Bling BMW: A slap in our faces

"Ask Minister Siphiwe Nyanda what government officials do in a recession..."

What does communications minister Siphiwe Nyanda do in the middle of a recession, where jobs are being lost, houses and cars are being repossessed by the thousand, most industries are in negative growth and we are all being told to watch our spending and tighten our belts?

He goes out and buys, not one, but two top of the range luxury German cars with every extra under the sun attached, thus figuratively speaking running around beltless and shameless.

I sit hear confused and irritated asking myself - what world do our ministers live in? In reality we are being encouraged to save and watch our spending. The government on the other hand, being the well-rounded role models they are, are living like rock stars with an endless supply of funds to buy luxury cars fit for heads of state in most rich first world countries.

While we are grappling with the worst global recession in history our ignorant ministers are rushing out to luxury stores and buying like there is no tomorrow.  Eskom, a state owned parastatal, is raising tariffs by 33%; the country is being lambasted by a wave of strikes demanding extra wages, everything is getting more expensive, house hold debt is at its highest in recorded history, and car sales are in negative growth along with most other sales of goods.

Guidelines are flawed

The prescribed guidelines for ministerial purchases are fundamentally flawed and its current practices are not in line with the current economic trends. How on earth can you justify spending R2.5m on two cars when you as a government are pleading poverty, raising taxes, paying your doctors pittances, not supplying your hospitals with the basic equipment used to save lives to name but a few on a very long list?

Minster, I have a friend who was on a flight from Johannesburg to Durban after the final rugby test match between SA and the Lions. One of our senior rugby players and his family were spotted by cabin crew sitting in economy class with the rest of the common man. He and his family were invited to move into business class and he refused point blank saying "he was very happy where he was".

I mention this purely to make a point that you don't have to take everything that is prescribed to you or your misdirected sense of entitlement deems necessary. This form of behaviour should be a lesson to you and all your "bling bling" cronies in government who are rewarding yourselves before you have even started doing your job. At the moment, the way things are going you should be riding a bicycle to the office or making use of our excellent public transport like everyone else.

Minister I challenge you to inform the South African tax-paying public who bought these cars for you out of our hard earned taxes what ceramic surround for controls, ambient interior lighting, adaptive headlights, high beam assist, a three-spoke, leather-covered steering wheel, a R23 400 "rear-seat entertainment" system and a R5 600 "high-gloss satin chrome" paint job help you do your job?

Maybe I am just ignorant but these extras are a slap in our faces. What is wrong with a standard 320d BMW? Most people only dream of owning a 3 series BMW, but you lift your nose up at it and go for the top of the range. Why do you need a 750i BMW?

I will tell you why, because to you it's all about image, image at the cost of all else, as long as you look good in your designer suits, ministerial mansions, and luxury German cars everything else can fall to pieces. This form of behaviour has no place in a third-world country where more than half your population are below the bread line.

No guilt?

Minister, on a more personal level, how do you sleep at night knowing you just spent R2.5m on two cars, while so many South Africans can't even afford a roof over their heads? Do you justify your actions with bureaucratic guidelines and red tape?

Shame on you and every other government official spending our taxes quicker than we can earn them. Every day you hear about another minister blowing the bank on some or other exorbitant spending spree or their officials running elaborate fraudulent schemes.

Mr Jacob Zuma, the so called "president of the people" is also slipping into the cracks of gluttonous and unscrupulous spending with a new government which is clearly out of control and has no idea about the fundamental difference between money and wealth.

Let it be known that you were voted in by the people, the same people who are struggling to make ends meet on a monthly basis. It is time for you and your government to humble yourselves and come down to our level. You are after all our employees; we pay your salaries and fit the bills for all of this reckless spending that has become the norm in the ANC.

Lastly, to everyone who voted for the ANC. The next time you are on walking or driving on one of our roads and a 750i BMW with ceramic surround  controls, ambient interior lighting, adaptive headlights, high beam assist a three-spoke, leather-covered steering wheel, a R23 400 "rear-seat entertainment" system and a R5 600 "high-gloss satin chrome" paint job screams past you at 180km/h throwing dust and rubber in your face, leaving your tiny insignificant image in its rear camera view, wipe the dust out of your eyes and take a look around and remember who you voted for. After all it's your vote that gives them the blank cheque.

These officials should be held accountable for this blatant abuse of power and money. It's no wonder we are such an angry nation, our own government is misappropriating our taxes and hiding behind laws they created to protect their taste for the finest luxuries money can buy.

As the late and great Winston Churchill said, "you can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all the people all of the time."  We are not fools, so next time you pop into your luxury store and buy some unnecessary item, know we are watching you, and we will not stop until you stop.

Wayne, a well composed piece - congrats! The problem is that the buffoon your refer to probably does not know how to read and will miss all the good points you raise. And as to the supporters of the misguided follower of "prescribed guidelines for ministerial purchases" there is no hope.... They will continue to take insult after insult and vote for the same useless and ineffective bunch. Sad, really sad.

Cynic 7/18/2009 10:56:51 AM
Superb writing.. now watch the pinheads comment.

Edgar 7/18/2009 10:57:48 AM
What an excellent piece of work. Congratulations !!!! If only we can make posters of this and advertise to the masses what their 'comrades' have entitled themselves to.

Andre 7/18/2009 11:00:00 AM
The reasoning would be: I drive a very significant car, therefore I must be a very significant person - successful, competent and important in every way. Minister, shame on you.

veryconcerened 7/18/2009 11:00:45 AM
Wayne Well said just imagine the image they are sending out to the youth We as south africans have to suffer to pay our well earned money to taxes just so the presidet which has an army for a family and all his wives can live a life of luxury. This article that you have written is going to be handed out by the thousand in the different languages to all the voters that voted anc to show them what the so called government is doing with the money that jz said would go towards housing edecation etc ANC ARE THE BIGGEST LIARS AND THE WORST PART OF IT IS THEY DONT CARE ABUSE OF THE SYSTEM

Sipho 7/18/2009 11:24:43 AM
In Kenya, the guidelines have been changed so that ministers can only purchase a car with a maximum of a 1.8 litre engine. The politicians have revised the guidelines to try and keep government spending under control while the people are suffering in the tough economic climate. Why does the SA government not adjust the guidelines to show that they actually care about the people of SA? Do they care about us?

Noc 7/18/2009 11:28:27 AM
Good points, good article - I just wish that the correct group of eyes were able to see it. Alas, it's because of the ANC's handling of the telecomms industry that people who voted the incompetents into power can't afford a phone line & internet access. Sad.

Wes 7/18/2009 11:30:31 AM
It's tough not to agree with this peice. Such a purchase in these times makes litle sense. The Minister may be entitled to such perks, but taking them is another matter. Two good 3 Series BWM's would serve just as well.

notsurprised 7/18/2009 11:30:44 AM
Be honest here.....is anyone surprised by this?? This "fatcat" has just summarised what the new "leadership: of our country are all about....all show and no go (except in his 750i)!!
Then again, what can you expect when he has a department head (aka JZ) who barely has Std 6.........
No wonder this country has a brain drain....

Tom 1 7/18/2009 11:36:32 AM
Agree, completely idiotic,I live in France Ministers drive around in normal cars, think Zarkozy has a citroen C5 and this is one of the wealthiest economies in the world,I would say have a grading system starting at a ford bantam and maximun a BMW 520 if you perform in your minesterial position you get BMW 520 , and if you do not perform you drive a bantam, ford would make a killing with this proposal,GOOD ATRICLE,well done Wayne G

Realist 7/18/2009 11:39:27 AM
An excellent article and it hits the nail on the head. However what the ANC cronies will say to this is that it his RIGHT to buy these cars and if we don't like it we should leave the country..... That seems to be their answer to everything nowadays. As for the masses who voted, what do they care, they got their lovely yellow T shirts......
Lets see what Poliodonkey, Mzi and Hafdead have to say about this.

Stef 7/18/2009 11:43:54 AM
this is exactly why I voted DA

jw 7/18/2009 11:47:51 AM
So correct,i Fully agree. The problem is that the Next time WE encounter the disHonerable minister on OUR public roads his WELL trained bodygaurds WILL kill US if WE do Not make way for his Glorious convoy that is travelling at 180 km speeds in a country Not at war but at peace.

Mr Toyota Tazz 7/18/2009 11:50:56 AM
Wayne I feel your pain and frankly it seems that a hell of a lot of people are gripped by the lack of principle and example portrayed by our leadership within the ANC...I think the problem starts from a cultural thing and probably apartheid which belies our leaderships lack of real confidence which makes them feel that material wealth and representation will rub off on their ability and perception of competence...which we all know doesn't cut the mustard!!!We can all see through it but the majority are still caught up in the perception of what wealth means...I am starting to think that the official opposition ie the DA are toothless or the ANC have no entrenched their presence in every sphere of life both private and public that there we are really dictated by autocracy which makes it impossible to make any meaningful change to the greedy political landscape!!! I think the DA should feel our pain and become more vociferous!!!

Sean 7/18/2009 11:53:24 AM
Well written Wayne. I do so agree with you.
@ Veryconcerned I do hope you will get this letter sent around.
And JZ with R60.000 shower. Make me sick.

AndyJo 7/18/2009 11:56:07 AM
Excellent article Wayne, unfortunately the intended message will not deter these Private Bankers(Wankers) from further wanton misuse of OUR Tax deposits into their perceived Private Banks..
How about our LayZ leader JZ, spending R50m on an innner pallisade fence @ his KZN residence which he will only visit possibly 3 times annually.
There is a new BEE game being promoted by the ANC (Awful Naughty Criminals) to see who can misuse the most Taxpayers funds & create the most negative publicity.

Mpho R 7/18/2009 11:57:02 AM
I fully agree with the writer that what Nyanda did is very insentive to the current economic realities. You expect people who occupy such high offices not to just do something because guidelines say they can do it, they need to demonstrate that they have brown matter between their ears. This guy is not fit to be occupying the position he does. We are bound to see this kind of bufoonish behaviour from executives of companies as well.

