Individuality amidst community

by Hanno Langenhoven
2009-11-09 13:00

In a recent post, Diving Deep, I argued that individual independence as a benchmark for maturity and success has certain adverse effects. It was promptly pointed out that individualism is not the problem but rather the solution and that communalism (collectivism) is problematic.

The question underlying both the post and many of the comments is the tension between the rights and privileges of the individual in relation to the welfare of the community, large and small, environmental and human-environmental.

Recent statistics gave the number of jobs lost in the last three months in South Africa as topping 440 000. For the welfare of the community at large I would think that this difficulty needs to be shared through individual action.

A hypothetical example, if I made a R1 000 per hour off the back of others inability to meet certain payment deadlines, I will now have more work than ever, but I might lower my burden on the unfortunate by 40%. In this way the individual benefits from the upsurge in work and the feeling of well-being and the community benefits by sharing the burden.

The same can be said for the community. In a situation where an individual becomes destitute the community needs to act as one to shoulder the burden. An example here might be the environmental crisis (which might be seen as an "individual") and the need for community, small and large, to effect a positive future for our children. Communal rationing during the World War 2 and the banning of CFCs are examples that come to mind.

The balance is disturbed when there is an over-emphasis on either one or the other. The emphasis on individual independence leads to the rape of nature and the exploitation of people with the resulting gap, ever widening, between the rich and the destitute poor. This in turn then leads to an unstable environment in which riches might become a safety liability and even bad for individual health.

On the other hand, an over-emphasis on community negates the individual identity. This leads to the loss of diversity and humanity which negatively impacts on the richness of the community, for example in creative expression, and on the ability of the community to react to threats and challenges. The end result of an impoverished community is most likely to be death.

A healthy community is essential for individuals to flourish, be creative and live life to the fullest. Rudyard Kipling captured this truth the best when he wrote: "The strength of the Pack is the Wolf and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack".

Balancing individual pursuit and wants with communal responsibility, I think, is a much greater benchmark for maturity and success.

Wait just a minute there bub, I pay my taxes and I work my ass off to get where I am today. My hard earned tax's should be directed to those less fortunate than me. However, John Q Taxpayer continues to recieve the ANC shaft by irresponsible spending and self enrichment. Who suffers? The countries once enviable infrastructure and the communities who voted for these 'comrades'. A Healthy country is not possible when it is riddled with the ANC virus.

Cynical 11/9/2009 1:36:50 PM
Ho hum, yawn, ho hum......next article please(Not from the author, mind!).

Glock 22 11/9/2009 1:40:08 PM
What balance is there where only a hand full of people are hard working ad tax paying and the rest just sits back with open hands? These days open mouths as well. For how much the contribute and how much say they have I dont see any balance.

kolobe 11/9/2009 1:51:02 PM
and whats the anc connection?or for the still to come comments, the malema connection?anyway apartheid disturbed the balance for 350 yrs with the majority having to shoulder for it.now that is less matured

JC 11/9/2009 2:01:01 PM
Africa needs to lose the "African handshake", which is holding out cupped hands for donations.

fisher 11/9/2009 2:13:00 PM
@ Kolobe - why did it Africans 350 years to take back "their land"? sign of weakness maybe. Minority group controlling a majority group in their own land, you should be ashamed.

Oom Piet @Cynical 11/9/2009 2:18:34 PM
I see you are still here in SA buddy. Good!

@kolobe 11/9/2009 2:20:34 PM
Think again, 350 years when you oppressed the native bushmen when you journeyed from the north. And your government is still doing it to this day except to the whites now. Mission accomplished, countries should start placing sanctions on SA as it's still in apartheid. Wake up FOOL!!!

Bongani to fisher 11/9/2009 2:22:34 PM
Herein lies your answer you stupid little twit: Is it a sign of weakness when 5 robbers hold up the entire bank and its stuff?

