Marketing 'controls you'

by Craig XII
2009-11-03 15:05

Just look at the amount of people who hold psychological degrees in the field of marketing, the amount of psychological content in marketing syllabi and the use of these psychological techniques in the day to day conceptualisation of adverts - doesn't that seem weird to you?

Marketing is the practice of punting a product better than the next, using choice words, celebrity faces and good ol' marketing tricks to come across that it's product is the best.

Most of the accepted psychology theories at the moment rely heavily on the role of learning in the development of the individual, particularly observational learning.

Observational learning (also known as vicarious learning, social learning, modelling, or monkey see, monkey do) is a type of learning that occurs as a function of observing, retaining and replicating new behaviour executed by others.

Advertising companies make use of this knowledge of human behaviour everyday, that's why we see celebrities in almost every advert, that's why we see ads relating to society (the more similar the modeller of the behaviour to you, or who you want to be - the more likely you are to accept the behaviour they display and further reproduce those behaviours).

Yes, we all have choice, we are all free to make those choices but, what about those people that don't or can't care about choice? Who only choose to conform (as is evident in our school going children and those individuals with low self esteems), or the individuals who can't make informed decisions (like kids).

I don't know about anyone else but it disturbs me to think that we have a society today that behaves (on the basis of what they know, what they have learnt) to the standards set by the box in their living room, to the lines in a newspaper and to the sexy lingerie model punting water on a billboard. Heck, even our eating speed is regulated by these nuts - think about the music restaurants play, faster the music the faster you eat, we are not impervious to manipulation!

The use of children in ads is also becoming virulent. Children, here forth known as the "teen market" or "developing adult niche", have become the new unexplored terrain of the opinion makers/marketers/advertisers. Next time you watch TV, count the amount of ads with kids - it's scary.

Kids can't make informed choices, not just yet, and the same goes for the majority of the population whose mind is not so much  on how much it costs or what benefits it has but rather, what impetus it adds to their social standing and self esteem.

Point is, if we truly want a society that is free, it should be based on a culture of  complete knowledge to all, (kind of like what is happening with that HIPPO insurance quote system).

Only then can we really discern what the best product in its niche is and what merely enculturation of society towards conformism is.

If we all use Neutrogena like Vannessa Hudgens maybe we can also look pretty too mummy.

Mummy doesn't know where she went wrong... Do you?

it's not called the idiot box for nothing..

Juan 11/3/2009 3:16:23 PM
Yes, and now we are even being CHARGED EXTRA TAX to stare at this box.

Greg 11/3/2009 3:19:32 PM
The marketing on TV is very subtle, sublime and full of deceit. The Good ol' Book says that you become what you look upon... or in evolutionary terms Monkey see, Monkey do...

Thato 11/3/2009 3:21:43 PM
It is true..and it can be annoying. That is why last year prior to election time I decided that No one watches News or any political documentary. In my view it matters now to watch anything political from opposition parties, but they are not forthcoming. So I'll continue to watch TopGear.

EXLOVER 11/3/2009 3:27:00 PM
I say nationalise marketing. Everything you do is marketing and you do not need need tv or psychology. when you walk in the street with you boy friend that is marketing. The proper definition of marketing is as follows: Marketing is anything that will remind in your mind for a long period. Janson from the Bloem University marketed his brand by letting those Reitz boys free, that was marketing. when you cry in public that is tear marketing.

Fred Basset 11/3/2009 3:27:11 PM
100% correct.

and as we slowly become more stupid, we become more easily manipulated......and so the big wheel turns

Golum 11/3/2009 3:28:31 PM
Is it just our imagination or are the adverts louder that the normal programs? As if we cannot hear. We don't watch much TV, but when we do and the adverts come on we press the mute button, or switch over to our cctv camera to check who's coming to steal our TV.

Talitha 11/3/2009 3:34:43 PM
@ Frad B
That's also the reason people can't spell any more - reading down the drain

davemc 11/3/2009 3:42:21 PM
A TV advert break is now 5 minutes long, every 5 minutes. That's 30 minutes every hour. Even on pay-tv. It's insane.

Biza 11/3/2009 3:42:51 PM
Haven't owned a tv in four years. I'm happier than before

Bob 11/3/2009 3:47:13 PM
@ Talitha... I think a 160 character limit and the cost of SMSs has a bit to do with that one too.

Ginger @ Golum 11/3/2009 3:48:48 PM
Your hearing is 100% correct and you are right.

