Back to the dark ages

by Wayne G
2009-11-02 11:15

The Dark Ages is a term of used as a historical reference point to a perceived epoch of cultural decay and societal collapse that occurred in Western Europe between the collapse of the Roman Empire and the eventual recovery of learning many years later. It was a time of disease, poor sanitation, lawlessness, poor education and a general decay in cultural development. Popular culture has gone even further in its explanation describing the dark ages as a time of backwardness, where society seemed to stagnate and regress.

This societal, cultural and economic regression as a current point of reference takes us to South Africa today. We are in the midst of a socio-economic landslide. If the dark ages were shrouded in backwardness and decay of society then we are living in that same shadow today in South Africa. You just need to look around to see it. The ANC nobility are getting fatter off our hard labours while we are getting poorer. If we break SA's current dark ages down into "segments of darkness" we may gain a clearer more concise understanding of our predicament.

The dark ages were only labelled centuries after the fact and people living during this period were largely oblivious, if not ignorant of their unfortunate epoch. This same ignorance is evident in the ANC's leadership and their loyal to the end masses that seem to be totally blind to the current position and just accept the degradation of our society.

Regression of education

SA's level of education and substandard quality is now amongst the poorest in Africa. So in 15 years we have declined rapidly from being the country with the best education standards in Africa to our current status of amongst the worst on the continent. There is even talk now of dropping the distinction levels from 80% to 70% and reducing the number of subjects to decrease work load and associated administration. So education regression mired in mediocrity is the government's solution to improving South Africa's education levels.

The dark ages of South African education are upon us and it is getting darker by the day. The education department's idiotic solutions are no solutions at all, just more of the same thing that got us into this tragic landslide. Education is the only thing that will pull us out of this deep dark hole. Our government needs to buy text books and pay teachers instead of buying luxury German cars for their ministers. What on earth could be more important than educating our children? Dictatorships have been known to deploy such tactics currently used by the ANC to keep the masses uneducated and dependant, unable to freely think their way out of their problems. They are so blind that they can't see the link between the ANC and their suffering.

The South African brain trust is in a worse recession the economy. Most of our brains are now contributing to the progression of countries like America, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. They have all left our shores in search of a better life for their families and can you really blame them? This brings us to our nest discussion point.

Violent crime and lawlessness

We are the undisputed world leader in violent crime. We have 50 murders a day and even more rapes and assaults on our women and children. This is unacceptable and another paradigm used to describe the dark ages where these crimes against humanity were common place, probably as regular an occurrence as today in South Africa. Witchcraft and other evil idiosyncrasies are leading people to believe that raping a baby will cure you of HIV and other horrific draconian practices that my mind battles to comprehend.

Thugs move around freely and control us through intimidation and fear. The police are hopeless and are not a force. They are data capturers and for lack of a better term "the mop up squad" they arrive at the scene after the fact, take a few statements and fingerprints and off they ride into the sunset never to be seen or heard from again.

One of the biggest employers and contributors to the SA economy is the private security sector. Their mere presence in such unfathomable numbers is a prime indicator of a country with an impotent police force. Even our police employ private security companies to guard their assets. Have you ever heard of anything more absurd?

Dark Age of Disease

We have the highest HIV infection rate in the world. Diseases that were eradicated in the western world years ago are as prevalent here as the common cold. The residents of Alexander Township are constantly tested for bubonic plague. TB, typhoid, dysentery, cholera are examples of deadly disease that are common place. These are the same diseases that wiped out entire populations in Europe during the dark ages. You need just take a walk through the infectious disease wards in some of our government run hospitals to get a true taste of the dark ages in modern day South Africa.

Poor sanitation and hygiene are major causes of concern with raw sewage running into our rivers and polluting our fragile ecosystem. The lack of access to basic medication is another massive problem indicative of our government's inability and gross incompetence in looking after its people. Denial is the order of the day while the bodies pile up in the government morgues.

The rich getting richer

Only elite few and our materialistic government employees are benefitting from the current age of darkness. They haven't changed their modus operandi to reflect these trying times, they just keep on spending and letting us fit the bill for their gluttonous madness, spending R50m this year alone just on luxury cars. The ANC's arrogance and ignorance in defending their actions is evident in every minister's defence when questioned about their spending habits.

