A Canuck Kaapie

by Adam Currie
2009-09-10 10:07

I sent my original letter you a few months ago as a beaming with pride South African, voicing my democratic rights in Trafalgar Square. What a day: boerie, ballots and acronyms galore.

My, how things have changed. For one I fell for a fine Canadian lass - lets call her "Canuck" for this exercise - that was willing to look past the mounting flaws of this author. One soggy Friday I logged off the PC on mud island and asked myself: "What the hell am I doing here? Surely there are adventures to be had."

I racked my brain and the inner uber-testosterone driven 1980s South African male roared within. I had a vision - me, a plaid shirt, a beard and a mountain. Where could such manliness be unleashed upon the world? Where could a beast that would give Bakkies the shivers be allowed to mix with the common decent folk of society? One word. "Canada".

So off I went, a 26-year-old South African gent with good intent, packed to the rim including jocks and socks, and mom's "Good Luck We Will Miss You" card. I boarded the big bird in the sky for a land of beaver (animals people, get your head out of the gutter), maple syrup and those mountie looking fellows. You know the ones - like in Due South on SABC3.

I landed in Vancouver to a pearler of day and basked in its wake. Mountains in the distance, sun on my back and a sea breeze tickling the nostrils - a fine distraction from the arm pits I had since been savouring daily on London's "innovative underground". What a place; a place to start fresh and bring adventures anew.

Treacherous tales

Surely I would be a treat to the locals. "Wow, South Africa? Really?" They would shout. "Yes, the land of Madiba, fine wines and sandy beaches", I would reply.

Aaahhh this was it. I was about to become a "fresh off the boat" blank slate in a land where democracy ruled, and a son of the revolution of our fine nation would be embraced.

And then it hit - no sooner had I sat down and begun to plan my lumberjack beard, and logged online to find myself a shiny new axe, when the Canuck leans over and says to me some white Saffa has been granted refugee status.

I felt a strain in my moose hunting shoulder as I leaned over to savour this glorious, but surely satirical tale. And so I read of the treacherous tales of this poor "Huntley" (feel free to replace "H" with any letter of your choice) chap, and his treacherous life back in deep dark Africa.

I read about how he, a white chap, would stick out like a sore thumb in this colony they call "The Cape", and at how he had been called names like "settler" and "white dog". How cruel society can be, I thought. Thank God he has got himself out of this treacherous place and its savage ways. And then the lumberjack inside bolted and sanity came slowly strolling in. Wait a second. I am white. I am from Cape Town. Ok fine I am not an unemployed irrigation salesman but, thank goodness, the similarities had to end somewhere.

I have read in disbelief at how this absolute chop - come on, that was the perfect word to use  admit it - has tarnished the reputation of a great nation. I perused how he had been robbed seven times and never reported it because "he did not trust the police".

What an absolute joke. This chump - who is a carnival worker this side by the way - has managed to somehow slip into Canada a few years ago, work illegally, and then still managed to convince the authorities that he is in fact the sole South African left on the planet, is being hunted down by JZ and his cronies, and that if he is to step foot on the beloved soil down South that the world will cease to spin, the sun will not rise and that Julius Malema will finally become mayor of Oranje.

A fantastic place

The Canuck, who recently enjoyed a trip back home to the fairest Cape with me in March, looked on in confusion as I pointed to the Cheshire cat grin of Huntley, and declared him the last surviving white South African. This guy MUST be kept in a test tube for the world to admire - a true tool in every sense of the word. Since this cowboy went global I have had people in bars offer to buy me a beer for all of the hardships I must have endured as a "white African", and had employers eyeball me thinking that they surely cannot hire another oke who is a "refugee".

However, all is not chaos. This place is fantastic and if they are willing to let Huntley stay here forever with such claims, they certainly do have a sense of humour. I just feel bad that a legitimate refugee spot has been yanked from some individual sitting in a cold dark bullet-ridden corner somewhere, actually fearing for his/her life.

