Is democracy disappearing?

by Mark
2009-10-28 13:16

It doesn't take a subtle eye to see that democracy is slowing being dissolved in this country. One thinks to the analogy of the frog that is thrown into hot water and immediately jumps out. However, if he is put in cold water and slowly heated, he will sit there and eventually boil to death. An objective external observer would easily be able to spot the slow but steady corrosion of South African society at the hands of the powers that drive it.

The problem stems from the total lack of accountability present in our society. Democracy is not merely a government of elected officials who represent a country's populace. It is a government that is fully and constantly accountable to the people, a government that permanently has to validate their position and prove that they deserve to hold the power that commands so many lives.

So how does accountability get lost? All that is necessary for this to happen is for the leader to declare that criticism is unwarranted, or for the leader to establish a power base that makes accountability meaningless even if it is present. In South Africa, both are widely present.

South Africa's democracy stems from a fierce desire to eradicate the evil of racism and give governance to the majority who were oppressed by the minority. This creates the silent rule that if you criticise the new government, you are not supportive of the new good in the country, and by default are evil. This unpleasant association is the initial loophole which provided an almost free reign on the country for over a decade, and silenced all critics.

Like all tyrants, they declare that if you are not one of us, you are one of them - thus creating a polarized two-world view of the state of things. What they conveniently forgot was that criticism is one of the most essential pillars that support a democracy. It regulates corruption, excess and deficiencies and provides a true voice to everyone. With relative ease, the ANC made criticism undesirable, and the hallmark of a racist or supporter of the previous regime, and thus they ran and continue to run, unchecked.

Julius Malema applies the same tactic; a tactic used by tyrants from as far back as can be remembered. He makes statements which openly state that people who are not on his side are enemies of the State. Those who do not support Zuma should be killed. Blacks who are not in the ANC are not blacks. Once again he works on the fear in people's minds that they will be categorised as the unhelpful, evil opposition because according to him, you are either one of us, or one of them. The idea that debate can occur between people and contain disagreements and agreements not contained by party banners is utterly incomprehensible to him.

The end result is the silence of criticism. This has led to the degradation of every facet of our society, which is grossly mismanaged, either by incompetence or corruption to the point that all departments without exception are bordering on collapse. Almost every sector of the country has been on strike this year, and riots due to poor service delivery are higher than they have ever been.

Corruption levels are amongst the highest in the world, once again due to the lack of accountability. Politicians, the least accountable of all, openly lead extravagant lifestyles and spent enormous amounts of public money on private luxuries. Very few people ever see justice for these crimes, and this further reinforces the untouchable culture already infecting our society.

Danger signs abound in our country - subtle changes by the ruling party that undermine the most basic principles of democracy. The precept that an opposing thought is the characteristic of an enemy is one of the most offensive scenarios in an established democracy, but is commonplace here. Without accountability, and with a greater chasm between leaders and the regulation of their power, the next logical step is the subversion of the Constitution, and then its annihilation.

Famous tyrants ruthlessly enslave their countries by performing all of this in a short period of time, and the world gasps and remembers them with scorn. It is, however, the devious tyrant that slowly alters, slowly subverts and slowly corrupts. That way instead of a great chorus of protest that would blast them away, they are left with a multitude of whispers and very little protest. We are frogs sitting in water... the question is, how hot is the water?

So true but majority of what you are saying doesn't exist in Pedi - therefore it can't exist ;-)

Roland 10/28/2009 1:26:43 PM
It *is* getting a little warmer, now you mention it...

Wise old owl 10/28/2009 1:30:41 PM
Very well written article - a true reflection of what is currently taking place in our country. Where to from here?

Sganja@Mark 10/28/2009 1:30:51 PM
"the question is, how hot is the water?" which water are you refering too?

GT 10/28/2009 1:31:43 PM
Mark I think that democracy is an idea that we as South Africa, initially thought we could inherit and adopt. The idea of democracy is a Western idea, and although I do think there is a place in every part of the world for true democracy, I also understand that in countries where governments lie and steal, and so called leaders try and incite the masses to take up arms, those countries will struggle to become democratic.

It's up to the current and future leaders of our country, to stop taking and taking, and pursuing their own communist agendas, and to start being true leaders, who care for the people ...

