Bafana finally on right track?

by
2008-11-20 08:21

Ndumiso Khoza, News24 User

I have been very critical over the performance of Bafana Bafana in the last couple of months. Like all things, it is hard to accept any mediocracy from anything South African. And it is not even worth arguing that the South African national team performance has been a bit dismal in recent history.

This was not the case in the Nelson Mandela Challenge against the "Indomitable Lions" at the Olympia Park on Wednesday. After a run of successive results in their previous three games, many of us were encouraged by Bafana's run of form and believed that they had indeed finally turned the corner.

I was one of the people who really wished that this was true and that our ever disappointing team was finally getting back to the glorious winning days. I thought that it was a little premature getting excited too soon as I felt like we had not really been tested by opposition that was strong enough to warrant genuine veneration from the general soccer fraternity.

We were close against teams like Nigeria in the 2010 World Cup Qualifiers, but until we actually won against a formidable team, many would still wonder whether South Africa was ready to launch a serious threat come World Cup 2010 or even a reasonable performance in the upcoming 2009 Confederations Cup.

This win was not expected and something definitely welcomed, but more importantly it was great watching our national soccer team play with the kind of confidence and determination that warrants respect from critics like me as we once again see them play with the kind of passion and pride that is always expected of them.

South African supporters are the hardest to please, yet at the same time most of us are happy enough to know that our team did everything possible and literally played their hearts out for a win. And for the first time in long time we witnessed a hunger and will to win from Bafana that has not been witnessed in quite some time.

We should undoubtedly not be complacent in thinking that we are a 100% ready for the World Cup as yet. There is still a lot of work ahead of us, but for once I feel that we might finally be on the right track. There a number of basics that we have to work on like our ball possession and defending free kicks and corners, but I am mighty glad to see the boys finally scoring goals again. A fourth consecutive win is no small feat and deserves some acknowledgement from our part.

I am proud to at least see Bafana holding their own against the Cameroonians and showing that they are capable of competing at this high level. There will be arguments that our opposition lacked the likes of Samuel Eto'o and Geremi, but there will be no denying the fact that we beat the number one team in Africa and a team some 60 places above us in the FIFA World Rankings.

With the Cameroon match now behind us, let us now hope that the team can build from such an inspiring performance and make sure that the world will finally sit back and notice that South Africa might have something to say when the World Cup finally hits our shores. Our morale is now boosted and we hope that "the boys" will not disappoint us any further.

I don't expect them to win every match, but to at least keep delivering performances like this week in and week out. I am sure that if they do that, then we will all be happy knowing that they performed to the best of their abilities and played with their hearts on their sleeves. That is all we can ever expect from them.

No I did not watch the game. BUT I am glad that they are coming around. Good luck in the future.

jannie 11/20/2008 8:43:13 AM
Given Bafana's world ranking of 80 [http://www.fifa.com/worldfootball/ranking/lastranking/gender=m/fullranking.html#confederation=0&rank=175&page=2], they did good. You must learn to walk before you can run. Hopejully they will play tougher opposition to get ready for the world cup

OB1 11/20/2008 8:46:07 AM
Lets hope they have finally turned the corner. Well done Bafana!

Me 11/20/2008 8:48:31 AM
The guys have improved. They were able to come from 2-2 to make it 3-2. Well done boys.

Len van Heerden 11/20/2008 8:48:43 AM
This was a very good attacking performance. Without being negative, the defensive frailities worry me. furthermore, Dikgacoa is a much better player than Sibaya. I am hoping we can find a place for Nassif Morris too, but WEll Done!!!

MysticBoer 11/20/2008 8:48:49 AM
We have so many talented footballers in this country; hopefully this win will motivate them even more for the World Cup!!! Well done boys!!

clifton 11/20/2008 8:49:36 AM
Cup, for Benni's father. Isn't it true that when you have something to fight for , then you deliver the best. Please Safa, Danny, Sponsors and coach, keep the boy's hungry and focussed and you will see....... Well done !

KLZ 11/20/2008 8:53:37 AM
The first thing I noticed about Bafana bafana is how confident they looked before the game. I watched them playing really good soccer and they gave a good performance relatively. Bafana you made us proud, keep it up and we are behind you 100%

VLS 11/20/2008 8:54:36 AM
Another encouraging display. There is sill a lot of work to do but we're on the right track and we're starting to see what the core of the team will look like for the World Cup. Can all the news24 bloggers who know nothing about local soccer please refrain from posting their usual garbage on this subject.

The Truth 11/20/2008 8:54:49 AM
They played extremely well last night and crafted some very good goals. The defence is still a bit worrying though, especially since we let a two goal lead slip.Could anyone tell us how this win against Cameroon will lift us in the FIFA rankings, considering that we have now beaten a team ranked 60 places above us? That should count for a few ranking points.

Kenroid 11/20/2008 8:55:32 AM
I am glad that our soccer team is looking a lot better....although we can't assume that this is the turning point - it definately bodes well!!! Good luck guys!!!

