'Dear Pessimists...'

by Mphatjie Monareng
2009-10-14 11:27

Dear Pessimists,

Sometimes I even wonder if, by entertaining your whims, I am not wasting my precious time because, much as you would like to believe, you are actually not so different from Julius Malema.

You see everything in black and white, and you see negativity everywhere. You often choose outrage over reason. You're in denial, and a few setbacks confirm your prejudices.

But, unlike Malema, you like to pretend that apartheid did not happen, and you want to deny its impact on our current socio-economic situation. You have a big problem: you suffer from historical amnesia.

You think we're going the way of Zimbabwe - and other failed African states - and we're not. Jacob Zuma is our fourth president since 1994, and Zimbabwe has had Robert Mugabe in power since 1980.

South Africa has a sophisticated economy, a strong and independent media, effective and fearless opposition parties, big business here is really big and politicians are not laws unto themselves.

You can choose to see only the negatives, such as crime, unemployment, poverty, corruption. But let me tell you: there is no place like South Africa.

You can pack up and emigrate if you want to, but chances are that you'll be back here some time in the near future. Many others have returned.

Some of us do not really understand why you are so preoccupied with Malema and what he says. When I am in a taxi and someone makes a remark about Malema, the reaction is usually common: "Malema? Wahahahaha!!"

You fear that one day the poor may invade farms. Are your for real? Invade farms? For what? Even in Zimbabwe the poor do not invade farms. Only politicians and their gangs do that.

People here have learned the art of forgiveness, and our history is now really just that, history - except for people like Eugene Terre'blanche, whom many of us see only as contemporary clowns, to be pitied, not taken seriously.

You can choose to get stuck in the past and hang on to old racial prejudices. You can choose to go against the flow of traffic, have your clock ticking backwards, but the rest of the country is moving forward.

I can't force you to love this country and be positive about the future, but it is for your benefit that you now start seeing the bigger picture - seeing that the positives actually outnumber the negatives.

The only reason this country isn't in the state of your average African country is because of Aparthied. If it wasn't for the infrastructure and development created in that time we would be like Congo/Ghana/Zimbabwe etc.

Please...why don't you and your ANC cronies leave. Go live in the Sahara or something

Liam 10/14/2009 11:37:20 AM
I like it !

JIMBO 10/14/2009 11:38:26 AM
HEY BRO , GET A LIFE , GET A BRAIN ...... You are so boring !!!!!!!!!!

D 10/14/2009 11:39:35 AM
Yes, There is a lot about this country I do like, but with people like malema, we will not get anywhere. You quoted "South Africa has a sophisticated economy, a strong and independent media, effective and fearless opposition parties, big business here is really big and politicians are not laws unto themselves". Who created this economy and so forth? We as people do not want to see it getting destroyed like the rest of Africa got destroyed. Whats so wrong about that?

Glock 22 10/14/2009 11:39:42 AM
Funny enough you cannot mention any of those positive things you brag with. Please enliten us ? If its going to well why is the whole country on strike and on fire ? You need to catch a wakeup pls

Piet Vdr Merwe 10/14/2009 11:39:57 AM
ek stem saam met jou...

Buckwheat 10/14/2009 11:40:35 AM
So then list all the positives, and all the negatives, and see what you come out with - because you have not done that here, and therefore your article makes no sense. Dont get me wrong, I love this country, and many of the people in it. I am not negative, I am realistic. But please, go ahead and list those items, and then ask people to add to the lists. i reckon cons will outweigh pros. Sorry.

craig 10/14/2009 11:40:51 AM
ooohhh i was enjoying your article til you mentioned apartheid! Dam man, can we please have JUST ONE discussion where that freaking word isnt mentioned?

Thats the chilles heal of this country, "we" are trying to forget, "you" are trying to remember!

Azonic 10/14/2009 11:42:12 AM
To all optimists, www.zasucks.com. Go and see what'd really going on in this circus of a country.

Oldie 10/14/2009 11:43:17 AM
I like to believe you very much, but the corruption in government and Eskom mismanagement puts a damper on it. But I like your positive attitude, and really hopes it is the way you put it

thibos 10/14/2009 11:43:37 AM
for your info i cant drive my toyota tazz at night, cause some stupid trigger happy idoit will mistaken me for a hijacker and he will shoot to kill. i cant enjoy the afternoon drive cause of this mayhem that is taking place. i say to the criminals increase your fire power and kill these bastards that killed my sister. you talk about positive outnumbering negative, you do not know what you are talking about. just make sense and shut up.

jd 10/14/2009 11:43:37 AM
thanks Mpatjie. If you didn't let me know of all this, i would probably have foolishly listened to blatant facts stating the contrary. you have opened my eyes and I'm reformed. Everythings great.

Jack 10/14/2009 11:44:11 AM
On the whole, a positive article.

And yes i am white, i have no amnesia related to the past, i do however have concerns about the hate speech coming from the likes of Malema and the lack of accountability in our current government.

I have no desire to leave SA, however we do have some serious issues e.g. violent crime and government accountability that we need to address for the sake of all south africans, without the likes of Malema playing the race card each time as that is becoming an all to common excuse.

Point Blank 10/14/2009 11:44:14 AM
Precisely Mphatjie, but it is entrenched into those minds since young, it is also enforced by the like-minded they choose to associate with. Both you and I cannot change that mindset, what we can only do is to live our lives they way we should and that is open, honest and colour blind. The more we refer to each other as black and white, two colours on opposite ends of the spectrum, we will always only ever see each other as total opposites. This over generalization must stop. When A black person does something wrong then suddenly ALL black people are useless, when SOME stupid farm boys make a racist video suddenly ALL whites are racist. It is time we tackle the individual and the issue and not the race, but I don't expect that to happen in our generation, I look to the younger generation and I see the changes already.

EngelsmanDBN 10/14/2009 11:45:00 AM
I agree with you 100%, great articale

the duke 10/14/2009 11:46:00 AM
@MM Critic: Aint that the goddamn truth!

Robert Ndungane 10/14/2009 11:46:14 AM
No, i disagree with you. Poor show.

max 10/14/2009 11:46:17 AM
MM Critic - Yes, and apartheid had its reasons. There was enough to be milked from the land and the cheap labour. An dthe only reason SA is still intact today and the economy growing, its because of democracy! So democracy is not so bad after. We had a rugby world cup, cricket and the soccer world cup is coming. Viva democracy!

@author 10/14/2009 11:50:34 AM
SILLY ARTICLE. so you're saying that our "big business" etc.. makes it worth while to stay? so the rapes, murders, theft is actually not that bad then?WRONG!!! and as for the farm invasions, of course it started happening already. i please invite ANYONE to try and take my farm. stupid article, load of rubbish

Willie Griesel 10/14/2009 11:51:14 AM
I suggest you lookup the meaning of the words Realistic and Negative huge difference

Edwin 10/14/2009 11:52:21 AM
This denial attitude are typical of those that does not want to admit the serious problems that exist in this country. You see, to admit them, would be to admit that the ANC has failed the country and it's people. So now they rather turn a blind eye and pretend as if things are not so bad. I also love this country and I am sorry for apartheid and I understand that the blacks have reason to hate us whites, but that does not give anybody the right to run this country into the ground.
So wake up and speak out against what is wrong, even if it is your own black brothers who are the cause. That's the only way you will still have a country that your children and mine can also love.

GT 10/14/2009 11:53:37 AM
There are positives yes, but it's also our democratic right to speak and to be heard. In countries where leaders are not held accountable, all hell breaks loose. We have to keep highlighting the problems and continue to complain. That way, we keep the focus on the real issues. I also love this country and want the criminals to be dealt with harshly, both inside and outside of government ...

@MM Critic 10/14/2009 11:54:32 AM
Wake Up and get a life....

Amanda @ Author 10/14/2009 11:54:34 AM
Two words for you. "Piss Off"

hahaha 10/14/2009 11:57:27 AM
its strange how you keep bringing up apartheid and Eugene Terre'blanche. yet you think Julius Malema is nothing like mister Eugene Terre'blanche. they are both the same. one white v black n the other black v white. (politicians are not laws unto themselves) really? is that a joke? do you have some rose tinted shades on or something?

wjs 10/14/2009 11:58:24 AM
Id prefer to live in a country where i can have children that wont be discriminated against in schools and sport and careers because they are white. You people will never leave apartheid alone and will use it as a weapon to oppress whites for as long as you can.

Amanda @ Author again 10/14/2009 11:59:56 AM
And I quote "and our history is now really just that, history - except for people like Eugene Terre'blanche" Are you for real???? You people cannot take ANY critism - the minute we state a FACT, you bring up the PAST. Oh please. Go away. You really make me sick.

geoff 10/14/2009 12:02:10 PM
There was a programme on SABC in the 90's called becketts trek. This guy visited Zimbabwe and berated white south africans for there pessimism about Zimbabwe. We all know what happened there. You sound just like Dennis beckett.I wish SABC could show that programme again so we can all have a good laugh.