South Africa, presently, IS NOT A DEMOCRACY !!! We don't fit the definition.

uncle Bob 10/28/2009 1:32:17 PM
I am sure you are smoking something where ever you. Democracy will never die as long as we have people like me, Malema, Zille, Muthelezi, because will all talk rubbish, because we are in a democratic country.

oral 10/28/2009 1:32:42 PM
This is a very well writen article and has loads of truth in it! How much can the ANC & ANCYL carry on with hate speech and squandering millions of TAX money until the president shows some back bone and fires these people ..... if he has not done it yet he will never!

This country is so obsessed with race and especially Black people obessed with the White man that it will never be cured, and why I say that is becuase form the tiny percenatge of white people in this country all you hear from the ANC & ANCYL is racist this racist that!!! Wake up people the ANC is in charge and the country is 90% Black so get off the OLD RACIST TUNE its getting so pathetic and boring, same old tune year after year ...... take responsibility for yourself and get off this evrybody owes me and I owe myself nothing attitude!! Do you hear the Chinese or the Indians or the Europeans shouting RACISM RACISM .... ????

fraud 10/28/2009 1:32:44 PM
Has anyone been arrested for critisizing the ANC? Have political parties been banned? Being defensive does not necessarily imply intolerance. If Malema makes the headlines everytime he sneazes, and is critisized for not saying "excuse me", it's his right too to defend himself and question those who critisize him. I think our schools need to have a thorough course on democracy. At the moment, just like racism, we all seem to have different definitions. Very few governments in the world allow what our media and the general public say about our government. Even the so called champions of democracy (western countries) do not allow the levels of hate against them that our government allows. In the US, if a person is constantly being extremely negative and shows signs of hate towards the US government, they are assumed to be terrorists and are dealt with accordingly.

GT @ everyone 10/28/2009 1:37:16 PM
The South African public should start some type of public fund. The money to be used solely to challenge stupid government decisions and misspending by government in the highest courts. I can see all the attorneys licking their lips already.

Seriously though, if we threw money at the problem, and had the best legal teams challenge government in the courts, I'm sure they wouldn't be allowed to get away with so many of the things they currently do.

Again, our problem is, WE DON'T STAND TOGETHER ... People wasting their votes on non-impact small political parties, are just clueless. COPE, UDM and ID need to join forces. The rest should be absorbed into the other 2, namely DA and ANC. 3 strong parties is all we need, I get so annoyed when these smaller, no chance in hell, parties keep watering down our collective power with voters votes ...

Noel 10/28/2009 1:37:54 PM
The writing is on the wall.Everything that is stated is true. Somewhere along the line we will have to take a stand and say enough is enough, but there are too many out there who will not stand together.

BAAS 10/28/2009 1:38:05 PM

Start again for the begining, slowwwwly....

MarcP 10/28/2009 1:40:12 PM
Look at Zim. They landed up getting burnt. When does a person know when it is time to leave? If the doody hits the proverbial fan then it will be too late. People living in Zim landed up leaving with only the clothes on their backs.

If the majority of the people continue giving their undivided support to the ANC, what makes people in the minority (those who can see the path that RSA is heading down) think that they will be able to stop it?

All one needs to do is look back on the news since Zuma has become president and see how things have gotten worse.

People going to RSA for the soccer world cup need to fear the criminals and the ones in uniform (the police) who are equally as lethal.

Well written Mark

Bobo 10/28/2009 1:43:56 PM
my advice to you is get out of the water before it gets hot if ever it will get hot. I'm sure other frogs will do the same as well. I seem to agree with you on some points though but just leave the ANCYL leader alone, he speaks about what you don't like and that does not make him stupid. I know exactly why so many people can't finish a sentence without quoting Malema, well done Malema and one day you will be leader of this country and all your critics will eat their humble pie. I agree with JZ and as a ruling party we can formally endorse you as one of our greatest leader ANC has ever produced.

FJ 10/28/2009 1:44:53 PM
Great article Mark.

I think the biggest mistake the West made was to try and impose democracy on Africa. I can, however, not really think of an alternative.

