'Let him play'

by Debbie
2009-11-12 11:00

There I am, blissfully driving into Durban CBD contently listening to 5FM's sports report when I hear it. Yet another contradiction by the court jester of Sports Ministry, Mike Stofile. He is apparently questioning the inclusion of Tendai "Beast" Mtawarira in the Bok team as Beast comes from Zimbabawe. As far as reports go Beast has now been kicked out of the team over this, but I could not find anything that denies or confirms this.

Now pardon my ignorance but is this same man not the one who keeps harping on about transformation in sport focusing his clearly-short-span-of-attention on rugby? I nearly slammed into the very unsuspecting driver in front of me while trying real hard not to utter words that might shock a very reserved passenger. The latter did not work as I let rip.

This is the same man who has already played 15 tests in the Green and Gold, with reasonable success at that. He is an asset to South African rugby and the team yet now suddenly Mr It decides to drop a bomb. Beast's application for South African citizenship is currently still being processed and knowing our very incapable public system this will take forever (if his application hasn't been torn up already).

In the meantime ridiculous rugby laws prevent a star player like Mtawarira to assist in taking our country to victory against a strong France. Tomorrow we have to hear their never-ending wailing about transformation?

This brings me to another quick point. CJ van der Linde has been called up to the Bok squad. He is currently playing on "greener pastures" for Leinster, Ireland. Now pardon my blonde ignorance. but wasn't it decided not too long ago that should you decide to play overseas you not be allowed to play for the national team? CJ last played for the Boks in August of 2008. That is a year and three months ago. Beast has been playing his heart out for the past year or so.

Yet one "rule" gets bent and another overseen? I am more confused than a Cheetah supporter at a Currie Cup Final at Loftus. He blatantly ensures a black player gets kicked out of the team over some rules enforced by him and his council of clowns. Yet there is no mention of or attempt to ban CJ van der Linde to play against rules that the coach instated not too long ago? Why not call up Francois Steyn and Jean de Villiers as well then?

Before the racist folks around here start attacking me, I'm a white Afrikaans-speaking woman who is absolutely fanatical about rugby. That said I am also really fed up with the contradictions that go on in the sport. I am tired of idiots trying to run something they are 100% clueless about. It is like appointing a kindergarten teacher with no mechanical experience as service centre manager for Mercedes Benz. The results are bound to be catastrophic.

I know it might be hard for Mike-ek-kan-nie Stofile to fathom but rules are rules. If you can bend one you must be allowed to bend others. Or else you're only caking your own face in mud.

I think it is high time that President Jacob Zuma enforces his new motto of "zero tolerance for corruption" in sports as well. Because this is all it is. It is time to clean house, tidy up and start sticking to all rules. Not before that happens will we be able to truly enjoy what our athletes can offer us and the rest of the world.

All these 'previously disadvantaged' 'Minestahs & CEO's' are like a bunch of Bulls in a Crystal shop...!!

GT @ Debbie and all 11/12/2009 11:07:12 AM
It seems that only sports bodies run by government buddies, are protected from government interference (eg. Athletics South Africa, and SA Football). It's very hypocritical. Sports that actually do well like cricket and rugby, are envisaged by the ANC as "white sports". That's the only reason why government interferes. They're hopeless...

Beast is becoming a rugby hero in South Africa. We couldn't ask for any more African if we tried. Do I sense some government racism here, some zenophobia because Beast is from Zimbabwe???

Come on ANC, get a life !!! If you're gonna stick your racist noses into sport, then why not first tackle the mess with ASA and SAFA ??? Those sports are in a shambles ...

Typical racist ANC

Point Blank@debbie 11/12/2009 11:12:59 AM
Debbie, I understand you frustrations and I share you sentiments regarding the topsy turvy rules that go with most sporting bodies in this country. However, I stopped supporting you when your criticism became mocking, demeaning and insulting. By all means express your dissatisfaction but you will get no sympathy, and in fact instead get hostility, from non whites. I believe you failed miserably in bringing a good strong argument to the table that would result in constructive debate. Now all you will manage to achieve is the usual racist banter, YOU have now enabled this article to degenerate into another mud fight.