SimonP@Kolobe 11/9/2009 2:22:40 PM
Please direct me to somewhere that will confirm your claim that apartheid in South Africa lasted 350 years.

Poloyatonki@Kolobe 11/9/2009 2:27:33 PM
Fisher is an idiot. You don’t have to be ashamed, The majority is gonna rule till the son of man comes.

CTheB 11/9/2009 2:37:22 PM
As said before, independence and not taking responsibility for one's actions are not the same thing. Perhaps some of the ills in society stem from a mistaken conflating of the two, but they're still not the same thing.

I'm suprised that anyone said a sense of community (as distinct from communism) would be the source of the current problem.

However, as with the communism, your approach has merit, but also a significant flaw - both assume that everyone will play fair. It is likely that there will always be those who won't play fair because they'll notice they don't have to. Someone could simply choose not to work if they know that the community will come to their aid just like someone could simply choose to do only a mediocre job since they'd know under communism that they'll get the same as the person who works really hard.

For any such system to work there has to be a self-correcting mechanism built in to prevent abuse. These won't be in the form of hard-and-fast rules since each situation is different and the particular circumstances will have significant effects.

Yes, I'm aware that capitalism also suffers from being open to abuse, but it at least does not encourage mediocrity and provides the opportunity for anyone to improve their situation rather than their situation being dictated to them by the state.

fisher 11/9/2009 2:39:11 PM
Bongani - Im just saying Africans should have tried a little harder to fight oppression and slavery. Whites took advantage of your weaknesses. Survival of the fittest. The bank and its staff dont have weapons, Africans did have weapons but just couldn't fight back properly.

Halfwise 11/9/2009 2:41:06 PM
After 350 years we can look at the word balance.

Lou @ Glock 22 11/9/2009 2:54:49 PM
There are many hardworking people fall below the tax bracket simply because they are in low paying jobs; do not deny them their contribution. That is just an insult and it shows your ignorance.

Tumelo @ Fish 11/9/2009 3:04:32 PM
I wonder if you would still have the same "weakness/survival" opinion if 2 robbers hold your whole family in your house and do as they please before leaving.

Gerhard 11/9/2009 3:04:47 PM
Good boy Halftwat! That means that you have finished "A" and is busy with the beginning of "B"!!! Long way to go to "Z". Then you will be able to communicate after reading the whole dictionary!!!

Gerhard 11/9/2009 3:05:42 PM
AND IT TOOK YOU YEARS!!

Tebza Ngwana to Fisher 11/9/2009 3:13:33 PM
Which weapons did Africans have? Knobkerries? Assegais? Let's look at whites' weaponry: Machine guns? Bombs? Rifles? Do you honestly expect that Africans were that stupid? Besides, the land dispossession was not a once off thing. It was systemic, and took place over a number of years.

In the meantime Africans were using all peaceful, non-violent means to engage with the various governments. Things came to a head in 1948 when apartheid was introduced, and in 1961 the ANC adopted a resolution to embark on an armed struggle to match the then regime's fire with fire.

However, the government of the day had support from the US, Britain and other countries. It took quite a while until their support became unsustainable and they had to abandon the apartheid regime with international pressure becoming unbearable, which culminated in the "reforms" which PW started introducing. Visit exclusive books and read up fisher. That will help you not to make foolish comments

Point Blank@halftwit 11/9/2009 3:20:45 PM
Good for you! Now for the next 350 years we going to look at the word CAT...

Cracker 11/9/2009 3:20:58 PM
To the author of the letter: Your views are neither original nor intelligent.
To Kolobe: Reality eventually catches up with fantacy. People are becoming less inclined to fall for the racist and apartheid lines. Even the ANC seems to have given them up. You have nothing of practical value to contribute.

fisher 11/9/2009 3:31:07 PM
@ Tebza - we all have weaknesses. But you cant escape the fact that Whites (no matter how they did it) ruled Africans for 350 years. All Im saying is that NOT EVERYTHING BAD can be blamed on whites. Blacks are not as perfect as you think. @ Tumelo - the ANC government took away my right to own a licended gun and protect my family against savages that do have guns.