Mike Ambassador 7/18/2009 11:57:32 AM
I was amased to hear that after 5 years or 120 000km a ministerial car can be changed. I work for the goverment and the ambulance I drive to save people now has 560 000 plus KM on the clock, I have to risk my life everyday at speed to try and save ppl who are injured in a vehicle that is way past it's best ...... I just have to shake my head in wonder at the arrogance or the present goverment ...... for the ppl my Butt!!!

Rabble Rouser 7/18/2009 12:01:09 PM
Life is unfair! Get used to it! Politicians will always look after themselves first. It can be argued that it is the will of the people. They voted these self serving politicians into power. And then one reads about the construction workers at the 2010 Stadiums grovelling to earning a miserable R 2,400 per month. All this garbage about halving poverty by 2014 is just to appease the gullible, poverty stricken masses, who will always stay poor and in a shack. My feeling is one of apathy. I just ignore the plight of the poor. It is not my problem and I just don't care.

Realist 7/18/2009 12:06:12 PM
All for the king and nothing for the paupers. This is the African communal system at it's very best, with our tax money.

alan 7/18/2009 12:09:10 PM
It's the truth! The problem is that it needs to be read by the people that read the Sun and the Sowetan. All these people living in grinding poverty continue to put ANC fatcats in power so they can live the lifestyles of multimillionaires. I have to ask myself: is this just the African way? Do people have such inferiority complexes that they have to suround themselves with hugely expensive bling in order to look good? Or are there enough people in ANC leadership with good enough self-esteem to say 'Enough' - we need to set an example for those living below the breadline', and settle for sensible means of transport and a cap on individual spending. And let's not even get started on the fraud and corruption perpetrated by the ANC, of which we hear more and more about every day.

Fred 7/18/2009 12:13:03 PM
Why does this suprise you? We have the biggest and best Gravy Train in the world, with the greediest leaders ever seen. This country is in a downward spiral that is getting faster by the day. Compare how much work this particular minister does compared to a construction worker who earns R2,500pm. Something is wrong, and nothing in the next 5 yeas can stop the rot while these maniacs are in power. Problem is - the same sheep will vote hem in again next time, so HOW CAN WE EVER WIN ?????

Peekay 7/18/2009 12:14:11 PM
Excellent piece of writing! But be prepared to be labelled "Recist" and a "pessimist" and "un-patriotic" by the baffons of this forum who go by the names of: "myself" "halftwit" "polytonki" and the likes.

It has been mentioned that these purchases were within budget and boundries, but the question still remains and Wayne has categorically put it in simple terms: with all the doom and gloom going on at the moment was it so necessary to buy TWO top end motor vehicles, why not purchase a top of the range 5 series for the town you will spend most of your time and maybe a 3 series for the other town. Was it so necessary to go so big? We as tax payers, forget about your voters who live in shacks with no running fresh water or electricity who do not contribute to this as they do not pay tax, but us as tax payers and most of us are struggling to make ends meet due to the current recession, we deserve an explanation on why the purchase had to be so extravagant, why must we do all the work, pay our taxes, and only ever dream of "oneday" purchasing 1 750 bmw in our life, you go and purchase 2!!! That is a huge slap in our faces. I don't care if it was budgeted for or within the boundries, Zooma's inauguration party was also budgeted for, but the morally correct thing to do is to set an example, put more money into helping the poor of this country and getting service delivery on track and having less lavish parties and driving less lavish cars. YOU ALL STINK ANC MINISTERS AND PRESIDENT, YOU ALL STINK OF GREED AND CORRUPTION. YOU ARE ALL ROTTON TO THE CORE. I HOPE YOU ALL BATTLE TO SLEEP AT NIGHT...

Fred 7/18/2009 12:15:52 PM
I think our minister thought he was doing his Mandela Day thing - providing employment for BMW workers !!!!!! Only problem is - did he think ???

Peekay 7/18/2009 12:28:30 PM
Only tax payers should be allowed to vote as we are the ones funding goverment and only tax payers should have a say how our funds are being spent, that is the only way we could ever win. DA, you might want to look at seeing if this is a possibility?

Sinudeity 7/18/2009 12:29:54 PM
Yeah, after Ivy, which did NOTHING for telecoms in South Africa, left, I was hoping, South African internet would be cheaper. Seems, its going to be another, whats in it for me, mp in communications. Wonder if he has 2 tv licenses for those entertainment unit. Zille drives a Prius in ct and a Polo in gauteng.

Great article - as so many comments stated: Siphiwe Nyanda and perhaps even Jacob Zuma will never read this! Between their airtickets, expensive cars and cream cakes dipped in expensive whiskey they cannot hear the cries of the masses anymore. And if they read I would suggest to read more on history - maybe lessons on the French revolution would help! Arggggh I am so dissapointed in our so called leaders.

Brian 7/18/2009 1:01:26 PM
Well said, Wayne. The justification on the news the other day that the cars that were 'inherited' were either 5 years old, or had a speedo reading of 120,000km is no excuse to spend such an outrageous sum of money. One doesn't deny these ministers a decent mode of transport, but hell there is a limit. What is of concern in this country is that the very people who continue voting for the ANC, are the very ones that are suffering and yet they, are the rest of the populous have to sit back and watch these greedy fatcats enrich themselves at every turn.

Joannevdm 7/18/2009 1:01:29 PM
Well done Wayne G. I salute you for having the guts to state what I, for one would want to say but could never do it as eloquantly as you just did! Heres the thing: we all working our butts off to eek out a decent living, because, if you dont work you dont eat. What with electricity tariffs, the price of food going up, its a smack in the tax payers faces and they seem to think we stupid. And no this is not one of those issues where a significant person drives a significant car, rather an issue where Mr Siphiwe Nyanda has been voted in by the people and supposedly for the people. I view it quite seriously as it is a calling to servanthood, where he is expected to serve and not extort us out of our hardearned cash.

The issue is not about being unpatriotic but its an issue that irks and addles intelligent people who see and understand what is really going on.

One only has to drive into Mfuleni, Gugs, Langa ... to see the hardship on peoples faces and gait. The poorest of the poor who have so much faith in their leaders they voted for.

This is not about party policitics, oh the DA and the Anc either, its about having the emotional intelligence to know right from wrong. This man callously flaunts his "newly acquired money", thats not even his and then has the disgrace to flaunt it under the noses of the masses who dont know where their next meal is going to come from!

This is not an act of Ubuntu, it an arrogant act of assuming powers that this man obviously thinks he has.

Sis.

mukesh 7/18/2009 1:21:42 PM
Fantastic Article.

George Orwell's Animal Farm comes to mind. I long to see a cabinet minister making a stand against these unnecessary purchases and donating monies to the purchase of police vans which is sooo much needed in the area I live i.e. Midrand.

In Jonathan Jansen's Thurday's Column in the times; he reckons that there was a rector (methinks TUT) that gave part of his increase towards the bursary fund at the university. This is ubuntu we are striving for.

I hope I'm saying this correctly "Panzie fat cats panzie".

BEE The Corrupt 7/18/2009 1:22:20 PM
The government seems to forget they are doing a serviCe to the people of this country, instead they are filling their pockets with the tax payers money. The ANC are a corrupt, arrogant and incompetent bunch who don't care about anybody except themself. They will not stop until they have emptied all the money coffers. Viva Bob, Viva ANC!!

jorene 7/19/2009 11:11:36 AM
I think it is now time for the Taxpayers/Consumers to be heard. With all the strikes going on, it is about time the Taxpayers/Consumers also do something about this greediness!!!!!!!

Stanley 7/19/2009 11:11:42 AM
Good article. I fully agree, why do you need 2 cars, as if one was not enough, and at that price, some people don’t earn that in a lifetime, come on, give back to the people minister. But I suppose Image is the way to go, who cares about the homeless…

Brian 7/19/2009 11:35:20 AM
Well done Wayne - this is an absolute disgrace especially conidering the state of the ambulances. He should donate them, or the proceeds, to the emergency services!!

Ria 7/19/2009 11:35:41 AM
What a pleasure to read such a lucid piece of writing. The reason for the lack of service delivery by the ANC politicians and ministers, and the gravy train, lies in our system of representation. Because members of parliament do not represent constituencies as individuals, they have come to believe that they are accountable to no one. They are assured of their cushy jobs just by cudling up to the ANC elite. They don't have to perform their jobs well or even at all. If a member of parliament and especially a minister, were accountable to a specific constituency he or she would have to perform well in order to be re-elected in the following election. He or she would have to go out there and mingle with their constituents to gain their favour, to explain certain of their actions (such as purchasing luxury cars instead of providing funds for the upkeep of the local clinic/schools/roads etc. or providing housing for the poor. At the same time those fat cats would be reminded of just how some of their constituents struggle to make ends meet and of who are paying their fat salaries. The fat cats believe that they are still living in a tribal society, where leaders are determined by heredity (or perhaps put there by God). They totally fail to understand the concept of democracy in which elected leaders are voted in by the people and are therefore the servants of the people.

piet 7/19/2009 12:19:11 PM
The tax office does not deserve our hard earned money! Thanks to all you f...g idiots that keep voting ANC. Piet.

Hopeful! 7/19/2009 12:50:31 PM
Wayne, this is a very well written article that clearly states all the grievances that we as citizens of SA are currently experiencing. The question now is, will Zuma and his ministers take heed of this?? Their extravagant behavious is an insult and a big "up yours" to every single citizen of this country. What else can we as citizens do to get our message across to them? There must be something we can do now rather than waiting for the next election...

amber 7/19/2009 12:55:12 PM
What Mr Nyandeni did is really surprising,I really wonder where all the money came from. I am wondering though if the writer of this piece is angry at this act or at the fact that the ANC is in power or that the Africans are in power or just about everything when he says we are an angry country?