He did however make me beam with pride; beam in knowing that once this visa is up that I am indeed headed home. I am one of the "lucky generation", a guy that will in a few months time sit with my black and white brethren down south, Black Label in hand where we can reminisce about how the last white irrigation salesman left for the carnival abroad, and that no matter what tough times are to come that another country is having to deal with this absolute clown.

I, for one, cannot wait to be the only returning white chap in South Africa. See you soon.

Nice. However, as distasetful as Mr. Huntley is, his refugee status has struck a chord in South Africa. Say for example he was a white farmer - would his allegations still be treated with such ridicule? I think not.

I disagree although I would say that Huntley exaggerated he didn't lie - ask any South African if they would feel safe lying in bed with their doors unlocked and therein lies your answer. Sad as it is and a fuss has been kicked up only due to government embarassment and I say to government if you don't want criticism do your job properly and you won't receive any.

This article is melodramatic. *Yawn*

Spiderman 9/10/2009 10:45:42 AM
Good luck with your reception back at the airport!

I am sure that Poliodonkey, ENrust, moerena, Julius and Winnie will be there to welcome you back and give a speech to the world how the whitey returned. Now racism is something from the past!

Rock on Dude.

Luke 9/10/2009 10:45:59 AM
So Huntley is a failed irrigation salesman ... I wonder what else he failed at. I wonder what he does at the Canadian carnival?
@Sarah. If the distasteful Huntley really was a white farmer he may actually have been attacked.

Topdog 9/10/2009 10:49:39 AM
You may perceive the story as funny, but I can tell you that if this works I will be on that plane with my family laughing all the way. I will also have no guard in front of my mouth about exactly what rubbish is going on in this country.

Maybe he truly had bad luck in RSA and you are a "lucky" one that have not experienced the trauma of cruelty of crime in RSA. Fact: Developed society in general is not accustomed to, and resorting to the cruelty in this country. The frequency and severety of crime committed (way past demographics) and that is hidden and played down by our hippocratic ANC rulers, would have the whole Canada at the shrink! Makes you wonder about the value of life. Based on the cruelty and the ease at which a life is taken (even ignoring politics - think Xeno, taxi, strikes, etc) life is valued less by certain cultures. Dare I then say that a "developed" life is worth more that life in cultures where it is obviously valued less by the culture itself? Go search for internet articles/pictures on (not only) farm attacks that the government prevents the media to show, and get your head out of the sand. Sorry, have to go answer the 2 way radio of our neighbourhood watch. Wonder who was raped now again?

Classic. Well written. Funny!

Brian 9/10/2009 11:04:54 AM
As a white South African man I am dumfounded. I am often and regularly accused (justifiably)of benefittng from the past and so enjoy a more resourceful South Africa to my fellow former disadvantaged countrymen. Everytime I drive the N2 I am reminded no matter how bad things get for me, they will remain alot worse for many millions for many decades to come. It is a reality I refuse to run from. A few sacrifices is my price to pay for a better SA, their price is much higher. I can afford to drive and avoid deadly taxis, put in security at home and seek a job from my home computer. I have tied to my fate to be a part of this countrys solution, hopefully not contributing to its demise.

Erix 9/10/2009 11:24:48 AM
Such a funny topic, lets all laugh at the 20 000 plus South Africans (of all hues) who are murdered each and every year while the rulers of the Murder Capitol of the World complain about their reputation. Anyone who does not think that the violent crime levels in South Africa are not a completely shameful National tragedy must have their heads firmly buried in the sand. This story just serves to highlight the fact that SA is a dangerous crime ridden place with a Government who worries more about luxury cars and reputation than for service delivery and the lives of their citizens.

It is shameful and the Government and their lack of competence is a National Embarrassment.

