Optimistic about our future

by
2009-05-04 08:06

Wayne Groenewald, News24 User

With all the negative politics that have been saturating the media lately, at least we can draw real optimism out of the results of the 2009 election.

There are some momentous achievements that took place, and with it the winds of change have filled our sails.

We are one step closer to a becoming a real democracy that places all South Africans on a equal playing field and where race takes its place at the back of the deck.

Helen Zille has been given the mandate by the majority of the population of the Western Cape to lead the province, she has achieved every objective her and her party set out to achieve in the 2009 elections. They are the only party in the election who actually increased their market share, and this fact shows that the DA are on the move.

What these dogmatic staunch ANC supporters don't realise is that Zille probably fought as hard for human rights as they did and didn't get to where she is today by pure chance. She is an excellent leader who delivers on her promises, something the ANC should be inspired by.

The black population of South Africa do not need to feel threatened by the DA, they have no affiliation to the old apartheid regime and should rather be viewed as South Africa's first true all-inclusive, multi racial democratic party.

Over the next five years it is going to become apparent to the South African population that Helen Zille is exactly what we need to build our nation. The next generation of voters will realise that it is not about skin colour but about competence and accountability, both of which are not existent in our current government and soon to be president.

The ANC should take note of what happened to past dynasties who thought they would rule forever. If the ANC understood politics they would realise this fact.

The ANC should not see the DA as a threat and focus all its energy on portraying it as a racist white party. They should rather draw inspiration from them and learn from their policies and work together rather than apart.

A mature democracy often shows leaders from opposition parties uniting on common causes which will benefit their people. The DA is no longer a party that snaps at the heels of the ANC like a little Chihuahua, they are a party with a firm agenda and that is to expose all corruption and lead this country from the front as the super power of Africa.

I am very optimistic about our future, as I know eventually the people of this beautiful land will place themselves over blind loyalty to a party who were brilliant in campaigning for freedom but weak in the arena of good governance and corruption avoidance.

Stop day dreaming DA under the "little girl" is unprogressive. MY ANC MY VISION

Lauren 5/4/2009 8:20:40 AM
I concur 100% with the views as expressed in Wayne's letter. Although a resident of KZN,I for one am keenly looking forward to the progress of the governance in the Western Cape under the very capable leadership of Helen Zille. May it prove to be a new area in South African politics and a step closer to a true democracy for all.

Glock 22 c 5/4/2009 8:22:10 AM
If you cant realise that and is sitting back undera tree and waiting for the government to change your future , Well I bet you wont get anywhere. You want somthing done DIY. The century the masses realise that they will get out of poverty.

Anon 5/4/2009 8:27:22 AM
Equal playing field? Are you mad? Do you know how difficult it is for any other non-black person to get a job these days?

Fraud 5/4/2009 8:32:32 AM
You do realize though, that Zille's 'Stop Zuma' campaign only mobilized and consolidated the white votes. That campaign actually confirmed the perceptions black people have had about Zille and the DA. The DA may not be a racist party, but their actions create a different PERCEPTION. Thanks to that short-sighted campaign, the DA will not get buy-in from black voters for at least the next 30 years.

nigel 5/4/2009 8:33:44 AM
Im apalled by Malemas latest outburst calling Helen Zille a racist girl, does SA's president elect, condone this bullshit. Malema is taking this too far, elections are over...the people of the Western Cape have democratically elected the DA, Malema must accept this & deal with it, he must stop his totally unnaccepable utterings, the ANC must deal with him, this irresponsible, hate speech is not acceptable. The ANC must be held accountable for this idiot.

Phinah 5/4/2009 8:35:03 AM
We have heard this over & over again. Can we stop publishing campaign messages please, IS the voting not over yet? I am sure by now we all know that the DA is the only party that acually improved on their election results, and again Congrats to Helen Zille.

Christian 5/4/2009 8:38:16 AM
Hi Wayne, Your Letter sumed up concisely what I fell, the DA is well lead and should if left alone lead and serve the WC very well. The two questions that come to mind are: 1. Will the ANC let the DA rule or will they try and destroy what is achieved. 2. Will the average ANC supporter see the beneifits of true Leadership based on ability. Time will tell, God Bless.

alan 5/4/2009 8:39:03 AM
Excellent article, Wayne. When the ANC accuse the DA of being racialistic and anti-Black, they are talking total rubbish. Helen Zille and the DA have always fought against apartheid. Zille is proven to have set goals and then achieved them, unlike the ANC which has a history of horribly poor service delivery for 15 years now. May the people of SA realise that govt is there to serve the people and get things done. The DA is going to set an example for other provinces.