Sipho 7/19/2009 12:59:07 PM
Typical Africa! This is it ladies and gentlmen.
This is why no African state has made a success of its independence and why South Africa will crumble.
Africans do not know what it takes to add value in a western society yet demand the privleges regardless. I empaphise, coming from nothing ones sense of value and well being is manifested in the physical due to a regressed passed so there mind cannot understand business, work, maintanence, planning all they can see is fancy cars, clothes and power. Eish wena we are all .....

Ultimate Realist 7/19/2009 1:17:08 PM
I wish everyone who is elegible to vote could read this article and forget about party politics and just think realistically for once. This kind of news should be highlighed so that the masses out there can get a grasp of what is happening to tax payer money and maybe come to there senses. This kind of flagrant abuse of power to spend as if he's a king and not a government employee has to stop. There are way too few taxpayers and far too many fat cats in government to sustain. It has to stop!!!!!!!!

Wayne 7/19/2009 1:32:26 PM
Where are all the ANC supporters now. I would love to hear them justify this one.

Punk27 7/19/2009 1:43:59 PM
Its quite OK. Nowadays when a beggar asks for money at the robot, I tell him to wait for the shiny new 750iL coming up behind me. I tell him that the owner of the BMW will give him his food for the day.

Fonz 7/19/2009 1:55:28 PM
This man should be fired. Jacob Zuma should appoint a commission to investigate him. What a disgrace. What an insult to all of us....
Out you go......

taurus 7/19/2009 2:22:19 PM
Very good piece spoiled by cheap politicking.

@Peekay 7/19/2009 2:48:19 PM
Excellent point. I would take it a step further and say that the weight of a person's vote is dependent on how much tax they pay. If you pay R10 000 tax, you get one vote, if you pay R20 000, you get two. Let the people who are paying for this country decide where their money goes, whatever their skin colour is.

Clinton 7/19/2009 2:51:34 PM
Bravo Wayne G!!! A brilliant article, nothing could be more true than what you have stated here. Michael Bloomberg the current mayor of New York has chosen to receive $1 of his $195,000.00 salary that he is fully entitled to. What image is the communications minister so worried about portraying, he really isn't all that important to be quite honest.

thandi 7/19/2009 3:42:11 PM
It is a pity that this article will not be read by these ANC cronies. Julius Nyerere was a President of Tanzania and was living in an ordinary house. Thabo Mbeki did not want an increament on his salary but with the Zumanoids they are reading every small print of the book to justify their actions. They made all the promises you can think and the people are still living in poverty.
thandi- UK

Joe 7/19/2009 3:57:01 PM
You are asking too much if you are asking the government fat-cats to care about the man on the street. It's just not going to happen. Just shut up and pay your taxes, ok?

sigh 7/19/2009 4:10:18 PM
That's why I've stopped giving money to the beggars who line up at every traffic light in Sandton.

I already pay thousands a month in taxes. If those governing this country make use of the funds to live extravagantly, instead of putting the money back into the community, whose fault is it? Not mine, I didn't vote for the ANC...Chances are these same beggars voted these people into power, in the first place, so they now need to live with the consequences.

Rascal 7/19/2009 7:14:40 PM
Its quite simple.Boycott paying paye, vat and tax returns and most forms of tax.Do this until the ANC stops the spending unnecessary on 750i Beemers and mostly do this to force them to tackle crime and getting a decent health care system running.Viva Democracy.

Ri 7/19/2009 7:21:03 PM
Listen........ Absolute silence from the pro-ANC quarter.

Kaltie 7/19/2009 7:31:27 PM
This is the result of an unintellect voting corpse, voting the unintellect into power. The masses won't read this article and will not be told about it by the ANC. It is therefor the responsibility of DA and COPE to gather this information, and to inform the masses. But COPE just had one of the BIG spenders (ex deputy president 4.5 mil Boeing) join their ranks, so do they get the picture? The way in which criminal charges were dropped, in a case where three top courts of justice found a corrupt relationship did exist between two persons, is still fresh in our minds.

Albert 7/19/2009 7:36:29 PM
Wayne G,

I would love to meet you face to face, shake your hand and have your autograph. I'll also love for you to run for precidency, because you will have my vote, and the vote of so many other people.

This is by far the best article I have EVER read. I love it to bits. Thank you for standing up and making your voice heard. It's people like you that we need more of in South Africa.

I applaude you dear Sir. Well done, and don't stop watching them.

I HEREBY OFFICIALY CHALLENGE ANY OF THE NEWSPAPERS TO PUBLISH THIS ARTICLE ON IT'S FRONT PAGE. It's sad to know that you are to government controlled to actually do it.

Wayne, well written. I am getting sick and tired of all these S500's, ML's, 750's and Range Rover Sports that prance around; and you can be sure a larger than expected proportion of these belong to gravy-train politicians and hangers-on.

Sibabalwe 7/19/2009 10:11:21 PM
To become a minister do you need some post of qualification and if yes where can one receive such papers? Mr Malema has been making alot of sensible comments lately i'm yet to hear what he has to say about this. Does the minister know how far the 2.5 mil would've gone in educating south africans? Brilliant mr Wayne

Mike 7/19/2009 10:17:51 PM
Very well said Wayne. As with all the other responses, it really raises concern about the direction that SA is moving in. Do these people in power realise that they have given the poor hope and this had shown by the numbers that had turned up to vote. I suppose this was just another voting campaign. The people of SA have fought hardship for decades and are probably still in the same boat. I am currently based abroad and it was always the plan to bring my experience and expertise back to SA. The descision to return is becoming more difficult. Come on "leaders", take a step back and realise what you are doing to a great country with amazing people.

Alastair Grant 7/19/2009 10:21:13 PM
Hard to add anything that hasn't been said already, except perhaps this - the official car used by most government ministers and senior officials in India (the largest democracy in the world) is called the 'Ambassador'. It's actually a 1950's Morris Oxford, which has continued to be built near Calcutta for the last 50 years. It's also the standard taxi in New Delhi. I spoke to a very senior official there about her modest lifestyle - which extends to every aspect of her life - and she told me that Mahatma Gandhi preached modesty and restraint in everything, and that many powerful people there try to live by his tenet of service before self. She also told me there are exceptions, but the public take a very dim view of conspicuous consumption by those they are paying to serve their interests. I'd be interested to know what cars cabinet ministers in Botswana drive - it's the richest country, per capita, in Africa, and they strike me as far more honest and hardworking than our gang of leeches.

Grog_SA 7/19/2009 10:34:25 PM
A very well written piece capturing in essence what is wrong!

As a taxpayer (your employer minister), it is a slap to the face spending our money in such disregard considering our current economic climate. I have to bear the grunt of this recession and somehow still manage pay my employees and their wage increases to enable them to survive and somehow still try to stay head above the water barely managing and yet still pay exorbitant taxes which you go and blow on cars.

If government was managed like a big company providing services like it is suppose to do, it would have been bankrupt a long time ago as nobody would have used it.

Just an idea.

Tom Watson 7/19/2009 11:18:30 PM

Good on Obama for criticizing corruption and self enrichment by African leaders! Unfortunately it hasn't made an impact on this numnut....

Love Africa 7/19/2009 11:31:35 PM
2.5mil is how many low cost houses is that?
This is so the minister can drive to work and back and the spouse can drive to the shops and back?
I bet you they been given a car allowance that covers that. but not the insurance and oh yes we will be paying for those 25k services and tyres.

R/Bay 7/19/2009 11:54:29 PM
very angry that this minister has the arrogance do this kind of thing during a reccession, or are government ministers reccession proof. The people of this country are really to blame here because whatever these ministers do, the public will still vote for the ANC.We are always looking at the DA as a white threat that represents every rasist evil imaginable, and not just people like ourselves. We must take this as a lesson and vote DA next time around. President Obama reprimanded Africa well by saying that we need strong institutions and not strong leaders.

Jim Rockford 7/20/2009 12:41:21 AM

excellent writting, saw one of those BEE blocks in their fat new 750is passing me on the M3 CT the other day, seems those ANC cronies have been shopping a lot lately with BMW and other prestine German and British carmakers, as you note those "exreme fat cars" more on our roads, since Zuma took over the nation.
I guess though, the party will come to an end sooner or later, when all those of us have left the country, who is gonna pay the tax? ANC voters?

Rinus 7/20/2009 5:45:27 AM
Politicians are missing the point - they have been voted in to SERVE THE PEOPLE. I have heard someone say - "A country deserve the leader it has". Ouch

AJ 7/20/2009 6:28:22 AM
A lesson a lot of people have not learned (the minister being a good example) is: Juyst because you are entitled to something does not mean you should take it if you do not need it. I remeber in the UK my wife and I were entitled to a weekly child subsidy, but opted out because the 20 or 30 pounds was not going to make a difference to us. It's not being a martyr, it's about not wasting resources that could be better spent elsewhere. Simple (if you care that is).

glen 7/20/2009 6:38:07 AM
The ANC is not the people's party. The problem is the the same as in Zim. The people are intimadated to vote for them . They the ANC think they are bigger than GOD. .The only way is to stop paying taxes.

tibla 7/20/2009 7:10:53 AM
Wayne, what a piece, it does not matter what politicians say, one thing is for sure, these guys are cruel to the core, 2,5 million in times of recession and you quote ministerial handbook, what a pity, could'nt we live with what we have for now, is this the end moral judgement or better still human conscience,

t-PLUS 7/20/2009 7:11:03 AM
I think we have a problem of generalising everything in SA. we always try to link things even when there is no connection. in this instance there are many possibilities. this R2.5m is not a lot of money for a guy li S.N. if you simply calculate his earnings he could well personaly afford that type of a car. if we can check a car you are driving yourself might be in a range of 1/2 to 1m and no body has a problem with that. Lastly you must leave Zuma out of this unproven alergations of yours he has better things to do than watching what people are doing with their salaries. if you want us to have your respect you must do thorough research before you make such alergations.