Lucky Ralawe to Azonic 10/14/2009 12:03:11 PM
Sorry pal, got better things to do. Like ensure that the next government is anyone else but the current lot.

I am sure that gabbage was written by those 300 lunies who gathered around that has been called Eugene Terreblanche just a few weeks ago anyway.

Nick 10/14/2009 12:03:59 PM
Excellent article. You are so right, sometimes we get so stuck in the pessimism that we cant see whats good.

Shimane Mbuyisa 10/14/2009 12:05:07 PM
I agree with you. What I do no agree with is your suggestion that we stick our heads in the sand and pretend SA is a land of milk and honey. Otherwise we may just end up with Malema "wahahahahahaha!" as our president.

Aryan@Author 10/14/2009 12:05:33 PM
Ha-Ha. Thanks I needed a laugh for the day. Please go spew your communist propaganda somewhere else. What a funny article.Ha-Ha

Bobo 10/14/2009 12:07:17 PM
thanks Mphatjie, my point exactly all those who keep complaining about almost everything are so stupid, ignorant, racists idiot who don't deserve to be called south african. I just desagree with you on the Malema issue, he always tell the truth, you know how that hurts to some people, he should not be apologetic about it.

South African 10/14/2009 12:09:40 PM
Thank you, Mphatjie Monareng. We tend to get caught in petty debate and it does not help. Yes, we have the best infrastructure and private sector in Africa. We also have a superb land, and rich heritages. We have a great deal to be proud of and thankful for. I don't want to dwell on the negatives, but they come down to the issue of transformation. It seems back to front. Most of the talk (and maybe it is a media issue)is about transforming universities, and the judiciary, and the commanding heights of the economy (and place names). But it is very evident to all of us that the real need lies in decent habitat and education. When we get the local right (the municipalities, the towns, the places people live) then we'll be a truly good country. It's no good defending things when children learn in tents or badly maintained schools; when thousands upon thousands of people move into marginal shacklands in and around cities while fine rural land is deserted and rural areas left without development. We need a Marshal Plan, a practical non-ideological package to deliver to the people who make up the majority in this land. There's too much emphasis on bling, on status, on symbolic achievements. Too much demand for revenue for grand projects. Too much uncertainty over what becomes of this revenue. Let's be true to our vision, let's be real South Africans, and make a grand plan to get things sorted in the hospitals, in the schools, and in matters related to housing, sewerage, and the things that really matter.

Gareth 10/14/2009 12:12:30 PM
@ Auther.....What positive things about the country??

MM Critic 10/14/2009 12:13:36 PM
A democracy, you mean a ANCocracy. Just because two thirds of the country are below the IQ line and have no formal education and vote for a corrupt party doesn't make it a democracy.

"Keep them dumb and they will continue to vote for you"

A democracy where people are elected into power based on skin colour, a democracy where people are let into univarsity based on skin colour, a democracy where 14% of the population upholds the rest, a democracy where one lives in fear for your life, a democracy where all goverment institutions have failed...

That sir isn't a democracy, its anarchy...

GT @ Bobo 10/14/2009 12:14:03 PM
Listen bro, speaking the truth, with kindness and consideration is always acceptable, but his nastiness, and clear racism and arrogance, is hurtful to people and he is causing division in our nation. What kind of a leader is "too big" to say sorry??? Doesn't sound like much of a peoples leader if he cannot apologise. His arrogance and pride will be his downfall. History confirms this my friend ...

SimonP 10/14/2009 12:14:28 PM
@The Author. Stuck in the past? You blame apartheid for the mismanagement of the country so who is stuck in the past.

You seem hell bent on trying to persuade as many people as possible how wonderfully the ANC are doing, the only reason I can think of for this is that you know they are doing a lousy job.
I note the stock ANC answer for everything "if you dont like it leave".
Ive said it before, take of your rose tinted ANC biased glasses.

Hein 10/14/2009 12:15:40 PM
I was starting to think: This could be a great article. THEN I realized you are writing a US and THEM story. You talk about prejudices, yet, you yourself are the being prejudice by assuming that only a specific group (ie. whites) are negative. And then you go on by telling everyone WHY apartheid has to be brought up in every conversation. Get a life. I love my country - I don't need to defend my opinions against people like you when I sometimes fail to see the lighter side of pigheaded politicians.

Arch Nemesis 10/14/2009 12:15:46 PM
@author Hear hear!! At the whiner's if it's so bad...then just leave! I love Julius Malema, every morning he makes me laugh. If it wasn't for him this place would be so dull and all i would hear is the whining of a bunch of "victims" who hark back to a dark past. Get a grip you idiots. The world is not what it was 30 years ago and I agree 100% with the author you will leave for "greener" pastures only to come back as you realise that the country you have moved to is even more over-regulated and more corrupt than here. Cicero said the more the laws the more corrupt a state...if that is so then the first world is more corrupt than you all imagine!

cvz 10/14/2009 12:16:20 PM
Dude, the only people going against the traffic is the frikkin taxis, wake up you bloody ANC crony.

Andy 10/14/2009 12:18:07 PM
Mphatjie, as a "boerevrou" with an African Ubuntu heart and with no place to run to, thanks for the article, hopefully my son born 1994 will have a future without the BEE,the daily reminders of "apartheid", the senseless killings of innocent people and the immense amount of daily crime we are experiencing at the moment.

Ghwappie 10/14/2009 12:18:31 PM
A correction to your article: Eugene T and Julius M are two sides of the same coin, both of them "contemporary clowns, to be pitied, not taken seriously", although on opposite sieds of the political spectrum. Both of them living in the past as well. In Julius' case, so far in the past that he thinks he is still a "youth". Oh well, he never grew up, still shows signs of a pre-school toddler, like tantrums, unintelligible speech, underdeveloped cognitive functions and logic, etc etc etc.

Patriot 10/14/2009 12:20:25 PM
we dont want to forget history, YOU DO, you conviently forget, that We had the biggest part in the Struggle voting YES, you forget, that the Infrastructure was Handed to the ANC on a platter etc etc etc

CTheB 10/14/2009 12:23:14 PM
Uhhhh, our politicians are a law unto themselves.

Malema is taken seriously because it's obvious that he has a fair amount of political clout and speaks eloquently to mob mentality with his promotion of hate.

Forgiveness? One has to be blind to think that only the likes of ET have not learned to forgive.

@MM Critic 10/14/2009 12:23:22 PM
I'm probably more educated than you but I still vote the ANC, you need to undersatand democracy idiot, its about policies not skin colour, DA FF+ and the rest are so preoccupied protecting white minority interest, not interested in black people other than getting their votes and exploit them.

capricorn28 10/14/2009 12:23:32 PM

GT 10/14/2009 12:24:22 PM
I look forward to the day that ANC supporters can stop playing the insecure race card at every turn. I look forward to the day that all South Africans, including ANC supporters, can look at corruption and theft, and call it what it is...

Karen 10/14/2009 12:25:09 PM
Mphatjie, your attitude is good though you have your head in the clouds. No, we do not like to pretend apartheid never happened, it is the reason this country was as strong as it was, unfortunately reversing apartheid, does not have the same effect. The current government is still practicing apartheid they have just renamed it to AA/EE, which, by the way, was something invented by the dreaded western white countries to protect minorities, it does NOT work when it is in favour of the majority. You cripple your country by trying to apply this to the majority of a country. I know this makes no sense to all the benficiaries of the current apartheid, because you are still seeing the bogy man hiding uner your bed and think there is some global conspiracy to do the black man in. And by the way...we do not have our fourth ANC president, itis our third and the fourth term for the ANC government. So the name has changed but the party is the same, the agenda the same and the application of it the same - what is so different to Zim. We are not predicting doom and gloom for our own amusement, the white man is obviously more worldy wise and we have been part of the world for much longer than the black man, involved in globla politics and economies and corporates, much longer than theblack man and can therefore read the writing on the wall. Do we really have to sit and wait for all our predictions to materialise before you sit up and take note - by that time it will be too late to do anything about it. Dust the chips off your shoulders and heed the warning now, acknowledge the strength in others who have alot of experience to bring to the party, experience that can only be gained with time - there is no shortcut and stop thinking that people who do not have experience know best. As for people learning the art of forgiveness - HAHAHAHAHA. Show me somebody who has learnt this art truely and what it they have forgiven for and I'll show you the fairies that live at the bottom of my garden.

Anna 10/14/2009 12:25:13 PM

KOBUS 10/14/2009 12:44:24 PM
Good letter. There are a few problems I have with it, mainly its off-hand approach to the problem of crime and of politicians "not being a law unto themselves", but in the main it's a very good, very positive, true message.