Tumelo 10/28/2009 1:46:59 PM
Surely you are drunk, so early in the afternoon? Alcohol warms up your body, you feel the heat and suspect some goverment out to get you? The Shiceka Proposal futher suggests two things in terms of goverment acoountability and cohesion; the simultaneous national elections and constituency based electoral system. Hope this sobers you up!

Sambok 10/28/2009 1:47:09 PM
No Mark, the question is: who is boiling the pot?
According to the election results, 30 million South Africans are stoking the fire under us.

Angela. 10/28/2009 1:47:18 PM
Brilliant article, absolutely spot on!!

Joe 10/28/2009 1:47:47 PM
A democracy is not accountable to the people! Once voted into power, the government can do what they want. In a REPUBLIC, the goverment has to answer to the people if they don't follow the law (the constitution) something which the ANC is NOT doing! SA has no democracy other than a democratic election. After the election, SA is a DICTATORSHIP!!!

It always happens in a one-party state 10/28/2009 1:49:16 PM
The problem always comes when one party stays in government a little bit too long, look what happened under the NP rule, and now the ANC is gradually going to the same end result although not through the same route as the NP. When a party stays too long, they begin to forget what was supposed to be done in the first place and they go around in circles, before we all know it, corruption sky-rockets and the same party starts splitting as everyone wants a piece of the cake. - Sello

Pangea 10/28/2009 1:49:58 PM
Yes Mark, democracy is dissapearing and so is our human rights. We will regret for ever voting in Zuma and his cosatu and SACP friends. But that will only transpire on the people of this country when we sit in our bunkers enduring a civil war or joining the string of desperate refugees trying to flee the country.

Alien Dude 10/28/2009 1:53:15 PM

chris 10/28/2009 1:53:56 PM
Spot on. We won't be like Zim which disintegrated in a year, but SA is on a slow decline an we'll get there eventually. Perhaps slightly sooner than we think if Malema becomes president - despite how ridiculous that sounds it is a very real possibility. We desperately need an educated black leader to mobolise those in our society who are genuinely committed to democracy. Where is he/she?

Lou 10/28/2009 1:54:15 PM
Democracy is not just about voting and accountability. Certain processes of participation are in the constitution to allow all citizens and groups to have opportunity to participate in the democracy. The process of closing anti-Zuma ANC branches prior to Polokwane is an example of how even ANC member's rights were violated. Seperation of party and State is another principle that defines our Democracy. Once elected politicians are accountable to the Constitution, not Luthuli house. Service delivery protests to "recall of redeployment" is similarly non-democratic. We have an electoral system where you vote people into power. Currently COSATU & Co support the ANC to get into government, then they use underhand tactics to replace elected officials with their hand-picked ones that were not elected. They are running a quasi-communist system within our democracy to manipulate opinion. I have records of ANC members who are health care professionals who were excluded from ANC meetings where NHI was discussed. I find it tragically ironic that ANC members are tollerating this tail wagging the dog.

GT @Bobo 10/28/2009 1:54:55 PM
What do you think the ANC will do when Comrade Malema has outlived his usefulness for the party ??? Think about it, do you really think Julius will amount to anything? Let's ask his wood working teacher shall we ???

keno 10/28/2009 1:55:54 PM
Bobo, you just have proved the point. Nowhere in the article does he refer to Malema being stupid, but you jump up and down saying that he's not stupid!. You are very weird.

Angela. 10/28/2009 1:56:40 PM
Bobo, it is a sad day when you endorse Malema to lead your country, into oblivion I might add!! Do you believe that outsiders will invest in a country where the leader consistently spouts racist vile comments agaist his critics and white people in general, do you believe that SA can grow as a country if there is no outside investment, do you believe that Malema's 'hand out' mentality, which is being spread across SA very quickly, is going to be sustained across the country when most of your tax base, which funds every single aspect of this country is eroded due to lack of job creation and closure of companies due to emmigration, do you honestly believe that he will do SA any good whatsoever?

you remind me of a taxi driver in that you have no clue whatsoever about CONSEQUENCE, or is it because there is no word in Pedi for it? if the only reason you support Malema is because he spews what we dont wanna hear, then thank god i will never be your son or wife.PS there is only one thing more stupid than Malema and that is those that worship him, just like you do!