Cry 7/20/2009 7:27:41 AM
I do not condone what Siphiwe Nyanda has done, however I the question of blaming the ANC, is uncalled for. Not so long ago Sbu Ndebele did the right thing ANC as he is by declining a gift or gifts from certain business people - I think most of the commets I have read this far, come from people who I worse than Siphiwe himself-What does the whole thing got to do with Yellow T-Shirts? Your reasoning is worse than someone who read the Sowetan and the Sun!

CJMENG 7/20/2009 7:33:22 AM

In the words of Joseph Welch at the McCarthy hearings.

"Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?"

Eles 7/20/2009 7:41:57 AM
Hear hear its called common sense except apparently common sense is not that common in SA! The middle class has been stretched beyond limits with very little people receiving increases this year, many retrenched and yet newly appointed ministers are already overspending. Why could he not acquire one vehicle? And top of the range is unnecessary. This is why I don't give to beggars anymore if the man on the street wants to vote in an inept corrupt incompetent party time after time that is his problem why should I struggling in the middle class continue to support them anymore. @ Toyota tazz I disagree re the apartheid thing I think the flash of wealth is a status symbol which the ministers think is owed to them despite the fact they have not yet proved themselves worthy consider the Swaziland king who has excessive wealth whilst his people starve - who actually respects him? I say again JZ had a golden opportunity to gain more respect and acknowledgement had he spent less on his inauguration and allocated funds for more worthwhile causes he could have had an excellent world class function at far less a cost (I wouldn't be surprised if some or other minister got a backhand on that contract). The problem with SA politics is that there are very few people there to make a difference - zero passion and commitment just on the gravy train. Anyone watch Carte Blanche last night - dlamini zuma does not inspire much confidence and neither does pandor.

Juan 7/20/2009 7:48:37 AM
And may I add, that even the poorest of poor had to pay for this, being VAT (also an state income)

Carole 7/20/2009 7:50:49 AM
A well-written exposure of our Govt's spending habits. It galls me to think that the leadership of our country don;t understand that leadership is serving the people. One more thought - look after those who pay taxes because without the taxes ......

Kishore 7/20/2009 7:57:40 AM
Wayne buddy - you forgot to mention the most important accessory - the tinted windows. The minister will be able to drive by the worst squalor that so many of our people live in without his conscience being affected. Marvelous eh Nyanda!

Nkosinathi 7/20/2009 7:57:48 AM
Wayne this is a superb piece.Well done.i hope the self centred minister gets to read this.Wayne it really hit me bad in my mind and heart to think that people that are suppossed to serve the public are serving their own gluttonous stomachs. For crying out loud this man has businesses that are doing well. Why did he not donate money and buy these cars from his businesses if he was truly a servant of the people.Well this is Africa where leaders are too selfish to even care.

kickerk 7/20/2009 8:00:55 AM
Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Maybe it's time that we look at the root of the problem. This kind of spending has been around for decades. The problem here is not the people, but the system Clearly the system is failing, and it has to fail. No matter who is in power, this type of unlawful behaviour will continue for as long as we follow and promote this system.
It's time to make changes, not with the people, but with what causes these people to behave in this sick manner. We can write letters till our ink is up, but nothing will change until the system fails and the people step in and take back what belongs to them.
The question is when?

VG 7/20/2009 8:24:12 AM
Wayne - well put. I couldn't believe it when I read the story. First, JZ increases the size of the cabinet, supposedly to improve service delivery, but at an additional cost of R1bn. Ok,well, let's give the guy the benefit of the doubt...but clearly the gravy train continues - with fresh gravy all the time it seems. As some have stated, just because you can, doesn't mean you should. In fact, a moratorium of car buying should be put in place for the next 10 years - enough already!

Pattie 7/20/2009 8:28:07 AM
What is insane is having two 'capital' cities in a country - legacy of days past but one that the present government chooses to keep. When you start estimating the costs of keeping two parliaments going you will be shocked what we are paying for. I never supported this in the apartheid years and I cannot support this madness now. Keep everything in Pretoria it will save us taxpayers billions.

t-PLUS you ignoramus! He did not buy the car out of his inflated salary - he bought it with tax-payers money. But then the vast majority of ANC supporters don't pay tax so what do they care. Since the last election I DO NOT under any circumstances give any charity (here I include the so called car guards) to anyone who may have voted for the ANC. Stuff that, if you are so stupid why should I hand out some of the hard-earned money (the little left which the government hasn't already stolen). How do I differentiate between ANC voter and Non-ANC voter? Duh, work that one out for your self! Statistics speak for themsleves.

Sinudeity @So 7/20/2009 8:51:47 AM
So, 'an executive that is paid well' in the PRIVATE sector. This minister is in the PUBLIC sector (He is South Africans servant). He is the NEW minister in communications, he makes a HUGE salary, for doing NOTHING (My internet is still of the most expensive in the world), AND, still uses tax payer money to buy himself 2x luxury vehicles. Wake the **** up buddy, and smell the INCOMPETENCE and the CORRUPTION. Everyone is STRUGGLING in the economic recession, except the politicians.

Andries 7/20/2009 8:57:38 AM
What did you expect. Constraint, empathy, wisdom? The most heartbreaking part of this story is that the ANC supporters will not be moved and inch by this. Multiply this irrational behaviour by a thousand and they will still vote for the ANC. Conclusion: Democracy does not work in Africa.

Jo-Anne 7/20/2009 9:01:37 AM
While I understand your outrage you seem to be under the impression that perks for government officials are limited to South Africa, or more specifically, the ANC. This is totally unfair. Government ministers the world over live well! Your implication that this is solely the transgression of the ANC smacks a bit of thinly-veiled racism. The bit about the rugby player doesn't help, of course. The average expense claim (i.e. over and above massive salaries) of an ordinary British MP in 2007 was equivalent to over R2million, and they are considered quite poorly paid by Eauropean standards. @ Kickerk - Marxist much? :)

What makes this spending even more tragic is that he the minister does not care a s..t what the people say or think. Its like breathing on arrogance while many are dying and pleading for shelter. His type does not lie awake because of the concience faktor.

A friend of mine works in the motor industry, and he is working a 4 day week, in order for his employer to keep costs down, and the politicians are buying top of the line????? Something is wrotten in the state of SA. Pity the politicians will never take heed of what their tax-paying populace thinks.

Wayne, you talk as if spending is a bad thing. Spending is what our economic system depends on. The rest of us should follow our minister's example and go out and spend. That will generate jobs and improve our economy. Our minister is creating jobs (by spending). Go out and buy stuff too instead of moaning about the rest of us doing our bit.

As a supporter of the ANC,I have to say I personally apologise to the poor masses who are neglected by our minister's when they make these purchases. This issue has always been a thorn in the flash of the ruling party. Mac Maharaj was also critical of the expenditure associated with government spending on official vehicles. It is about time that we rectify this issue by coming up with central policies that are going to control ministerial expenditure on vehicles. What is the significance of the chrome colour on the car, the entertainment system? Whose car is this, 50 Cent? Mr. Minister how have your actions empowered the ANC. Are we beginning to take advantage of Msholozi's kindness? Please Mr. Minister do the right thing and take at least one of the BMW's back to the dealership and let's put the money to better use. You have been in the wilderness for a while don't allow yourself to go back there just because of materialistic gains. Minister Chabani please rectify this it seems there people who are there for the same reasons we were against in the Mbeki era. Let no one underestimate their mandates, we said we will work for the poor and vulnerable so let us not increase their pain. Msholozi has been examplary by taking a public flight from Cape Town to Johannesburg. Minister's this is no time for unnecessary spending we cannot always protect you for the stupid and costly decisions you take.

SimonP 7/20/2009 10:37:15 AM
@Ikabot, he did not spend HIS money he spent OUR money that should be going towards infrastructure not personal cars. The minister is not helping the the economy he is helping HIMSELF.

MC 7/20/2009 10:44:33 AM
@Dave - the governement does have a fleet car system.

Anton 7/20/2009 10:45:17 AM
Well said Wayne! More of us need to take a stand against this sort of government abuse and arrogance. Having said that, I must take issue with your statement that the honourable Minister should make use of our "excellent public transport like everyone else". I don't know where you live Wayne, but here in Durban we have not had a functioning bus service for about 6 months, the trains are overcrowded, filthy and dangerous and I personally would not entrust my life to the kamikazi taxi drivers who I spend a substantial portion of my daily commute dodging. Excellent public transport? I think not. Perhaps if our Ministers, MP's MEC's MPP's, municipal councellor's, assorted Kings and chiefs and their fellow gravy-trainers stopped pillaging the national fiscus with their rapacious appetites for self-enrichment, the government might be able to afford a public transport system that is halfway decent."

Spiderman 7/20/2009 10:55:41 AM

The point is the guys don't think for the masses who voted them, we did not vote for you guys in parliament so that you can waste our resources, but so that you can utilize the resources at your disposal to make this country and its citizens better. It is not about you, but about the voters. Wayne, a thoughtful article, well written. To all readers out there, does anyone know how to go about having the minister challenged on this issue - I think it would be a worthwhile debate and I for one, as a taxpayer and "employer" would like to hear some answers.

Johncarlos @ Jennifer 7/20/2009 12:17:18 PM
Its the job of opposition parties to challenge such. This issue was actually raised by the DA, but was approved because it meets parliament requirements(which the DA itself was one of the main drafters)

Kyle 7/20/2009 1:00:03 PM
I see a businessman has gone to jail for failing to pay his taxes. 10 years, with 7 suspended. While I agree that tax offenders should be punished, government cannot expect us to be happy to pay for their multi million rand cars. In the article about this man, the authorities mentioned hospitals, schools teachers etc but not once the fact that his taxes were needed to buy expensive luxury german cars. Can we all go on a tax strike!?

