Blood on Africa's hands

by
2008-12-22 10:38

Tinus le Roux, News24 User

The Zimbabwean tragedy is like a slow motion drama, started a couple of years ago by Robert Mugabe trying to cling to power at the cost of his country, his people and the Southern African region.

With the almost total destruction of the once prestigious African country through the hardship, hunger and death of its people, now suddenly neighbouring countries admit there is a problem that should be solved?

Why have the African leaders take such a long time to eventually admit the obvious? Why did the African leaders not publicly oppose Mugabe although the violations of human rights were common knowledge?

What is difficult for me to understand is the ANC government's attitude on Mugabe the past years: The ANC came to power on the base of human rights principles such as democracy and anti-racism.

Everyone knew long ago that Mugabe's government grossly violates these issues e.g. land grabs, racism, forced resettlement of thousands of urbanised people, freedom of speech and press taken away, etc.

Why did the ANC government not publically condemn these violations although these were the exact issues they struggled for? Two faced?

I don't know the answers to these mysteries but the African leaders who supported Mugabe with his atrocities by means of silence are co-responsible for the tragedy of what is now happening to the people of Zimbabwe, their blood is on these leader's hands as well.

The African leaders knew what was happening, the press started with warnings half a decade ago, but they did nothing that made any difference!

And now the most bizarre of all, in Mugabe's desperate quest to stay in power he blamed the West in the most blatant way as the responsible party for the failure of Zimbabwe. Now, it is expected from the West again to help out to relieve the suffering of people.

How can you hit someone and the next moment asks him for help? Hopefully this sad episode of Zimbabwe has a clear lesson and message to African leaders: Don't do land grabs, stop living in the past, stop blaming the West for things that go wrong in your country, do not try to win votes and stay in power by any means? this will cause destruction!

They want to sort out theire own problems, so LET them. 'The West' should not impose evil things like democracy, financial stability, rule of law, human rights and all sorts of silly un-African things!

Houston 12/22/2008 10:48:09 AM
Mugabe wont listen to anyone - the country is on the brink of collapse, so let it collapse, then the rebuilding can begin. I'm tired of listening to the same old junk regarding Zim, the people of Zim voted this fool in, let them stand up and deal with him.

Ginger 12/22/2008 10:48:33 AM
There are too many politicians who pass the buck and look for somebody or something else to blame. It is about time they all took responsibilities for themselves, their actions and their countries.

SeanO 12/22/2008 10:59:22 AM
The wheels have to fall off and then the West must help. This is hypocracy at it's best. As for the other African leaders, hmmph - how many 100 thousand ordinary citizens must die before they will stand up against their anti colonial/apartheid buddies? Even our President, recent past and present, turns a blind eye to the self preservation tactics of a lunatic, while he slaughters or neglects his people. Let's hope our leaders have enough brains(?) to learn from this.

eduardo 12/22/2008 11:05:37 AM
I agree, the people voted him in, so they must now dispose of him. Who else can you blame but the electorate for keeping him in power?

Sinudeity@Gmail.com 12/22/2008 11:05:47 AM
Took 8 years for Africa to 'realise' something is wrong. Mugabe does NOT want to let go. Time to send in the military. And if South Africa is too buddy-buddy or COWARDLY to send in troops, then I will do it.

Andre-F 12/22/2008 11:07:34 AM
The only reason the ANC government does nothing to topple Mugabe is because he knows to many little dirty secrets about them. The ANC government and Zanu-PF are one evil click. They are all incompetent, power hungry idiots who don't care about anybody as long as they can cling on to power at any cost, even if that means destroying millions of lives. Come next years elections, the same will happen to S.A.

Lilly 12/22/2008 11:10:00 AM
Houston , I am with you, WHO CARES!! Leave them to their own devices, why do we even debate this issue? They are getting what they deserve. The Empirialist should not even glance their way. Let them destroy one another.

Edmund 12/22/2008 11:11:01 AM
If the foolish people of Zim voted for a fool - let them sort out their own crap. Neighbouring countries should close ALL borders with Zim and stop ALL aid. Bob wouldn't last a week. Why are African leaders allowing this fool to get away with what he has done? Are they scared of him? Why haven't they got any backbone to say enough is enough? What hold has he got on them?

Johan 12/22/2008 11:14:31 AM
Good point, but unfortunately the zims do not stand up against the murderer! They conveniently chooose to cross the border to have a whale of a time here in sa.I do feel sorry for them in a way,but THEY must stand up and be counted for.SA is almost like a nice holiday for them...