LSA 11/12/2009 11:21:30 AM
What about bloody Earl Rose being in the squad, most useless rugby player I've ever seen

morena 11/12/2009 11:26:48 AM
@debbie BIG BIG BIG TROUBLE FOR RUGBY one thing is for sure if his south african citizen is only being processed "NOW" then, sprinboks are in trouble and they might even loose their Tri Nations cup and all other games that the beast played in as they were using a foreing national in their team not a south african and all the blame you be shouldered by SA rugby but heyy you never do any wrong so shift the blame to sports ministry

morena 11/12/2009 11:29:25 AM
how is the ANC being racist here all they asking is, is he a south african citizen if no the he shouldn't have been in the squad in the first place, SA rugby messed up big time not the anc, foreing nationals don't just play for any country they wish to play for they need to have citizenship before they play, THERE IS NOTHING ABOUT WHAT THE ANC HAS DONE,

@Point Blank@debbie 11/12/2009 11:33:17 AM
I rest my case with your comment!!!!!!!!!!

show 11/12/2009 11:35:36 AM
yawn...*sigh*...

GT @ morena 11/12/2009 11:37:04 AM
Let me ask you this. Does SA Rugby, or the ANC government, process ID documents or citizenship status? Have you actually tried to get a new ID book or passport lately ???

Seems you're also looking at this just from one point of view ...

GT @ morena 2 11/12/2009 11:38:13 AM
AND having said that, I do agree with you that SA Rugby should make sure of someone's citizen status, BEFORE including that person in a sport. So yes, if it turns out that they didn't do their homework, then someone at SA Rugby needs to be accountable !!!

POST MY COMMENTS PLEASE 11/12/2009 11:38:49 AM
I even borrowed a magnifying glass to see if the author mentioned the ANC in this article!!!!!!!!

marcel 11/12/2009 11:42:51 AM
How's about we confirm or deny the story first then, before we make any comments?

Joeman 11/12/2009 11:42:54 AM
You are one stupid soul. A foreigner needs to have the adpted country's citizenship before playing for that country. One day you are complaining about many africans getting SA ID's, next day you complain about SA home affairs delaying granting ID to a forein african. How hypocrity! Now you blame the ANC. So do you want the Gov to grant ID's to all foreign africans in the country or just those who'll help your favorite sport?

LSA@morena 11/12/2009 11:43:40 AM
What the hell do you know??? According to international rugby laws, a player must not have played for his country of birth in a senior international match and he must have resided and played in his new country for 3 years. Beast has met those criteria, so Makhenkesi Stofile can go to hell because Beast has met those requirements!!!!!

zolani 11/12/2009 11:43:54 AM
I love the Beast, But must agree trasformation is not about colour, it is about allowing disadvantaged South Africans, a foot up, weather I agree or not is not the point, but rather, stick to the rules you made. now with the 3 Zim players, it shows its not about uplifting SA Citizens its about colour, I for one would love to see him play

SimonP 11/12/2009 11:44:26 AM
Ministers should stick out of selection in all sports.
as for banning players that play overseas from playing for South Africa, LUDICROUS.

MC 11/12/2009 11:44:47 AM
Was it not one of the European countries we are touring that questioned his inclusion because he does not have a South African passport? Not sure, but I guess rules are rules eventhough I like Beast and he fully deserves a Green & Gold jersey.

Joeman 11/12/2009 11:48:03 AM
Remember, a citizeship to Mtawarira is an extra vote for the ANC. Come on, keep on recruiting members for us.

Patriot @morena 11/12/2009 11:50:15 AM
I cant believe im saying this, you are 100%correct

classof2006 11/12/2009 11:56:00 AM
All I see lady, is your massive support as a Sharks Fan, The actual loyalty to the Boks, is not there, because if you were a true to your statement, you would want the best possible BOK in the team, and as good as the beast is. He is not the best possible Prop in SA Rugby for the Job,

Jo 11/12/2009 12:00:16 PM
Yaaaawn....mmmm.....

Eles 11/12/2009 12:01:51 PM
If the likes of Bennie can be brought back for soccer then I don't have a problem with CJ. I like the beast but he should have applied for citizenship earlier. Having said that Mike is the biggest waste of space and perfect example of a useless BEE appointment. I doubt if he even understands the rules of the sport he interferes in.