Andries 7/20/2009 1:05:13 PM
In all honesty, what do you guys think is the right car for a minister to drive?

Rogue Trooper 7/20/2009 1:05:14 PM
No surprise here at all. To whomever said that 'it's simple' we should just stop paying our taxes and that would sort it out. Try it sometime and see what happens, you get jailed...you'll end up with 3 meals a day, clothing, a roof over your head, entertainment and the opportunity to educate yourself...hmmm on second thoughts maybe your idea isn't so cos then at least I'd see my tax money ACTUALLY working for me. Funny how the ANC faithful haven't commented here and the 3 that did clearly missed the point and just reinforce the attitude I have towards the majority of ANC supporters i.e. I do not suffer fools lightly and less when they have sheep mentality. I reckon that ALL government ministers should use public transport, send their kids to government schools, use government hospitals and live in the houses they are building for the people cos if they think that it's good enough for 'the people' of SA then it MUST be good enough for them, not so? I work in the pvt education system for a very well known pvt school group...in fact the largest in SA. Our fees are pretty high and we have had a matric pass rate of over 97% for the last decade and then some. We have a HUGE amount of government officials sending their kids to our schools and not government schools...why is that? Whenever we hear of government officials getting ill or having to be admitted to hospital it's always a private hospital and never a government hospital...why is that? They 'need' to buy expensive luxury cars instead of making use of the public transport system...why is that? They again 'need' very high housing allowances to rent houses cos they can't live in RDP houses...why is that? And if anybody answers that's it's because they hold positions of importance and have huge responsibilities running the country then you are either one of them or ANC voter. corporate leaders buy themselves big cars and houses and send their kids to pvt schools as reward for a job well done i.e. the company is delivering, whether it be results, profits, market growth etc so they MAY do with THEIR money as they wish but these government officials are spending MY money yet I have no say in how they do it. If they had I would have suggested the same as I just did in this post. It would seem that African leaders do not understand the definition of reward but wrote the book on entitlement hey!!! Makes me sick...

Ernst 7/20/2009 1:24:40 PM
Does the following mean that Mr Bling BMW (plus extras - 2.5Mil ) gets 100 years in jail for wasting money that could have been spent on health care and education? News 24 HeadlineBusinessman gets 10 years for R 250000 tax fraud Reason : "The face of tax offences is to be seen in the budgetary shortfalls in hospitals and clinics which prevent them from providing a better health care service to communities, the lack of more teachers to enable smaller classes at school, the lack of more policemen in our communities to fight crime."

Andrew 7/20/2009 1:30:36 PM
Good one Wayne but unfortunately the response will be zero. They don't give a damn what you or I say because they are untouchable. Even if Carte Blanche highlighted this it would not matter. There is a big drive on to collect taxes and anyone found to be crooking the system is looking at jail time as (I quote)"The face of tax offences is to be seen in the budgetary shortfalls in hospitals and clinics which prevent them from providing a better health care service to communities, the lack of more teachers to enable smaller classes at school, the lack of more policemen in our communities to fight crime."
Catch a wake up, the taxes are not spent on the things they should be but rather on the wims of our ministers or are lost due to suspect administration by govt. cos they don't have a clue what they are doing.

Mzi 7/20/2009 1:35:17 PM
If Minister Siphiwe Nyanda wants to buy the cars whats it got to do with you.He has worked very hard and faught very long to get where he is today.

Ash Khan 7/20/2009 1:47:57 PM
Well done Sir!. You articulate the thoughts and frustration of all the hard working TAX paying regular people of this country. Bravo, we should all have the courage to be more vocal like you...Bravo

Kevin 7/20/2009 1:58:24 PM
Nicely done. This should be sent to the presidential office.

BLACKsoWHAT! 7/20/2009 1:59:59 PM
Nyanda needs to return both those cars, this is blatant pampering of the highest order. But how come none of the opposition parties seating in parliament have not been up in arms on this one, is it because they themselves have or planning to treat themselves to this such toys, are they also afforded the opportunity.

@Mzi 7/20/2009 2:02:48 PM
He didnt buy them, we did. Our tax money on, not one, but two cars that cost more than the average house.

Sinudeity @Mzi 7/20/2009 2:10:06 PM
"If Minister Siphiwe Nyanda wants to buy the cars whats it got to do with you" - You just dont get it Mzi, its NOT HIS MONEY! If, he choose to buy himself a Merc with his OWN money, sweeeet. But, with a R200 BILLION shortage with regards to Healthcare, ANC politicians shouldnt go NUTS with OUR taxes. Its like, donating 10% to church, but the pastor uses the money to buy himself a car, instead of helping the poor. Do you get it now?!

OGIES 7/20/2009 2:11:37 PM
Excellent article !!! By the way in some EU countries it is not uncommon to see ministers travelling on public transport as well !! Yes the famous Mr Siphiwe Nyanda is an excllent example of why Africa is where it is . Incapable of leading by example with a polulation of more than 20 Million living below the bread line. Shame on you.

Justin 7/20/2009 2:12:35 PM
Chin up Wayne, ignore the negative, what a fantastic article. You summed up everything that a lot of SA residents feel on this. Well done, I would ignore people like Mzi with the great feedback given by other readers.

Maverick 7/20/2009 2:17:55 PM
This is the example that the leadership of the ANC sets to its followers. You can be corrupt as long as you can justify yourself. This mentality is reflected in the comment of Mzi. This article is compiled very well and the facts are given accurately. Rogue Trooper makes very valid points. Thanks for saying what we all think.

SimonP 7/20/2009 2:25:35 PM
@Sinudeity, Mzi will NEVER get it, well I guess he might when there is a 10million rand note.

johannes 7/20/2009 2:34:30 PM
Excellent article, but i am soory I can't help you. Just keep on paying taxes.By writting this kind of e-mails you are contributing to the nation and to the same top guys finacially. Keep on doing the good work during offices hours. Amen.

Phehello 7/20/2009 2:35:41 PM
@Wayne G, this is what I want to see and hear from patriotic South Africans, critising the government for failing to lead by example. It's people like Siphiwe Nyanda who are not using their common sense to differentiate between wrong and right. I'm glad I did not vote for people who only think for themselves, I'd be really ashamed if I'd voted them!

Thobile 7/20/2009 2:49:08 PM
I think I've done very well in the last couple of years. I've paid my taxes, taken care of my parents, and God has blessed me with a little extra change. In the next couple of weeks my new French car is being delivered to me. I will not apologise to anybody, poor or jealous, for my achievements. And if anyone else prospers in light of the recession, then I will clap my hands, because we need more good news.

@ Mzi 7/20/2009 2:49:20 PM
"He fought for it". What did he fight? Poverty? Health issues? No, probably the struggle. No wonder he had to install rear cameras, just in case the "struggle" catches up!

Viper 7/20/2009 2:58:25 PM
I think the best would be to ask the ANC to comment. After all they have a web site were you can place comments. Come lets see if they comment. I am going to place this letter in their comments box and see what happens...

Sinudeity @Thobile 7/20/2009 3:00:07 PM
As long as you dont use tax monies, you can buy yourself a Bentley.

Harvey 7/20/2009 3:02:04 PM
I love your article, pity the minister concerned would not give a damn, even if his own people are crawling through garbage cans for their next meal. So long as he looks the man in his 750i.

Grubs 7/20/2009 3:18:33 PM
You go Wayne! And that's why we vote DA.

@mzi 7/20/2009 3:33:11 PM
The only people who fought hard were the ordinary citizens who had nowhere else to go during those dark days. Sadly for them, they are still in the townships now bearing the brunt of a government run by individuals set on enriching themselves.

Jacques 7/20/2009 3:52:22 PM
I heard Siphiwe Nyanda complained about his cabin on the gravy train......

Sikh 7/20/2009 4:04:33 PM
Siphiwe, you silly boy, you forgot the Blue Lights.. now you can't go flying in your Beemer. Seriously, the tender process needs to be scrutinized, if there is one. What other alternative tender offers were received? How do they compare with BM offer etc. etc. The DA (we voted you in) needs to ask these questions and the findings made public.

Alan Bissett 7/20/2009 4:16:21 PM
Well written article - surely these supposed leaders should be setting an example by buying locally built cars such as Toyota Fortuners, double cabs or similar so as to maintain jobs - with the 750i most of the money leaves the country and the taxpayer has to fork out even more for high maintenance costs! Africa will never learn.

Mzi @ everybody 7/20/2009 4:19:48 PM
I bet most of the anti goverment complainers on this forum are white. Don't forget how we were treated like dogs back in the old days. Now when we try and live like joe blogs from Bryanston then everybody is up in arms.

Babooza 7/20/2009 4:23:29 PM
My sincere appreciation goes to the ANC supporters who are clearly acknowledging the mistake by the minister. This could be a good start to solve our problems.

Watcher 7/20/2009 4:33:26 PM
I watch these forums regularly, and it is astonishing how quiet the ANC faithfuls have gone...Wanye, great article. I think alot of people will start to realize the extent of what is happening thanks to this.

Laurie 7/20/2009 4:33:31 PM
For absolute shame. How on earth do you justify not one but TWO 750i beamers, when people are living in shacks?! Unbelievable! Thobile, I'm SOOO happy for you that you've paid your taxes, looked after your parents and are rewarding yourself with a brand new French car. Bully for you! But you paid for it with your own (I'm assuming) hard earned money - not someone elses! It's MINE and YOUR tax money that pays for this, not his own personal money!! How can that be ok with you? The guidelines state that he may spend up to 70% of his salary on a car - but it's JUST a guideline, not a rule!!! And if he had CHOSEN to upgrade and bling up a standard issue goverment car USING HIS OWN MONEY, that would have been fine, but NO ... he would much rather use the taxpayers instead. And all this when there are hospitals, schools and a million other WORTHY causes who could use this money instead!

werner 7/20/2009 4:51:54 PM
You are sorely missing the plot, my friend!!!

