'Congratulations SAB'

by Tshepo Matjila

It is said that in the absence of light, darkness prevails.

Indeed this has been made to pass muster as we continue to be bombarded from all corners by naysayers who are predicting the end of the world as we know it, eg the global financial crisis is going to get worse before it gets better; Eskom's tariff hikes are going to throttle the economy; our drinking water is undrinkable; SABC has collapsed under its own mismanagement weight; rampant public services strikes trying to make the new government ungovernable are signs of an imploding country; etcetera, etcetera.

This is best time to be a pessimist as all the signs of a calamitous environment are prevalent, but goodness ALWAYS triumphs against evil and those on the real pulse of the economic heartbeat are already seeing the silver linings on the dark clouds.

For example, the SA budget deficit at less than 25% gives us a lot of space to manoeuvre; Pravin Gordhan has already identified the inefficiencies in our financial expenditures - and you can be sure that he will tighten those inefficiencies like he did at Sars; Interest Rates are continuing to fall to within their target 3-6% band; and my point of focus: SAB has announced a multi-billion BBBEE deal!

Many people, including some charlatans, have been quoted extensively in the media lambasting BEE deals for their unsustainability and thus questioning BEE necessity in the aftermath of the global financial meltdown. We were given stats after stats of BEE deals that were under threats of collapse when the economy started to bite. It was said that BEE debt were throttling effectiveness of their host companies as Interest Rates spiked and attrition started to show. Some even intimated that BEE was not even entrepreneurship!

What many people fail to understand is that subjects of redress are not only necessary for a country which was once on the brink of civil war, but are key elements in restoring parity and creating a conducive environment for business and self-worth for previously disenfranchised people to actualise. SAB, thank God, understand this very principle well: create a condition for business optimisation and never forget CSI initiatives as they ensure your longevity. With this deal SAB has affirmed its future in SA (10 year deal) and has shown its support for the government of President Zuma.

I am one of the first to admit openly that some of the legislations meant to redress have challenges in their implementations (that might have arisen from their conceptualisations), but good intention is better than none!

With the SAB's historic BBBEE deal, we can expect to see real empowerment of people (both black and white employees would benefit) and an elimination of the comprador bourgeoisies who front for agents of imperialism tendencies. The real merchants of death who use their large largesse to sponsor war across the continent.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate SAB Ltd on a master-deal, which when all is said and done, shows that businesses can be agents of change without being hamstrung by government-passed legislations.

The move is very welcomed and shines the light on the positive sentiment that most South Africans share about this glorious country.

@ mTshepana - as much as I'd to see black men being empowered. 90% of the BEE deals have benefited only a handful of ANC cadres. normal citizens like ourselves dont even have proper access to such deals. Greed...greed...greed has been the order of the day through the BEE transactions. Once a bucaneerer always a bhakabhaka though.

I have nothing against good BEE deals, as long as the BEE partners can ADD VALUE and not just sit back and expect handouts.

SM 7/2/2009 3:19:48 PM
Yeah the deal is great. Question is for whom? On the other hand SAB should be doing execptionally well as I believe it is better dying drunk than sober in a government hospital.

Mzi 7/2/2009 3:32:17 PM
he he he, you just wrote a master piece. now let me sit back and enjoy my space as I read the comments from the angryst.

Nice letter! Finally something thats meant to look like a BBBEE deal and not the usual deal to empower the already Fat fat cats that represent the real imperial agents of the elite few . BBBEE is meant to bring people into and include them in the economy of the counrty thereby strengthening it and making real headway into fighting poverty . I agree with Blade , its not about ownership but incorporation and the development of the people as a whole .

Will 7/2/2009 4:02:58 PM
I am all for BEEE, as long as the poor masses benifit from it, and not the elite that have benefitted from all the other deals. Black Economic Empowerment should be to that advantage of all the Black poeple of this country, and not just for the Mr Sexwales and friends. By the way, I am white

@tshepo 7/2/2009 4:30:40 PM
Which comrade do you think will steal the most ??

Stryder 7/2/2009 5:34:59 PM
BEE and AA as well as sports quotas are racist policies. Racsim is evil and unjustifiable. Draw your conclusions.

