Eskom decapitated

by George Annandale
2009-11-05 13:01

Barbara Hogan told Parliament - paving the way I'm sure, for Jacob Zuma to save Jacob Maroga's hide - the woes of Eskom cannot be totally attributed to Maroga.

Is Hogan implying that nobody should ever be sanctioned because there is always someone else that contributed to the failure? The actions of the ANC government certainly bear evidence of such beliefs, if only on selective basis.

Examples where leaders were not held accountable, contrary to the head honcho's assurances that incompetence will not be tolerated, are legion and we see almost daily reports of underperformers being rewarded for their efforts. The names of prominent cronies and clients spring to mind; Radebe, Mshuwana, Ramokgopa, Xingwana, Nkgacula, Mdladana - the list goes on.

Hogan's contention that Maroga is not solely responsible for Eskom is however not devoid of truth. Major contributors to the disaster, Jeff Radebe, Alec Irwin, Sonjica and high flying Crane inspector Phumzile Mlambo-Ngucka all contributed to the disaster that is Eskom.

Perhaps Hogan, under pressure from the "Friends of Jeff Society", feels that rather than being repudiated and forced into another public apology, she will follow the path of least resistance and get someone else to make the decision whilst she paves the way for all the alternatives and eventualities.

Despite this, one fact remains, Maroga is the leader and his leadership has been anything but inspirational. Instead of inspiring confidence, he has contributed largely in driving the organisation and country closer to the precipice in the process destroying investor confidence.

His recent list of achievements ironically is a presentation by the Acting Director of Human Resources of Eskom's on their benchmark performance in the field of the Development of Human Capital - rich coming from an demoralised and directionless organisation without an HR Director or CFO.

Rumours of Zuma's intervention, hot on the heels of the Malema's calls for Maroga to be protected, are rife. Coincidence? I doubt it.

Should the pro-Maroga faction run into problems they still have the formidable clown, Jimmy Manyi waiting in the wings to support this giant of transformation.

Whatever happens and in true ANC government style, Maroga, will be well rewarded. I suspect he will, R15m later, resign, happy and content with Manyi shouting foul.

Yes, and while zuma and hogan are flying around in private jets or driving around with luxury cars, protecting their millionaire buddies, THE POOR MASSES WHO VOTED FOR THEM are still suffering witout running water, toilets or houses. 'a better life for all' indeed.

SimonP 11/5/2009 1:13:34 PM
Only in a banana republic would incompetence of this magnitude no unpunished. Guess that means we live in a banana republic.
One wonders how long ANC supporters will tolerate this continuation of giving top jobs to incompetent cadres.

annie rennie 11/5/2009 1:16:52 PM
People,it's time for us to take notice !!!!!!!! Julius Malema rules SOUTH AFRICA and not Jacob Zuma, what Julius wants Julius gets. Julius doesn't have to pay his speeding fines, nobody dare speak to Julius because he is Julius (god of the ANCYL). He doesn't have to consider other people living next to him, he can drive like a maniac without and lately with a blue light. he decided that Joel Santana must go, the only words that Julius know are ... struggle, racist, comrades, apartheid, and then his own name. Malema will instruct South Africa to support Maroga as well !!!!!!!!

Spartan 11/5/2009 1:21:43 PM
Barbra Hogan is part of the ANC govt. & therefore will do what the ANC wants her to do which is to keep its loyal struggle caders in power no matter how much they screw up. Good performance is not ANC requirement, struggle credentials are what count.

As so it continues 11/5/2009 1:23:20 PM
Eskom is a success story, if you dont believe me ask any ANC supporter. The list is growing SABC, SAA, Land Bank, Municipalities all ANC driven, all with gaping holes in their finances, all real home grown success stories.

Another example of the dysfunctional society we live in..............there always has to be collective blame apportioned, no one has the guts to stand up and say 'the buck stops with me'. Whether the blame is laid at the door of colonialism, apartheid or a dead mother in law....someone else is always to blame!

cuba 11/5/2009 1:26:07 PM
well this is just in, the Maroga has left the building:

Jann 11/5/2009 1:26:49 PM
At what point does the buck stop? Lack of accountability is going to kill this country - well that and HUGE payouts for incompetence.

Tsotsi 11/5/2009 1:29:00 PM
Barabara is as stupid as Gill Marcuss. FULL STOP!

Cynical@SimonP 11/5/2009 1:29:28 PM
"One wonders how long ANC supporters will tolerate this continuation of giving top jobs to incompetent cadres." They'll tolerate it forever. Remember that most are academically and functionally illiterate, lacking the very basics of life skills and completely unable to think for themselves. I'll bet you the average baboon has a higher IQ.

anonymous3 11/5/2009 1:34:17 PM
The problem with this article is that it creates the impression that all problems in SA started with the current government, no mention whatsoever of mismanagemnt from the previous regime. All the people that you mention in the article are current government officials. The truth is that the planning of the previous government was based on providing a select few with electricity as if the rest of the citizens don't exist. I am waiting to hear the usual propaganda that people in the township don't pay electricity despite the fact that most houses have prepaid system.