KAC 12/22/2008 11:19:34 AM
Very sad indeed. The last ploy of the African community is that they will not interfere, the reason is that if they stay out and force the west come to Africa aid, Mugabe will be hailed as a hero as he will shout from the highest towers that colonialism is occurring and that was what he was trying to block. As sad as it might be the west cannot interfere here. Africans have been shouting that they will sort it out, so let them. Never mind that they will inflict major pain and suffering, so far the black majority have proven that murder is acceptable if they can benefit out of it. The big question that should be asked is whether they are entitled to continue on the destruction path or should their entitlement be removed to save them from themselves.

Cape Town Kid 12/22/2008 11:22:12 AM
Zimbabweans as citizens must take ownership for their own FREEDOM. Why is it impossible for them to vote in a new dispensation. Now everyone is clamouring that AFRICAN countries be caretakers of ZIM?The fallacy in that arguments spells danger for ZIMBOS and SA. We do not have the capacity to deal with a "DARFUR" situation. Why are we hell bent on creating this situation for SOUTH AFRICA.Zims must do what our youth did if they are serious about themselves!

lloyd macklin 12/22/2008 11:22:16 AM
..at his congress and could not believe my ears when I heard the raptuous applause that followed. We are clearly missing something. Around 50% of his people voted for him and continue to support him. Surely, they cannot be that gullible! Then again, watch our local comrades jump to his defense. Think back a few weeks when we had Cape Town Kid and co raving about the african solution.

Rian 12/22/2008 11:24:30 AM
I read today that there are still business men in the UK funding Mugabe. The US has frozen their US based assets, but the UK has to still act against these individuals. The sooner Mugabe stops receiving foreign aid the sooner his regrime will collapse. If he can't pay the police, he can't rule. I can't wait for his funds to dry up and his people to hand him over the the Hague. The defeated look on his stupid face will be priceless.

Vims 12/22/2008 11:25:57 AM
Houston you are an idiot. The people did not vote for him. The elections were not free and fair. I think SA should learn from this. In Zim people used to make fun of Zambia back in the days when things were good. They didn't learn anything and now look at how they are suffereing. SA citizens must wake up and stop just complaing. We must VOTE and make a difference in our country and make sure that no single leader will have the opportunity to behave this way.

Nico Nel 12/22/2008 11:26:55 AM
In the democratic western world the rule is by the people for the people. In South Africa and the ANC (and all the poeople who voted them in)the rule is, by the corrupt for the corrupt, by the criminals for the criminals. The ruling party in South Africa don't have the brain capacity to see what is criminal, they cannot see that what Mugabe is doing is wrong. What he is doing is normal and in line with their policies.

Matete 12/22/2008 11:28:34 AM
Many say they must solve their own. Problem is their nonsense influence the region and RSA in so many ways. Therefore we HAVE a say and a responsibility. Even negotiating with them gives legitimacy where there should be none. How can a handfull of people be allowed to destruct the masses. Sick world. Comes from our own dictatorial past where you are chief by birth and the rest must follow.

alan 12/22/2008 11:30:59 AM
In the past, most of Africa's atrocities have been largely hidden through lack of poor communication. Our SA govt needs to realise that this is no longer the case here. The eyes of the world are on South Africa, through TV, radio, print and the Internet. Mugabe is a shocking example of a Black African leader. Especially with the World Cup coming up, our guys need to know their every move in SA will be examined. Great! We cannot afford to be another Zim.

Matete 12/22/2008 11:31:52 AM
The money lost in the markets and spent to assist Zim people and the crime they bring to our country cou\ld have built a lot of houses for our own. Their problem becomes our problem. We can not be silent.

Skew 12/22/2008 11:32:33 AM
I agree that the leaders of Africa have taken too long to react in order to keep their popularity. The West is Africa's 'bad-guy' yet on hand with aid when needed. What will happen when the West needs to put that aid money into helping it's own tax-paying people out? These 'leaders' will probably blame colonialism and demand financial aid...

Dennis 12/22/2008 11:41:08 AM
I think that the SA government is just incompetent agravated by infighting and paralysis , I just can't see how anybody in their right mind can vote for more of the same from the governing party , black or white Cope party is very much from the same mould

Shimane Mbuyisa 12/22/2008 11:41:48 AM
How many of them have either ran away from Zimbabwe or simply turned the other cheeck? Powerful countries such as Britain, America, France, Australia have conducted "loud" diplomacy, which has included travel bans and other sanctions. African countries have conducted "quiet diplomacy". Both the West and Africa's ways have not produced any results. It is therefore foolhardy to think anyone else but the people of Zim can remove that tinpot dictator - by fighting back and stopping their cowardice.