Andrew 9/10/2009 11:33:11 AM
What Huntley has said about being unsafe etc in this country if you are white or appear to be so is true. This applies not only to physical danger which is rife, almost the worst in the world, but to every other sphere. Try to apply for a job if you are a white male. Try to apply for a job in the banks etc if you are a white male or a white female. You won't get it. One can go on and on and on. Look up on the web sites on Internet re violence on whites in this country. So stop bullshitting and face the facts.

24Inch @ Andrew 9/10/2009 12:02:55 PM
The fact of the matter is that violence & crime is out of hand in this country. The government is up in arms because a white oak (or is it a coloured oak, very confusing) used it as a reason to be granted refugee status. As always the government is deflecting the attention away from the real issue – we are at the mercy of criminals. Why (rhetorical question, ‘cause one will never get an answer) don’t the government actually do something about crime? Now this one chomp brags about the response time of 20 minutes when one calls 10111. What a joke! It should be less than 2 minutes if the minister of safety and security was doing his job, and not shopping for a new R1mil car!

marc 9/10/2009 12:03:28 PM
I can't comment on what type of character huntley is, since I do not know him. However, he has done this country a massive favour, merely because he put the plight of the people (yes, plight), into the limelight of the international community. even if its only for a day, it doesn't matter, because we need this attention. Not that it will help us, because nobody really cares, but at least they will know. I think half the world has the attitude that the whites had it coming.

A challenge 9/10/2009 12:15:16 PM
Here is a challenge. When you come back, move into a house without 20mm burglar bars, no security gates, no alarm, no electric fencing, no armed response, no Rottweillers. Let us know.

The merits (and considerable demerits) of Mr Huntley aside, there are real people "sitting in a cold dark bullet-ridden corner somewhere, actually fearing for his/her life." I was one of these people, when I bought a house next to a Zimbabwean gang of drug dealers and thieves who were "renting". The police did nothing to protect me, other than to inform my "neighbour" that I was the one who had the audacity to complain about their terrorist acts. It is easy and safe to sit in Vancouver. Enjoy it.

Mark 9/10/2009 12:47:07 PM
Makes me think back a few years when a white Badplaas plot owner and his wife were murdered in front of their two daughters. The girls were tied up and after seeing their parents murdered the thugs took to slicing their faces saying to them that they should take back the message that all the land in the area belonged to the blacks and would be taken away. Sad thing about that it didn't even warrant an article in the Gauteng newspapers etc. Makes one wonder.

Stan 9/10/2009 12:47:13 PM
for someone who hasnt lived in this "beautiful" nation for some time, you really do love it. instead of going to canada for an adventure come back and settle down for life and see how quickly you get a job and how long it takes before you come accross a white person who has been directly affected by a serious crime. I say thank you canada see you shortly

Geoff 9/10/2009 12:53:08 PM
Adam Sir, i salute you. this was one beautiful pice of writing. It makes me feel a sense of pride again. It restores my belief in my fellow man, black or white. We are a great nation. We have so much potential. Yes we have aproblem with crime, but we have more going for us than not. I think there are thousands of others abroad that wish to come home again. Mate i'll be at the airport to welcome you with a Black Label in hand.

I am sure Huntley would gladly come back to this warm and beautiful country if Mr. Zuma would lend him half his body guards so as to ensure the safety of his family.

JD 9/10/2009 1:00:58 PM
What a chop you are, Huntley is within his rights, at least he is safe cant say the same for the rest of us that is still stuck here. I see there is some comments on the blogs on Ottowa Sun, maybe more people should share their stories with the canadian press. The truth shall set us free Hopefully before we are murdered.

Brian 9/10/2009 1:09:52 PM
Ever heard the saying "you get what you deserve?" What have you done lately to make all your gripes resolved? I am a 40 year old WHITE man who got job in tourism, which by the way is lily white!! And before you ask what I do - I am part of neighbourhood watch. So I have a right to participate in this debate cos I am doing something. Besides bitching on this forum what are you doing to make it better? Or wait who will you blame now for your pathetic inaction. Supporters of Huntley and he himself do not deserve what this country offers, and please just leave. The IQ in both SA and Canada rose when he left and will escalate when u go!!