We could go on all day comparing the dark ages in Europe to the dismal current state of governance that is destroying South Africa. Even the die hard ANC supporters need to open their eyes and see that their beloved emancipators have failed them dismally. There is absolutely nothing that has improved here since they took up office in 1994. We have regressed to a point nearing that of no return. All we have is a long list of unmet promises, squandered millions, failing parastatals and corrupt officials.

We used to have the best education, infrastructure, health care and professionals on the continent. Let's get that back. We can have all of that without the old oppressive white minority government or the current greedy, corrupt and incompetent ANC. Surely there is some force out there willing to take us forward into the light and instil some pride and self respect in our floundering communities tortured by drugs, corruption, violence and intimidation.

In conclusion very much like the collapse of the Roman Empire ushered in the dark ages in Europe, so too did the collapse of the prejudicial Nationalist government in South Africa give rise to the dark ages of ANC rule and associated decay. Luckily for Europe the dark ages eventually passed with its fare share of moral and economical decay giving rise to the next era where society began to advance again. We need to pick ourselves up and begin rebuilding our shattered country brick by brick.

A lot of research went into what most of us allready know and the rest do not want to know, as they have been "Freed" by the ANC, so the ANC can do whatever they like and it will be accepted, Blindly. nogal Sad ne!!

"Even the die hard ANC supporters need to open their eyes and see that their beloved emancipators have failed them dismally."

Well, unfortunately they won't! That is why the government keeps them uneducated. What you don't know, you don't want!

And with Eskom it is going to get even darker!

And then with load shedding, comes more crime!

How do we change they minds 11/2/2009 11:45:53 AM
how do you change the anc supporters minds,i personally dont think its possible .They are like hungry lions following they food .Please my FELLOW comrades the anc is doing nothing for us .The DA cannot bring back the old days ,they look like our only hope for the future .So lets stand up and be counted ,But how do we do that ,NYONE GOT ER

I agree with you and what frightens me more is the clear stupidity of the ANC youth league leaders and their supporters with them in charge this country would be at its worst but who cares whilst fatcats get fatter and line overseas bank accounts - maybe thats where all the missing funds have gone!.

Jay- Jay 11/2/2009 11:51:23 AM
I believe there is an increasing support base. Th question remains: Where do we start. A suggestion was a national tax and ratepayers association. None of these concerns will be addressed if no action is taken. Can the entrepeneurs etc. come forward with definite proposals and the formation of an official body to belong to and to address this. A new political party is in my view not an option.

BJM 11/2/2009 11:56:31 AM
True reality. The ANC government has closed all doors to a fully fledged democracy.Only a few are getting richer and the poor poorer. Unfortunately South Africa will become the WORST governed country in Africa. If you think Zimbabwe is bad, give South africa another 5 years. It will be mayhem. At the moment We have incompetant people in control of SA. Nationalisation will soon be the buzzword in SA

godfrey 11/2/2009 11:58:33 AM
@WAYNE G:I hear you, but what would you call the apartheid period when some people were denied BASIC human rights simply because of their skin colour, when people were burnt alive by the Security Police who were having a braai and beers and the victim screamed in pain( remember Eugene de Kock), he even said he could smell human flesh burning. Some people were blown away with dynamite while still alive by the apartheid security police. Since you are an expert on History, what do you call this period which the enforced a system the United Nations call a crime against humanity? Does an enlightened race do that to another human being?

BigBoer 11/2/2009 12:00:38 PM
This isn't a South African problem it's a worldwide thing. We reached our peak a few decades ago. The average IQ in the US now is actually lower than it was in the 60's. In 1969 we went to the moon but now we can't. People nowadays don't want education and progress just entertainment. I was in the US 2 weeks ago - most people spend their time eating and being entertained. And the main stream media propagates filth. The drug addicted youth of today will not be good leaders so in 20 years , even if our technology moves forward, soceity will be worse off...

ChapStick 11/2/2009 12:04:40 PM
Wait now for Bobo, Tumelo and the rest of the 'comrades' to deny everything in this article...and blame it on 'imperialist propoganda'.