Sebastien 12/22/2008 11:47:53 AM
Zimbabwe voted him in, but as far as I can recall, they also voted him out and we all know how that turned out. They can't stand up and deal with him. He has the entire Zimbabwean military in his palm; while the rest of the country's people are poor, starving and dying from cholera. All the while, Africa is doing bugger all for their African-brothers, as usual. Quite pathetic and cowardly in my opinion.

Tom 12/22/2008 11:51:14 AM
I don't understand. For stealing something you will end up in jail, but for allowing your country to go to ruins, and allowing your citizens that voted you into power, go hungry and die of diseasses goes unpunished. Do goverments have a different set of laws that applies to them? One man is negatively affecting a whole region and also the whole continent and many african leaders allow, tolerate and accept this. How stupid can the people of africa be to tolerate these kind of leaders.

GeePmb 12/22/2008 11:53:00 AM
.. why so many zimbabweans still actuall vote for Mugabe? I realise that there is much intimidation but surely no-one can be that blind to the goings on of the ruling party or are the ZanuPf voters scared that if the MDC comes to power that they will be targeted, abducted and eliminated in the manner that the Mugabe regime has done to it's opposition supporters? It beggars belief that blind loyalty (and rigged elections) are keeping Mugabe in power.

Point Blank 12/22/2008 12:09:03 PM
Alot of these so called African leaders have too much dirty laundry, they have enjoyed the reign and have benefitted enormously off the aid that has been given to their countries, they sitting plush with mansions and limo's and villa's in France and Spain, why would they try and do anything for their people?

Herman 12/22/2008 12:09:12 PM
Good article, but i also now agree let the people of Zimbabwe sort this lunatic out. It is indeed beyond comprehension why our so called democratic goverment has not seen fit to condem Mugabe. The best thing that can happen is for the ANC to dissapear as they have lost the plot as far as democracy is concerned.

Point Blank 12/22/2008 12:10:42 PM
The 1st comment Juan, you refer to "they" so in essence you don't regard yourself as an African, on contray you also dont regard yourself as "The West" so what are you and where do you belong?I believe you are a negative person in general, I'm sure I'm not the 1st nor the last to say this about u. I read ur comments onthis column.

Uncle UBA 12/22/2008 12:12:46 PM
Zimbabwe was once such a ''mature nation'' that it did not seserve to be ''crushed'' the way they have done!.What surprises me is that SA is ''not willing'' to see change in Zimbabwe and at the same time ''unwilling and unable'' to help Zim refugees. So why are they pretending?, after all its costing SA a lot they way they are approaching the Zimbabwean problem. This merely shows how ''naive'' and ''dumb''Africans are.IT IS QUICK & EASY FOR US TO DESTROY THAN TO BUILD !

D.S 12/22/2008 12:12:56 PM
The only way to sort out the problem in Zim is now for military intervention, this will happen after the new year starts when South Africa no longer has any seat on the UN security Council. People are sick and tired of this person. You cannot leave it up to South Africa as it is now pay back time for the so called "Stuggle" that took place. BEWARE it is also coming here, and a lot quicker than Zimbabwe i might add.

Parachute what what 12/22/2008 12:15:14 PM
Mugabe is one of Africa's greatest leaders, but because of Western Parachute Journalism he is seen by many as a monster. The fact is once you differ with the west, you and country will feel the pinch. Colonialism is still alive in Africa. Look on HIV/Aids related stories. U will c blacks lying helplessly on hospital beds, while a white person is explaining more about the disease. people dis disease is wiping people of all race, but it done as if is it wiping us only.

Jim Bean 12/22/2008 12:18:27 PM
Fair comment. And I hope the message get through to someone. Trouble is, history has prooved that clinging to power is the "African Way". How are we to protect our own people from this in our future "democracy" ?

Martin Radebe 12/22/2008 12:23:50 PM
Did UN stop USA/Britain from killing innocent sivilliance in Afganistan and Irac? No! even if they new that was a mess they kept quite, people of Zim must vote Mugabe out not us or other countries in the South. Yet again we don't don't want Mugabe taking his land through lies but are happy COPE are getting what they want through lies. Leave Zim alone, let them sort out their probs not us.

Rian 12/22/2008 12:29:47 PM
Please stick to the topic.

Ginger 12/22/2008 12:34:20 PM
I see that although our own can starve - we give 300 million to farming in Zimbabwe - in otherwords give Bob some more money to spend on himself cos he won't give it to the farmers.