SimonP@Tumelo 10/28/2009 2:11:12 PM
Once again you quote what the ANC tell you they are doing not what they are doing. Head of a municipality wastes/loses R6billion and keeps their job. Accountability my arse.

SA Critic 10/28/2009 2:14:17 PM
I think the inherent problem with SA is that it has to big a "minority" just big enough to cause a problem for the ruling party. If SA had, lets say only 1% whites instead of 10% then we would probably be dead by now. Luckily though we also have coloured and indian people to help back our minority.

The systemic violence on the minority community is starting to reach epic proportions. This could lead one to believe that this is a "plan" erected by the government to cause our departure from these shores. One can clearly see from policies employed by our government that they do not care for the minorities well being or safety. It only focuses on the majority (and rightly so), but to lift on group is to sideline another...

@Bobo 10/28/2009 2:14:17 PM
You say malema is not stupid, tell me then him blaming everything from failure of the ASA to his speeding fines on apartheid makes him what exactly? Intelligent I dont think so.

What a dilema! Sadly enough these masses come 2014 will still vote for the ANC. What sickens me even worse is the whole blatant way of going about milking the taxpayer..they have this "yeah i stole the money so wot ur gona do about it" attitude. My optimism 4 this country flew out the window a long time ago.. What a sad reality!! Im black but i dont condone what these guys are doing.. Blade Nzimande and his 1.2m merc, isnt he supposed 2 be a communits? maybe that applies when ur broke!!

Seagull @ Bobo 10/28/2009 2:24:33 PM
The scary thing is that you actually believe that he (JM) cares about you.....

Eles 10/28/2009 2:27:14 PM
I agree with SimonP how the hell they can justify retaining that useless mayor is beyond me and it doesn't end there. Sadly it is the ANC group themselves who fail to hold themselves accountable the rest of us do and I personally hold each and every ANC member and voter responsible for the incompetence pervading this country at present. I cannot sympathise with those underpriviliged when they continue to vote for their situation and go backwards - honestly I am been fleeced at all turns in this country with tax and services costs inbetween been told to leave the land so if you really think I am sympathetic to those who have less - well my immediate answer would be not anymore, my tears are dry to the same sung song of woe created by they themselves.

Jann 10/28/2009 2:34:05 PM
The bulk of the population don't appear to want accountability. They openly support the fancy cars and lavish lifestyles even when they have problems with service delivery etc. The government know this and know that they can count on their votes next time around. The government can continue as they are for as long as they like and nobody will stop them.

JC 10/28/2009 2:35:44 PM

ZION PAY@MARK 10/28/2009 2:54:49 PM
Congrats Mark, the piece is perfect. I do have a point to moot concerning our friend Julius. From what I know and hear about him is that he does not have much gray matter. Your description of his modus operandi re the masses does not quite fit. It seems Malema may be using phrases and catch terms to move the masses(bulls,,t) He does not seem to have much knowlege of mass psychology
Given his past he was a bottom feeder.

Can anyone who supports Malema tell me where they think all the assets to be taken from whites and given to blacks will actually go? A. Divided equally among the PDIs
B. Straight into the pockets of Malema and his close buddies.
given the likeness of Malema to Mugabe I think I know who would benefit.

@Bobo. Man oh man, there are levels of gullability and stupdity, but you, my friend, must be at the lowest point of the ladder on both counts! I always wondered whether it was possible to live without a brain, but you have just proved that one can? A scientific marvel indeed!

MarkH 10/28/2009 3:05:29 PM
Excellent article, I couldn't have stated it better. I too see the danger signs all around me from the corrupt & wasteful politicos to the lazy civil servants who act as if they are answerable to no one. Indeed the water is getting hot and my biggest concern at the moment is that the police, now that they've been given licenses to kill, seem to be getting in on the act at a rate of knots.
Without checks & balances of some kind the citizens are fast becoming soft targets for both the police and the criminals i.e. Citizens being attacked by police - in uniform, police selling drugs, police moonlighting, with weapons,as ATM robbers, police targetting tourists......... the list goes on and on.
Democracy dies when both the police / armed forces & the criminals realise that the public are easier targets, note the happenings in Guinea and Zim lately. We are staring into the abyss, time to stand back and take stock isn't it?