Sambok 11/5/2009 1:39:32 PM
So, let's hope some of the "Airbus billions" finds it's way to help out Escom before it is collected by German car dealers.
Also, make sure the money go to Escom AFTER Maroga left the building, just to prevent another R15 million handshake.

Anna 11/5/2009 1:39:45 PM
Headline: CEO has resigned. Wonder what package he got for "a job well done!!!!!"

Who next 11/5/2009 1:40:33 PM
So hes resigned but why wasnt he fored.
Wonder if any lessons have been learnt? Who will replace him 1. A qualified competent person or 2. an unqualified cadre

@annonymous3 11/5/2009 1:44:50 PM
The previous regime did not make false promises to the uneducated masses. At least "their" people had water, lights, schools, hospitals, etc etc. What do the "ANC" people have? Nothing!!

Mike 11/5/2009 1:48:46 PM
Hello darkness, my old friend.............I see Maroga resigned in the end
Because the vision of the ANC, left us with no electricity
And the R15M he gains, Still remains
Within the sights of darkness

Wim 11/5/2009 1:53:19 PM
@ Tsotsi: I'm sure both Barbara Hogan and Gill Marcus can spell, though.
@ George: Try to look at a copy of the 1998 Minerals & Energy White Paper before you oversimplify.

LSA 11/5/2009 1:55:42 PM
Barbara Hogan is a puppet and yes she is also a cocnut. She is bowing down to the baboons. She has no legs to stand on. What a waste....

arfie @ anonymous3 11/5/2009 1:57:48 PM
You are quite correct their bills are up to date due to the monies owing being written off at billions of rands every financial year by the municipalities. Yes they have prepaid electricity the question however is how up to date are the payments for rates and taxes? I have seen the accounts for many township residents and believe me owing R38 000-00 for arrears rates and taxes means that particular resident will die owing money to the local authority!

POST MY COMMENTS PLEASE 11/5/2009 2:00:49 PM
Is it true DID MAROGA RESIGN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And now who replaces him, I hope the next will turn things around in Eskom

@ Jaun 11/5/2009 2:00:51 PM
Stop worrying about the masses. They are happy and doesnt have any problems. Did you not see zizo's previous post? They all have houses ,water electricty and old granny's have grants.Rather spend all your energy worring and securing your own family and people. They have the anc. Just one more thing I am working on is not to pay tax anymore. Then I dont care what they do.Glock

Anon1 11/5/2009 2:01:44 PM
Wait for it, severnace package will probably be R15-R20 mil, incompetance is rewarded if its an ANC comrade!

Jann 11/5/2009 2:03:47 PM
@Who next. We can suggest a multiple vote to News24:
1. Who will replace him? (options as per yours)
2. How much SHOULD he receive as a bonus payout?
3. How much WILL he receive as a bonus payout?
Think the results could be interesting.

tdk@anonymous3 11/5/2009 2:03:54 PM
Your comment about the prepaid metres in the township houses goes a bit further. You can buy the same amount of units for R50 in Sebokeng than one can buy for R100+ in town, and I have the proof for it. Even went with my house keeper to see myself.

Yere 11/5/2009 2:13:44 PM
FYI......Jacob Maroga has resigned. Guess thats what you wanted

Halfwise@LSA 11/5/2009 2:28:40 PM
If I were you, I wouldn’t be calling Babara Hogan a puppet. Couple of months ago she had her foot in the mouth and you were the first to salute her. Get real here please

LSA@Halfwise 11/5/2009 2:43:38 PM
She is a puppet. She is not thinking on her own. She needs to make decisions on her own, HER decisions...

MarkH 11/5/2009 2:49:52 PM
Ho hum, another parastatal CEO fails, receives a golden handshake to move on and will doubtless shortly reappear in another position in another poorly run parastatal dependant on us taxpayers to keep them afloat. The only difference between all these organisations and a circus is that in a real circus the clowns DON'T run the show.
It's like a merry-go-around the way these same people wander around from one high-flying job to another, endlessly screwing up and then moving on.
Transparency, responsibility, accountability and ability all seem to conveniently be absent in their cases, very handy to have such gullible tax-payers isn't it?
It's no surprise that the unions are starting to take swings at these people and I for one am starting to think that this particular type of capitalism is doing us, as a country, more harm than good.
Perhaps if these people had their remuneration packages linked to performances we would start seeing actual performance instead of endless excuses.
Wouldn't bet on it as they're invariably all ruling party heavyweights but it may be worth a try as we're going nowhere slowly at the moment............

10111 11/5/2009 2:55:29 PM
A black-out

@LSA 11/5/2009 3:25:52 PM
You are asking an ANC member to think for themself. Impossible Im afraid all ANC members must tow the party line or else.

Tgif 11/5/2009 3:40:32 PM
Have they ever thought of powering the electricity generators with dried banana skins there should be tons of the stuff laying around in this here Republic ?