Frank 12/22/2008 12:38:48 PM
Has it occurred to anybody that RSA CANNOT provide a military solution to the Mugabe problem? The Zimbabwe army would easily crush the pathetic, AIDS-ridden SANDF, which can hardly raise a battalion for peace-keeping efforts in Burundi, let alone fight a well-equipped Zimbabwe army.

Wisdom 12/22/2008 12:38:51 PM
Please climb back into your world. How can we leave Zim, to Zim people? They are crossing the borders by the thousands, many into our country. Martin Mugabe...

Sebastien 12/22/2008 12:42:18 PM
@Martin: I agree with you to some extent that other countries must mind their own business, however, it's an entirely different matter when a country is being run by a pathological egotist on a power-spree. Mugabe is willing to let the country collapse, and his people die, just so he can retain whatever vestige of power he believes he has. @Parachute what what: Collapsing economy, starvation, poverty, disease; these are all the marks of a great African leader? Keep your inane drivel to urself.

Andre - F 12/22/2008 12:44:56 PM
If Mugabe is one of Africa's greatest leaders then you are a idiot! Are you sure you are not related to Mugabe? How can you blame Aids/HIV on the West? You must be a retard!

paul 12/22/2008 12:52:44 PM
If/when Mugabe goes to the Hague to stand trial for Crimes against humanity, I believe Mbeki, and all many other top brass ANC officials needs to be tried as well, for the so called quite diplomacy approach, which was tantamount to accessory to the fact.

Alfred 12/22/2008 12:56:24 PM
So the West is always right? They enslaved, they brutally colonised, they brutally discriminated, segregated & marginalised based on colour. Africans had to fight for their rights, they were not given on a plate. Beyond the screaming headlines from western oriented papers African leaders know more of what is at play than armchair columnists. The US has been claiming its sanctions were targeted until yesterday when Frazer confirmed what Africans have always known. Sanctions have killed Zimbabweans

Francois Roux 12/22/2008 1:03:29 PM
wasn't posted, because I think they thought I was being to harsh. 5 minutes later I read that the gave $300million to ZIm, and I know I was right. Our so called leaders won;t have to answer about doing the same thing if they don;t stop Mugabe now...

Andre-F 12/22/2008 1:13:29 PM
So, the ever corrupt ANC government just gave R300 Million of our hard earning tax money to comrade Bob. That money will surely not go for farming. Maybe now Mugabe can buy more weapons from China.... Well done! Viva ANC, Viva Zanu-PF!

Ginger 12/22/2008 1:22:05 PM
Stop smoking your socks and come back to planet Earth.

SimonP 12/22/2008 1:26:48 PM
It seems some posters here actually believe the voting figures. Mugabe has rigged several elections and will continue to do so as long as he can get away with it.

Duzi 12/22/2008 1:34:41 PM
Buddy, what bubble boy world are you living in? I won't insult you because you must either have some medical condition or you have quite litterally been brain washed! Are you really trying to redirect the blame away from Mugabe? What good has he done for Zim? Have you actually listened to the stuff that comes out him?

Peter 12/22/2008 1:35:29 PM
Was the ANC not formed to uplift the life off everyday people? Did Zim not helped the ANC in the past? Why does the ANC allow their neighbour to destroy the lives of millions of Zimbabweans? Sies ANC. You are cowards just because Mugape knows to much about your own stealing from your people. But the wheel will turn. There is a Bigger Hand that does not sleep.

Jonas 12/22/2008 1:50:31 PM
It seems as if the editor of this blog does not believe that there should be a warning for South Africa from what is happening in Zimbabwe. Allow the ANC to rule for another 14 years and you will probably not have a blog to edit! Mad Bob has been in charge for 28 years now, watch this space!

Ginger 12/22/2008 2:00:18 PM
The rest of Africa mostly has chlorea and AIDS. Who has the strength to stand up to a well trained army fully stocked with top of the range chinese weapons. First one standing will be tortured and added to the already full killing fields. Where are the 42 MDC members? Bet they are dead.

Tarras Bulba@ Halfwise says... But .. he IS writing it against the "injustice government" :) ... Anyway, I know what you mean ... remember, that people did write things like this ... and they were either threatened or .. mysteriously silenced. . .

It won't be long before there is a repeat of this process. First, all the intellectuals (that includes me, unfortunately) would be purged, so that minds like yourself are the only remainder. They want pawns (prawns?), not citizens. And Juju's told you that you shouldn't listen to my advice. . .so I'll just ask you: Why listen to him? WHAT exactly does Juju do for R4 mil/year?