Its is called wrong and that is why it was stopped. Now watch your anc doing even worse things to its own people. Give them 5 more years. They on the way to becoming the next mugabe's . You wont believe me or anyone telling you this, So just watch and time will show you. Remember these words today please. Glock

Baboon 11/2/2009 12:13:16 PM
Godfrey, because the last regime was bad, does that mean this one can be too and that's OK? That is your flawed logic. The roman empire was hated by the conquered - especially the chiefs and warriors, and there were those who celebrated when Rome fell. Only the chiefs - or their descendents and the warriors of the conquered tribes proved no kinder to their own people. In Zimbabwe now... many of the poor and weak long for their old oppressors - because they're a step up on the new ones.

I totally agree with the author! However, the "blind" masses are following the Pied Piper (ANC) straight into darkness and all of that while thinking the government are doing it for "us". Actually everything the ANC government is doing is to enrich themselves and a small elitist minority.

@Zizo 11/2/2009 12:18:22 PM

A few weeks ago I asked the question if anyone affected by a civil war can see the same signs of a looming civil war in SA? News24 did not publish the question. I ask again, is there anyone else out there that lived/participated in a civil war that can give us some indication if this is around the corner for SA ?

Spiderman @ godfrey 11/2/2009 12:21:44 PM
Although I agree with EdK being an a$$, just remember both sides of the story (and then there is the third - truth.)

The killings in the church, bar, Church Street, bombs in JHB (Tony Factor Centre, OK Eloff Street, Carlton Centre, Edgars, etc.) etc.

Yes apartheid was and is wrong! Wish you could be there when we boys were on the border (32 Battalion and others). Both black, white, San, etc. fighting together, sleeping in the same tents, eating the same food, and covering each others a$$es to keep ALL our families secure and safe!

Bodge 11/2/2009 12:21:48 PM

Education, hospitals, justice system ... Spent the weekend at Sun City and on Saturday the resort was on its knees as the staff were striking due to some internal matter. Almost no food to be bought that night - we were served by a Zimbabwean who said he came to work because he needs the money and has no interest in 'their issues'. Ha Ha, know what the international investor said who shared our table? Bye Bye South Africa, we'd rather invest in a country that is predictable and stable. Thats 60 jobs gone .. in an area where jobs are few and far between. Cry with me for the beloved country.

geanann 11/2/2009 12:45:26 PM
Excellent article. The problem is the apathy of many, the naivety of those who should raise the alarm, the blind optimism of those who believe wht they do not see will not harm them. As for the majority...they do not have a clue and are just waiting for the promised handouts.

This is a very good written article. The government before 1994 did the same as the current government is doing it's a repeat of power all over again. We must be very aware that SA could become like ZIM if this way of living and people's greediness for money persists. GOD HELP SA

@all the ANC supporters, you and the ANC are slowly dragging this beautiful country into the ashes just like the rest of Africa. It doesn't matter what the intelligent people tell you, you don't listen..

The dumbest person is one that's wrong but believes he is correct, while everything around him falls to pieces. Just like our country, slowly falling to pieces. The people ruling our country is a huge example of selfish rubbish that tells the supporters what they want to hear and doing the exact opposite....

so bring the lower education to educate the incompetent stupid masses of our country to BEE them into top positions and bring this country to its knees..

Go watch IDIOCRACY that's our parliament and the masses supporting it.

The typical expected response from the ANC-supporters will be the good ol' race card, but this is nothing to do with race, this is democracy and free speach at work. Generally ANC supporters cannot see that, because the truth is that calling this article racist is the proof needed that the ANC supporters are kept uneducated by their leaders.

ANC-supporters, please try to reply to this article without mentioning race if you'd like to be taken seriously.