Ja right - big joke!! I like to see hiw fuunny you find it when you do get back and find just how hatred is thrown your way because of your colour. Will you laugh so hard when you try apply for a job and get told you are the wrong colour. White people are called all sorts of slanderous, derogatory and unsulting names, but if we dare say "kaffir" - oh sin of sins. Hope you jusdt feel it was bad luck when people break into your house, rape your girlfriend and call her a white whore and then the police will say it wasn't a crime since the victim was white and we must all understtand the poor black persons trauma of having had his parents live through apartheid. Why was it so understandable when black people sought refugee status from the apartheid goverment and yet when a white person seeks refugee status from an ANC version of apartheid and revenge for the NP apartheid, its considered a joke!? Oh yes!! Very funny - you have a sick sense of humour. Every white man, woman and child in SA is walking around with a target on his back, some are just too stupid to realise it.

GBES 9/10/2009 1:21:48 PM
Right on brother.Welcome back soon.Surely one must be the dumbest person to believe all black people are evil, murderous gangsters.Huntley will "standout" as a total incompetent in intelligent company.I like white people, because at least they complain.Black people seem to have this capacity to endure a lot of b&*lsh#t from politicians and still vote for them again and again. However lovies, this is your and my country, and I detest exiles who rubbishes us.Crime is a problem, yes, but where people are, there you will find crime.Maybe some countries have better police than us,but what the heck,in the USA we have our own guns to shoot the f*uk&#s the police cannot catch.Better policing = safer neighbourhoods.

Upper Langa 9/10/2009 1:25:06 PM
I wish I could get out of this coutry. Just at my house alone. Attempted burgalaries 36 times, robbed of everything 4 times, (once during the night while sleeping) and held up at gunpoint once and this just in the last 4 years. AND I must still be optimistic. Hell no, if you can get out, do so.

David 9/10/2009 1:26:44 PM
So Mr Adam Curry know it all why are you not in South Africa?

Bonny 9/10/2009 1:27:04 PM
A very funny letter but a bit misguided. We do have a crime problem in this country. Every country has crime for sure, no-one disputes that, but the VIOLENT element in this country is cause for grave (literally) concern. I applaud Huntley for upping the blood pressure of our useless government members. The way that they have been scrambling around to cover their asses has been pure comedy.

Baps Bapela 9/10/2009 1:27:50 PM
I wanted to read your letter up to the infinity although crime is a serious factor
riping us apart as nation. It is imperative to know that lashing out each other on racial line
exacerbates hatred rather than pulling us together. Please write again Adam

@Brian ... You echo my sentiments exactly! That is exactly how I feel about my previously advantaged position, and I am always looking for ways to contribute to this country, knowing that I've had it easier than most, even if my parents were just average, hard-working middle-class people.

Young Settler 9/10/2009 1:57:40 PM

Young Settler 9/10/2009 1:58:02 PM
NICE!!!! Finally a example of one of the new generation young white people of south africa that dont give a CRAP on what the colour of a persons skin is or bother on complaining about everything that is wrong with or country. We just try to do something about it and not just sit and moan and *yawn* try and show how disgusted we are with this country by making useless comments on a forum instead of taking action and showing that white, black coloured, indian, asian and 0.02% khoisan can live together and make thigs work instead of being mellodramatic and runing away!!! Big up for writing a letter that actually makes sense to a young up and coming "white dawg"!! Well put bro!!

Hopeful! 9/10/2009 2:01:55 PM
Great read Adam. Even though I disagree with the tactics Huntley has adopted, he has been able to cast a spotlight on the very serious crime issue in SA. Hopefully the international embarrassment of this debacle, will finally get the Govt to seriously address crime as it actually doesn't have racial boundaries and affects each and every citizen. PS: Looking forward to having you back...

fern 9/10/2009 2:04:21 PM
don't worry adam. you're not the only white chap returning. most soon realise how crap it is on the other side and many are returning in droves.

