'Satanic music' not to blame

Dear Editor,

Is it not amazing how when a misguided teenager does something utterly stupid and dresses up in black he is automatically Satanic and the music he listens to is Satanic?

I am a Christian and a fan of many heavy metal bands. As such I usually need to check out a band's lyrics before listening to it just in case it contains something dodgy.

Slipknot is not Satanic; in fact, they're not even close to Satanic!

Examples of Satanic bands are Dimmu Borgir, Rotting Christ and Cradle of Filth. These bands are openly Satanic and don't hide anything regarding this.

Personally, if I were to worry about the music kids are listening to it would be the supposedly "innocent" music such as Britney Spears and most of the rap artists out there. Even placing blame on them though is ridiculous.

There is also a reason there are "Parental Adivsory Labels" on certain albums. My question is, "Where were the parents while their kids were spiralling out of control?"

Music is not the cause of these events; the parents are squarely to blame for not spotting something wrong in their child and intervening!

i have to agree steve, whilst music does effect behaviour, where the hell were this kids parents when he was, as you put it, "spiralling out of control" (same as when people blame video games for their kids cocking up). the crap thing about 'satanic' bands, it that must of their music is rubbish, except for cradle of filth, amen & tool (apparently they are satanic???)

I agree with you 100%, well said. In fact you get a number of Christian hard rock bands out there, doesn't mean that a band is satanic when its just a level up on the volume knob.

Not much of a metal fan myself,but let's recapped, in the 50 & 60's rock and roll was devil music as well. when that turned out not to be so bad... something else was chosen. Scape goat for one's own negligence. Bad music out there, but not as bad as the fall of standards in society. Discipline disappeaered and moral values tumbled. Who's to blame??? Take a guess...

This I blame on the parents, you as a parent should know when something is wrong with your child, but it is far easier for some parent to drop their children off at a shopping mall with R300, obviously without the proper supervision these kids will get themselves into trouble, spiraling so far down that it is impossible for child to know the difference between right or wrong, therefore the parents had to notice that things are not all there an acted.

The kid was dressed in Slipknot clothing... The lyrics of most of the slipknot songs relate to 'kill' 'death' etc... The music does affect him, even if it was not the determining factor. This kid was an average student. He caused no havoc in school, he did not fail all his subjects. He did not fight, did not argue with teachers... Drugs most likely tipped him over the edge, giving Satanism the hold and the form in his head that made him do what he did... The music adds to it.. Sad really...

Agree that music should not carry all the blame when something goes wrong, but about Slipknot not being satanic...not in agreement about that. Seeing that one of the original members left the band due to stuff not sitting well with his Christian believes(wikipedia) and if wearing a mask displaying a face wearing a thorn crown, like the one of Christ, is acceptable, well then I'm wrong I suppose.

It's easy to pick on heavy metal because of it's image and the urban legends that surround it. Dealing with music, assuming there is such, with overtly satanic lyrics is easy - ignore it or take it as a spoof. More likely to corrupt, IMO, are banal pop songs that glorify sex for the sake of sex. "Sweat" by inner circle, or "I want to sex you up". The damaging stuff is on VH-1 and MTV and on mainstream radio.

I got into metal while at primary school, now in my thirties and still love it. Guy gets home finds wife in bed with other man kills her and says country music made me do it!!! I have been listening to metal for ages never killed anyone. What we should be working towards is getting rap music banned. I cal for an immediate moratorium on the distribution of rap music until this case is solved, it could be that this type of behavior is caused by metal heads being exposed to, to much rap and hip hop music. BAN HIP HOP and RAP NOW!!!!!!!!

Thank you, you have some common sense for a believer. Yes, you can't blame music for a clearly sick individual who needs serious phsycological help and maybe drug rehab. But that's besides the point. There is no satan or hell outside of christian mythology, so to a non-believer this boy was just mentally disturbed and nothing more. Blaming some boogeyman with horns is just trying to pass the buck of responsibilty.