John 5/4/2009 8:39:25 AM
Optimistic? The only firm agenda I saw was the Alpha Chihuahua calling the pack to be on the heels of Zuma, and that is not real democracy to me.

Also Optimistic 5/4/2009 8:40:48 AM
I must agree with you Wayne, I find it very encouraging that the DA have won the Western Cape, their actions and performance will continue to win them votes and followers of EVERY colour who all want their country, whom they all love, to prosper. Sooner or later we all need to get over the Apartheid era, the younger generations cannot pay for their forefather's sins and poor judgement forever! We all need to live, work and prosper together and show the world the true South Africa.

I Voted DA 5/4/2009 8:44:30 AM
I agree with you, but the DA also needs to stop just critising ANC and also start working together to find solutions to the country's numorous issue. Black, White, Brown, Yellow, Pink and Purple people of South Africa, unite to make OUR future better, we must walk hand in hand to build this country. To paraphrase a legend: I hope and pray that one day we can look beyond colour of someones skin and see the content of their character and elect them to represent us all with honour and dignity!!

George 5/4/2009 8:52:41 AM
The proANC contributors to this column are obvviously going to shoot Zille down as just another apartheid wolf in sheeps clothing, but little do they know and realise what this leader is all about. The DA will gain more ground in the next elections - that's a fact - also, as time goes by more of the schooled children of previous ANC stalwarts will move support for the ANC. The ANC must realise that they have achieved liberation, period. Incompetence is a thing of the past.

joevezi 5/4/2009 8:52:52 AM
you lose it when you start bashing the ANC.

nigel 5/4/2009 8:53:31 AM
With all the massive challenges ahead, you would think that the ANC would stop worrying about the opposition, & start working on solving the countries problems. But instead of having the neccessary vision, they seem to be continuing with more of the same, by electing a shadow cabinet for the the W. Cape & the latest kindergarten rhetoric. If they start like this, they may very well loose the next election. If it wasn't for the fact that Zuma is Zulu, they would have lost another 6%.

Sinudeity 5/4/2009 8:55:52 AM
Stop day dreaming. The ANC under the little man is unprogressive. MY WCape MY TAX MONEY

Tiaane Chauckey 5/4/2009 8:56:51 AM
Hmmm pretty interesting. Its either that you are a sangoma or you are naive. I mean, how do you know that JZ will fail? Your heading is misleading compared to your contents. Yes HellZill can be okay as a mayor, let her prove herself first. Stop being negative about JZ. We dont need people like you in the country. Haai mam!

ME 5/4/2009 9:01:49 AM
This was a very good article. It is a pity that many ANC supporters will see it as a racial issue ONCE AGAIN and not see it for what it is. I am amazed at the fact that so many people can overlook the issues in this country due to colour. If I ever got the chance to get the opinion of - say - Obama - I would ask him if someone that has been charged (not found guilty) but only charged with corruption - be allowed to have an option at the presidency. The DA has come a long way - keep it up!

Point Blank 5/4/2009 9:05:31 AM
Yes it is another DA supporter and we proud of it. DA FOR A BETTER FUTURE!!

jerry 5/4/2009 9:05:51 AM
your stupid comment just shows that some people will never change their lemming mindset and insist that, no matter what ,theirs is the only way . it is about time that you learned that there is more to life than the ANC , become more charitable to your fellow south africans , and work with us to make this country a better place for all.

VG 5/4/2009 9:05:51 AM
"The ANC should not see the DA as a threat... They should rather draw inspiration from them.." Are you for real?? Ha ha haha ahah ha! this is the funniest thing I've ever read. A party that has the support of 65.9% of the electorate should seek inspiration from a party that represents 16% of South Africans? dude, stop smoking that stuff, it's dangerous

ME 5/4/2009 9:07:39 AM
Was it not you that said that you would stop writing here if the ANC did not get two thirds vote? Or much like the ANC government was that pure talk and no action??