LEGEND OF THE GAME 10/28/2009 3:10:55 PM

A Qoute from Robert Heinlein:

A perfect democracy, a "warm body" democracy in which every adult may vote and all votes count equally, has no internal feedback for self-correction.... [O]nce a state extends the franchise to every warm body, be he producer or parasite, that day marks the beginning of the end of the state. For when the plebs discover that they can vote themselves bread and circuses without limit and that the productive members of the body politic cannot stop them, they will do so, until the state bleeds to death, or in its weakened condition the state succumbs to an invader — the barbarians enter Rome.

HVR 10/28/2009 3:25:43 PM
@Sello - I concur, there has been many cases in history. As almost all ex-NP member are/were ANC members it is clear that they are learning from the best.

just me @ tarras 10/28/2009 3:26:39 PM
I know the answer!!! Surely, the pedi for moron is.... "Malema" I want a million t-shirts.... will give them away to moron supporters that can't read, but will see juli-ass' face and wear the t-shirt proudly!!! What a laugh! thanks man...

If you should happen to get a job that sends you out of the country on a regular basis for about 2 weeks at a time, the decay will become clearly visible to you...

Gogga 10/28/2009 3:34:37 PM
I want a T-shirt like that and we can make dart boards with his face on it .. damn there is a business opportunity for you now imagine the creativity Malema will open to us with his stupid mouth and the money you can make LOL good one Tarras

Reading discussion boards like this just makes me glad I'm not in SA anymore and don't have to worry about the clowns running things. I'm not racist by the way, just don't want to live in the crime riddled corrupt , decaying country anymore.Black people can rant and rave all they like but without the whiteys the country is doomed. My advice to everyone who isn't happy is to leave, SA isn't the only sunny , beautiful place in the world.Leave SA to Malema and his kind and let them boil to death without dragging all the good people (of all races) down with them.

samsam@SIMONRONP/ELES/GLOCK2C 10/28/2009 3:37:02 PM
I thought you guys, you will update us on corruption taking place in the private sector specifically ADCORP and extradition of Tennenboum and his lawyer

Bobo says it all 10/28/2009 3:39:37 PM
Just read the comment from Bobo and you will know that the time to leave has already passed...... I left 4 years ago and as an outsider looking in, it is so obvious how fast the deteriation is, it's no longer a question of if SA will slide, it's a question of when.

BLACKsoWHAT! 10/28/2009 3:57:55 PM
Good Article!! more than anything i liked the fact that no mention of the popular phrase "Masses" was prevalent...but i'm sure the comments will not dissapoint.

Karen 10/28/2009 4:03:37 PM
For something to disappear it has to have existed at some point in time - democracy is not disappearing in South Africa - it has never existed. The ANC government claimed to be democratic, but nothing it has ever done has been democratic except to hold elections. I don't think they understand what democracy is and think that as long as the majority have voted for them, they were democratically elected and therefore have free reign to enrich themselves and do as they please. They are in fact a democractically elected, comunist government - a bit strange. Maybe that is what they mean by the "African Way".

Hopeful! 10/28/2009 4:10:41 PM
Mark, this is an excellent article and you've certainly hit the nail on the head. The other question is, what are we going to do to stop the pot from boiling?

Ray 10/28/2009 4:14:25 PM
With a name like BOBO one cannot expect anything better to come from between his two small ears.Like the rest of his type, they all think alike, that is why Africa and not only South Africa is in a shambles.NO one in this country has the mental capacity to fix it,the rot has set in,thanks to the people who has the mentality of BOBO.IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME.