Faithisfiction 10/14/2009 12:44:30 PM
I am going to print this and read it again during Malema's presidential inauguration.

Stan 10/14/2009 12:47:38 PM
Mphatjie Monareng, your article points to the potential of SA--- and thats why we are so pessimistic- we had(have) HUGE potential yet look at Standerton as an example of how its understood and used- with tyres and petrol. We (the pessimists) are gatvol of watching all the contries potential dissolve into a third world system.

Serendipity 10/14/2009 12:51:36 PM
Secondly I agree that there are people who are stuck in the past. They should wake up and smell the coffee. In order for things to work we all need to stand together, but honestly. There IS A DIFFERENCE between constructive critisism, whining and racism. We all need to read things through twice otherwise, i promise you there will be fights.

Point Blank@Thomas 10/14/2009 12:51:50 PM
Er no Thomas, you are an idiot.

Womble 10/14/2009 12:54:06 PM
Mphatjie - put some glasses on my dear you are so blind...oh then again in the dark you dont need vision - and thats where SA is heading Im afraid. Without the fundamentals of safety and security how can one not be pessimistic?

E 10/14/2009 12:59:40 PM
But farms are getting invaded - look at Natal Midlands ! And how about our crime and shoot to kill policy yet death penalty is unconstitutional! at least we would give people fair chance to stand trial , now every corrupt policeman is law to him self- shame on us and the government!
This is your country, your time, show the world what you can do - please....

Serendipity 10/14/2009 1:00:30 PM
Furthermore looking at those "excuses"like crime for example....Crime isnt an excuse. Its something thats destroying LIVES as for Education.....without it the Economy will fail and we will have illiterate people doing their jobs badly....Hospitals....Well do i need to continue. Mphatjie your attitude is on the right track, but your view isnt. We NEED to complain, adress and talk about these things. Brushing it aside and saying "Look at all the positives"will lead to chaos. Good there is progress.....now lets tackle the next problem before it gets out of hand

Juan 10/14/2009 1:01:01 PM
@Gareth: this country has a lot of positives, in fact the most positives of any country, hiv positives

Derick 10/14/2009 1:02:37 PM
It seems to me that there is a lot more shooting and striking going on in this country than in the Apartheid era. But that is what you get when you believe promises of politicians. Don't try and tell me that it is the sun and the beaches and mountains that are so beautiful. Give you one thing to think about - ESKOM. You next 3 increases is going to them. Enjoy SA - because you are going to work and not see any beaches or sea.

POST MY COMMENTS PLEASE 10/14/2009 1:03:31 PM

We are degenerating quicker than Zimbabwe and that is a fact!!!!!!

Ms Monareng,to be positive is to be healthy.BUT ! Farm invasions are happening in the Natal midlands;ANC attacks people who differ from them, like the shack dwellers of Kennedy Road,Gauteng MEC defrauding tax money meant for our people;business being compelled to dance to ANC threats, and more.I still have a job though, still alive, can still vote for the opposition;police did not shoot me yet.Yeah lots to be thankful for.

Keith 10/14/2009 1:04:10 PM
Good work Mphatjie. Reading these forums. it sometimes feels like this country only consists of extremists on the far left and right. It's good to read something coming from the middle. Onwards and upwards!

LM @ pessimists 10/14/2009 1:04:53 PM
Funny how your positive article calls for positivity and the pessimists still answer with negativity. (therefore confirming the content). I am very positive about South Africa irrespective of the problems. All countries have huge problems and one should keep perspective on the issues.

vovo 10/14/2009 1:05:11 PM
Extremism breeds extremism... Known trend throughout history. The AWB & Apartheid bred what is now the hatred Malema & he's mindless goons now talk about.. This is still just words but can be dangerous. Consider Malema a test of our society.. If he can get away with it then more will too.. & as a reaction you have more extremeism from those who feel oppressed by the Malema Gnome... The AWB Dinosaurs and fuelling a racial fire we all fought to put out. Pitiful bahaviour actually.. but possibly the only option

PessimistMaybe 10/14/2009 1:05:59 PM
Dear Mphatjie, I scanned through most comments and I wouldn't take most of it personally. If you read between the lines, most people are just frustrated and worried as you should be too. It could very well be that we are not going the Zim route as you suggest, however most people find it, inreadible that the current government do STUPID things like buy fancy cars, allow corruption, etc. etc. but take VERY LITTLE action in trying to stop these things. So the only way for these people including myself to act out and try and do something is by "attacking" people like you who voted vor the ANC and don't seem to see all their faults. You must agree that they do have lots of faults. But all you ANC voters seem to think that these problems will solve themselves as you have done your part in voting for the ANC. Why don't you help us in tackling the government in most of these cases? We want Government to be responsible for their actions(no corruption), we want affordable electricity where the CEO does not get a huge sallary if he did not do his JOB. And no, because Apartheid existed before, is no excuse for him not doing his job now. Do you understand? Yes, we do live in a wonderful country, but help us make it better, help us forget the past, and the current issues in Government etc. etc. As an after thought, if the DA were in power and the same was happening, we would have been complaining as much about them. Not just complaining about YOU guys complaining or it being Apartheid, or whatever. We would have given the DA all the stick they deserved, get it?

Interesting read. To complain is not neccesarily negative Mphatjie, "actually in fact" to complain would indicate that one cares! I guess all those people in Standerton are being negative then and suffering from historical amnesia.

S 10/14/2009 1:09:30 PM
Thanks Mphatjie, nice one. Funny how the commentators prove your points without seeing the irony in themselves.

vovo 10/14/2009 1:09:31 PM
By the way,Mphatjia, Good article, makes sense actually. For those commenting that have a one track mind, get your facts straight before posting... you dragging your own name through it.

To all those running away... the ones emmigrating, hope you enjoy yourselves.. you bunch of cowards, spineless motherless countryless sheep. I hate you more than the criminals themselves. You have no loyalty, no dignity no sense of unity. You were probably useless in your society in any event. Peasants.

I am a young 25 year old white male, so this apartheid thing to me, is something that some other people did at a different time. I am also positive about this country, we have allot of problems but i think we'll just wing it- hey where South Africans we can do anything! I'll stand by you any day brother and work to make this country great!

There is a point you draw the line. I am not going to work for your lazy @ss to have a child grant/free house/free electricity/free medical aid/free pension/free education. I am sick of people always wanting but not giving. Anyway you can't just leave, you need to mean something to the country you going to before they will accept you. Your are just scarred nobody will be left to look after you.

Do ANC supporters have a different dictionary to the rest of us. Evidently their dictionary list the definition of reality as negativity and racism as disagreeing with the ANC.

@vovo 10/14/2009 1:30:49 PM
Why are you calling people that left names, you don't want them here in anyway. And now for the surprise, it is not the peasants that is leaving, but the EDUCATED. Peasants is what you always will be

Well Said! Briliant article

Realist 10/14/2009 1:36:10 PM
The reality is that for us here on the ground level things will not get better unless you have the right skin color - we live in fear for our lives everyday. Racism in this country only seems to work one way, not sure who decided on that rule? Service delivery is down the drain, living costs just keep sky-rocketing and you can get murdered for your laptop & R15. Does this sound like fun or progress? Be honost lady, the people suffering for "apartheid" now had nothing to do with it back then. You have the right skin color, so when you ride in your taxi think how privileged you are to be the currently advanteged because we are the currently dis-advantaged - maybe we should start holding you accountable for the current racism.......

fisher 10/14/2009 1:36:11 PM
Should those people protesting in Standerton also stop "complaining"? What about all the other protests? They are all complaining against something ie poor service delivery, corruption, low wages.

Thomas@Point Blank 10/14/2009 1:37:02 PM

Brian 10/14/2009 1:37:17 PM
Couldn't agree more, people should stop complaining. South Africa is a paradise in my opinion. Being positive is a state of mind, it can be infectious.

Lydon 10/14/2009 1:39:13 PM
Most of these comments are so sad. These people are the reason for their own happiness. In the words of Lily Allen - do you really enjoy living a life that's so hateful?

What a bunch of Negative Nelly's.

Jack 10/14/2009 1:39:54 PM
"But, unlike Malema, you like to pretend that apartheid did not happen, and you want to deny its impact on our current socio-economic situation."

Catch a wake up Mphatjie!!!!!

You seem to have a problem with this history! Everything that goes wrong with your government is automatically blamed on apartheid. It ended 15 years ago. Live with it, and TRY and move forward!

Peter 10/14/2009 1:40:09 PM
Even been to Singapore? No crime, no fear.It is not about race or culture. It is about getting punished for crime. Tell me Monareng, why don't we have the death penalty? Almost everyone wants it back. Still nothing happens. Tell your lovely government to go to Singapore, look at their system, and stop living in your stupid dream world. IT IS NOT NORMAL IN SA!!!!