M 5/4/2009 9:10:02 AM
And I've driven through the Western Cape just last week, saw the good and the bad and I can tell you, if the DA just marketed what they have achieved then the ANC would have to hang their heads in shame. The roads are in excellent condition, the city is clean and safe, most informal settlements have electricity/water. The ANC should go an remover their ugly posters, they haven't done so yet,yet the DA has removed theirs in Gauteng&Cape. Shame on ANC,typical laid back, don't finish a job, slackers.

Point Blank 5/4/2009 9:10:30 AM
I bet you that the ANC will do everything in its power to destabilise the Western Cape, they sore losers, very sore losers... Good luck to Zille, the people of the Western Cape have spoken, see Mandla THAT is how a REAL democracy works, so just accept it and move on.... DA FOR A BETTER FUTURE!!

Dewie 5/4/2009 9:10:46 AM
If u want to be a racist pack your bags. Its people like you that divides our diverse nation. You are NOT needed!!!! Hamba!!!!

Miss Thang 5/4/2009 9:15:28 AM
he's starting to get back to his old ways of name calling. Good on Hellen for not reacting to his accusations of her being racist.

wayne 5/4/2009 9:16:14 AM
You probably riding that bee gravy train aren't you? Pitty your "vision" won't allow you to see the cliff you are heading for. Keep the positive attitude up and you will get far.

Doorboot 5/4/2009 9:17:35 AM
I thought only the ANC supporters gloat like little children on a school playground. I am rather sad to see a DA supporter doing it. The ANC has competent leaders (Trevor) and one should not tar JZ yet. This letter does not encourage unity...

nigel 5/4/2009 9:21:46 AM
The ANC says it appointed a shadow cabinet for the W. Cape "to keep the DA on it's toes" regarding delivery of services....thats hillarious...I fear they have a more sinister agenda. BTW, who the hell is going to keep the ANC on it's toes to deliver to the other 80% of provinces, delivery hasn't exaclty been thier strong point, now has it.

Me 5/4/2009 9:23:55 AM
"Stop day dreaming DA" - was it not Martin Luther King Jr. that said " I have a dream"

Johncarlos 5/4/2009 9:24:52 AM
The ANC does not have many white and Indian votes, yet both races are represented way beyond their denographic by that party. Zille's DA has 80% of its members in high position being white, in a country that's 90% non-white. Then they come with their 'all inclusive' rubbish! They don't even make an effort to recruit senior members of other races. Supporting them is like being a black and following whites, instead of just following a normal healthy party. Even the ANC hires coloureds in the WC,

Guy @ the corner 5/4/2009 9:25:15 AM
when will it stop, I'm starting to think the DAers don't have any agenda outside of the ANC. It would have been nice to hear about the positive changes the DA will bring. It is sad that some people still think that we can achieve equal opportunities by ignoring past imbalances

Tjaart du Toit 5/4/2009 9:25:34 AM
Your article is still concentrating on blaming the ANC and promoting racism than coming with something that will let South Africans to unite in building a good governance. Why are you promoting division among people of this country? That you are a DA supporter doesn't mean that you should see bad things about the new administration. Now we have a new administration that is prepared to take this country forward. Please stop your racism kind of comments and lets move forward. Zille is no GOD......

Msholozi 5/4/2009 9:25:39 AM
It was interesting at first and then you had 2 go and slash the ANC, you're more optimistic about HZ and the DA and that future is a very bleak one, gud luck though

johncarlos 5/4/2009 9:26:53 AM
(cont) because they know who the majority in the WC is and are considerate. The ANC is racist in other things, but even they are more non-racist than the DA in terms of senior membership and selection of leaders. The DA deserves that tag of being called a white party.

Big Boy 5/4/2009 9:29:11 AM
ruling party supporters that shout nonsense was probably not even borne at the time or can't even remember cause they were in diapers, look at them now all grownup and still making stupid comments. i can see why you are this bitter when someone show you how it's done truthfully and honestly it strikes a nerve doesn't it good article... educate the ignorant so they may see the light.

Wisdom 5/4/2009 9:29:31 AM
Next election when the DA wins another province, how hard the anc outjies will CRY! Bad losers.