Guess what :my little ANC friends.its your lucky day.Im moving to NZ Auckland with my whole family in six months time.2x Drs Mbchd (wife)and Mother in law=ave tax=R20000 PM to GOV - R480 a year.1x Architect -R21000 Tax per month R15200.00 less for gov,Me business man R10000 tax per month less,Sister Hear dresser -1000 pm ,dad SAP CAPT R3200 tax pm,Mom director R23000 tax pm,Fath in law boil maker ,+-R6700 tax pm,sister older Maths Teacher lots brain drain for RSA R2000, tax lost.we will be closing down a small business as well - tax of R200 000 p year. that's a total loss of R1176800 per year for all of us.to you that might not sound a lot
But when looking closely RSA has just lost a another two dr's an architect a MATHS teacher a very experienced Police officer,Boiler Maker, hairdresser and employer.
By the way we have calculated our monthly taxes together and the total you see here is excluding the Vat we pay excluding property Taxes licence fees . Think about it People, for every skilled white Family that leaves like mine" 8 people" take it over a period of lets say 15 years ,including inflation about R26 798 000. for just 8 skilled people x that by 12 x 8 families R319 824 000.00 and that's only 96 people paying tax over a 15 year period.that's a lot of social grants ,RDP houses and Executive vehicles for those ANC officials. so think about it .(THESE THINGS ARE TRULY MAKING THE DARK AGES HAPPEN)ons sal lewe ons sal swerwe ons van jou suid afrika.I am so sorry RSA (lastly: why struggle in the hands of your enemy when you can move to a nice place where you and family are safe )

@Enrust & Godfrey 11/2/2009 2:06:02 PM
The period before 1994 was wrong. However, what is being experienced today is worse. The sad truth is that the worst is yet to come! Cliches and lies can only hide the truth for a while.

The future 11/2/2009 2:09:18 PM
There is only 2 ways this country is going to go, one we have a civil war and clean all the rubbish out of the system, and then after a couple of years we have again an empire corrupt and doing as they please, as history repeats itself, or two we watch the country turn into a Zimbabwe and live like that until all is lost. If people really care about SA they would stand up and stop paying tax, this will force government to their knees and then we will see who has the power in the country.

Sambok 11/2/2009 2:19:26 PM
I am part of a family that left Europe as skilled farmers and tradesmen, to build a trading post in an undeveloped country. This family settled in the Cape Province, until the "great trek" in 1836, when they ventured north over the Drakensberg. Part of my family fought the English and many died in concentration camps. Part of my family was at the battle of Blood River. The point is that I am South African. My roots are here, and my children will call this country home. If I am the last white man left in South Africa then so be it, but I will not run. I will not lay down and I will not be bullied.

Freddy makes a fantastic example of himself. And he's representative of a large fraction of our tiny little taxpaying population, evaporating like a little puddle on a hot day. Frankly though, this isn't a bad thing for SA. Uneducated people do not understand money and cannot handle it wisely. They are better off without any. In 100 years' time the government will be impotent, the pastoral way of life will reign, people will get by, as in the Dark Ages, and in their ignorance they may even be happy. Let's leave them to it.

Ahistorical 11/2/2009 2:40:11 PM
No comment on your point itself, but please don't use incorrect assumptions in your attempts bring it across. The "dark ages" was an acedemical term coined in victorian times to denote a perceived gap in written resources for the historians, brough on by the shift of power in Western Europe from a centralised Rome (who kept records of almost everything) to a decentralised Germanic culture (who had no need for the extensive record keeping). It's only as the monarchies in France and England started to consolidate their powers that the centralisation of state government necessatated the need for the extensive record keeping seen in the Roman period.

Culture itself did not decay, only replaced. Fotunately since Victorian times enough study has been made of the Anglo Saxon chronicles, Norse Sagas etc as well as extensive archeology conducted, shedding light upon this previous dark age. So much so that few academics even refer to the dark ages as such (migration era is a perfect example of correct terminology).

Also, the diseases you mention (TB, cholora etc.) continued to desimate populations upt to the start of the 20th century. In fact the really large health problems only occured after your so-called darg ages when the industrial revolution caused overcrowding in cities, leading to large outbreaks of TB and cholera. It was only during the Napoleonic wars that the connection between human feces and disease was established.

How sure are of this statement. I have lived in Alexandra and have never be tested ,all My friends live there and have never been tested ,my sister and her kids live there and have never been tested , son lives there and has never been tested and so does her mother , which Alexandra is this ? or are referring to the one In Egypt .You need to get your facts right before you write down such nonsense.Your ignorance only serves to prove that you long for the good old days when the money the gov.t got from tax was only used to improve the lives of whites only. So how can we withhold tax? How can we not be thrown in Jail for such acts? and how do we defend each other and those that are now trying to take the power back? I want my job, but this kind of decision requires military action. How can I be an empployed part of the system and still fight for my rights? I dont want to send this country into war, but that seems to be the way we heading. Must I now get an AK 47 and start patrolling my own street? and then shoot 1st and ask questions later? That is not the answer we need.