Assuming the SAB deal can be taken at face value, it is probably a good one. However, one deal pales in comparison to the many that have been done. The government is even trying to destroy some of the deals that have been done through the new Codes of Good Practice that apply to the mining sector in particular. Many deals are unsustainable because to work they have to amount to a handout. Many are a problem because those involved aren't actually able to bring much to the deal other than the ticking of a box. There are certainly cases where the deal didn't involve any entrepeneurship, but was done to allow an encompassing transaction to happen. And there's no doubt that the deals have, in general, enriched a few particular people. Most deals don't make it to the front page like the SAB deal. Often they're not a share offering to the public or employees, etc. Even those that are aren't necessarily good. Just look at Sasol's. I doubt that many people would be happy about the deals that have been done if they started to dissect them. Even those that look good on the surface tend to turn out to be rotten underneath. Unfortunately good often doesn't win over evil. This is not because (BB)BEE is bad, but because of the way the whole thing has been done. We can but hope that the SAB deal is as good as it sounds. That will certainly make it stand out way above many of the deals that get done.

@mzi 7/2/2009 6:38:52 PM
sad thing is though that BEE is percieved as TAX. Give up a % of your company to someone else. Pity that the people invoved in the BEE deals people cannot do this on merit. The same goes for AA - maybe the AA dude or the BEE dude is capable/qualified, but in the end he got the job because of a racist policy. No other reason.

SimonP 7/2/2009 6:50:59 PM
"elimination of the comprador bourgeoisies who front for agents of imperialism tendencies". What a load of lond worder BS!!

Paul Grant 7/3/2009 2:10:48 AM
Nice letter, however I am wondering how long it will take before the wheels start coming off, as they do with all BEE deals. Somewhere hidden within this deal is an ANC fat cat who stands to gain. All BEE deals sees someone simply being "given" shares etc in order to make the figures, just so that they can sit over backwards and watch their bank balances grow so that they can "donate" some of the funds to their comrades who got htem there in the first place. Show me how this deal will assist the man on the street?

Jaco 7/3/2009 8:09:06 AM
These deals only benefit a handfull of people that already has enough and not those that it should, lets use a few examples I saw, The Sasol and Vodacom shares to name two, the individuals I know that qualified and bought these shares because of their skin colour is all but poor, living in a R3 million house driving a R700k car etc in my book does not make you poor and these are the guys that already has a lot that is buying into these schemes to become richer, your domestic worker or labourer can not afford this so just out of that point it is a farce, rather make it available to those that need it most(domestic workers, farm workers etc). I see these wealthy guys the moment these schemes come up they buy the maximum they are allowed.

Ryan Hembroke 7/3/2009 9:46:05 AM
The BBEEE deal by SABMiller is going to empower the Shebeen owners, liquer store owner, and other associated dealers. That's the people on the ground, not to even mention employees of this great company. I agree with the writer, SABMiller understand the importance of fair game. Now more S Africans need to understand that this is a means of redress not the end. It just needs to be within a reasonable framework and more work put to eliminate corruption and cronysm when making these supposed glass-shuttering deals.

This is just so sad!! Good-bye Castle Lager, I will have to start drinking some imported beer now

limpopo love 7/3/2009 11:28:35 AM
Just to fundraise money to build beer plant somewhere somalia/sudan that other side of african countries.secoundly they said it first time in histroy to manufature beer in muslim countries of which high security if need at the plant.so to get money to secure that plant it is through BEE ,what if the plan dont bear fruit all shareholder will loose all their money.I dont think those who are buying shares DO SO by thier own risk.look what sasol did NZALO share money used to pay all monies they have been sued.FOR THAT AMEN...

Simon 7/6/2009 8:33:55 AM
Tshepo this is an excellent article - but I said that on your blog anyway :)

DR 7/9/2009 7:31:06 PM
Normally a few elite benefit from BEE deals, this deal distributes shareholding to accommodate people at the grass roots. However, it's also a racial matter as whites will not benefit, and dont forget SAB has ensured its customer base is retained. When all is said and done, the final outcome is maintaining the present customers, viz, the sheebeens.
