VIDEO: Freak waves in Stilbaai

by
2008-12-24 12:36

Cape Town - News24 User Jason Weeks sent us this video of strange waves moving up the Goukou river in Stilbaai on December 24.

"Every sevenm minutes a small wave of water flows up the river against the outgoing tide and against the wind," said Weeks.

"The last time we saw this was when the quake and tsunami hit on the 26th of December a few years ago."

"This video was taken 5km up the river, from the Goukou river mouth, so that gives you an idea of the force behind the waves."

Can you help us explain these strange waves? Leave your thoughts in comment box below.

Karen's brother 12/24/2008 1:47:59 PM
It's a tidal bore.

Zee 12/24/2008 2:13:31 PM
Could it possibly be the earthquake that took place in Tonga today? Wild guess but maybe!

Anon 12/24/2008 2:15:00 PM
Probably related to the earthquake that hit Tonge today......What else could it be.....The Loch ness monster!!!!

Johan 12/24/2008 2:16:22 PM
Hi, Might be related to the earthquake that hit tonga then?

cj 12/24/2008 2:45:28 PM
Its a tidal bore. I have always been under the impression that the Federal Reserve Bank in the USA was wholly owned by the state. Apparently I am wrong. This is a predominantly privately owned institution, practicing fractional reserve lending and is accountable to shareholders. Surely, this is a contradiction of enormous significance in these desperate times? Who are these private shareholders and what is their influence in the current economic climate

Yaaaaa, really "FREAK" and really "WAVES"??!! No doubt tidal bore. Search pororocas on youtube and see what real ones look like!

Probably a volcano forming under the water. You're seeing water displacement.

Wisdom says... What a pity Malema ( where did he get a Roman christian name?) , who is on stage, and yes, has the following of millions, does not have the brains to engage before he opens his mouth.
This country needs wisdom - we have the people to succeed of all colours. All this "D"head is doing is promoting reverse apartheid.
What a pity he has no vision of the future for South Africa as a world player.
Strongly suggest that he uses the R300,000.00 per month (Protection cost)to get educated - I am sure the Mandela Foundation could help ! Read the article...