Bongani Zondi 11/20/2008 8:58:34 AM
Bafana Bafana made the whole nation proud with their great performance. Well done boys!!! Everything looks promising as we move closer to the Confederations and the World Cup. We will rally being you all the way.

Just Me 11/20/2008 8:59:53 AM
.... now we need to work on the broadcasting.

keyser 11/20/2008 9:00:29 AM
they played like the bafana i used to know then one step at a time

Rafiki 11/20/2008 9:02:24 AM
Well done to the team. I have watched the game and i wished i was at Royal Bafokeng stadium. The coach is doing his job. The sustitutes made were excellent. Great strategy!!

Tension 11/20/2008 9:02:57 AM
I must say that Bafana are right on track and we must give them a pat on the back for a good perfomance against The Indomitable Lions. They showed a will to compete for everything in this game. They closed the space very well and they were very much confident on the ball. They did not lose position easily.Well done to Santana, his technical team and the boys they did us proud.

Les-Maada 11/20/2008 9:02:59 AM
Now lets here what the special News24 Bok supporters anti- Bafana brigade had to say!!Well done to the Proteas,Boks & bafana, you've certainly made my Month!

SimonP 11/20/2008 9:05:26 AM
Lets be realistic and not expect too much come 2010. Bafana will do well to get through the first round.

A Proud Black South African 11/20/2008 9:07:04 AM
Like i always coment about my beloved Chiefs, i don't expect them to win every game but i need to feel proud about their performance even in defeat. Had we lost the game yesterday i was still going to give them praise for their gutsy performance. Lastly, we now need to work on that defence, its like the Chiefs' one. Overall, i am a happy Bafana supporter.

Stryker 11/20/2008 9:09:14 AM
Well done Bafana Bafana - pretty decent game for a change. I really enjoyed it.

Marcel 11/20/2008 9:11:00 AM
when it comes to Bafana, and I'm hard on them too. We've been pathetic in the past, but the road to recovery has to start somewhere. So yeah, well done guys. Yeah yeah I know, one swallow and all that. But a good spectacle last night, long may the improvements continue.

Concerned 11/20/2008 9:12:36 AM
I think they played well Ndumiso. I hope this encourages the supporters to start going to the stadiums and support the boys. I have one wish though, can the supporters please leave the vuvuzela behind. It sucks ! I prefer the sound of the drum. It's so soothing

sara 11/20/2008 9:12:41 AM
Is a tad late! Would have been nice if they played like that while it mattered.

Sabelo Mtshali 11/20/2008 9:16:33 AM
So the boys won against the "Indomitable Lions", congrats to that!!! Ayeye Africa the real definaition of Bafana Bafana was proven yesterday as the boys were fast on the pitch that the Cameroonians Coach had to blame it on the Visa's, YAH NEH!!!! all i can say is that the boys did the country proud now, thelikes of modise and Parker it's good to succed but don't let the success get into your heads!!! Besides that if you guys keep winning Santana will soon be speaking English excellently. Ayoba

Xokzin 11/20/2008 9:17:22 AM
All we need is fix the basics like you said and consistency. Hopefully Santana doesn't leave us high dry like his fellow country man.

Fred 11/20/2008 9:20:50 AM
Watched the game, well done to the team at long last some passion on display, however could not fail to notice that the protea was on the right hand side of the jersy safa badge over the heart. This needs to be adressed by the powers that be protea should be over the heart for all sporting codes.

AJ 11/20/2008 9:21:49 AM
Was chuffed to hear the result onthe radio this morning. Lets hope it renews their confidence, as that breeds success like nothing else! Good result against a good team! Well done Bafana!

OB1 11/20/2008 9:23:53 AM
Yeah, I agree, those vuvuzelas sound like dying donkeys letting out there last squeal. Drums and singing would sound so much better!

Masti 11/20/2008 9:30:13 AM
gud match...I wudn't say that they've turned the corner just yet...

kgomotso 11/20/2008 9:31:32 AM
Pulsating perfomance. The boys played their heart out. I still believe the name Bafana Bafana is not inspiring enough it should go.

Mendjos 11/20/2008 9:32:31 AM
...played well, but there is a room for improvement.

Johan 11/20/2008 9:32:41 AM
Sigh....if someone is critical about the Bafana Bafana it does not mean they are anti-Bafana. Is it so hard to understand...they seem to be on the comeback trial...so good luck to them

Mtshepino 11/20/2008 9:32:55 AM
I think its safe to say we are on the right track. As for Teko Modise, the boy is good!!

GeePmb 11/20/2008 9:33:59 AM
I am happy our boys won and can place their right hands on their SAFA logo above their hearts with pride. Let's not get ahead of ourselves here, we need consistent wins against full strength top sides before we can say that we have truly turned the corner.