Sipho @ Mzi 7/20/2009 6:02:01 PM
My friend, we were told lies. My BMW has still not been delivered! My house, she is falling down, much like the government I feel. We must wake up, smell the coffee whilst she's still hot. Good luck with convincing yourself that the truth is nothing but lies.

Scarlet 7/20/2009 6:11:41 PM
I agree with Wayne 10000%. It makes me sick to read this. I think it is shameful and pathetic, disgusting!!! The one thing I do want to add is that everyone should remember that the "poor masses" also pay tax in the form of VAT on everything they buy and all forms of transport via tax on fuel. SO they may not pay personal tax, but they are also victims of this abuse of tax money, they who have to fight for R2500 per month and then pay R10 for a loaf of bread with the "fatcats" laughing all the way to the BMW showroom with the VAT.

Morgan 7/20/2009 7:11:16 PM
"Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Finished and klaar.

Byrnie 7/20/2009 7:30:56 PM
what needs to happen I think is there needs to be a Freedom of Information act (if it doesnt already exist) and Ministers expenses and how tax payers money is spent needs to be published in all national newspapers, as they've just done in the UK. Name and shame ministers who are wasting money/defrauding the public. What guidelines exist for spending? How are expenses reported?

The only way you can show voters how their money is being spent is look to open up the system and make this transparent. This goes for any government body. Hold these people to account.

Am I being too idealistic or does such a structure exist in SA?

Unbelievable though how R2.5m could be approved for this spending? Surely someone approved this? I cant believe it's just a complete free for all with no accountability? Again, if it's his own money, then fine. When it's it's taxpayers money it's vulgar and unacceptable!

KLAAS 7/20/2009 7:46:46 PM

Mike Ambassador 7/20/2009 7:54:02 PM
@ Mzi, this is not a race issue, if Dr Muller from the FF+ as a Dep. Minister did the same thing, people would be just as outraged. There is a recession Dude and huge needs in SA, which the very party he is a senior member of, has said they want to address. Seriously 2 x 320D BMW would have been the answer, they are safe, comfortable, economical, and made in SA. I am an Ambulance man and most of our ambulance fleet is in tatters here in the Eastern Cape. We have to drive on gravel roads in Hi- Ace's with over 500 000 km on clock, we would love to have 4 x 4 ambulances, but are told there is no money ..... yet there is money for 2 x 750i BMW's for one man. Really we are servicing the poorest of the poor in scrap. Go and tell your structures that Dude don't make it a black white thing.

Maybe the ministers should use the taxi services in our country. This will give them a reality check. But at the speeds the ministers travel in these black car convoys, they probably do not even notice these taxi kama kazi drivers.

Grant 7/21/2009 7:18:00 AM
Excellent article Wayne and they wonder why 17% of our doctors are leaving the country (never mind the thousands of others), its because they can probably see where things are going. Our 'ministers' (and i use that term very loosely as i'm not sure they should be classed with people who actually serve their countries as ministers) are basically raping and pillaging this country for their own enrichment and gain with no consideration for the people who put them in that position of power. Maybe if the tables were turned for one day they might reconsider their decisions but i have my doubts that it would even make them flinch. Keep on exposing them, i assume thats the only way.

Emile 7/21/2009 8:08:43 AM
Well, what can I say... well done ordinary south arficans. One article that doesnt become a racial mudslinging left and right. For once we all agree... now can we PLEASE keep it this way?????

Bilal 7/21/2009 8:22:17 AM
You go man these guys need to be told off about their irresponsible spending all in the name of status. they need to get their heads checked with a reality slap to show them that they are not at the top of the food chain. while millions are suffering with the lack of resources because we are apparently not financially able to cover cost for basic things like medical equipment and even medications as simple as panado.they should be reprimanded and smacked around with a trout to wake them up from this dream that they are all it. being able to look cool and pretty in their expensive suits does not make them appealing but accomplishing goals for this nation, who so needs their support, is what will earn them the respect of the millions that live in this lovely country.

Paul@Mzi 7/21/2009 8:45:35 AM
How old are you? Stop living in the past! It is only there to remind us of our wrongs so that we can make the future better...the longer you keep living in the past and blaming apartheid for everything the longer it will take for SA to come right! EVERYTHING is apartheids fault but let us not forget that it was all those people before that established and built what SA has today! We don't hear you complaining about that now do we???? The sooner the black people like you forget about apartheid, the sooner we can work together and make SA what it is meant to be!

Tax Fraud:Businessman sentenced to 10yrs to serve as a deterrent to others? Why, his one of vthe people not paying tax,so that our schools, hospitals, safety and security can be serviced!!!! "BUT" Ministers are allowed to rent homes between R30 000 to R35 000 per month, including having 2 cars costing approximately R1.5 million each, ALL THIS IS COMING FROM THE TAXPAYER, so Mr Businessman is being jailed cos his not looking after the COUNTRY'S CABINET, EXPLAIN THIS ONE!!!!!

Funny world! 7/21/2009 8:47:56 AM
It seems to me that rules and regulations make things all right, if you can put it on paper it is acceptable. I suppose that doesn't help Deon Buys much now seeing that he didn't pay the R250 000.00 taxes he owed and received 10 years for it, well I assume he knew it would have added to some bling bling and not to the so called hospitals and other related services. At least now he can claim back some of the squandered tax money because its taken from you when you're earning but not given when you are in hardship. Talk about a coin with two heads.

Ricky 7/21/2009 8:52:31 AM
Well said Wayne. As a BMW driver, I worry that I may be mistaken for a Govt Minister, and suggest that they display a notice on the front of their cars declaring "Struggle Hero In Transit". Someone may in time find an acronym for this.

LOL @ Ricky!

mrakm 7/21/2009 10:07:29 AM
Well-written article.
I also notice a deafening silence from the usual apologists. By my (simple) arithmetic, the "bling" on the BM's alone could have bought 2 CitiGolfs.
@Mzi - there is an old saying... "when you're in a hole, stop digging".
What the minister did is blatantly WRONG, and, in any other democratic country, he would not last a week after this type of flagrant abuse of taxpayer's (yours, too)money.

@ Mzi 7/21/2009 10:08:59 AM

Mandla Mngomezulu 7/21/2009 10:22:44 AM
The article is good as it touches things that all South Africans should be aware of and strive for a better solution.Wayne your article is hundred percent right however the problem is with these commentators who are still having a grudge of losing power. these people are are attacking the ANC and even insulting the poor. what is reading Sowetan and the Sun has to do with this article or buying the twoBMW cars. Guys please, your comments is tantamount to hate speech. get me well i am not condoning what the minister did, but you comments are nowhere near at arriving to the solution. we are now onfused whether you are blaiming Nyanda becasue of what he did or because 70% of the people voted ANC.Some of you are comparing the salaries of construction workers, unfortunately you are forgetting that the ANC govt does not have a consrtuction dept or company.Mose of the 2010 tenders are done by the Group Five which is white owned and no allied with the ANC. when someone is wrong he is wrong do not add unnecessary flavours. how is going to heed your correction if your comments insinautes hatred, and jealousy. Some of you are compalining about tax but they are not even tax compliant.

Molla Doll 7/21/2009 10:33:57 AM
Interesting caption from an article in News24.com "The truth is that tax offences are not victimless or faceless crimes," he said in a statement.

"The face of tax offences is to be seen in the budgetary shortfalls in hospitals and clinics which prevent them from providing a better health care service to communities, the lack of more teachers to enable smaller classes at school, the lack of more policemen in our communities to fight crime."

Yet the "fat cats" in government are defrauding the tax system on a daily basis by abusing taxes paid by hardworking law abiding poor citizens. How this happens baffles my mind?

Mark 7/21/2009 10:46:07 AM
Great article. Now think about this:
According to his dept, he can spend up to 70% of his yearly salary on vehicles. So if he used his maximum of 70% on the 2 vehicles, that would mean that his annual salary is around R3,6m. Surely with that salary he can afford to buy his OWN cars?

Mario 7/21/2009 11:13:29 AM
Why is there no perimeters to stop all the idiots on the gravy train , pity is as said before the poor cannot understand how it works so they still vote ANC

Eish, and in a few weeks I return to SA for a holiday, and I had my eye on staying for good, but 2 yrs later and still no significant change in SA. It's a real pity that things are still the same as I keep on telling my Aussie mates how lovely SA is and what it has to offer. Sadly I can now see that things are still the same. You need to be corrupt and in goverment to succeed in SA. If anyone knows how I can apply for a position within the SA Goverment please let me know, I'm so badly wanting a new car, house and unlimited spending money. I'm sure I could fake my qualifications too, but I would prefer to just not disclose them. VIVA ANC VIVA CORRUPTION AND VIVA 2010 When SA will be looked upon as another African Country that has been governed into the depths of hell.

Andries@Mzi 7/21/2009 12:37:11 PM
You are right. After fighting so long let us spend all the taxes on cars, houses and luxury item on all the struggle heroes. If the money runs out let us print some more or confiscate donor money. After all, it is Apartheid that is to blame.

@Mandla Mngomezulu 7/21/2009 12:57:37 PM
Yes i do agree some of hte commentators are out of line, however this has got alot todo with tax. Let me spell it out fore everyone. im fresh out of vasity, spent the last 4years of my life working and studying so i can get a job. Now every month i pay R1000 rand to the tax man, that i honestly woudnt mind, if it was spent on health care, education, public transport, policing, and yes houses for the poor. What i however do mind is the fat cats in goverment spending the money on themselfs, leaving the tax payer to pay taxes and medical aid, private security, personal cars and petrol (lets face it no proper public transport exsits) so we can have what we are supposed to get from paying taxes in the first place.

