
Commenting differs from replying. And spell my name right tu. Its just 4 letters

Luke 10/6/2009 9:43:45 AM

rokovich 10/6/2009 9:45:16 AM

Q1:I'm here - working at Government. And I can assure you that there is a lot of good things happening, and a harsh view taken on corruption. Q2: No, not blind - sometimes overwhelmed by the size of the challenge ahead. Q3: Draw the line - whats that? If you work for government you work here because you want to make a difference. Look at SARS 15 years ago and the institution it is today...the rest of GOV will get there.

Blinkers 10/6/2009 9:54:40 AM
@Kolobe. Did someone hack your name and is publishing on your behalf or have you sniffed too many whatevers and now lost a few braincells. Where is your insight and desire to change things for the better. Govs got its challenges - we are contending with HUMAN NATURE - to enrich self - nothing to do with color. There are white and black people who come here everyday to chat to friends, drink GOV coffee and browse the web..and then there are others, black and white..who come here and work their behinds off to make a difference...and they DO.

jd@MDZ 10/6/2009 9:54:49 AM
Is it not possible for people like yourself in government that have the same stance to form an internal non political organisation and present your frustrations and opinions as a collected group. I imagine that could be very helpful to a guy like Trevor Manuel.

Tumelo 10/6/2009 10:00:36 AM
Its strange that the formerly advantaged claim ignorance about Apartheid, that they did not benefit and it was not their fault. But, when an opportunity presents itself; they then recall how there was no crime during apartheid and everything worked well. That is truly patronising. How do you claim you were not there but recall how a paradise it was? Continue playing your mind games hypocrites and think that we are amused by your pepertual theatrics, one thing is certain though; we will govern this country the way we want to and the sooner you live with that fact the better.

Government worker@the the morons 10/6/2009 10:01:42 AM

SARS was privatised, if we privatised government and let Sol Kersner run it, it would work to,except, the currently advantaged will burn all the good stuff down

@TUMELO 10/6/2009 10:30:54 AM
Please govern the country well - here's a sense of what it governing could be governing - (Rulers or Guardians) — those who are intelligent, rational, self-controlled, in love with wisdom, well suited to make decisions for the community. These correspond to the "reason" part of the soul and are very few.

You deluded fools, you sit there and support a government that is slowly but surely destroying this country whilst filling their pockets. All in the name of apartheid

Anon1 10/6/2009 10:52:23 AM
We all actually work for the government 7-8 months a year. If one takes personal tax, VAT, rates and taxes, capital gains tax, fuel levies, etc, etc then that makes up 60% of your salary (for those who actually pay tax). Why ask me and everyone else what they are doing, government employees are paid to do a job that they are not doing. Its the same as I would ask my employer what they are doing to do my job. WTF, I would be fired on the spot.

@Tumelo 10/6/2009 10:53:45 AM
Let me make it clear for you.Back in the day their was no crime , decent infracture, 10111 worked , you could go to a government hopsital for treatment to name a few. Yes there was bad stuff happening that we did not agree with and that is why it changed.Government instututions are now open to all BUT please show me one that is working. Do you have running water now >? Do you have garbage removal now ? Do you have electricity now ? Can your children go to a public pool now ? Is there any public toilet that is working ? You are free to use all these things that you where not allowed to in apartehid but ALL those things turned into shit to say it politely. Now what was gained ?Do you get the picture ? Glock Is it realy such a big issue to want a working government please anwer me that ?

where is everyone? in the private sector where people are recognised based on their skills level, where they are appreciated! in govevernment you get employed if you have a cousin as a city manager, who also happens to have a standard five!! you hear government complain about skill shortage and stuff, and you ask yourself how come there is so much skill in the private sector!! how can I have a manager with a standard eight, and not only that but no management skills whatsoever when I spent five years at varsity studying and spend every day learning about new stuff!! Not a channce!!

Wow. Judging from the comments on this page,
people's IQ's are dropping more and more every freaking day.

Jay 10/6/2009 11:59:42 AM
They may have the credentials on paper that they have University degrees, but they can be easily bought which I am 100% sure that that is the case. Majority of our anc figureheads all claim to have at least 2 degrees but cant even speak English (Universal Language), I would love to see their matric results, oh wait we have. Our president did not even get past primary school. Malema had G's and H's(all on standard grade) in his and his best mark was pedi (1st language) which he got an amazing E for. There is promlem no1, our country is being run by a bunch of people with the same IQ's as what I flush down every morning (no 2's)!!

Dont forget these people are praying hard to see our govt collapsing, they are jealous to see a black man successful, weeks ago they were disappointed by SAAs profit, whereas they were sure they got us, shame on them. ZIZO to correct you apartheid took 342yrs, they stood with guns to make sure no black person goes to schools, today they complain of crime, thats the consequence of racism, if people were educated there would be no crime, they are shy to say they failed SAAMBOU, FIDENTIA Grps

M 10/6/2009 12:51:53 PM
@samsam: So why are your OWN people burning down everything they can when it comes to your "successful black man" running the local govt? Maybe because of lack of service delivery? So if everything is going so well, why are they doing this? Maybe because they are getting less service now than during apartheid? Me thinks so...

only me 10/6/2009 1:59:08 PM
@ samsam. Now you are not talking the truth. My father was one, that built schools for the blacks on the farm – they burn it down faster than he could built it – “they stood with guns to make sure no black person goes to schools,” indeed.. If you believe this, where do all the so called doctors, professors, est. got their degrees? Wow man, with what do you think? Get up from you chair, so that you “brains” can get air

Sinudeity @samsam 10/6/2009 6:33:08 PM
Fidentia is actually a great example. Cause it shows how a corrupt individual, can bring a company to its knees. Just like, a few corrupt individuals are doing to the ANC.

Quinton,they are all having woodwork lessons from Julius, hence they are currently unavailable.

Oh wake up and smell the coffee. High posts in government are all given to chums and family memebers. The educated report to these dingalings which does not help when it comes to service delivery. These so called individuals in position of power cannot make a decision without first checking with their sponsor, who generally have different agendas to what should or should not e done. I was one of these so called educated individuals reporting to a dingaling who clearly was out of his depth. I gave up when I realised that no matter waht I said or did, the dingaling in power was either going to take a lifetime to agree to it, or was going to ignore it on whatever basis. Change the positions of power across the entire spectrum to peole who actually have the knowledge and you will see radical changes in this country and yes... even service delivery

@MDZ: thanks so much for that! I read this site to try keep up with news and opinions at home. Honestly, there are days when the hate and ignorance on here makes me wonder whether there will still be a home to come back to when the degree is done. Good to know our generation is just waiting to get stuck in and sort the problems out :)