Boerseun 10/28/2009 4:34:56 PM
Well written mate. I agree with someone who said we need to take government on in the courts, but let us see how many here will offer to put money in the kitty. No businesses will, that's for sure. Even if this happens, government is slowly interfering with the courts as well and as has ben shown in several cases, the jutice system has failed us most, when we needed it most.

stevie 10/28/2009 4:49:37 PM
Very well written article!!!
It seems that everyone has forgotten what our democratically elected leader JZ said after ousting Thabo...."Nothing is going to change". So guys, whats the problem? The anc got shot of Thabo, they got JZ's corruption charges to go away, terminally ill fake-shake got a "get of of jail free card" and my, his health has improved! Townships are striking because of "poor service delivery". Thats right, "nothing is going to change" so the ministers will simply keep going about doing nothing and living the high life.
If only SA could get 50,1% opposition majority, things could be sooooo different.
Uncle bob said that the masses gave him the mandate to do what he likes and just look where that got his OWN people, I guess that JZ and Co feel the same!

samsam@THULI 10/28/2009 4:53:46 PM
politically blind, when you make cross in the ballot paper you dont vote for a person, you vote for the policy, stupidity is within you

Deon 10/28/2009 4:55:08 PM
It is clear to me that South Africa is leaning closer and closer to civil war. What do people outside of SA think about the situation? Are there any Croatian or Bosnian people that can add their perspective to what is happening here in SA? I'd like to hear from overseas people that have lived through or experienced a civil war to tell us if they see the same signs of imminent disaster in SA? Comments anyone?

NvV 10/28/2009 5:04:10 PM
Author, you stated the obvious but at least it helps people vent their frustration in the columns. Looking from the outside in with the benefit to measure against my current environment I’m now living in, it is clear you frogs that stayed in the water will have to jump soon or slowly turn into prawns.

Alex 10/28/2009 5:19:18 PM
Great article. Our government should lead by example, "comrades", I mean politicians, should be accountable for their wrong doing just like you and I. The followers of the ruling party will think to themselves if they can get away with fraud and corruption and lying, so can I. Look at the carnage on our roads, ... it started with the Taxi drivers, ... now its not only the Taxi drivers. Lead by example !

miekie 10/28/2009 5:19:55 PM
wow!! i am busy reading the long walk to freedom by Nelson Mandela, and, as you pointed out, I do not see in the current government which he states that he was fighting for, because, what i see, is racism, apartheid, because you are too white, because you are too afrikaans, because you are too manly, whatever. In his book, he said that the ANC fought for equality, no racism, no apartheid, but, I do not see this, and that makes me sad, because, this is such a beautiful land, but the people are too greedy.

Democracy 10/28/2009 5:23:55 PM
A point and a quote:

1) Five people are sitting in a room. Three are men. One of them proposes a new law making it legal for a man to rape a woman (under certain circumstances of course). The three men vote yea. What happens next is "democracy" in action.

2)"The majority is never right. Never, I tell you! That's one of these lies in society that no free and intelligent man can ever help rebelling against. Who are the people that make up the biggest proportion of the population --- the intelligent ones or the fools? I think we can agree it's the fools, no matter where you go in this world, it's the fools that form the overwhelming majority."
Henrik Ibsen

Quintin 10/28/2009 5:37:49 PM
Hitler was also able to inspire the masses and let’s just think what happen then…….. Is Malema the South African Hitler in waiting??

Ed 10/28/2009 6:09:01 PM
Has anyone ever actually done the frog experiment ? Or is it just a hoax ? Please I need the scientist name, institution & date that actually did the experiment. You cannot just make a statement about an experiment but not have the facts to prove it.
My opinion is that I honestly doubt this experiment was ever done.

Ed 10/28/2009 8:39:41 PM
Do any of you for one minute think that the populists understand a word of this article? Criticise as much as we would like to, but at the and of the day it is time for us to tackle the problem with the same basic rhetoric that the masses can understand.

Gavin 10/28/2009 10:29:24 PM
I tried to get my girlfriend and I out the country and I am envious of the ones who have. There is no democracy, I saw that long ago. I saw the boiling long ago too. Problem is that I have a criminology honours degree (cum laude)and never once got a chance to get a job related to my degree. I got told once, to my face, that it was because I was white. I have not developed any further skills since. The point is, if you are South African, without specific skills, especially in these later years, you are already trapped in the glass. No good country wants us. I pray for the trapped, no matter what skin colour.

@ChapStick@Bobo@Tumelo 10/28/2009 10:35:35 PM
Here's something - when the ANC ran the Cape Town City, mayor Nomaindia Mfeketo (who was less than useless in most respects, and whose CEO is up for huge corruption) suggested that we paint the two disused cooling towers on the N2 in funky colours and patterns. My, what a visionary leader.
So much solved so simply. Such fun.