AS 7/21/2009 1:10:58 PM
Its shameful that Politicians can so easily forget their campaign rhetoric and blindly implement, not query, questionable budgetary allowances. In Namibia the Minister of Finance tabled her latest budget and tried to hide a new Jet under “transport.” The 2/3rd majority in Parliament saw nothing wrong with this, even defending this, but such actions are inexcusable for chosen representatives of a country where the majority are poor, uneducated, jobless and houseless. The masses cannot afford to buy (or read for that matter) newspapers, and will only cling onto empty political rhetoric of some heavily-guarded politician come election time. Where is common sense and humility?

Craig 7/21/2009 1:12:44 PM

emma 7/21/2009 1:27:51 PM
Apartheid has never been stronger, seen any whites and blacks visiting each other lately, look at work, blacks on the one side, whites on the other side. At least we had our safety during apartheid, something todays children will never have, who cares about safety, the masses have done their job and now ANC can have their bling-bling.

Tokolosh 7/21/2009 1:34:50 PM
"...you can't fool all the people all of the time." True, but sadly you don't NEED to fool all the people. Democracy means only having to fool MOST of the people, which is obviously what's happening here ...and probably will for a long time to come.

Mark 7/21/2009 2:08:32 PM
3 million taxpayers?
I wonder what would happen if every taxpayer in SA decided to NOT pay thier taxes for 1 month?
Maybe us taxpayers should go on strike for a while.....

Future Leader 7/21/2009 2:26:08 PM
the way i look at this,is, if i was in the same shoes - i would spend as much too, even buy a helicopter if need be - let them be after all it has been years since we had our bread with butter and whites have been having it all along and still do - with the BEE and AA in place i now have hope that we too cld have our black millionaires one day

Hennie 7/21/2009 3:25:55 PM
The ANC need to find alternative transport. Not if, but when the gravy train derails, they are going to be stranded and exposed. Can they not see the signs of derailment? Violent protests because no service delivery, huge unemployment, struggling economy, a militant and lawless taxi industry, crime which have reach the proportions of terrorism, loss of votes, and homeless starving followers. The ANC should know, when the train derails, the masses have no mercy, and will turn on them like a pitbull.

Fed Up 7/22/2009 11:22:24 AM
Dolly, you, just like the rest, do not get the point as to why every one is complaining. He used TAX PAYERS money. He could have bought a normal 3 series which would be sufficient but NO, he buys 2 monster BMW because just like you he thinks he probably "DESERVES" them. Your SO WHAT attitude is sad. Why exactly does he deserve it and why is it YOUR TIME now. If you can not get over the past and live for the future I recommend you climb in your BMW and leave...that is also an alternative.

The article is well written to open debate.
The whole ordeal boils down to perception.
Sitting with the "family bible in hand", it is easy to say, how could he even consider this? Why 2? Why include all optional extras.
On the other hand, if one is informed you have a specific budget for vehicles, why not?
I am of the humble opinion, that one should look at personal reasons for purchases of such exorbitant amounts. Is it a reward system, in which case, I would also buy R2.5 mil worth of ‘dream’. Could it be for prestige, in this case we could once again be easy judges with the "family bible in hand".
Surely this minister is a man who enjoys his luxury, thus the optional extras, and was given the opportunity to make an exorbitant purchase of vehicles.

Rather ask the question, what would I do if my company affords me the opportunity to reward myself with my dream?

One could now ask, are we not judging ourselves here?

mosco 7/22/2009 12:21:36 PM
good one wayne.Your article was well written and my question is will this ever get to the ministers ears, will they ever consider bringing us good change and benefits than just wheeping us off our feed..even the jobs that they say are being created are only got by those who are the members of the party...aren't we all south africans...the goverment isn't working for us but we working for it.Our families are struggling but theirs are in good motion...they waste money for useless things.....how do you feel when spending a R2.5m that you didn't even work for.....it seems like they have inhibited the Mugabe hormone...

Marcus 7/22/2009 12:49:56 PM
The most famous respected leaders in history all lead by example - did you see Madiba wasting money on luxuries? No, instead he worked hard and proved himself to be leave the leagacy he has. This has zero to do with racism and everything to do with accountability and true leadership. Do any of these ANC supporters have any other reasoning other than 'race card', 'race card' in defence of government's wasting of money? These ministers live way and beyond us Joe Bloggs's, who have to prove ourselves in the real working world - I'm happy to pay taxes if they are to be used for the most important priorities of improving all South Africans lives first. Once the ministers have actually achieved this, then they can start deserving luxuries. 1st world countries are precisley that, because their politicians delivered to make them that. If not, they are voted out (exactly like with a party like the DA that has 1st world accountability. That is what is making us taxpayers irate when the money desperately needed by the poor is wasted; and by letting it happen and doing it himself BEFORE actually delivering anything, JZ is setting the same tone as all other banana republics do. Many of the poor who voted ANC will die avoidable deaths over the next few years of hunger, disease, exposure etc - hope you sleep well at night Mr Nyanda, knowing that you could have saved those lives. So BS reasoning aside, even the most basic economist or educated person knows this is no generalisation or racist issue - you lead by example!

Kit @ Dolly 7/22/2009 1:39:18 PM
Dolly it is all well it is your time, but what about everyone else that voted, and suportet the ANC? is it only the privelage of a select few to drive in BMW? should the money be spent to better the lives of those other unknows that also fought against Apartheid? And that is my problem with some of the comments, they only care about themselfes, what about the others? you fought for a better life for all, and instead you got a better life for some. and unless you know the right people in the right place, no one cares what you did. because while they can stay in shaks, with no water, food, clothes or propper sanitation, you and the minister can drive around in your BMW, and why not because you deserve it and the average Joe on the street does not. and then I ask you, what makes you better than them? what gives you the right to say the minister deserves a car he doesnt need when children are dying on the street? when that money could be used to feed the children? to send them to school? So i ask you, are you that self absorbed in the past, that you can condone another evil, even tough it is not Appartheid it is just as bad. so open your eyes, and see what the goverment can do for the people if they live a little less in luxury

Marcus 7/22/2009 1:52:24 PM
@Cry: Your Sbu Ndebele example is unfortunately only a drop in the ocean, and he would have set an example only if he'd done it on his own first, not checked first with JZ and then reluctantly given it back. The majority of your leaders have to set the example before you can say they are acting morally and are accountable as servants to the taxpaying public. For that to happen, JZ would have to set the example himself, but pigs are more likely to fly to the moon.
@Jo-anne, if that is even really your name: the taxpaying public doesn't really give a continental what goes on in other countries -simple fact is our hard-earned taxpaying money continues to be largely squandered - and even if it's to the tune of 75B+ as with the arms deal, it's swept under the carpet (your beloved JZ was never actually proven). Where there's smoke there's usually a fire, so as long as the non-stop billowing smoke keeps pouring from ANC officials, there is nothing racist about all taxpayers continuing to bring this to attention (after all in the 'other countries' you refer to, this is what taxpayers do all the time, without their politicans being able to hide behind a farcical 'race card' excuse for any corruption highlighted.

tom1 to mzi 7/22/2009 1:54:02 PM
when you wipe the mud out your eyes and stop believing the propoganda that you are fed by the ANC maybe you will see that this was completely out of order frankly i am happy to see people been succesfull just how they have become succesfull is worrying, do you understand how much 2.5m is,your comments are really infantile......

Irene 7/22/2009 2:33:03 PM
NOt that I don't agree, because I do. But don't think this selfish spending is exclusive to South Africa, or by some commenters views, the ANC. Politicians aren't known for their goodwill and philanthropy, they're known as greedy and power hungry.
What about thev recent scandal in the UK with regards to politicians and their spending. ITS POLITICS. Dont get me wrong this gets me very hot under the collar, but if you think politicans are there for your or the country's wellbeing, life still needs to teach you a few hard lessons

Byron 7/22/2009 3:17:55 PM
Why dont u publish the ministers name for us

Capital Q 7/22/2009 4:05:08 PM
Great article! Factual, well presented and not at all slanted. I am amazed at the silence from the 'usual pro-ANC suspects' in the peanut gallery. It's sad to see that they cannot even reprimand their own officials when they are so clearly in the wrong....

Brian 7/22/2009 6:07:20 PM
@ikabot: You don't create jobs by spending money, certainly not on these vehicles - I hope you are not in the business of advising anyone. You create jobs by increasing productivity, ie those who have jobs work harder for less to pave the way for job creation - something you are probably not prepared to do.

Brian 7/22/2009 6:10:49 PM
The most appropriate comment out of all these must be the reference to our ambulances having in excess of 500'000 km's vs the Hon. Min. not prepared to drive a vehicle over 120'000 km's. Could this be extrapolated to imply that he is more important than a person requiring emergency transport to save a life!!! That would be tragic!!

Stefan Jacobs 7/22/2009 8:25:56 PM
Sorry to disappoint everybody but this behavior is not unique. I am a South African living in the UK and our MPs (members of parliament) did pretty much the same “MP’s expenses scandal”,

imo 7/22/2009 10:11:54 PM
I'm so excited about buying this car at a gov auction for close to nothing in about 2 years time

Blind 7/22/2009 10:58:41 PM
Why would they stop voting for the ANC?
The average ANC supporter gets a lot. Subsidised electricity, water, grants for almost anything, UIF , free medicines, free schooling etc. Let's not mention affirmative action. They would lose most of these privileges, if any other party won a general election. I don't think the ANC supporters are blind, I think us RICH people are.

The poor will continue to vote in what is in their best interests, even if it ruins our country in the long run. Expect higher taxes, Higher Living costs and a lot of it.

thandi 7/22/2009 11:55:21 PM
Two more cars have been bought for Angie and Blade. These are the people who were vocal about their support for JZ. They have been rewarded in all respects

Titch427 7/23/2009 1:14:44 AM
To ALL SAfricans - do what I did. Vote with your feet !! Fortunately I am no longer conrtributing any taxes towards maintaining these baboons' lifestyle. I am in New Zealand where this kind of extravagance wouldn't be tolerated.