@DEBBIE 11/12/2009 12:05:24 PM
Debbie, Please lets stick to the rules, we cant complain about, all the things in SA that are wrong, because people break the rules, now you are going out in Public and are saying stuff the rules, Besides your true love is the Sharks, thats why you want him in

kolobe 11/12/2009 12:15:26 PM
clearly the writer is a moron.saru let a zim play for the boks and you blaming stofile?do you people have brains?laws of the country do not allow it.saru claimed they didnt even know he was a zim

@Morena 11/12/2009 12:20:01 PM
How do you play 15 tests before the minister of sport realises Beast is not a SA citizen? The minister of sport was praising this guy for giving the B&I Lion's props a hard time!

BEYONCE 11/12/2009 12:22:01 PM
With this 'transformation' don't ever be suprised, when U led by a Zimbwabwean one day....just watch the space,Its so close !!! But now I wonder if we'll still blame it on Racism again ???

Point Blank@classof2006 11/12/2009 12:22:25 PM
I disagree, I think the beast is one of the best props in the world let alone the country, and no I am not a sharks fan. Did you see how the beast ripped apart the Lions front line, that was pure class man! A man of that talent should have been snapped up and welcomed into this country!

David 11/12/2009 12:26:30 PM
Its the South African team - not the All of Africa team. Its simple really - you must be South African to play. Whats the confusion?

Point Blank@Point Blank@debbie 11/12/2009 12:31:28 PM
Um, you never presented a case? How can you rest it on my comments?

Cynical 11/12/2009 12:34:05 PM
Ho hum....yawn.....zzzz...next (interesting) article please!

edwin 11/12/2009 12:38:18 PM
@LSA@morena11/12/2009 11:43:40 AM: Good point.
@kolobe: I cannot believe that saru did not know the BEAST was Zimbabwean. Do they ever watch a game on TV because nearly every time it is mentioned that he was born in Zimbabwe.

Pathetic 11/12/2009 12:38:29 PM
This is pathetic. Just sums up South African sport and politics. I'm so sick of this place!

Jo 11/12/2009 12:41:01 PM
Well,Debs my girl, you are a shining example of the low IQ found in sharks supporters..

@morena 11/12/2009 12:44:21 PM
morena is correct about the Beast being eligible to play for the Boks. Eles, do your research before you say "I like the beast but he should have applied for citizenship earlier". An application for citizenship takes years. Beast has permanent residence, which gives him the rights of a citizen and again, entitlement to play for the Boks. This was an issue when he first played without it, and SARU were fined by Home Affairs for it. Sounds to me like Mike and crew make decisions based on what they had for breakfast, not on any logical basis.

Lewis 11/12/2009 12:44:49 PM
Why Beast? I seem to remember him suffering badly against the Cheetahs front row a few games back. Hence, he wouldnt be my first choice, but then I'm not a Sharks supporter :)

Biza 11/12/2009 12:45:43 PM
Yet another letter based on speculation....bore.

morena 11/12/2009 12:50:42 PM
@GT ok that being said so you just put him in the team because the gov is taking way to long to process his application, how the hell did the selectors select knowingly that he is not a south african citizen and never ask if he is got citizenship

So we might as well take nigerians from hilbrow put them in the bafana bafana team and never check if the citizens or not becaue that not selectors's problem that the gov issues how stupid can one be

@ Joeman 11/12/2009 12:50:46 PM
Not quite correct. Tendai Mtawarira is a well educated, well spoken gentleman - he certainly doesn't fit the profile of an ANC supporter. Sorry for you.

Rodders 11/12/2009 12:51:03 PM
@ Classof2006: So who is better than the Beast then? please, the man is an incredible rugby player who not only fully deserves his place in the side, but is legally entitled to be there - see LSA's post above...

@Kolobe 11/12/2009 12:53:01 PM
Clearly YOU are a moron, do you know what qualifies a foreigner to play for an adopted country?

Luke 11/12/2009 12:59:00 PM
Beast is qualified to play for the Boks. Check the rules of the IRR. How many citizens of Pacific countries (Samoa, Tonga, et al) play for the All Blacks and Wallabies? This is a racist plot by Stofile to disrupt the Boks.

Jo 11/12/2009 1:01:17 PM
Wish Mike and his department would catch up with the rest of the country! Beast has met all the requirements & has all the necessary paperwork in place for citizenship. There is no way that any rugby watching person can claim to not know that he is Zimbabwean. For heavens sake, everytime he plays, the commentators remark on it and sometimes even go so far as to say which school he went to in Zim and with which other players currently plying their trade in SA. Get a lift those who claim not to have known - you're clearly not a real rugby fan!