Jacques 11/5/2009 3:42:31 PM
@anonomous 3, Yeah the pre 94 governement was terrible, that is why I voted them out as soon as I was allowed to vote. (remember the referendum?) I never voted them in, they never did anything for me.... what are you prepared to do about the sorry state of affairs?

@10111 11/5/2009 3:46:44 PM
LoooooL well played :)

LSA 11/5/2009 4:00:38 PM
Anonymous3-prepaid metres in the townships, my foot!! The only thing that gets paid for is the bribe to the official coming to cut the electricity off!!!!!!!

Werner 11/5/2009 4:07:48 PM
It doesn't matter: "Escom decapitated" , because it never had any brain anyway!

Martian Artefact 11/5/2009 4:13:50 PM

You and the other Economic Terrorists have sabotaged the country.

u go girl

Trevor 11/5/2009 4:21:40 PM
Lets give this a little bit of thought. Everyone blames Maroga.Has anyone considered that he may just be a figurehead sitting on top of a managment structure loaded with deployed comrades who have been placed there by the ANC and they actually controled Maroga and told him what to do. Makes you think doesn't it!!!!!.

PLEASE POST MY COMMENTS 11/5/2009 4:42:19 PM
@LSA,you will not survive a day with your hot air, politics is not for sissies and for as far as i know,Barbara Hogan has been an independent thinker as far back as Mandela's presidency for your information. So what you're saying is not the truth.

ivanr 11/5/2009 4:53:45 PM
Maroga gone. From the darkness into total darkness.HOW LONG BEFORE WE SEE THE LIGHT?

Lou 11/6/2009 8:43:26 AM
B Hogan had been an independent thinker; she is running the risk of being isolated and worked out like T Manuel. The biggest risk of having this level of money grabbing cronyism is that it leaves a void where effective governance should have been and, at the moment, the "Left" is waiting in the wings to jump in and take over. I say "Left" because they are socialist only in name. Opportunistic power hungry money grabbers is the right term.

Rogue Trooper 11/6/2009 9:55:40 AM
@anonymous3...your comment is cynical to say the least. The previous regime only looked after the white people, we know that, it's no secret...in fact the system had a name, it was APARTHEID and that system was brought down by a collective and no it was not JUST the ANC but also various individuals and more than 50% of the voting white population...remember the referendum? But that doesn't resonate nor matter to you clearly cos you only see us attacking your precious ANC yet cannot see that we are not attacking the establishment but the incompetance of certain comrades (to use the ANC outdated rhetoric). The current regime has been in government for 15 years and during all that time did nothing to increase the capacity that Eskom operates with...NOTHING only breakdown repairs, no infrastructural upgrades or new station despite being warned by some people within Eskom as far back as 1998. The ANC thought it more important to spend more than R40billion on weapons to defend us from...well I don't really know perhaps they were afraid the annual Sardine run was actually a recon team from the USA checking to see if we had more oil in Mossel Bay than we were letting on and felt it prudent to up our defences.
We are now faced with increases of 45% for the next 3 years excluding the 33% increase we recently sucked up. That amounts to 168% over the next 3 years!!! Why oh why could they not have introduced YEARLY increases of 10-12% over the last 15 years or worst case 17% increases over the last 10 years when they were warned that the infrastructure capacity could not accomodate the increase in demand and that it would be advisable to begin commisioning the mothballed power stations and begin constructing new stations back in 1998??? I know why...INCOMPETANCE and the SA famous past time SELF ENRICHMENT!!! Now we as the consumer just have to suck it up and pay or suffer the rolling blackouts if we don't cough up yet more money to a mismanaged parastatal entity.
So please STOP blaming apartheid for ALL the ills of the country cos that argument is wearing so thin that even the international community don't buy it anymore. Face up to the fact that for the past 15 years we have had nothing but struggle heros deployed to ministerial positions of which in most cases they have no clue about the portfolio they are expected to manage. We are now bearing the brunt of the promises made to the struggle heros by the ANC elite, ensuring them that they would be handsomely rewarded for their sacrifices made during the struggle. I believe it would have been better to have given all the struggle heros a payout of millions each all those years ago and not government appointments because our government departments and parastatals would have had heads that actually knew what they were doing and managed the entities correctly and ushered us into a sustainable future as opposed to the potential dark future.

ZAPPA@ROUGE TROOPER 11/6/2009 10:55:24 AM
Well said, we should do away with passports to enter this circus and start charging entrance fees.

simon 11/10/2009 12:44:33 PM
@RogueTrooper 09:55
Sorry, but your history and your arithmetic both fail.
Apartheid did not look just after white people, it looked after all, separately, hence the name. The only argument is allocation of resources, much the same as now where 10% of the population pay taxes to support the remaining 90%. Decay is inevitable.
Arithmetic-wise, 33% followed by 3 years of 45% increase is a 400% increase, certainly not 168% !!!! It's called COMPOUND INTEREST.