M-A 7/23/2009 5:53:57 AM
Why do the words, "let them eat cake" come to mind? Well at least we know what happened to that class of exploiters so there is still hope

Mike 7/23/2009 6:13:02 AM
I remember doing VIP Protection at the University of Port Elizabeth in the 1990's for the ANC Congress. We were tasked to fetch Blade from his on campus residence and bring him to give his address. Anyway we had a pool of cars to use, so we choose a nice black Jag. Well when we arrived Blade took one look at the car and said "No way can a communist arrive at a congress in such a car!!!". Well now I see his Dept has bought him a BMW 730i wonder if he will have the same attitude now that he is a Minister and "entitled" to have such an expensive car.

jan 7/23/2009 7:44:42 AM
Not a word from COSATU or Babyboy Malema. Are they also using the socialist followers to live a capitalist lifestyle? Check the cars they drive?

cindy 7/23/2009 7:54:55 AM
so, another minister decided to spend our hard-earned tax money to splash out. what gets me the most is the fact that our education dept is in shambles, yet they have the money to spend on flashy cars! doesn't help to complain though, not going to stop the fatcats doing what they want! with the blessing of the likes of Mzi of course!

Hennie 7/23/2009 8:12:03 AM
And Zuma will, besides his array of cars, buy a jet to get to places fast, because remember, Shaik is lying on his deathbed.

Worker 7/23/2009 8:38:30 AM
I'm currently working in the public sector. You all have NO IDEA as to the waste that goes on. While people loose their job s these guys go out and spend R500 000 on a party R200per gift per attendee... The JHB councel rubbish department alone in a year only spent 30% of their alloted capital budget on project they were supposed to spend 100% on. So what do they do to try and make up for the unspent budget you may ask. They buy furniture, computers and auction off all their "old" stuff.
This points system that the government has that if you don't spend your budget you get less the next year is the stupidest thing I have heard of. Don't only ask what you have spent, ask what you have spent it on.
Don't take our tax payers money away from these departments but rather ensure that they spend the money on what they should be doing... DOING THEIR JOBS. Whis is another topic whcih just proves just how inefficient out government departments actually are...
Govenment has no money BULL C#@P. You could lower our taxes because you have more than enough if you spend it on parties, fancy cars, houses...
JZ last night you asked the private sector to come to the party to help with an African disease control center. You could fund the thing our of your own pocket let alone the governments coffers...
I just wonder when JZ will step up and but the $20m jet that we all know he most desperately wants...

Andrew 7/23/2009 9:48:44 AM
I remember seeing a photo of Gordon Brown, the prime minister of the United Kingdom, taking the underground in London to work. Here is a man who is head of state of a developed country immensely more powerful than South Africa, travelling with everyone else. That is how our ministers should behave.

paulacarneiro 7/23/2009 10:08:40 AM
Well done Wayne. I would love to see the ANC supporters now. I have always said in my next life I would love to be african, yes I am being a racist. Our politicians only seem to care about themselves, leaving the homeless to fend for themselves. I struggle every month to pay my house, car, insurance and medical aid yet this monkey goes out and buys two new cars. SA is heading for another Zim crisis! Wake up and smell the coffee President, Minister's etc WE HAVE A CRISIS IN OUR COUNTRY!

brendan 7/23/2009 10:09:02 AM
maybe Siphiwe Nyanda should start a business with these cars, like taking some township kids for a joy ride in his luxury cars and telling them that he rather decided to buy these fancy cars than provide their township with the descent housing etc. At least then Siphiwe Nyanda would be doing something constructive with his cars. Could I also have a joy ride MR Siphiwe Nyanda??

Mark 7/23/2009 11:26:54 AM
Another R1.7mil on 2 more vehicles. That totals over R4mil in less than 2 weeks, spent on crap, just to satisfy someone's greed and image.
That R4mil could have paid over 40 state doctors salaries for a year. If not them, how many policemen and women or teachers could have been paid? How much food could that have bought for the poor starving ANC voters in the townships?
This is not a race thing. I am white and if we had a white government that did the same thing, I would be just as p***ed off.
I maintain that one goes into politics to help their nation and country because they are patriotic, and should therefore do it for free out of respect and as a civic duty to their country. Not to get rich and show off like the alpha-male in a troop of baboons.

Paul 7/23/2009 11:28:50 AM
YOU SEE...read workers comment! That is whatthese monkeys in parliament are doing with your taxes! THAT IS A CRIME in the highest degree! Stealing honest peoples money to suit their lifestyles...people like that should be put against the wall and...!

T@mmy 7/23/2009 1:49:58 PM
Gr8 article Wayne G. I believe that the people still condoning this behaviour from our ministers, need to Wake up! SA needs support from all the ppl including the ministers! It doesn't matter who voted for who, whether we are white / black, we all need to stand together against this sort of wastage in these harsh times! Look after the people of SA.

Ash 7/23/2009 2:38:38 PM
A brillient piece Wayne. I just hope that what you said filters through to gov.

Freya 7/23/2009 3:52:02 PM
They so rich, one of Zuma's kids went and bought a R66000 on a watch for thier partner at a fancy cariter store

Anthony 7/24/2009 9:49:23 AM
All the people talking about the UK MP's . Do you realise that those MP's wont be in those positions for much longer . The public will have them out . But here in SA where i pay my taxes the MP's will get away with it and keep their jobs to boot

Cheryl 7/24/2009 10:27:46 AM
This, like many similar pieces, is well written and hits the nail on the head. But....those who should read it and take heed don't care at all. They are out spending our hard earned money and don't have time to give a thought to the citizens of this country - those who put them in power and those who pay their salaries and bills.

Joe 7/24/2009 11:50:46 AM
Take the letter and all the comments , ask a brave Independent newspaper to post it for the weekend readers . I wish independent thinkers can pass on the message to the poor millions , the majority who are unfortunate to not see the ANC for what it is today .
They will vote in their millions again in the next election for the same ANC that is doing this to them . Did you read what Msholozi is promising hungry rioters and those demanding services ? LOL , he promises them Umshini wam now , he will let the police loose on them , hardly three months from the almost two thirds majority they gave him . I am Loving it , LOL !!!!!!

Kevin 7/24/2009 12:02:21 PM
We still have 2 submarines sitting on the cradles where the Germans left them...
No accountability. This is the fault of the voters. We decide on what happens and if our governement is crap, it is the voter who is responsible. The ANC have said we have the right to rule-not the right to govern. The poor are always the looser because their voice is never heard unless they stage riots. The ANC should be ashamed of what they have done with all the money. Oh sorry I forget, it's the whiteys fault...Dam whiteys are still messing up the country like they did in Zimbobwe.

David 7/24/2009 12:43:33 PM
Our government is being run like a pyramid scheme. We put in our hard earn money and we are being promised better education, health, living conditions etc. Instead it is being wasted on their greed. Shame on them.

Joe 7/24/2009 12:57:05 PM
Hey guys , we`ve been talikg to ourselves for too long . Wayne must put that letter on email so we can have a chain letter about this , that way we get a wider audience than those that access News 24 . Agree ? The ANC or it`s voters don`t read or worry about what we write here .

Gail Welman 7/24/2009 1:41:05 PM
Exactly what I wanted to say Wayne G. How about trying to boost our economy like Germany did and let our Government support local products - like "Golf" motorcars. That would make a statement.

Wayne G 7/24/2009 1:44:51 PM
Hi all. Wow I can’t believe my letter has reached so many people. Thank you for the comments, it is something I feel so strongly about and I am tired of moaning in my friend and family circles, it is not enough. Feel free to email it, copy it, post it, fax it to everyone until it reaches the union buildings. These guys are getting away with daylight robbery. We together have the power to pull the plug once and for all on these ignorant ministers.

Paulacarneiro 7/24/2009 1:53:26 PM
Hey Joe I agree with you lets put as a chain letter. Wouldn't it be nice to have this article and its comments published in The Star, Sowetan, Citizen, Local area newspapers and papers, this way everyone who voted for the ANC can see what a huge mistake they made.

Neil 7/24/2009 5:35:19 PM
I wonder how many communities could be fed, kept healthy and lives changed with 2.5 million rand.

MUSA 7/25/2009 7:46:45 AM

Nasman 7/25/2009 10:22:38 AM
Well said Wayne

@CHARLES 7/25/2009 12:35:17 PM
A private company, earning its own money and rewarding its staff is one thing. A government, who is the tax payers employee wasting our money on crap is a totally different story. Trust me, if the government was a company it would have gone belly up months, if not years ago. Please enlighten us with what he has done to deserve 2 750i BMW's. I humbly await your response.......

Andre H 7/25/2009 8:55:15 PM
Adding my support to cut this sort of vulgar government spending.

katman 7/28/2009 3:52:05 PM
Nyanda is no the only one. Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga also purchased a pair of luxury vehicles - a new Range Rover and a BMW 730D, at a combined cost of R1,7-million. I fail to see how a cap of, say, R300 000 for senior cabinet ministers and, say, R240 000 for lesser officials will endanger or embarrass them. This will buy a very neat 1600 or 1800 sedan with all the safety features and comfort trims. They can be purchased with motorplans. In fact, I agree with an earlier comment that government cars should be managed as a fleet. Placing bulk orders with Volkswagen or Toyota will secure handy discounts, and our ministers will look spiffy in their Jettas, Corollas and Golfs.

Par3 7/31/2009 10:36:52 AM
It doesn't matter how much you complain, the government wipes it's ass with our complaints. Accept it, and get used it.

Andriesenator 8/7/2009 1:09:39 PM
Why can't they buy second-hand cars...? Like a 1980 Mercedes-Benz W123 240 Diesel....? Each "Menestah" must get a car that is directly linked to the performance of their respective Departments. Then Siphiwe should drive a donkey cart pulled by disease-ridden mules....

Ruark F 9/30/2009 1:03:45 AM
what a great letter. I salute you. Now if only Telcom made internet available for cheaper we could get this message out to the rest of SA.