This writer can not be faulted on one thing he writes. Honestly, I'd rather live under partheid, be safe, be scared of the rooi gevaar (knowing they were being fought in another country) and with a relative free, though corrupt government. Now this might sound harsh, but it will still be better than what we have nor, or living in another country. The black people honestly have to asked themselves what their vote is worth, with such a bad government.

What a well written article, no matter how positive one would like to be there are so many pointers taking our wonderful country back into the black and white out of the rainbows.I read this weekend that TV licenses are being done away with .. grea says the masses .. taxpayers will pay .. groan says the taxpayers yet again .. oh and the bit that says that the Communications Minister will OK everything that gets to be shown on the nations taxpaid TV -- dark ages indeed ..

Please contact the Sandton SPCA to confirm this information. I was informed by one of their senior employees that it is rife in Alexander. (The Alexander near Sandton as my article clearly states). FYI Bubonic Plague is transmitted in one of several ways. Usually it is transmitted when an infected rodent or flea bites its victim. If you live in Alex and are bitten by a flea or rat I suggest you take yourself down to the clinic to be tested. Bubonic Plague has been found in Alex and that is a FACT. So check up on your facts before adding your 2c worth.

@Ahistorical 11/2/2009 4:30:50 PM
So what you are trying t say is what the letter says. “The fall of Rome brught on the dark ages….. “So what if it wasn’t totally correct historically, what is anyway? It’s all up for interpretation and assumption.

Ginger 11/2/2009 5:34:48 PM
Africans fear witchcraft and label things witchcraft but do not infact ever practice witchcraft - that is a misnomer - much like the dark ages of Europe.

Witchcraft in part of a European Tradition where as Bad African magic which involves muti murders and all those awful things is a whole different ball game.

However I do have to agree with your article - done very logically and shows a clear comparisom.

Doug 11/2/2009 7:28:06 PM
Used to have the best education on the continent? Really? In 1990 very few of the majority of South Africans had any education... let alone the best on the continent.

I read these articles about how SA used to have the best of this and the best of that. Every single one of these articles fails to take into account the fundamental flaw. ie: these best doctors were for the benefit of a select few.

When you compare the past with the present make sure that you take into account the inequalities of the past. In the last 15 years, how many schools have been built how many more children are educated every year than in 1990?

I agree that the levels of education have declined and that it needs to be addressed, I also agree that the ANC needs a reality check with regards to education and priorities, but you should not compare the old SA with the current SA and state that the old SA was better.

Well written Wayne. Africa is the dark continent, and yes South Africa is heading towards the dark ages. The current situation does not bode well for true democracy, only African democracy. Guess by the next elections South Africa will have a change in the constitution, allowing for a one party state. Dark ages indeed, and those that will suffer the most are the very poor people that put their trust in the ANC, and voted them into power.

base addict 11/2/2009 10:25:13 PM
Well written article. People with some intelligence will see where you are coming from and agree. The others are irrelevant and their opinions are "wotever" I am on my way out of this country too. Took a lot of courage as I love SA, but they can have it, I humbly give in and give up. Two tax payers leaving, fourteen people will now be unemployed. Sorry for you, my family is more important. Roll on 2010 when I can get the feck outta here. Yep! Thats me going, YAY!

Mic 11/2/2009 10:43:04 PM
Well played. Not many people are able to see the truth behind the lies that our arrogant government hide behind. Makes me want another drink. But they have not only done bad things. Yes they waste money, but our international relationships have improved alot. LET THEM FIRE ALL ANC TREASURY MEMBERS!!! BASTARDS WASTING OUR MONEY...

Jim 11/2/2009 11:12:24 PM
Hahahaha..HAU!...Great article....EISHH!..vote 'YES' for Mandelatopia...and then we'll live forever in eternal World Peace in our multi-culti feel-good Utopia founded on the 'values' (hahahaha...burp, fart!) of the Noble Savage. WOW!....aren't we MUPPETS?!

@godfrey 11/3/2009 1:17:10 AM
how do you not notice the 1st world standard vanishing? Only because your brocant run a country. look at AFRICA. How does a doctor qualify if he does not atten classes due to ``strike action`` and a pass mark of ,well, zero?