Adrian@Biza 11/3/2009 3:50:14 PM
Why? Couldnt find a stolen plasma to buy???

eleanor 11/3/2009 3:53:51 PM
If I say I have never been in a gym, never been in a beauty parlour, can`t stand music, love being alone, do not do takeaway eating, buy the cheapest cellphone on the market etc, I am met with blank stares. Why ? Because I do not fit in and therein lies the rub. Everybody has a need to fit in and for that conformity is necessary. Conformity is also the easy way out. Conformity also makes it easier for marketers to sell. It is also called brainwashing. There is no need to think, one only has to follow (Like sheep)The burden of having to think lessens the burden and effort of having to use the brain about the choices to make.

Ghost in the Machine 11/3/2009 4:02:10 PM
Most modern advertising technique owes a huge debt of gratitude to the Nazi propaganda genius Joseph Goebbels...

eleanor 11/3/2009 4:04:38 PM
It is also called brainwashing. Conforming is easy as it lessens the burden and effort of using the brain to make decisions and choices that can be of benefit to the individual. Marketers love the herd effect. Become a sheep and just follow. One is taught from early on that one needs to be one of the crowd, be a team person, work together. Give your co-operation! The result? Not being able to think for oneself and make own decisions!

lloyd macklin 11/3/2009 4:08:18 PM
Craig. It's 'number' of people and not 'amount'. This article is absolute drivel and demonstrates a total lack of understanding of the basics of marketing. As for the responses indicating agreement!!

GaryH 11/3/2009 4:08:21 PM
Jeez Jaun, you never miss a beat, you are priceless! I am however not sure if you are demented or not! Golum, you are correct, when an ad comes on it seems to blare!

cj 11/3/2009 4:23:53 PM
I record everything I want to see on PVR and fast forward through the ads. Haven't watched an ad on TV for years. Good article though.

edwin 11/3/2009 4:25:47 PM
Buy an PVR decoder and record your favourite programs. When you watch it and it comes to ad breaks just fast forward.

Chucky 11/3/2009 4:40:23 PM
Craig, apart from being an extremely badly written little post, this betrays extreme naivety. If people had free will and an education, and recognized that everything advertising stands for is wicked and destructive, the world economy would grind to a halt. Everything you own, everything that makes your life comfortable, your whole world view, is funded by a gigantic global middle class whose only job is to buy stuff it doesn't need, to keep pumping money around the giant bloated global body. We need idiots buying XBoxes, just as we need uneducated poor people to do the dirty work that we don't want to. It's horrible, and I wish the world wasn't like that - that somehow we could all be clever and rich, and robots could do all our chores for us - but that's the modern world. So wise up, smell the roses, and understand how you are part of a machine that CANNOT change unless you want to spend the rest of your life picking up the pieces. Kisses and good luck with the whole earnest thing.

@Lloyd Macklin - Craig XII 11/3/2009 4:45:07 PM
Correction "Number of people" - thanks.

Lloyd, try to see it both ways, I do not contend that every ad is brainwash material, but in all honesty, think about the role of any visual material and you will see, most formulas for adverts, TV programs, heck even movies - they are designed in such a way that you are compelled to identify with them.
I have the required qualifications to make such a statement - I understand marketing better than most...
Are you Joey, Chandler or Ross? Hmmm, maybe Monica?

michael 11/3/2009 4:58:11 PM
Firstly - Adrian keep your silly comments to yourself. You are one of those people who just don't belong in a sociaty like ours!
Secondly - Some people refer to this as 'the basics of marketing' - I think it's who can stop just short of telling an outright lie.
@lloyd macklin - are you in "marketing'?
Its all about who can dupe the (often unsuspecting) consumer into spending his money on their product by creating illusions.

LJE@ loud ads 11/3/2009 4:58:37 PM
Ads are louder because when do you get up to go to the kitchen or the bathroom? During ad breaks. They put it louder so you can still hear the jingle even when you're outside the room. Marketing is sneaky...

kaliel 11/3/2009 5:21:10 PM
What most of these idot advertisers don't realise is that most people with serious money or education do not fall for all these corny thinly guised advertisements and the cheesy media that supports the whole industry and they are never going to get our money this way. I have a DSTV subscription and all I ever watch is the odd good movie (rare),doccie and major sporting events - the PVr ff's through all the ads and for the rest I read, yes read and take myself off to the cinema noveau. The death of mindless advertising and tacky mass media will be a sweet day indeed - am sure this wonderful recession is doing it's bit to kill off this disgusting industry. Anyone noticed how few irritating adverts there are on the radio these days?

jason 11/3/2009 5:58:50 PM
Marketing? On TV? Avoid all that hogwash like I do - change channels regularly.

WhyVos 11/3/2009 6:30:48 PM
Watch the kids programs and see how they are being indoctrinated. But, then aren't we all very aware of what we drive, where we live, where we shop? Everybody wants to be in the right circles, at school they use the term peer pressure, and the companies use that weakness in us. If we can stand tall and be less concerned what the next guy thinks, there wont be a place for these TV adverts.