POST MY COMMENTS PLEASE@definition 10/14/2009 1:42:47 PM
LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@vovo and who might the peasants be, cause any person that has to emigrate to another country must be able to give and not receive...do you think u will make it abroad....be careful that the peasants might be all that is left in SA, cause the EDUCATED is being scooped up faster than u can blink

Bela 10/14/2009 1:46:28 PM
Eskom is a prime example as to how well the ANC have been able to DESTROY the STRONG South African economy left to them by the so called enemy. Apartheid was wrong and it never should have happened, and you know what the really interesting thing is... it did not only happen in South Africa. Every single person in government and senior positions in Govt. entities are there to HELP THEMSELVES, no one else. So while South Africa is my country, the ANC is NOT MY GOVERNMENT. Just think about how many RDP houses could have been built with the money the ministers have used to buy not one, but TWO private cars. How come you black racists (there are definitely more black racists in this country than there are white racists)can't realise this. When are you going to see that the whole reason EDUCATION in this country has been left to the dogs is because the more UNEDUCATED you remain the MORE BULLSHIT the ANC can get away with. WAKE UP! Our beautiful country is being destroyed by greedy imbeciles.

@Mphatjie 10/14/2009 1:47:23 PM
Uhm, ok lets look at the news recently. Standerton (ongoing), Eskom (ongoing), SABC (ongoing), SANDF strike, SAA bailouts, wastefull expenditure, NHI, possible tax increase, murder, rape, corruption, hi jackings, robberies, un employment, lack of service delivery, union strikes, and the list goes on and on.... Sorry that we all cant look at the world through the glasses you are wearing.....

Sonny@vovo 10/14/2009 1:49:23 PM
Read any advert in a middle east newspaper recruiting people. At the end of it they usually states "Preferably South African". You probably won't qualify because tthey are talking about people who are not shit scared of work.

Do a bit of research before you start making claims that we are not following the same pathes of the African countries that have perished. Most of those countries started perishing once they were unable to deliver the basic necessities like Water and Electricity. And if I look at SA what is happening here? Well looky looky we are having water and electricity problems!!

ElNicko 10/14/2009 2:01:50 PM
@Peter
A couple years back I worked in the States , in Florida to be exact , and I had the wonderful feeling of leaving my door open and unlocked at nite, not like here.
The reason why I came back to SA, I love it here !! but with the ever increasing crime rates and the like , its becoming near impossible to imagine this country in a better state.

@Vovo - you say how people emmigrating to other ,Safer countries are spineless ?
can I ask , Have YOU ever been Hijacked / Mugged ?

Im also wondering how many more riots like Standerton , will it take for the government to realise they HAVE NO CLUE on how run things !!!

Thomas 10/14/2009 2:02:36 PM
My the subject line for this article should have read: 'Dear Realists...', or maybe I think so because of "APARTHEID", I don't know???

Nordic 10/14/2009 2:03:32 PM
Mphatjie,
Just one thing: your point about South Africa not going the same way as Zim is based on a fallacy: the fact that Zuma is our fourth president. If you know anything about democracy, politics, or comparative study, you would have known that a country is only considered a proper democracy when POWER has been changed twice, without the country being burned down. Read carefully: Power is changed, not a baton is passed. South Africa can be regarded as a one party democracy, and I know this sounds like a paradox, but it is an actual term that is used, which doesn't make us much different from Zim. The fact that we have had four presidents from the same party doesn't constitute a democracy; it doesn't make us different from Zim. If our voters can be educated to not vote along tribal lines and actually for what is best for the country, and the ANC, in some or other way lose power, South Africa will be different from Zim, only in the event of a peaceful regime change, without looting, burning, intimidation, and all those other beautiful qualities that are usually associated with countries like Zimbabwe.

Leigh 10/14/2009 2:06:32 PM
I agree - get rid of pessimistic outlooks - else this country will not survive. BUT what irritates me is that you are clearly addressing white people with your comments on apartheid. There are as many pessimistic black people. I love this country and will never leave. It will take EVERYONE to make it work...

Kerry Horrocks 10/14/2009 2:10:19 PM
Im not too certain on the opinions expressed in this article, but I do believe we have a great country. I wouldn't leave for the world. For positive news and feedback on life in South African go to www.phuthu.co.za. Great site if you are positive about our country's outcome!

Mmmmmm ... lightweight, emotional, and very little substance. Good enough for a grade 9 essay, not worthy of publication.
And sadly the "downtrodden" do not realise that they have only swapped oppressors - not garnered freedom.

Les 10/14/2009 2:15:05 PM
Thanks for this article. Too often we forget all that this country has going for it... and that is plenty!

Of course we cannot forget the unacceptable crime levels and I hope that this issue is given priority in the years ahead. BUT....

I am a proud (white if it matters) South African, loving life in my country, creating work and oppurtunities and living life to the full. I have my faith, my family, my culture, my country and my people (diverse as we are) - I LOVE SA!!!

To those who have left, good for you. Please now leave us and our forums alone. I hope you find happiness wherever you have run off to.

Have a look at www.sagoodnews.co.za for some of the good stuff that is happening in SA....

Dear author. To whom is this letter/article of yours addressed?? Please take your eye caps off. Have you been hijacked, kidnapped or raped lately? Was your child kidnapped and slaughtered for muhty? The crime unfortunately makes it difficult for some people in SA to see that there is more positives than negatives. And that is their right to feel that way. So please go on with your airy-fairy life and let people have their oppinions. You probably we'rent very happy during apartheid, and that was your right. By the way, you must be really happy with the fact that 3 years from now you'll be paying 3 x more for electricity than now. Or do you have an illegal tap-in as well....

SA is a paradise...... a fool's paradise.

I'm 51. We left 2 years ago after giving the current lot of political 'leaders' ample time to 'fix' SA. That's what they promised and that's what leaders do, right?

Well, it took my wife and son all of 10 minutes to acclimatize….and we’ve never looked back. We live in a first world environment and can travel where we like with more ‘real’ rights here than we had back in SA. The difference is that in SA one lives in hope of a better future, here we have the future NOW! And it’s beautiful.

mabile 10/14/2009 2:39:51 PM
tell you what Peter, why dont you ship off to Singapore if its so grand. go on then get packing and live us to our crime infested south africa. hit the road Jack and dont you come back, that goes for all of u who think Mzansi sucks.

Johan 10/14/2009 2:43:35 PM
There is, humanly speaking, no basis for hope for a better future at this stage. We have politicians who have NO capacity at all to make SA a better land (for all). There is among the leaders and managers of this country NO sense of accountability. If the Police Minister blows a quarter of a million on himself, he just says, Sorry, I never kwew it was going to cost so much - and then no-one says a word after that. More and more the rich must pay - for the poor, they say, but how much of our hard-earned money actually goes to the poor? How much goes to the gravy train? Why must we pay for the poor man's medical aid and pension if we are already paying TAX + VAT + RATES AND TAXES + our own security + our own private sschools etc (eveything we as tax payers should get back but we don't)?? Everything is DETERIORATING. I believe the current bunch of leaders will never be able to rectify the situation our country finds itself in. In the mean time our children are growing up, needing education. And why should THEY want to stay in a banana republic? So one day we will be here and our children will be gone. I am rather leaving myself.

Andy 10/14/2009 2:50:49 PM
Wow... what a great article! and i'm an expat!

D 10/14/2009 2:52:08 PM
I agree with Mphantje, our country has lots and lots of positives ... but at this stage the size of the few negatives overshadow all the positives.
I am sick and tired of the racist card begin flung around ... THOSE DAYS ARE OVER! In fact apartheid has switch ... it's the white people that are drawing the shortest straw!
People like Selebi, Malema and even Maroga from Eskom - I get so angry that I want to throw something!
STOP THROWING THE RACE CARD AROUND - THOSE DAYS ARE SOOOOOOO OVER! GET A LIFE!

south africans are such a hatefull people....

scrubz 10/14/2009 2:57:37 PM
peter:countries that employ the death penalty, hav a hard time proving it made a significant impact to their crime rate, than before it was introduced.even in the states, which is one of the reasons(albeit there are more)that pro-deathsentence groups (which have significant resources, financially and in the senate seats) hav a hard time enforcing it in states where it is not practised.ppl actually read the literature and realise it doesnt do much except kill innocent ppl.

@vovo 10/14/2009 2:57:58 PM
Our closest friends are emigrating to New Zealand early next year. About three months ago their 20 year old daughter, a university student, was hijacked and brutally raped by three men. She escaped death by driving her car into a wall, but the perpetrators have not been caught. The family are so traumatised that they cannot live here any longer.

Are you capable of understanding that, you sick, twisted individual?

Sambok 10/14/2009 3:08:06 PM
@Everyone saying we should all help to make SA a safer place:
No problem. Let's all get together tonight with whatever weapon you can lay your hands on and patrol our streets. We then donner anyone who looks suspicious until crime is eradicated. Problem solved. We'll show vovo just how "spineless" we are.