Eugene 9/10/2009 2:20:37 PM
Well it’s simple really..!!! Get the stats out for the past 5-10 years to see of what colour the Attackers/Robbers/Rapist/Killers are that were reported or caught and of what colour the victims were...!
I think we all know the answer to that!!

Adam C 9/10/2009 2:26:31 PM
My how I do enjoy sparking a debate. I certinaly am under no impressions that crime is not an issue back home- obviously it is...my ramble was at what an idiot Huntley is as an individual with regards to 'being a white guy that would stick out like a sore thumb', not the moans and groans on the issue of crime. @Brian- will be back one day, for now using my visa rights to the max @ Brian...keep your moaning to a minimum deadbeat- I will get back, give me time...am gonna live the holiday for as long as I can! and @ Es K Z- SPICY!

We have been living in our new country for two years now and love it, we live in Perth Australia, with our doors unlocked at night, as we peacefully sleep safely and soundly. This place to us is like a paradise we never knew, clean streets, safe roads, safe public transport, beautiful beaches.... the list can go on and on, we miss our friends and family, but mate, there are "no worries". My cousins fiancee got murdered on their plot just outside Port Elizabeth in April this year, they stabbed her seven times, she had pushed the security panic button, they stole nothing, but went on to murder an old couple on their farm. I couldn't live with the crime anymore and I know of thousands who feel the same, and not just whites. I have heard that Perth has a South African population of over 300 000, makes you think doesn't it....

Xolani 9/10/2009 5:02:59 PM
Great article ! (loved every line) ....

Dinuzulu@Andrew 9/10/2009 5:11:48 PM
Dude, getting a job is a challenge for everyone, regardless of colour. Some people can market themselves better and/or happen to have the skills that a particular company would be looking for at a given time. As a black female Engineer it took me 6 months to get a job. You go to interview after interview until you get that job where your skills and experience match their requirements. I know many many black people who have had similar experiences. Who/what should they blame then?

I think it's unfortunate that some white people are still trapped in the past. Jobs were reserved for them in the past and some are failing to make the necessary adjustment, mentally and otherwise, to cope in a transformed SA. Before it was a given that once a white person qualify they WILL get a job without much competition. In some cases most even got jobs without any qualification; their skin entitled them to jobs.

Remember now, you are no longer competing with whites only, but with the rest of the 80% of the population. Get over your silly excuses and do whatever it takes to market yourself. There are many many white people who are doing very well for themselves because they have made that important attitude adjustment; a prerequisite for identifying opportunities. As a matter of fact, unemployment amongst whites is very low compared to blacks.

Stop lying to yourself and crying like a baby; and get on with life. We are all in the same boat. No one gets given things on a platter. You will be surprised how many black qualified and skilled people are unemployed. Should they also blame AA?

Very amusing read... but I think you failed to realise a very important fact

"individual sitting in a cold dark bullet-ridden corner somewhere, actually fearing for his/her life"

That sounds like an awful lot of South Africans to me. Perhaps you have just proven the point that you, as a chop (?) couldn't get?

Jay Johnson 9/11/2009 1:01:12 AM
Bullet-riddled corner ? Ever been to Hillbrow in Johannesburg ? Huntley is a survivor. He did not feel safe in South Africa and took whatever steps necessary to ensure his survival. He deserves credit for that.

South Africa is a very exciting country to live in. In a typical city suburb you can often hear gun shots at night. Mr. Huntley will no longer have the pleasure of hearing that sound. With all the power failures it's very exciting to just turn on a light, because you will never know for how long it will stay on. In Canada Huntley will easily find work. How boring ! In South Africa, he needs to beg, borrow, steal, bribe and b*llshit hit way into a job. He will no longer have that great experience. Other exciting things about SA he will never experience again are is highly enjoyable public transport system (aka minibus taxis), he will never have to hear another word about AA, EE, BEE and he will never again listen to the wise words of Julius Malema.