T Man 11/20/2008 9:36:27 AM
i still think that there is alot of work to be done.i am not yet convinced. as bafana defece and striking force still need to be sharpened up. just imagine if we can play with the likes of Germany and or Italy they will definelty hammer us if we do not get our defense in order. nevertheless, i must be encouraged that we ended our year on a high note.

tshepo 11/20/2008 9:36:32 AM
the emotions it delivers when we scored the winning game was second to none. Unlike some sports where internationals are round robin matches for the same countries, this is indeed a game of billions. Congrats to Bafana Bafana.

ZOLANI 11/20/2008 9:45:03 AM
good stuff bafana, keep it up, nice Protea on your shirts to

Smanga Zulu 11/20/2008 9:45:07 AM
I watched the whole game with my girlfriend who is NOT a football fan, but even she thought Bafana are on the rise. It was so refreshing to watch beautiful football from Bafana. We played very well, we were tactically superior and we only conceded two set piece goals... which is an indication that our defense was awake. We needed the wining mentality and I think now we have it...

Harris 11/20/2008 9:48:57 AM
I AM A BOK SUPPORTER, BUT ALSO A SOUTH AFRICAN. BAFANA DID US PROUD, WELL DONE! I HOPE IT IS THE START OF MUCH GREATER THINGS TO COME.

Fan 11/20/2008 9:51:22 AM
I am still not imressed with our play. We lack dimension and depth. Chabalala is very slow, Teko Modise has a low convertion rate when taking long range shots(yesterday an exeption). All in all our wins have been because we just hog the ball at the back, slowly move it forward with no clear threat and hope for a goal. Against much more complete oppositions (USA,Brazil,Italy ...) we will get out classed.

Crazy Boy 11/20/2008 9:52:42 AM
Vuvuzela its our soccer Culture Guys so if it makes you uncomfortable you rather stay at home and don't go to stadiums. We don't like Sound of drums becuase they are just boring.

Chris 11/20/2008 9:55:05 AM
I would live to say well done to the guys and the Coach they did well. On the other hand SAFA please treat our visitors right give them tickets and Visas and a nice hotel to stay. This is the emage u want to promote for the world cup then I say U Suck SAFA

Mike F 11/20/2008 9:55:57 AM
The guys are getting things together very nicely. But my huge concern is our vulnerability at set pieces. 1stly, Ithumemleng Khune (goalkeeper) is not up to standard for international soccer. The goalkeeper doesn't take control in the goal area. Contrast that with the confidence displayed by the Cameroon goal minder in his in-goal area. Both Cameroon goals were scored from set pieces with our poor goalie gone awol from the action. I'm sure we have a strong, tall and vocal keeper who commands control and confidence in the box. Otherwise, a very good win. I can now wear my Bafana jersey once more, with pride. Viva Bafana viva.

revolver 11/20/2008 10:08:44 AM
The team played well as a unit although there are still defensive errors here and there. I agree with LV Heerden that Dikgacoi should have played ahead of Sibaya in the central midfield. Bafana should have been far ahead has Carlos Parreira not left, remember it takes time to understand the coach's philosophy, hence we struggled a bit after Parreira left.

Mams 11/20/2008 10:09:02 AM
Bafana Bafana are top i mean i thought we were going to loose that game looking at the cameroon those guys are giants comparing to our little players but they did it. my only worry is a goalkeeper Khune lost focus and Brian is dead(i am sundowns fan but he is dead)

Walter 11/20/2008 10:09:43 AM
I wuold like to say nothing is for ever in the World ,so you have make your Contry proud,Thanks guys.

Squash 11/20/2008 10:18:00 AM
I agree with you, we conceeded a soft goal (2nd). Plus Morris need to replace our overated captain at the back. I have nothing against Sibaya but the hunger for success and the form of Dikgacoi must put him first ahead of Sibaya. Well done boyz.

tumza 11/20/2008 10:22:10 AM
I didnt think i cud finish waching the game all by myself but because of the good display by the boys I managed. Ag man, i can say i'm proudly South African. My only concern is Itumeleng (he is still an amateur, internationally, i'm not impressed and i am a Chief supporter) & Macbeth (he cud have been substituted earlier, Dikgacoi is far better than him)

Beaver 11/20/2008 10:51:57 AM
Firstly well-done to Bafana, that was an exceptional performance. Everyone, bar perhaps Davids and Mokoena, came to the party yesterday. It's refreshing to see a guy like Modise dictate a game like he did yesterday. Now getting back to my heading, the Cameroonian coach should be fined for that disgraceful whinge after the game. Talk about a sore loser. How is it SAFA's fault that his stars didn't pitch? And what gives him the right to air that diatribe on the aftermatch interview? Sies man.

Mike F 11/20/2008 10:53:26 AM
Size does count, also in soccer. Our guys need to beef up in the gym otherwise these tall strong athletic players from Africa will always beat us to the tackles, especially when competing for 50-50 balls. Remember the Afcon class of 1996? The hard men of SA soccer, Andre Arendse, Neil Tovey, Lucas Radebe, Mark Fish, Eric Tinkler, Philemon Masinga, Shaun Bartlett, here was strength and skill and style. Lets learn from these Bafana heroes.