SimonP 10/14/2009 3:10:09 PM
One track minds?? Look at the authors postings, all the same singing the praises of The ANC and inventing "facts" to back up the letters. The ANC sheep on here dont havde a one track mind they have NO mind of their own whatsoever.

TC 10/14/2009 3:11:02 PM
On my way to work I was listening to the 5:00 A.M. news. Despite the twisting and falsifying the truth it sounded very grim. I then came to the realisation that this country is TOO FAR GONE to have much hope for it's future. Does anybody really believe that this country can be fixed? Honestly?

are u for real? 10/14/2009 3:12:11 PM
@author - i've noticed that all your articles are biased and that you lack an overall perception of what really goes on in this country. you should stop writing columns, unless the sole reason your articles are published is to create debate and get more comments! your views express a hidden subtle element of racism. any fool can pick that up.

@vovo 10/14/2009 3:13:17 PM

(Good article tho)

@Karen 10/14/2009 4:29:58 PM
Why are you still here then?

Mary 10/14/2009 4:31:36 PM
I am a white South African currently living in Zimbabwe. I have read most of the comments to Mphatjie's letter and I must say I am rather horrified! So much hate. Freedom of speech is one thing yes, but to get so personal about the writer is not neccessary. I am under no illusions about SA' problems. My whole family is there and I keep well informed daily about all the news. Stop comparing yourselves to Zim. For a start I can assure you that farm invasions aside, the relationship here between different races is a milliion times better than south of the limpopo. Something I wish for my beloved SA...

BT 10/14/2009 5:10:07 PM
@Proud Ghanaian. You have you head in cuckoo land my friend. Ghana may be "recovering" at the moment, but lets face facts. Upon Independence in 1960/2, Ghana's economy was 125% the size of South Korea. It is now roughly 25% the size of South Korea. If you call that progression, then you are just like the rest of Africa. Accepting of mediocrity! I have lived in Ghana, and I can tell you, it is still a mess.

MarcP 10/14/2009 5:14:56 PM
It is time for us to move forward. Forget about the Malema's and Terre Blanches of South Africa. Most people are not like either of them. I just hope that neither gathers enough support to have any real power.

The members of the government need to be held accountable for their actions and more importantly for their inaction. It seems to have become the norm that governmental officials are rewarded for their incompetence. I hope that this changes before it is too late.

@samsam 10/14/2009 5:21:07 PM
I pity your ignorance. You call what you've had since 1994 leadership!

What has YOUR leadership achieved! What have they built!

NOTHING.

yebococo 10/14/2009 5:37:19 PM
I am sorry. What is doing Mr. Zuma and his new team by April 2009 until October 2009? They bought luxury cars! Just that, no new tenders, no new jobs, no new planning, they spend R42 in news cars, are you optimist? Good luck!

Al 10/14/2009 5:46:02 PM
Mphatjie, you are spot on! There's just too much negativity, an insurmountable and completed childish obsession with race and FEAR & cultural ignorance written all over the News24 comment pages. Thanks for message - this was well received!

Just me 10/14/2009 5:47:15 PM
@samsam, does stupidity come naturally to you?

Mr T 10/14/2009 6:28:18 PM
To author: Dude!! What you smoking??? this country is on a downward spiral..and very quickly!! By being aware of this doesn’t make you negative..it makes you realistic. SA will require food aid and loans from the IMF within 10 years!! But then, it's nobody's fault...it's just Africa!

Mugen31 10/14/2009 6:57:19 PM
I would just like to point out one very crucial fact you forgot to mention (even though you probably would not admit it): in part this country has not become like Zimbabwe because of us (and you know by what "us" I mean). Also Mugabe chose not to involve white people in his dictatorship of Zimbabwe. That is why Zim is were it is today.

simon 10/14/2009 7:15:37 PM
If this article was supposed to make me feel positive, it has failed miserably. It is trash talk, plain and simple and will appeal to the masses, but not anybody that can read a newspaper and think.

Frank II 10/14/2009 7:45:18 PM
Whatever we have today may not exist tomorrow. Go and read the history books for yourself on what happened to post-colonial Africa.Talks of revolution and killing white settlers does not encourage foreign investment and a falling literacy rate does not predict a bright future either. For sure - someone who was previously disadvantaged can only see the positives but those of us who were advantaged - we notice the decline in health-care and education - just to name two issues.Surely we have reason to be concerned because our children will suffer in future too.So yes, there are many positives which we appreciate and are glad about but don't ignore the warning signs. Don't ignore COSATU / SACP's call for Socialism or ANC cadres behaving as if the Constitution does not exist. We see how minority rights are being trampled upon and we will not keep quiet.

@ Mphatjie Monareng 10/14/2009 7:54:34 PM
Usually Mphatjie Monareng make some good sense but I am not sure about this one. Being deaf, without permanent employment for 14 + years despite above average working performance at previous and many temporally employees, I am usually a very positive guy that try my best to help as many people as possible. From JUST today's headlines Mphatjie, think about the following. With only 14% to 20% of taxpayers that support the rest of the 80%, HOW long do you think it will last if that money are wasted by the Government and all semi-government institutions and the gap between giving and getting citizens even increased on daily base with more grants instead of jobs or education and more and more babies and immigrants? In a developed country 70% - 80% of people pay tax to support the other 20 - 30% so how much longer before the ratio is 10% taxpayers versus 90% receivers and everything collapses? I Don't care a DAMN if the Government is black, pink or IVP as long as they do things that actually make sense such as stop waste money, stop the stream of immigrants and look at their OWN people first, stop PAYING people to breed like rabbits as a way to earn grant money by limit the grant to 1 or 2 children. I, like most likely MOST educated people, don't complaint against the ANC (or blacks) per se, but against their many senseless acts that actually works against South Africa and their OWN poor people in the long run. WHY? South Africa is a great place with a lot of potential so I repeat the question, WHY are the positive being converted into something negative by the current Government? (With regards to ET and Malema, don't forget that ET have not even 1% of the white's support, but how much support have Malema so I don't worry about either ET or Malema, but about the huge SUPPORT for Malema clearly indicates how far left a lot of our people are.)

good luck to you and all your mates. been out of S.A. for many many years and i can see the downhill spiral every time i go back to visit my family. i only hope that things change for the better and that after the SWC that the economy picks up and that my sons that are almost finished with MEDICAL SCHOOL ( one is doing a MED DOC degree and the other is doing a DENTIST degree ) that they can leave there as soon as they can.

Guess what, there are other countries in the world where they have rugby, braais and great weather, and it is well governed. Granted, these first world countries are heavily regulated, but it actually ensures corrupt officials are forced to resign, people adhere to traffic rules and speed limits, if they catch you drink driving you can lose your licence. Keep on dreaming of your better future, this pessimistic peasant has it already. Hope you wake up before the dream turns to a nightmare. And stuff those who are so fast to criticise people leaving, some of us chose to leave early, but others went through hell and were on the edge - they could not stay and keep functioning.

NorMel 10/15/2009 3:11:52 AM
@ vovo - Please answer me this ONE question... Many black people are so determined to have the whites leave SA, and then you get foolish comments from people like you that say the whites are "cowards" for leaving. So PLEASE answer this... WHAT is it exactly you want from us? Do you want us to leave or to stay???? I implore you to answer!!!!

AJ @ Mphatjie 10/15/2009 6:28:21 AM
The positives do NOT outweigh the negatives (unless you have very LOW standards).

paul 10/15/2009 7:32:42 AM
Dear Head-in-the-Ground,
I wish upon you some Totsi to take a chunk of "reality" from your backside. Nay I pray for it, you who need a dose of reality most!

Cliff Bradley 10/15/2009 7:33:15 AM
You Dont Have To Love Your Government To Love Your Country, I Can Hate The ANC And Still Be A Good South African

Pete 10/15/2009 7:41:44 AM
If only there were some truth about the positives outweighing the negatives, but the reality is that for most South Africans (politicians and criminals excluded) their quality of life continues to be eroded as SA accelerates down the slippery slope trying to support an ever-increasing population living in poverty by milking the honest taxpayers. Just face it, all the numbers are stacked against a rosy future for SA.The truth is that the demands of supporting the burgeoning population living in poverty will outweigh any economic prosperity.

cj 10/15/2009 7:46:55 AM
We are not a true democracy, the ANC know they are in government for a very long time as most of their voters will vote for them regardless of their policies. If they feared losing the election they would do a better job of governing and there would be less corruptuon.
I love this country, do not want to leave but I have to be realistic and if my family are in danger or I am struggling financially I will have to rethink.
I have made a list of pro's and con's unfortunately far more cons

I Laugh. I seriously laugh out loud when i read stuff like : "This country will be nowhere if the apatheid government hadn't built the businesses and infrastructure". And when someone says " I want to move to a country where my kids are not oppresed in sport and career coz they are white!". Take a second and hear yourself actually mouthing those sentences. I think you don't get it. South Africa and ALL independent African countries will NEVER, let me repeat NEVER be under white rule again. So its either you seriously whine along, or move. Coz let me repeat again- NEVER see another apatheid of white ruled government again! Democracy will alwyas rule! Gosh, another laugh is coming when I hear the AWB say 'reclaim our rightful land'...didn't your ancestors come off some ship??

jenny @ brian 10/15/2009 8:18:44 AM
you obviously don't mind using the subsidised university system to educate your gifted children - your fees don't cover all the costs you know! i think it's a tad hypocritical to be happy to take when it's convenient, but then run away when there's no more to take!