Nicole 11/3/2009 8:32:39 AM
I agree that we should stop paying taxes! It's about time we bring the government out of their brand new cars, to their knees! What kind of a place is South Africa turning in to? I live in Korea and when i tell people that you can't even enjoy a hike up lion's head in CT without being accosted by some low life wanting your things, they are amazed! They cant wrap their heads around it! And quite frankly, i think it's rubbish that we can wrap our heads around the violent crime in SA! I miss South Africa extremely but when i read about Police raping women and what the hell Julius Magrootbek has to say for himself, I cant bring myself to leave a safe place (Korea) to come back to a place like this. I am 5th generation South African, I want to come back, I want to live in my home country but not until we emerge from the dark ages! Very well written article and it is heartbreaking to admit that it is all so true!

Hallelujah brother!

Mtha 11/4/2009 3:11:43 PM
Who ever wrote this article is delusional. Just quoting three things he mentioned, Violent crime some of us who grew up in the 80's saw a lot of legalised crime people put to jail (that is 1000's of them) for questioning aparatheid, Bopatong massacare, tear gassed daily, beaten by dogs, hippo's in every street corner daily, people had to sleep before 7pm and other countless violences which may take a century to count. Education , as I recalled the pass rate for black matriculants was always below 40% and even fewer blacks qualified for Varsity I can not even start to count the drop outs. That is why we still talk about skill shartage. On being Rich our GDP has multiplied 4-5 folds, I see more cars bought, Mansions build, Malls build. And I just wonder what regression mean to DA. The prophets in this forum have prophesed that SA becoming Zimbabwe, for about 10 years now. I am now becoming despondent and it feels like the coming of Jesus.

Virgin Queen 11/5/2009 9:04:13 AM
There is nothing boring like an article on what we already know but the worst part is the lecture about the dark ages. Can we not start finding a solution for our transparent problems instead of writing articles day after the other, pointing fingers, yho!dont you people get tired of talking about the same thing?

Ramkat 11/5/2009 6:04:50 PM
Any SA resident who has lived here for the last 15 years would have to agree with Wayne's article. What a sad state of affairs.

Onke 11/6/2009 11:49:00 AM
@author, You know this is very simple my friend ..if you feel that way then go somewhere else !!it's as simple as that.Honestly jus pack up and go that way you only leave those who are willing to something to improve SA instead of crybabies like yourself. "dark ages" are you kidding me ?
Whites are never happy unless they're running the show and thats a fact so maybe u might get a chance in Oz or Nz who knows you can be the Scoutmaster for the kids in your neighborhood.

Thapelo 11/7/2009 4:50:53 PM
I've always believed that Africans are the only people with soothsayers amongst them, until I came across WayneG. White man who is paying you to be so negative. In 15years of the majority rule, I drive from work to my house, to my parents on tared roads. There is electricity, sanitation, shopping centers...need I continue? All these things you and your friends didn't see. Under white rule poverty was the order of the day, seeing a woman searching for food in the dump was normal. Whites in this country are in trouble because they do not understand how cruel apartheid was to the blacks. The evidence on TRC was a tip of the iceberg. You must be joking to think my president should drive around in citigolf. What is R50m in a country that has all the gold, platinum, coal, manganeese, alluminium? You just make noise no solutions. Your education system thought me that a locust has simple & compound eyes, where is that helping in my world?

simon 11/9/2009 9:25:39 AM
@Doug 07:28.
All I can say, Doug, is that it must have been the best education in Africa, else why is the rest of BLACK Africa so far behind? Why have they not produced societies that have contributed to human development? Regarding doctors, you are wrong as well. Baragwanath Hospital, THEN the best in Africa and a world leader, had some of the best doctors available, purely at the disposal of the black population. This is just one example. Have you heard of Medunsa?Your "facts" simply reflect your ignorance. Perhaps you also are a product of post-1994 mal-education.

AJ @ Thapelo 11/10/2009 10:07:01 AM
I see many women and men goiung through my garbarge - how is it better today. Aparthied was a Human rights crime, not economic. If tehre was no aparthid we would have a small elite (black) and EVERYONE els would be poor - with hardly any middle class (just like other African countries).

david 11/11/2009 8:51:22 AM
Well, compare the reason for the dark ages, the roman catholic church, and the reason for our current dark age, the anc.
enough said.