@samsam 10/28/2009 10:38:40 PM
Corruption in the private sector is also not condoned. Must be rooted out. But the difference, my friend, is that government is using OUR money, OUR taxes, which we have NO CHOICE but to pay. In the private sector you takes your chance as they say. Caveat emptor as they say. And the private sector is profit-driven whereas government is not there for making a profit but for spending the fiscus wisely in order to run a country well. Very big difference that most folk understand.

GS 10/29/2009 12:11:51 AM
Good article, I can see that not all are blinded by government bling.

Is there a Pedi word for democracy?

Exiled in the Snow 10/29/2009 4:17:06 AM
Me and my family yearn to come back to the country that we love, and everyday I scoar every newspaper on the net for positive signs that things are getting better so that we can pack our bags, but the things that I currently read in the papers chill me to the bone..people who want to return to the republic is instantaneously put off..how frustrating is it that our wonderful country is being run into the ground by these buffoons!

Nicholas 10/29/2009 4:47:34 AM
Democracy in Africa? What a quaint idea! Democracy is for civilizations. Africa is rather destined for monarchy's and dictatorships.

AbrahamL 10/29/2009 8:34:19 AM
We never had a proper democracy to start off with. The ANC made sure of that by rejecting the wisdom of policital advisors when the constitution was set up. They wanted to move to this totalitarian situation right from the start by refusing to have the people elected to parliament based on their actual representation at local level, i.e. being accountable to the people on the ground, not the party.
So now the party can be hijacked at the executive level as happened here and "democracy" is down the tubes, with a mere 500 ANC supporters choosing who gets to govern. The party gets to pick yes-men who gets lots of expensive cars, houses, flights etc. as reward, as long as they tow the line and do not criticise the party.

Batman 10/29/2009 8:37:05 AM
As I have said on many occassions, this country of ours is NOT a democracy but a ONE PARTY STATE, it fits all the definitions. And my biggist fear is that its getting worse. One of the comments abouve about all the smaller parties getting together is unfortunately our only chance for survival for ALL skin colours...

Thomas C. K. 10/29/2009 11:39:15 AM
S.A has a perfect democratic frame work but the core is decaying .A country with great hope of develpoping has become just a survivor in the world. How many houses can you build with out corruption if only the ANC ministers give up their luxuary cars and travellings.

Shells 10/29/2009 12:29:00 PM
I think alot of the people that vote ANC would love to vote for someone else that will actually make a difference in their lives but they're too frigging scared...so how do we make them unafraid?! AND what do we do about the ANC burning ballot papers??!! My maid's brother worked at a polling station and saw it happening!

ChapStick@comment posted 10:35:35 PM 10/29/2009 12:38:40 PM
Chuckle...Chuckle...thanks.

griet 10/29/2009 12:44:14 PM
The taxpayer in South Africa is being hunted and threatened like common criminals, while communist ministers live in opulence. The masses will always vote for the party that hands out grants, houses, promises free medical treatment, etc. They believe the revenue stream is bottomless- young people shouls certainly try to leave- wait for next year, when Gordham is going to start raising taxes and add new ones to try and fund all this extravagance. Democracy can only excist in a country with a high level of education and employment. We have neither, so it is the poliburo who lives in wealth, the poor are being thown bones and the working class bears the brunt, without having a say. Even if every single taxpayer did not vote ANC, it would have no impact.

Renier 10/30/2009 10:15:00 AM
Warming up so gradually most don't realize it's already close to boiling point.

TT, I hope you have your rose-coloured spectacles; they're an essential piece of equipment for anyone intending to stay in SA.

What did a thinking person actually expect to happen other than a transformation into a failed state - Mandela Tutu and their so called rainbow democracy are a complete failure

Hans 11/5/2009 11:47:06 AM
Great article! The interaction therafter is more chilling - bit of a wake up call....

Ingrid Schneyder 11/10/2009 11:44:16 AM
Where is democracy when the rich are getting richer and the poor is getting poorer? When government get huge increases but argue when labourers ask for 11%? When our president is a criminal and rapist, sleeps in a warm luxury bed at night?