Actually all Goebells did was become an expert on the work of Edward Louis Bernays, who is commonly attributed as the founder of mass psycology (ie propoganda)

The next purchase is the one that will make you truly happy and to be cool you need to conform ! Duh....

Poppie 11/4/2009 6:16:21 AM
I agree with Lloyd Macklin. This is absolute drivel - a conspiracy theory at best. And you'll find that most people in marketing have business degrees, not psychology degrees.

Lou 11/4/2009 6:42:11 AM
The ads are loader and have been for a long time. Advertising is not the only marketing/promotional tools and it is not just for commercial products. The media is filled with biased concepts and ideas around lifestyle, consumption, politics, etc. If your only source if info is the mainstream media, newspapers, magazines, television and the usual sites on the internet, then you have a seriously scewed dataset about the world. The biggest disservice to ourselves and our children is letting things happen because we do not understand what is really going on. It is essential to at least read different news sources. Check out a bok called Flat Earth News by Nick Davies.

This is because nobody else would hire them. Most marketing people are fairly useless and depend on sales and ops to save the day.

Eles 11/4/2009 7:50:03 AM
I disagree because I can honestly say I do not do or purchase anything I don't already want to. Consider beauty cream ads - it is a glamourous celebrity applying the cream in full make-up that doesn't make me rush out and buy the product or the weight loss ads with thin people advertising it. Most teens will want whatever is considered fashion because it is a stage that they go through it doesn't necessarily last whilst some people will spend their whole lives trying to one up everyone else. I don't believe in peer pressure - that is for the weak. @ Golum ads are indeed louder because I suspect they realise ads for most people are loo and kitchen breaks.

Margareth 11/4/2009 7:52:36 AM
True. From when my children were small, I drilled them on how the media works with you brain. They are now school going, and are very cynical when watching ads.

ZION@CRAIG 11/4/2009 8:27:47 AM
Most educated people should be able to detect marketing hype and avoid it. Intelligent people can intuitively sense that the product is not as advertised. Aclassical case we all know is drumming up support for a political party - You play on the fears of the electorate by employing their background and sentiments. Use of children, as you point out, is a definite no-no. Just plain untruths are legion-drive your 4x4 over the bundus as the advert tells you to: you will not be compensated. Open your eyes first and think rationally before acting. Test and trial offers should always be approached with suspicion.

Dr Steve Brule 11/4/2009 10:19:54 AM
what gets me is for eg. Tiger Woods advertizing cologne, I have no idea what the man smells like so why would I want to buy it, would it make my swing better?, by all means he can endorse golf clubs that makes sense. People are sheep, and sheep need a shepherd.

BLACKsoWHAT!Talitha 11/4/2009 10:33:26 AM
I see you can't spell Fred...

Koochie 11/4/2009 12:10:58 PM
It doesn't matter, psychology degree or not, if you are a poep who will believe the ad, then you deserve what you get. I was a child to, and never believed this nonsense, don't blame the advertisers, blame people who like being sheep. And Juan, that law hasn't been passed yet.

James 11/4/2009 1:11:49 PM
Reacting to an ad is personal choice. You are not going to buy something if it doesn't meet a need, either real or psychological, in your life. Ads are great for those coffee breaks, going to the loo without missing the movie and watching the movie on the other channel. They should stagger the ads so that there is always a movie on. Just think you could watch two complete movies in the time you would normally watch one.

MACH1000 11/4/2009 1:14:00 PM
True True. But. How did you hear about "The Hippo". If someone told you about it, where did they hear about it? On this page alone I counted 14 ads.

Tasmee Hylkema 11/4/2009 1:30:16 PM
I think you must distinguish between marketing and advertising. Marketing really is about assessing what the needs of a particular group of people are, and then doing the calculations to decide whether it can be provided and still make a profit. I am currently completing a degree in marketing and have to disagree with the writer. I agree that many companies are unethical with their advertising, but marketing fulfills a vital function in our daily lives. It has an impact on you from the time you wake up, brush your teeth with your brand of toothpaste, eat your brand of cereal, wear a particular brand of clothes, drive your brand of car, in fact marketing has changed society. It is still freedom of choice, and should not be confused with an aspect of marketing, which is advertising.

Tasmee Hylkema 11/4/2009 3:41:05 PM
Most marketing people ensure that the farmer who produces milk and other produce has a meduim in which to ensure that the general public become aware of his product, that a means of delivering the product to consumers is possible at a price that satisfies both the public and is able to sustain the farmer, thereby also stimulating the economy, so that you can simply pick up the product at your convenience at your nearest store..........unless you would just prefer to buy a cow and farm in your back yard!!