Perhaps the guy was just psycho, high on drugs or he snapped. The devil definitely didn't make him do it because the devil doesn't exist. You can not blame Slipknot or satan for this tragedy. Look at two quotes for this story: "his friends said he was a quiet boy who kept to himself. "They said they all thought he was a nerd." Hmmm could this not be a more logical reason why he snapped? Then this "Satanic music was probably the cause of the attack." Now that is laughable.

I personally dont listen to secular heavy metal..but i do have a whole collection of Christian death and black metal bands, I personally choose not to listen to band's with negative lyrics but that is not the point here. I have said it before that i believe the lyrics of people like Britney Spear's, Madonna etc are far more impressionable on young minds due to the graphic sexual and promiscous message, and dont forget that they are reaching millions more with their " message".

it's not as if listening to Christian bands instantly converts the listener to Christianity. I have listened to U2 and Cliff Richard without becoming a Christian, to Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens) without converting to Islam, to Beck without becoming a Scientologist etc etc. I've also listened to Pink Floyd without wanting to commit suicide, and to Rocky Horror Picture Show and still have not wanted to put my wife's lingerie on. Blaming music is ridiculous.

I am a musician in a Hard Rock band myself. I also have two beautiful children who listens to music, even mine from time to time!The tragic event that took place should be seen as a VERY sad wake-up call to all parents, everywhere.This boy probably found listening to the music of 'Slipnot'[I'm not a fan...]gave him a channel to release some of his frustration/hate.Whatever the reasons behind his actions, parents should keep track of their children AND their emotions.

Satanism is a legitimate religion, just like Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and all the others. Just because a person is a Satanist, does not make that person evil any more than being Jewish or Christian makes you good. Everybody who wants to know the truth should read the Satanic Bible by Anton Lavey. It is available at all major book stores. I have been listening to Metal and playing Games since I was 12-13 years old (I'm already in my twenties), and I have never had the urge to hurt or murder anyone. I too am sick and tired of music and Games being blamed for violence at schools and irresponsible behaviour of the youth and, in some cases adults. What happened is genuinely terrible, and besides there could be other unknown factors as to why this happened (Parents? School?). Music and Games don't kill people, people kill people.

I cannot believe that news 24 actually added the piece in the article about Slipknot. Why bring the band and metal music into it? Obviously the kid was emotionally unstable, his problem lies a lot deeper than the music he listened to.

you will know that satan is spreading that exact lie - that music is harmless. Not true. Music is so unbelievably powerful. When one is feeling down, music can bring them back to life. When 'setting the mood', play a bit of Barry White and you'll see the results. I remember in high school b4 a rugby game we'd listen to heavy metal and/or rap music to get all psyched up. Yes, at the end of the day a person CHOOSES to do something wrong. But let us not for one second downplay POWER OF MUSIC. Take a club for instance. The music that is played at a club encourages drug use and a need to have sex right there and then. Look at a jazz club. Because of the music that is played there, the behaviour is different to that of a normal house/techno playing club. There are many more examples.

I listened to my younger brother's music (Slipknot) - a little bit of hard core for my taste - but to drive someone to madness/satanism - that's bull. Parents will blame everyone, but themselves when something goes wrong with their child. A child needs more then just education, food and a roof over his / her head - they need attention, , affection, respect and most off all guidance. Too many parents still live as if they are young and single. Once you are a parent your needs must come second.

Firstly, because a band highlights it's issues with organised religion, or even if it comments thereon does not make it satanic. By that logic all atheists, agnostics etc etc are satanists. Well, just went to their site after reading the article and it is not pretty, especially for kids (kids are not adults and will never be!!!). Mix this with any substance abuse and absent parents, today's school conditions and you get mentally disturbed kids that turn to killers, criminals, rapists etc. No matter how much you wanna justify what you listen to or watch, it won't change the effects it has on tender minds!!! I blame the parents. Im a Slipknot fan and find their music to be more about perseverence, strength and self-control. Yet Eminem incites violence, racial hatred and get airtime on KTV. After reading the article I asked my brother (who enjoys various metal bands but has, to my knowledge, not killed yet) if he knew anything about Slipknot being 'Satanic'. His response: 'Not even remotely!' Why not stop blaming TV, music, etc for violence, and face the reality: that we live in an extremely violent society?? I guess it's always easier to blame anyone/thing out of the ordinary than face up to the real issues and problems behind terrible events like this.