Sinudeity 5/4/2009 9:31:03 AM
But fraud, what actions, and different perceptions did JZ not create? Someone who 'looks out for the poor', while flying to rallies in a helicopter. Or, doing bits of corruption for an extra 500,000 pocket money. What about the perception of ALL the corruption going on in the ANC? Housing Scandal, Youth Empowerment Fund etc. The "Stop Zuma" campaign wasnt against a black man, it was against a CORRUPT man. Sol Kerzner can also pretend to be poor, and electioneer in the Townships.

Eles 5/4/2009 9:32:08 AM
You show your ignorance by being so disrespectful of someone who has done so much not surprising given how rude Malema is which too shows his ignorance. Be prepared to be shown up - it must be so frustrating for you that the leader clearly in a league of her own is a woman and white at that - am sick of this already be an adult and congratulate someone for a job well done! I'm looking forward to seeing what the DA is capable of. PS the freedom day concert was chronic - not surprising!

M 5/4/2009 9:33:01 AM
Indeed they are. They talk about "selective delivery of services", but I saw more electricity connections in informal settlements than here in Gauteng. Bummer for them. And I'm sure they had a waaaaay smaller budget. Just shows you how efficiency and not being corrupt makes one Rand in the Western Cape go 10 times further than the same Rand in ANC hands.

Mandla Mahlangu 5/4/2009 9:35:50 AM
Well if you believe that is ok!

AJ 5/4/2009 9:36:40 AM
I see because Malema called her a little girl, you copy him and do the same. Is there not an original thought in your head? If you must copy others, find someone better than him. We dont call you 'sheep' for nothing you know!

Mandla Mahlangu 5/4/2009 9:37:26 AM
Well dont worry the country will be better! "Working together we can do more" thats what we emphasize

M 5/4/2009 9:37:57 AM
I laughed very hard when I heard that statement. They can't even do their job elsewhere but now suddenly they are going to police others. More like taking notes and learn something. And JZ wants a corruption hotline, how weird is that? I'm sure if we report anyone of the ANC payroll or buddy, the complaint will be thrown in the dustbin. I still want to see that the ANC deals effectively with corrupt govt officials. That hotline is a JOKE.

Mandla Mahlangu 5/4/2009 9:38:15 AM
well i guess is another Mandla not me!

Thokozani 5/4/2009 9:38:50 AM
Is this article about the future prospects of the country or the so called failures of the ANC , i'm failing to make a distintcion here. If Helen Zille is such a perfect leader why are there so many protests in the Western Cape. I would rather vote for IFP instead of DA.

AJ 5/4/2009 9:38:56 AM
If teh ANC were voted in on policy I would agree with you. We know that is rubbish. I think you should stop smoking the stuff. The ANC will have plenty to draw inspiration from whether it be 16, 26 or just 6 percent. It is hard for parties to canvass and win based on policy alone.

Mandla Mahlangu 5/4/2009 9:39:36 AM
well AnC worked very well with IFP, when the province was in the hands of IFP, what will make them change

Mandla Mahlangu 5/4/2009 9:41:31 AM
thanks bro, but i always Keep the positive attitude up

Mandla Mahlangu 5/4/2009 9:42:12 AM
I dont know!

M 5/4/2009 9:42:47 AM
Gloat? Hmm. We are just happy that someone else gets a chance to induce change. You should be happy too. At least we know that poverty will be address efficiently and intelligently for a change and this benefits the poorest of the poor. Because every time I see poverty and then the very expensive cars of our Gauteng govt and their wealth, I feel like change is not getting a chance,AGAIN.

lips 5/4/2009 9:43:45 AM
If all South Africans are on a "equal playing field" why do we still have Affirmative Action and why do so many white South Africans emigrate????

M 5/4/2009 9:46:41 AM
Compared to the bleakness that remained since 94? The bleakness of poverty if you don't know someone in govt or don't have the money to bribe yourself upwards? The bleakness of seeing the wealthiest province have so much poverty? Do you actually live in SA?

oistar 5/4/2009 9:46:47 AM
As long as we have the imbecile Julias Malema dictating to the ANC, The Womans League and slamming Helen Zille etc. we do not have much to get excited about. One thing is also for certain, there are far too many ignorant (and racist) ANC members to get your hopes up about anything. It is a pity, the ANC polcies are quite good and sound, just a pity that its leaders and supporters are still so backward oistar

cedb00 5/4/2009 9:48:58 AM
Don't you find it cute that the ANC continues to depict the DA as a white racist party, but after the election results in the Western Cape came out, ANC supporters on this forum described how they going to flood the Western Cape with BLACK voters to restore power to the ANC. So....by their own definition, the ANC is therefore a racist party. Anyway, they cannot fight the DA on performance, so they have to play the race card.