Patrick Mkhwanazi @Karen "common nonsense" 10/15/2009 8:20:24 AM
I assume the "we" you refer to is a collection of the 300 or so dynasours who screamed racial obscenities, cursed, and reminisced on the vierkleur around that ghost called ET about three weeks ago as someone earlier said :-)

Calm down. You really sound like you are pre-menstrual. Surely you should be used to your hormones by now :-)

Wow, I can't believe how naive the writer is...

CH 10/15/2009 9:10:14 AM
I understand the crux of your letter. I agree that one should always look for the silver lining, so "high five". But please, don't ignore the obvious....

How does it feel to be a hypocrite?! Speaking ill of white people is racist TOO! And how can a person "move on" if they pretend that what is really happening is all a "lie"?!

I say rather... accept that there is crime, corruption, poverty, unemployment and FARM INVASIONS. Be aware of it. But then at the same time be aware of our culture, opportunities, growth, acceptance, versatility and compassion.

Stay focused, stay motivated and climb out of the box... South Africa will do the rest.

Why do the young people with no wisdom in this day and age like this writer always shout their mouths off as if they have something worth hearing? save us from fools and those who would destroy us all in their own personal agonising learning curves.

Barry 10/15/2009 9:20:35 AM
On the whole I agree with you Mhatjie. ET & JM are of the same "KIND" and unfortunatley they do have the ability to rally the extremists to support them in their hate speach. But it's up to the rest of us South Africans of all races who are in the majority to strive to make this country a better place to live in.

Tony 10/15/2009 9:21:59 AM
I trust you all read this mornings News24 headline....criminals stopping hearses with bodies being taken for burial and demanding ransom!! 26 year old intern shot dead in yet another hijacking. Your pathetic excuse for a government cannot even protect it's people. Get real and see the facts. The criminals are running your country!!Sure there won't be a white government again but then there won't be a decent infrastructure again either....look at Standerton. That is just the start!!

@ KAY laugh all you like but the truth is this country wouldn't be where it was without the white man. Also the laugh is on you because most of us don't give a continental which colour rules but just appoint credible people who know what they are doing not incompetent morons raping the coffers and doing nothing! Let me spell it out for you two things are outdated here: the race card it is tired and old so put it away because the world doesn't care and 2) the myth that white people want majority rule again - we handed this country over in a vote for a true democracy to begin - what a farse this has all been!

I visit this site constantly and would really like to know who else explores/browses this site. the backgrounds of people really do play an enormous role in their percepceptions and mindsets hence leads to thoughts and comments. clear proof is in all 'opinionated' articles and comments. so could a News24 editor or someone please be so kind to help. maybe think of using the Voting Booth....how many blacks? How many whites? how many indians? etc or say corporate people or other. thanks

Kaltie 10/15/2009 10:02:59 AM
I am not going to read this article, the heading is enough. Ja you pessimists, just in today's news, a 26 year old girl was murdered in cold blood, a police officer was killed in cold blood, three armed robbers robbed and shot a family in their home, rioters are burning down the town of Standerton, another minister bought a R 1.2m BMW, 80% of the other crime has not been reported. Zuma is still to have his day in court, Shaik is still free and did not die. So yes, you go and tell the mourning families and friends, of the 3000 whites that were murdered, that they are over reacting. You tell the people who starve, they are over reacting. You tell the people who are unemployed, unclothed and homeless they are over reacting, R 45m BMW's eases their plight. Go on stupid, tell them.

madlamini 10/15/2009 10:05:32 AM
MMcritic you sure come across as being stupid to say the least, according to you democracy is legitimate only if it goes according to you and your likes, the current government was voted in by the people not necessarily your people.

That is democracy fool.

SA hospitals in crisis
2009-05-24 12:14

South Africa's state hospitals are in crisis, and will be at risk of collapse if hundreds of unpaid and demoralised doctors flee their shocking working conditions and pay, the Sunday Times reported.

While doctors and health experts blame the shambles on health mismanagement, health minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi said, "I would not use the word crisis, I would say very serious challenges."

brian@jenny. my ex wife wanted to take my 2 sons back to S.A. i had no choice in the matter because of the LAW SYSTEM there. i can tell you the fees are astronomical and my DENTIST studing son was one of the top 5 students in the country a few years ago and he could not get a bursary because he was white. also they did not get first choice to get into the medical school because they were white. firstly they had to do a different degree to get to were they are now. they have spent so many years at UNI they it must be the only place in the world where you have to do this. i can also tell you that it's their choice to leave there. i am not sorry that i made my choice. my ex wife is sorry now that she didn't stay with me in the country where i now reside. she has been robbed so many times that it's actually silly to put it herebecause nothing will stop it. as i said have fun there and enjoy your choice of life that you want. people leave because they want to and it's their choice to leave. one thing i must say is that S.A. did give me a good upbringing and also a very good education. i worked hard to get to where i am today and i am grateful for being able to do it. and don't worry i am not an afrikaner.

"You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom.

What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is about the end of any nation.
You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it."

Five stars, Mphatjie. I hate the way that some of my fellow South Africans embarrass me with their thoughtless and bigoted rants on this forum. FACT: Apartheid happened and we are all still paying for it. FACT: Crime is a problem. FACT: Poverty is an even bigger problem. But optimism is patriotism and I love this place and its people. There is a huge difference between acknowledging problems and simply complaining about them. I'm not sure what these pessimists are trying to achieve. The worst are the one's who have left and then troll these forums with their bile. Pathetic.

Johan 10/15/2009 11:04:03 AM
South Africa has only one asset - white people. South Africa has only one problem - the rest. After all Mphatjie is living proof that not all blacks are illiterate. Stupid yes, uninformed yes, utterly devoid of the ability to argue a point yes, but not illiterate. Praise the ANC.

jean 10/15/2009 11:05:36 AM
Fabulous article - thank you! The only problem is the race card is brought out to try and explain away so much by ineffective government lackies. For every Malema (mini Mugabe) there is a Terre Blanche. Thankfully the majority of us are somewhere in the middle.

So move with the times, you are no longer having your cake like you had under apartheid. This is nothing compared to how we felt under apartheid.Enjoy the taste, then we shall gather around and vote for the DA so that the minority racists can have their cake back.

save your precious time by not regurgitating the same old same old. Rather identify real tangible issues and post appropriate responses. Issues such as why the judiciary and the legislature are becoming too closely aligned, the manipulation of voting boundaries and so forth. Those are the issues that matter! The regular Joe has to be united in defying those actions and the rest will come into place.

Sinudeity @Louis 10/15/2009 11:28:49 AM
The people in Standedton would disagree with your 'pale people' comment. Are you saying, that the government stealing billions, is merely payback for apartheid? Ah well, perhaps we should let the ANC continue, looting and pillaging. I mean, the worse they do, the better for the opposition parties, ne?

FJ 10/15/2009 11:56:07 AM
I agree that we should be positive but I just want to mention a few things. I have seven friends that have emigrated to Australia. None of them are coming back, believe me. South Africa is not THAT great! We should stop thinking that the world sees us as the "rainbow nation" and as a "miracle". They don't care about SA!!! Although we have had four presidents since 1994, we have had only one governing party. That's even more dangerous. The ANC and government institutions are inextricably linked. State departments are not independent enough for me to feel safer. I think the problem is that there is no precedent of a truly great and successful African country. Africa still has to prove that it can produce successful governments.

Small Town Boy 10/15/2009 11:56:22 AM
LOL ... no farm invasions and no white genocide, no murders, no robberies, law abiding politicians and I dont have a bullet hole from an AK 47 in me. You a funny man.

Thanks for making my day, Mphatjie. I am with you on everything you said. We are so fortunate to live in a country as gorgeous as ours, with the exceptional infrastructure work that is being done and with the incredible human capital we have. The people leaving our varsities are educated and have begun to see the world in their own light, and that means seeing South Africa for the enormous potential it has. Of course, you will still get the people who make life very difficult for themselves by clinging to past values, but I say let them do so while we enjoy life here. It's a harsh thing to say but the reality is that everybody who is still hung up about the past need to pass so that the next generation, who want to make this country as good as it can be, can do the work that is needed to make this a peaceful, fantastic country. Mphatjie, don't let the comments here het you down.