I listen to Nine Inch Nails and don't want to *** anyone like an animal. I love Rammstein, the music's awesome, but hey I'm not for war against other races. I'm 32, been listening to metal for a loooong time. I'm an atheist, so don't really care much for lyrics having any sort of deity references in it. I listen to Dimmu Borgir, Slipknot etc etc. and to be honest it actually calms me down when I listen to it. Drugs are bad though. Don't do em, don't buy em etc. Music must've been the reason Hitler killed so many people too. Wait heavy metal music didn't exist too. must've been that damn polka music!!!

Plus the only reference to slipknot in this whole tragedy is one school councilor that claimed the guy was dressed as slipknot band members. From the description, I would say he was dressed as a ninja or bank robber.

I grew up in a christian home where we listened to Ozzy, Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden etc. Just because someone doesnt conform to "normal" music they shouldnt be labelled as satanists. This is a clearly disturbed boy, and he would have snapped even if he was listening to ABBA...

Blaming music for allowing Satan to take hold of poor kids like this is so sad. Where were the parents instead of on their knees daily to pray for their child. Stop pointing fingers and saying " the devil made me do it" We alone are responsible for our actions. The devil can never make you do something you don't want to do, unless you allow him to. If parents would guide their kids and pray for them, incidents like this would never happen. It's not the music!!

I still believe it depends on the individual,but those that totally deny that music has any influence on a teenager is most probably exactly such an impressionable teenager.Music has an effect on the mood,classical music relaxes, heavy metal energizes. If someone is on the edge the slightest thing can trigger him/her, but it still depends on the individual and his/her situation.

Let's get the facts straight: Like many bands the youth are listeneing to, Slipknot grew up in a predominately Christian neighbourhood (Des Moines, Iowa), became adults, realised that organised religion was not for them, mentioned it in their songs. They use imagery and gimmicks in their artwork and live shows. The band members are not satanic. An early (Christian) bandmember left the band because of his religeous differences, but this does not mean that the rest are satanic!

This kid was out of control and it would have made no difference what music he chose to listen to. I hope we are not now going to do the whole 1980's satanic panic crap. I started listening to metal back when Iron maiden was big and happen to love Cradle of Filth. Still have yet to decide one day to start lopping peoples heads off.

look - the question here is not whether slipknot is satanic or not but rather 'what spiritual substance does the band and its music offer people.'answer is NONE this kid misinterpreted what it was and screwed up . Shit happens... People kill for Christ, Music, Sexuality etc. Music is just another mouthpiece of society... Problem is that society is in a very dire situation. Kid got alienated, his nerves couldnt take it and he cracked - you can blame it on anyone just as you can blame the acts..

A complex issue that requires not hot-headed and emotional responses, but cool analytical and critical dissection. I recall that one dr. J. Strijdom of Unisa pronounced authoritatively on a related religious issue: the discussion would benefit from his views, I'm sure. My view is the 'Satanism' is just a cop-out used by thrill-seeking kids. But our immoral society promotes these extreme responses. I'd like to hear the academics and predikante on this one!

How do any of you know what Satanic music is anyway. The church labelled KISS and AC/DC in my day. They used to tell us at veldskool that KISS was *Kids in Satans Service* and if we listened to them we would be those kids. Haha. This child must be terribly misguided to say he was a satanist. There are very few True Satanists in South Africa as I once read from a poll. At least Marilyn Manson is not getting the blame this time.

If this guy knows so much, one wonders why he isn't doing more to spot possible signs of extremely disturbed behaviour in kids, thus preventing swords being brought to school and so on. Yeah, he did a pretty good job of moving the attention away from the sword issue and onto a band (which has nothing to do with anything, really), but clearly he himself is failing to give kids any decent guidance...

The only thing that is relevant is he killed a kid with a sward. Music has nothing to do with it even if he was listening to Slipknot or The Beach Boys he would have done it anyway. At least Marilyn Manson is not to blame this time around.