Point Blank 5/4/2009 9:53:39 AM
We not gloating we are celebrating and we are proud of our achievements, if YOU want to call it gloatiing I can only think that there is a little bit of sour grapes on your side? Am I right?

JoeDirt 5/4/2009 9:55:50 AM
although it seems almost impossible that The DA Could take the gov in 2014(which it most likely is) it could happen over a longer time period lets give until say...2022 taking over province by province rallying at the right places to the majority, lets face it the 'majority' are lower class people mostly uneducated and ignorant as to who runs the country, only knowing that they should vote anc not really asking themselves why? People will sooner or later realize that the Anc just doesnt 'Cut It'.

PHILA 5/4/2009 9:56:11 AM
You're deceiving youself that the DA is the ONLY party that increased their market share in the past elections. The ANC just fell short of a 2/3 regardless of the Cope breakaway so imagine if that didn't happen. The prophets of doom including yourself had predicted the ANC would get below 60%.If moving up 3% from the previous elections makes the DA arrogant then you're in for a shock in 2014.In the past four elections the ANC got 62%,66%,69%,65% and they never rested on their laurels.

jen 5/4/2009 9:56:57 AM
didn't you recently tell us all to go live in the real world, that you were done commenting here?

Sinudeity 5/4/2009 9:57:18 AM
Come on John. How many white folks are in the ANC NEC/MP's?

MJM 5/4/2009 9:57:56 AM
People would not perceive the DA as a racist white party or doubt their existence if their campaigns were not conveying that message. I know for a fact that the majority of the white S.Afficans, just like many of us Africans, still awaits the arrival of a better and constructive opposition party than the clowns(incl DA) that we currently have. We need a strong opposition party that will not be based on hatred, emotions or unrealistic values.

EaziM 5/4/2009 10:13:32 AM
The majority of South Africans have spoken, be it black or white, that they want the ANC to continue governing this country. We are quick to call Zille a capable leader because she is white and because JZ is black we call him incompetent. This is utterly rubbish. Lets give both leaders (JZ and Zille) a chance to prove themselves before we cast judgement.

The Truth 5/4/2009 10:25:48 AM
Out of an eligible electorate of 30 million people, only 23 million of those are currently registered to vote, with only 17.6 million of those actually bothering to cast their ballots on 22 April. That leaves us with 12 million people who never voted but could have,a greater number than voted for the ANC. That leaves the ANC with a little more than a third of the actual voting public in this country. So where does this ANC ?juggernaut? story originate with telling statistics like that?

Darth 5/4/2009 10:27:07 AM
Very happy that the DA achieved their victory in WC. Has anybody been to CT?? it is the best city in SA by far. My WC my tax money!!!

Od 5/4/2009 10:27:37 AM
I want to first congratulate Hellen Zille and the DA. After reading the article, Im not sure who the "our" in the title referred to.

Karen 5/4/2009 10:28:06 AM
Your ANC is ruining Your Future. It is not the ANC it used to be thanks to Your leaders Vision of self-enrichment, which I doubt was your vision of your future - although perhaps it was, I can never tell with cult members. Have you seen the news? Zuma is removing Manuel from his post and replacing him with one of his cronies - all the better to get his grubby little hands on our money. He is still giving him a position in cabinet - if of course he accepts it, but his strength is finance. The fact that Manuel is ANC is the only reason many voted for the ANC. They wanted the Minister of Finance to remain constant in this time of Global recession and prevent International disinvestment in South Africa, but thats all gone now. Watch this cookie crumble...

jen 5/4/2009 10:30:52 AM
Why is malema sowing division, hatred, and mistrust with his latest outburst, and nobody in the ANC is stopping him? (good for helen for not responding)

Sebastien 5/4/2009 10:39:21 AM
I suspect for the majority that's not the case. Zille delivers what she promises, while the ANC does not. Lets say you have two hospitals, one is disgusting and the other is better and you choose the latter. The disgusting one happens to be run by Blacks, while the other run by Whites. Does that make you racist? No. Now what if the better one was run by Blacks, what then, still racism? It's not about color, it's a service delivery issue; nothing more. DA delivers, ANC does not. Simple.