MM Critic @ madlamini 10/15/2009 12:11:56 PM
You just don't get it do you. Just because people are conned into voting a party doesn't make it a good democracy. The ANC are master manipulators of the poor and they proved it time and time again. The ANC is the most rasicist in the country, just take a look at its membership statistics (mostly if not all african). So much for the rainbow nation.

The ANCocracy in which we live in a joke, the rich africans only vote for them so they can keep their jobs and line their pockets. The poor vote for them because the are promised heaven and earth and told that all other parties are rascist!

Open up your minds and try break through your cultural hinderances to see the real picture. Try evolve just a little...

Postive thinking is important, but it must not be confused with stupidity. Post Colonial countries took an average of 30 years to crumble. South Africa still has 15 years to go, and we are well on our way. Do some research beyond the media, and realise the cancer cannot be cured.

SA is like a giant casino, where you gamble your life away with criminals 7 days a week 365 days a year. This casino is never closed and the money you put in goes to criminals, politicians BMW's and the politicians pockets, SARS is just the slot machine. When are we going to stop gambling our lives and money and put this CASINO out of business? I ask you WHEN?

SIGH 10/15/2009 3:53:52 PM
AAAAArrrrrrggggghhhhhh Firstly whats wrong with the bush? I don't understand how there are all these people who want to claim their birth right as South Africans but have this arrogance and superiority complexes with regard to Africa. I am so over the great explorer, conquerer of the wild natives, who came to ignorant shores bringing civilisation and God. If you think you're better then maybe you don't belong, whether you were born here or not.

Mjita 10/15/2009 3:55:45 PM
Why would people prefer to forget. This mean that they are trying to mess up their minds. Africans in South Africa are in a difficult process of forgiving the those who persecuted them in the past. To force them to forget will be taking it too far. It seems that some people have a twisted version of the past hence these days you will not find a single one of them who supported apartheid

Dan 10/15/2009 3:55:49 PM
Wise words. Certainly a voice of reason amidst some chaotic times. We need to hear some more positivity.

Brouhaha 10/15/2009 4:03:28 PM

Apart...eee 10/15/2009 4:11:42 PM
Apartheid happened alright, but then we got over it and moved on...Four ANC presidents and a Malema later and I think you should add to your list of negatives thanks to our beloved ANC and Bee and what what.
PS why is Aids so high in South Africa compared to anywhere else? is it cultural is it educational? when will we learn? its embarrasing...

EXPLAIN 2 ME 10/15/2009 4:18:04 PM
I think you misunderstand alot of whites, deep down inside we can handle the AA/BEE but we have a major issue with murder, rape, hijacking, corruption etc. All we want is a safe place rather than the current government letting the criminals run the country. Really crime is so out of hand and government is jippo'ing the figures for sure. Cmon ANC supporters why isnt your government protecting the people of SA. Thats our big gripe, AA/BEE is nothing as we know we still all have the real jobs.

TOM 10/15/2009 5:40:27 PM

THe biggest losers in this country are those people who can't think outside the box!; who could have forgiven as magnanimously as Black people did in this country? We know...let them go!

kosie 10/16/2009 1:50:11 PM
the anc was/is a liberation party. they were the ones that promised liberation and achieved it after long hard years. i just hope they dont take the same amount of time to start governing...

I think he is thinking like a typical previously disadvantaged S.African- Wake up - Government change has been around since 1994- look around at your goverment officials and the money that they steal and yet they ignore their own poor? Is that all Apartheids fault-Its time your people took responsiblity for their own currupt actions -If Apartheid was so wrong why have the new government taken on the bad ways of the past- its an embrassment to say that as S. Africans we are a proud nation- Wake up and look around -Was the rest of Africa also under the Apartheid Regime?!! Take your blinkers off and admit how slack your Government is- they can't take control of their own people -eg taxis rule, their people litter and burn stuff and pee anywhere- Why do countries like Sigapore etc work- because they have structure and discipline and clever peolple running the lace and they take NO NONSENSE from Criminals -In this place Criminals Rule because it has become a money making racket - Wake up!!!!!!!!

lesley 10/16/2009 3:51:19 PM
Ann hit the nail on the head when she asked if the whole of africa was under apartheid...!!! someone else is always to blame..thank God for colonialism or africans would still be eating one another!!! So give credit where it is due, if we must take the heat for apartheid then at least give us the credit for bringing africa put of the dark ages

hoodoo 10/16/2009 4:07:46 PM
we can make a difference together. :-)

Geejay 10/16/2009 5:09:06 PM
Great article and the comments? Well they're mostly just from a privledged minority who hang onto some identification that no one wants anyway. Yes the article should be debated but from a perspective that we all love this country, not one comparing a rock spider nazi regime to our present day challenges.

meerkat 10/16/2009 6:39:36 PM
i left south africa a year ago, heartbreaking but the sun shines brightly this side, the kids are safe, best thing i ever did.

Boerseun 10/17/2009 6:58:15 AM
I love South Africa, the soil, the mountains etc..but I hate what the ANC and those voting for them are doing to this paradise and it's people, made by God.

JLR 10/17/2009 7:14:25 AM
Listen to this clown! "I can't force you to love this country..." We love this country more than you do idiot. Another thing, you talk about racial prejiduce, but then the article is full of 'you' and 'us', people reading this aren't stupid my friend, they know you mean black and white. Don't you even dare talk about farm invasion, wait untill four of your loved ones are tortured, raped and killed on their farm for a dvd player and a TV, then you come and tell me if farm invasion is happening or not.
Your article has no merrit, because anyone who thinks that a person who tells white people that they are only usefull and only have to stay in SA untill the black people have learned their skills (Malema) isn't a threat has something other than knowledge onthe brain...

Mpho 10/17/2009 8:35:38 AM
Mphatjie...I grew up in a White family. There are VERY good White people... I know where you are coming from but I can hear a bit of the "R" word in your article... Give White people the credit they deserve...

emma 10/17/2009 9:57:30 AM
One less pessimist in the country LOL there are thousands and they are POSITIVES, that's why they left! All skilled people, people who were teachers and doctors and engineers, but the majority does still not grasp this concept. POSITIVES who will not stop until all their family has joined them and YOU, You know who you are is left to rot in hell. Seeing as 12 municipalities are already dumping their waste in the rivers and you cant afford power, look forward to suffering more than in the apartheid era. Why are you protesting about service delivery?

letstasti 10/17/2009 11:04:34 AM
When we ignore or commit lies or fraud like using medical aid card for our friends, relatives, girlfriends,or boyfriends then we contributing to the decay in our
culture.

Shawn 10/17/2009 11:36:45 AM
Still so many devisions, reading all this. One thing is forsure, and that is that to many people still carry the past around with them. others are to convinced that something is owing to them, others again feel that they do owe. I feel that as long as we are not united, we will never succeed.

Big Mouth 10/17/2009 5:30:58 PM
Hi - but are you not being pessimistic about the pessimists ?

Phillip Smith 10/17/2009 8:34:28 PM
Mphatje, for an article from a so called optimist to all the pessimists out there it would have been believable if you had stayed optimistic throughout. One of the biggest problems facing modern day South Africa is a lack of vision by all. Once we can establish a common South African vision the racial divides will fade away. The common vision that I speak about is tied up in the FREEDOM CHARTER. Corruption is wrong no matter who commits it. It should not be more justified when commited by a certain faction or less justified when commited by another. The same goes for any form of crime or hate speech. I am saddened by the deteriorating racial harmony that was our pride in the 90's. I am an optimist and work in Saudi Arabia away from my family to give fellow South Africans an extra employment opportunity. My fellow South African's working in Yanbu reflect all population groups and we braai and socialise without the hang-ups of our compatriats back home. We work and live in harmony with all nationalities from all parts of the globe without any friction and are liked and respected by the local populace as well as expats from other countries. I say change what you can change and forget about the things you have no influence to change. bigotry has no place in any society as it destroys and does not build. Keep the 10 commandments and South Africa can still be the torch of hope in what is conceived by most as the dark continent.

AlmostExpat 10/17/2009 9:55:49 PM

@Azonic - If you're forming your opinions based on what the retards at www.zasucks.com are saying, you must be unbelievably stupid.

Lucky 10/18/2009 5:46:01 AM
I always remember my late brother saying that he will be the last to leave SA, he will be the one to switch the lights off - after reading this article I realise that my brother must have been correct, he left SA 4 years ago - tragically passed away 2 years ago and I think he did switch the lights off in SA when he left. God bless you all

sailorboy 10/18/2009 3:03:52 PM
R570K on the police ministers Durban stay. ha ha, where you ANC supporters today. eat cake fools. comedy SA. burn baby burn. yup, i am bitter, what you gonna do about it, the country is yours, and your beloved ANC will rape you alive and then rape you when you dead, your children will live like flies and you can continue to vote ANC, it just gives me more stuff to laugh at. SA burning, ha ha.