BUSTA 11/12/2009 1:02:32 PM
@KOLOBE: Dude, everything you've said is complete rubbish. Everyone knows he's a Zimbo & he met the qualification criteria o play for SA. Now 'STUPIDPHILE' comes along with his garbage comments & people wonder why the ANC is so hated by people who actually posses common sense.

Russell 11/12/2009 1:03:43 PM
Pathetic attention seeking by the clueless boffoon stofile. Mujati and Beast have both toured previously with not a word said. Obviously stofile - the moronic amoeba he is - hasnt had any attention or new cars this week for so ably carrying on not doing his job ( unless it is, and im pretty sure its not, to have a quarterly tantrum and make some noise and some incredibly stupid nationally embarrassing statements to suit whatever immature petty agenda he has at the time - its "ministers" like him, manto, etc that make SA a global joke.)

Martin 11/12/2009 1:06:05 PM
To everybody. It seems that there is some confusion here.Saru acted lawfully as the IRB allows players to play if they reside for 3 years in a country even if they are not a citizen(ea Clyde Rathbone for the Wallabies)The Government and SARU must just agree on their own set of principles inside the IRB laws.So to Morena,SA Rugby is in no trouble at all!

ands@Joeman 11/12/2009 1:16:56 PM
Firstly Joeman how can you presume The Beast would vote ANC.....he been there done that and got the hell out of Zimbabwe....I think he has learnt a lesson. Back to the rugby and Mike stofile.....how does he only wake up know? Everyone knew the Beast is Zimbabwean , he never kept it a secret. So if SA Rugby is at fault in allowing him to play...why has the miniter only realised now after around 14 brilliantly played tests.

Kevin K 11/12/2009 1:20:54 PM
The government finally woke up after 15 tests and realised that Beast was a different shade of black! What next, is the government going to xenophobe him?

BRI@DEBBIE @POINT BLANK 11/12/2009 1:23:03 PM
I agree with Point Blank, article was good until you started your silly race remarks. Let me be the one to inform you that not everything is about black and white. This is between Zimbabweans and South Africans two different areas.

Koochie@Debbie 11/12/2009 1:25:16 PM
If you actually followed sports news all the time, you would see this has been an issue for a long while now, it has not only now been brought up. It also has nothing to do with race but of nationality, even though I personally disagree with this sentiment and would hate to see Beast go. So please stop making things black or white, get your facts straight before writing your articles which incite more racist comments!

@PointBlank 11/12/2009 1:32:44 PM
Ag shame Blankie, the truth hurts né?
U like your AA job huh??

sido 11/12/2009 1:37:53 PM
@kolobe - why attack the writer - rather just state your case iso being personal

Someguy 11/12/2009 1:37:57 PM
Debbie - understand your frustrations but two things on this:
One: This affects all sports not just rugby. What I don't understand is how a foreign player granted a work permit to play club/provincial sport then qualifies for citizenship? Is it length of stay in SA or proving he's the best for the job?? Very subjective.
Two: the selection (or non-selection) of foreign-based players is not a rule. PdV (and Jake before him) has previously stated that his policy is to pick local players first but he may look to those overseas if the need arrives. I think this is a good policy.

NorthernExposure 11/12/2009 1:41:54 PM
According to the rules of the International Rugby Board a player from another country can play for your country if that player has not represented his country at International level and has been playing for his addopted country in domestic competitions for more than 3 years. Beast qualifies on both counts.
Futhermore I do believe that he being in our National team is doing more for the transformation of rugby than any of the politicians. This seems to be an attemp by our sports ministry to shift the focus off the problems at ASA and onto rugby to garner support from the masses lost due to the ASA mess.

Kaballas 11/12/2009 1:44:03 PM
"I am more confused than a Cheetah supporter at a Currie Cup Final at Loftus" WTF???? What happened to the Sharks. Kak comment in view that the Cheetahs wond the CC 3 times in the last 5 years.....

Debbie and CJ is 1,000 times more South African then an inbred Zimbabwean will ever be....................

Actually The whole Sharks Frontrow should have been left at home....

NorthernExposure 11/12/2009 1:46:42 PM
Kolobe at the time Beast was first drafted into the Springbok squad there were numerous media articles about his eligibility to play for the team. The sports ministry could have picked up on this 2 years ago why only now?

@ Marcel 11/12/2009 1:47:18 PM
How's about you listen to the news more often???