Africans truly believe that they have done NO WRONG. Very frustrating when you cant take responsibility for your own actions.

fedup 11/9/2009 3:34:09 PM
iiyyhooooo what a boring ass article. i swear i passd out after reading the first paragraph. what are you on about man???!! dang!!!

@Oom Piet@Cynical 11/9/2009 3:37:43 PM
LOL Boet he is still here even after all the yawning?

@Kolobe the clown 11/9/2009 3:38:39 PM
"apartheid disturbed the balance for 350 yrs" Simple maths 1994 (when apartheid was scapped) minus 1948 (when it was introduced equals either 46 or 350?

School BOI 11/9/2009 4:10:09 PM
Im sorry to break the news to you tebza but the british did not have machine guns at that time...

Cracker@fisher 3:31 11/9/2009 4:14:33 PM
"But you can't escape the fact that Whites (no matter how they did it) ruled Africans for 350 years."

Pardon, your statement is not good enough. You have to explain how it was possible to rule "no matter how they did it" if Whites did not control the whole country for 350 years. At least we should try to stick to the real facts. It is lies and half-truths such as yours that add up to a distorted view of South African history. Some of us do still have a regard for the truth.

Shells 11/9/2009 4:19:55 PM
WHAT?!

Tebza Ngwana to fisher 11/9/2009 4:30:13 PM
Where did anyone say blacks are perfect? You raised an issue and now that answers have been provided, you open up yet another can of worms.

I will also like to know what I as an African did WRONG to you because you are generalising.

Can't we.... 11/9/2009 4:55:58 PM
Rather talk about the criminal that shot his winky off? Bwhaaahahaha!!!!!!! Ahhh... please? I bet it'll be far more interesting than talking about the author and his thingy called.....

Izak Burger 11/9/2009 8:36:18 PM
Hanno,

You will like this book:

http://www.amazon.com/God-Actually-Probably-Objections-Unconvincing/dp/0745953913

Towards the end there is a chapter about that balance you talk about. The author then argues that on issues of social importance (poverty, health care) we should lean to the left, while on issues of morality we should lean a little to the right. Interesting reading.

Eles 11/10/2009 7:59:17 AM
All the ANC had to do in 1994 was focus on education for kids and assist the poor through adult education centres and housing etc. Don't blame anyone else for the very real ANC consequence of appoint incompetent people into positions they are not qualified for because this is the reason municipalities, schools, hospitals, eskom, sabc etc are in the disgraceful state that they are not because they didn't expand properly - too many chiefs and not enough indians! Who is actually doing the work? The ANC are solely to blame they would not listen they still won't. Over the weekend I went on a scenic drive and let me tell you I can tell you exactly why so many black south african kids go missing with terrible consequences - all their parents fault. These kids walk the streets as little as five years old, that is why they fall down drains (that they probably removed), that is why they drown or are kidnapped I hear all this nonsense about ubuntu - seems to me the african community are only interested in standing together to strike.

kolobe 11/10/2009 8:17:33 AM
apartheid was not introduced in 1948,it was formalised then.has been around for 350years

twisted 11/10/2009 9:36:48 AM
Find yourself a copy of Ayn Rand's "The Virtue of Selfishness". This book will help you overcome the leftist propaganda you are obviously a victim of. But if you can't count don't bother trying to understand logic. Ubuntu is at the root of poverty - not history. It ensures that individuals can't progress. If you want to monitor which countries are doing well, just watch for the direction that skills flow in. These days quite a number are flowing into cyberspace and away from the clutches of the takers.

Tebza Ngwana to fisher 11/10/2009 12:38:21 PM
Where are you? You seem to have vanished like vapour at the sight of the sun. I need answers to my questions

Mad hatter 11/11/2009 2:15:47 PM
WRONG !!!! Read a history book , something written in a book not passed around orally .