NorMel @ vovo 10/18/2009 3:32:56 PM
vovo I'm still awaiting your response - Please answer me this ONE question... Many black people are so determined to have the whites leave SA, and then you get foolish comments from people like you that say the whites are "cowards" for leaving. So PLEASE answer this... WHAT is it exactly you want from us? Do you want us to leave or to stay???? I implore you to answer!!!!

Expat 10/19/2009 4:58:24 AM
Ahh, what a dumb article. I have lived out of South Africa now for over 8 years. I have now lived in two different continents and two different hemispheres (other then South Africa) and you know what makes me never want to go back to South Africa (and dread just visiting family there) is the fact I can walk around the streets here in Sydney, or in Perth, or in central London, Brixton London without any fear of my life been taken. Sure there are risks everywhere and crime exists everywhere (including violent crime) however the odds of it happening to you in South Africa are much greater. South Africa when I left is still the same violent country, a country which the government has made no inroads in actually targeting. They would prefer to have parties with lobster and champagne. Sad sad but true.

Would I ever return? Yeah sure, if they sorted out the crime but I dont ever see that happening. Crime pays very well especially if the crims dont have any fear of punishment.

gino 10/19/2009 7:17:06 AM
so much generalising, anger and hatred..tsk tsk. That is the sad part. C'mon people change your attitudes. Yes, all in not perfect here but anger and hatred just fuels the fire. Ubuntu please, more unbuntu.

Gigi 10/19/2009 10:04:25 AM
Never mind all that is said and done, I for one have decided to only talk positive about South Africa and the future. I will pray daily for Jacob Zuma and Malema because according to 1 Tim 2: 1-2 one should pray for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. As for all the negative comments that will come out of this, I will pray for them as well. Let's stop talking negative, why is it that all people love is negative talk. Have you any idea what all this negativity does in the heavens, you are giving power with you words.

Serendipity 10/19/2009 12:15:51 PM
@Mpho: High Five!

J* 10/19/2009 1:06:22 PM
Regarding the eskom fiasco….

Instead of whinging and moaning as per usual let us all DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! The government has to realize that they have been put there to take care of our nation first and foremost!

It’s such a South African disease to just groan and moan and not actually step up to the plate and fight back! Government doesn’t want to subsidize the maintenance – well then, now it has the public in the streets to contend with!

REVOLUTION TIME IS HERE BABY!!! OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!!!!

KHUMZA 10/19/2009 2:53:19 PM
This is probably the only country where people (especially white people) will see the grass greener on the other side but would not be willing to leave. Pls people if you so dissatisfied with my beautiful motherland you are all welcomed to go back to wherever you came from.

Jeremy 10/19/2009 6:04:32 PM
Nee ou boet. Its you who are in denial. You are denying that there is a not-so-hidden agenda to socialise/communise this country, that Malema just last week let the cat out of the bag that the ANC WILL nationalise the mines and thereby accellerate the economic suicde of this country (and they will not stop there); that all the examples of socialist economic failure that we are all free to abserve in some of our closest neighbours and all of eastern Europe mean nothing to these air heads; that the meaning of transformation in ANC circles is really lowering standards to the lowest common denominator, and taking away wealth from those who have worked hard and rewarding those who have no clue what the word even means, and can make no connection between the words hard work and wealth; that the ANC have failed miserably to instill the right values in the youth.

Baboon 10/19/2009 8:05:30 PM
Khumza - actually the only people who can claim SA is a motherland are Khoi-San. The rest of us came from elsewhere. That's not a bad thing as migration sorts sheep from the goats. Have you tried leaving? The requirements are very high. So many of the people who are unhappy cannot leave, and came from here (they have as much right to the country as you do, if not more). I am leaving - I'm sad to do so, but I am not prepared to be a second class citizen living in perpetual fear. It's an expensive, heartbreaking difficult process. And no, Zozo, most migrants don't come back. Just the failures.

Kaltie 10/19/2009 8:09:58 PM
Give me any international (not africa) passport, and I am gone like a scone. Thank you.

AlmostExpat@J* 10/19/2009 8:29:26 PM
Yeah, yeah, you and the rest of the ignorant ostriches like you, keep rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. For all the good THAT will do you!

NamRon 10/19/2009 9:08:35 PM
@ Author - A lot of what you say is true, but you are also contradicting yourself. At one point you say that Malema talks about apartheid and doesn't pretend that it never happened (by the way that he keeps bringing up the past - and you seem to praise him for that). Then you say that we should not be living in the past and that we need to forgive and move forward with the country.

My answer to that is, most of us ARE trying to move forward, yet you get the Malema's in the country that are increasingly belittling everyone that has a different viewpoint to them, thus making it hard to be "optimistic". I am one that loves SA and I support it fully and I try to be optimistic, but when Malema talks he makes my blood boil, because all he is doing is using propaganda to spread racial hatred and racial polarization. Many might say that they like Malema, and that is fine (freedom of choice), but he is a very bad poison to this country and the sooner people wake up to that fact the better (black AND white).

SA is the best country and I do not want to leave, but the negativity that Malema is spreading is not healthy. So you can call people “pessimistic” if you like, but it ALL stems from the same places – lack of competence in the country and Malema’s negativity and bigotry. A person can only stay optimistic for so long when someone is bashing them over the head with shovel full of negativity, hatred and uneducated speeches (and Malema is the one holding that shovel).

Ant 10/20/2009 12:18:22 AM
Consider a few of Einsteins quotes. "Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius -- and a lot of courage -- to move in the opposite direction."
"Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character."
"I never think of the future. It comes soon enough."
"Common sense is the collection of prejudices acquired by age eighteen."
"Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe."
“ Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding."
And most importantly: "We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them."

Koos vd Merwe 10/20/2009 7:26:41 AM
Can Zuma create a position Minister Without Portfolio and give it to Eugene it works wonders look at Jay Naidoo

pierre 10/20/2009 9:36:50 AM
Zim, Mozambique, etc also had a booming economy untill the "white" backbone was destroyed by Africans migrating from the North claiming it is theirs. S.A is no exception!

ElNicko 10/20/2009 9:40:05 AM
@ the Author and all you optimists out there.

I have to ask this question , how THE HELL can you lot be so positive, with all the senseless murders going on day to day ?>?
Senseless killings are a norm in the country. and Honestly im waiting for the government to do something (section 49 isn't going to help.
So instead of fixing it , they will just change it- for worse.

The SCUM that killed the Intern in Alex, claimed it was a Mistake , but it still doesnt make it any more right. they say they will get around 25 years for the murder , which as we all know wont happen. if lucky , they will maybe spend 10-15 years in jail, and get out on "good behaviour" to which they will go and murder another innocent.

SW 10/20/2009 12:01:49 PM
Very provocative article - but biased. South Africa is not going the way of Zimbabwe JUST because we already have our 'fourth' (actually third) president as opposed to having one mad dictator? I would say the ANC government as a whole is ONE big mad dictator!

Scarlet 10/20/2009 2:35:55 PM
Some headlines : Teen dies tragically in ambush; Newborn baby abandoned in mall; Girl gets R1 after rape; Robbery at Pretoria mall... And those are just some of the headlines for today... Seriously?

Nigel Bragge 10/23/2009 8:11:03 PM
I suppose it all depends on the colour of you skin.
Is the system working for you or not?
I suppose if I was black I would also have a positive outlook. The problem with trying to move forward in this country is that we are constantly reminded of all the wrongs of the past which justify the discrimination that one has to live with today.
Anf by the way if one believes that SA is not on the same path as Zimbabwe, I suggest Mphatjie wake up and smell the coffee.

MAdchief 10/26/2009 1:52:42 PM
I always like the 'voters must be taught not to vote along the tribal lines...' and it is quoted by people who have forever voted for the same party! hahaha. you gotta love this country, I wouldn't trade it for anything else, not even the US!!!

johan 10/26/2009 6:14:39 PM
We have an incredible opportunity to make it 2010 happen. Do your part by choosing faith over fear, tolerance over discrimination, love over hate.

david fitzhugh 11/24/2009 3:17:19 PM
Hey South Africans.... love your country! You live in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Every country has its issues but you have overcome some that most of the world thought was not possible in an incredibly short time. The future is bright and the possibilities endless. I think so much of your country that I have bought a retirement home there and plan to spend as much time as possible with you. I am an American and see a brighter future for you than for my own country, which I also love dearly. I know quite a few of you that have moved to the U.S. and even those that found business success, for the most part, would like to return to S.A. if they could. Be proud of who you are and cherish what you have and work together to make it even better.