Worshond 11/12/2009 1:47:28 PM
You go girl!

NorternExposure 11/12/2009 1:58:33 PM
Beasts inclusion in the Springbok team does more for transformation than any of our politicians. How many youngsters strive to be what he is today because of the way they see him play on TV? This is an attempt by our sports minister to draw attention away from the ASA mess!!!

scipio 11/12/2009 2:06:14 PM
Debbie, Truth be told ''If you can break one rule you should be allowed to break others''. Geez Girl, Something lacking in your education perhaps?

Point Blank@PointBlank 11/12/2009 2:08:36 PM
I'm white you idiot, hahaha!! Stupid idiot.

@@Marcel 11/12/2009 2:12:59 PM
I do and I know the full story, but in the article Debbie states she could not confirm or deny the story, I was merely suggesting perhaps we all do our research before we come to any conlusions. I use the term "we" often as I don't like to exclude myself from any wrongdoings, perhaps it can be misunderstood. The use of 3 question marks to emphasize your point??? (((Just checking to if it works...)))

Monkey 11/12/2009 2:44:34 PM
Maybe the author should compare apples with apples. The laws that govern which countries players are eligible to play for are set by the IRB, while the "law" about not picking players because they're playing in Europe is a guideline set down by the local administration.

If I lay down a house rule that says no drinking in my house, and then get drunk - does that allow me the right to drink and drive?

Maybe you should educate yourself on the difference between laws and policies, and local and international sports administration before whining.

DanieB 11/12/2009 2:56:05 PM
Why is it that we always dig up something before a Rugby test match to put unnecessary pressure on the players and management? Look like there are people who have nothing better to do than to stir. These stirrers should rather go and seek proper work. You are no good for the game or the country.

Dries 11/13/2009 5:25:06 AM
Debbie, saying the Beast had "reasonable success" is like calling Tiger Woods a keen golfer... He has destroyed almost every scrum he came up against and will no doubt become an even bigger legend than he already is. Our ministers are court jesters and fools pay them no mind, like kolobetjie they have none.

JONZO 11/13/2009 8:52:35 AM
Double standards, I say. Why does he need a visa, if half of South Afric'as population is here illegally and they all work. Home Affairs yesterday admitted that they do not know how many ALIENS there are in the country. It is only because it is rugby and a high profile person.

Debbie@class0f26 11/13/2009 10:27:21 AM
Funny enough I support the Bulls. But more importantly I support rugby. And you, my dear, are missing the point. I know he's not the best but I am just so tired of the contradictions. Mike Stofile is always harping about transformation yet he wants to kick out one of the best players of colour in his position? All this while there is no consistency for other rules. I'm complaining about that, not the fact that I think Beast is the best (which I don't).

Debbie@kolobe 11/13/2009 10:29:22 AM
I'm complaining about the fact that Stofile is vocal about Beast AND on the flipside he is always crying about transformation. Yet HE was the one who put through the bill stating that foreign nationals can't play until they have citizenship.

Debbie@Jo 11/13/2009 10:31:29 AM
And you my dear just proved once more how this country is still filled by people who assume rather than gather facts. First off I'm a staunch Blue Bull supporter. Second of all, the point I was trying to make is that Stofile passed the bill forbidding foreign nationals from playing AND he is also the one who rants on and on about transformation. As another reader said HOW LONG does it have to take him to realize that Beast has completed 15 matches. He chooses now to complain?

Debbie@BRI@DEBBIE @POINT BLANK 11/13/2009 10:34:50 AM
My race remarks? I am confused here. When I said 'Before the racist folks around here...' I was referring to those who would judge me as being a person of colour trying to stir the proverbial pot. Guess I'm not the one with the blindfold?

Debbie@Kaballas 11/13/2009 10:37:01 AM
Once again let me clear misconceptions created by people assuming things. I support the current Super 14 and Currie Cup champions. That sentence was an attempt at humour but that said I guess when you lose a final your sense of humour gets lost along with it.

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING 11/13/2009 4:15:20 PM
Rugby is a game. a lekker game at that. winning is good. But is it worth selling your soul to satan for a victory? Given all the furore I think it would be best and fair to use a South African who is a citizen and all that. Can someone tell me what was the 95'rwc final score and The final score when the Mighty British empire won the WC against ?

ZION@ALL 11/15/2009 10:49:20 AM
In retrospect does it matter if he played at all.