Eles 5/4/2009 10:42:54 AM
We are prepared to give JZ a chance however HZ has already proven herself capable many times over - respect is earned not automatic. The ANC overall slack service delivery to date and gross incompetence and corruption speaks for itself.

Papa 5/4/2009 10:50:47 AM
DA supporters, tell us about the rumours doing the rounds; is it true that DA supporters from Free State were registered and bussed to WC to boost the party's vote in that province? Maybe it is just a rumour, but it emanated from some DA supporters in the Free State!

kamawa 5/4/2009 10:52:52 AM
To be optismistic about the future of SA under JZ i think this 5 yrs will be a good one from what i hv observed.JZ is clear abt what He wants n were the country must heed.Bt the sooner ppl stop bashing the government the beta.i dont believe HZ is the cure to all the problems in our country we need collective minds to take this country forward.

jeh 5/4/2009 10:57:09 AM
It looks as though JZ may be planning appointing the guy who runs SARS as finance minister. It may be a good thing - SARS is particularly well run. And Trevor Manuel, good as he has been, cannot stay in the job forever. Just hoping maybe it will work out. It will be interesting to see the response of overseas investors, and the effect on our currency

SimonP 5/4/2009 11:00:32 AM
You stated if the ANC did not get 2/3rds you would stop posting. FACT the ANC did not get 2/3rds yet you still post. Malema said Zille is a racist little girl, how strange you now call her a racist little girl. Get a life, think for yourself and then perhaps you will be listened to.

Papa 5/4/2009 11:04:47 AM
The apartheid government killed, imprisoned, tortured, forced into exile all those who fought against their system, how "smart" of Zille to have "avoided" all of the above while fighting against apartheid from within the borders! I am a proud ANC member who was not afraid to engage the NP on their terms, dialogue or even armed combat, but I also embraced peace when the time was right. Much as stupid DA supporters can call me "uneducated and ignorant", I know I am not! I know my history too!

samsam 5/4/2009 11:05:04 AM
I dont agree, I went through DA economic policy,I cant get over it,all I picked up is compromise of white males who feel disgruntled, DA is against BEE/Transformation/Land restitution policies, when the ANC took power their intention was clear,as the next step was economic emanicipation, which DA is against,Black people are not going to eat politics,we need money/cash,white males got their peace cake what now,ANC policies are mainly for whites females/black/col/indians/disabled.Whites males must not be tsotsies

Mandla Mahlangu 5/4/2009 11:06:25 AM
i dont remember myself saying such thing...by the way there is another Mandla here.

The Truth 5/4/2009 11:08:01 AM
You mean similiar to the way in which the ANC bus people in to rallies to make the crowds look substantial,or provide the poor with food parcels in return for their votes,or threatening to not pay their pensions if the elderly don't vote for them?

Wisdom 5/4/2009 11:11:49 AM
This is an uneducated rumour! They could bring busloads of voters from other provinces to the WC. If they were registered in another province eg Free state then they could only vote in the national election and NOT in the provinsial one. Pleasse educate yourself?

Wisdom 5/4/2009 11:14:05 AM
If Mandla stops posting, who will we laugh at then?

Wisdom 5/4/2009 11:20:47 AM
White males did not get anything...they worked for it. Instead of burning down schools they studied in them! I also know the history.

Od 5/4/2009 11:24:22 AM
You are joking right? do you honestly believe that people voted for ANC because of Trevor Manuel? and did you expect him to stay there forever? come on girl use your mind-my not supporting ANC doesnt blind me from seeing a spade as a spade!

Bus driver 5/4/2009 11:26:37 AM
One cannot vote for the party in a specific province if you do not live and are registered in that province. How will they have gotten there, the taxis and busses are on strike again and again and again... I got my respect for the taxi industry when they strategically announced another strike on voting day, they knew that Zuma will step in as many of the ANC voters are reliant on taxi's.

SimonP 5/4/2009 11:37:57 AM