Another great activity he will sorely miss is installing heavy security fencing, electrified fencing, burglar proofing, security gates and the like. When his girlfriend goes out at night he will never miss the excitement of wondering if she will make it back alive. So Mr Huntley has really only sabotaged his own happiness.

JK 9/11/2009 1:45:36 AM
I left South Africa 11 years ago and now live and work in the US . From what I understand there is still a mass exodus from the country. Please understand this, ANY SOUTH AFRICAN STILL LIVING IN SOUTH AFRICA HAS NO IDEA JUST HOW GOOD THINGS ARE OUTSIDE OF THE COUNTRY! I know this because my entire family still lives there. If you can leave - do it! Don't settle.

Doc Lize 9/11/2009 6:03:55 AM
@Adam: I like your style!
@Karen and the other moaners: What is it with you people, wishing someone close to positive people be raped/ murdered etc!You are abusive, mean people that want to drag everyone down into the hole where you live.
@Eugene: if you actually look at the stats, most crime is black on black and white on white crime. Most murders and rapes are also by people the victims knew, like their husbands or wives.
@Piet: I feel for you, bru. Sell the house, quickly!

Way back in the seventies I knew a couple of straight up-and-down South Africans who got refugee status in the Netherlands by pleading sensitivity too great to be living under the nasty apartheid regime in SA, and that they were in danger of being incarcerated for their liberal political veiws. That the government then was nasty, yes, but these chaps, in all the time I knew them, never seemed to me to hold any strong veiws in the matter and lived their lives as far as I could see, well within the requirements of what passed for law back then, so were NOT in danger of being rounded up by the security police. However, at the time it was extremely difficult for white South Africans to find a welcome abroad and they wanted to move on because "this country was going one way and would be taken over by blacks" which they did no consider ideal. So kind Netherlands took them in, not realizing what a pair of two-faced cynics they were dealing with. Huntley looks and sounds exactly like someone who is not my cup of tea and not much of a loss to this country, but really, South Africans have been spinning yarns for decades about their personal safety to acquire residency in other countries. His approach has been fresh, if irritating. Don't know if his stories about number and nature of attacks are true or not, but that ordinary South Africans are living dangerously because of crime cannot be denied. We all have our stories. And oh, such passionate declarations of patriotism, such levels of denial, such huffing and puffing by all the Huntly bashers, whether deserved on not, irritate me more than his feeble 'tranetrekkery'. I am here because I want to be here. I am living dangerously. There is nowhere else I want to be. All this competitive mawkishness and self-congratulatory, patriotic chest thumping is beginning to get to me however.

Victimof Crime in great SA 9/11/2009 8:23:48 AM
It is so easy for you to have such a strong opinion about this story but yet you have also left the country, you say you will come back with the greatest of ease, but wait and see how it really is when you are back.

My wedding and even worse my Aunt's life was ruined by two black criminals who decided it was worth killing for a bag of clothes. Which they so by the way threw away later because there was nothing valuable enough in it. And this was a venue that was supposed to be very secure. My sister in law, that was also involved in the incident and had a gun against her head, thank the Lord they left her alone, has to live the rest of her life in fear not knowing who she can trust or if she can go into a room alone. And that isn’t the only incident that has happened to my close family. I must however applaud the police as they caught to two criminals but we will see if they get what they deserve in January 2010.

SA has a HUGE problem with crime and I agree with all the previous comments that it is time that it is brought into daylight with 2010 coming. Also the media and government are turning the story into their favour as they don’t want to be seen in such a bad light. I agree it isn’t a question of blacks committing more crime but crime as a whole that is an issue and that should be addressed.

So, can anyone guarantee that if Huntley comes back he won't be a victim of crime? or that he won't be a victim of racism?

NO, YOU CAN'T.

But laugh away folks, it could be you next - Raped, Robbed or Murdered, or maybe only your wife or kids.
