Nintendo's Wii coming to SA

2007-09-05 09:48

Ilse Arendse

Cape Town - Nintendo's popular Wii gaming console, which was launched overseas in November 2006, is finally making its way to South Africa.

A local company named Core Group has been confirmed as the new South African distributor for Nintendo products after months of uncertainty.

Nintendo products were formerly distributed in South Africa by Futronics, a division of Panasonic, but the company did not renew its dealership rights earlier this year.

With no Nintendo dealer in South Africa, the only way gamers could get their hands on Nintendo products was through costly importing.

A Core Group spokesperson told News24 that details are still sketchy and a price for the Wii has not been confirmed, but they're hoping for an early October launch.

Since its launch in November 2006, the Wii has consistently trumped the competition, outselling Sony's PS3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360.

In June this year, Sony announced a price cut in North America and Japan for the PS3 and in August Microsoft also cut the price of its Xbox 360 in an effort to expand its audience.

In South Africa, the 60-gigabyte version of the PS3 costs about R6 600 and Xbox 360 prices range from R2 699 for the Core, R3 699 for the Pro and R4 599 for the Elite.

The Wii costs $249.99 (about R1 800) in the United States, but word is the console will sell for around R2 700/R2 800 here.

The Wii, with its Wiimote - a motion-sensitive remote control wand that can be used as a sword, tennis racket or fishing rod - is reportedly a hit among children, women and older players, not just hardcore gamers.

According to an AP report, Nintendo has sold 3.43 million Wii machines worldwide in the April-June quarter, and expects to sell a total of 16.5 million Wii units in the financial year ending in March 2008.

How can our local retailers justify the R6600 PS3 price tag when it retails in the US for $499? [http://www.bizrate.com/playstationconsoles/products__keyword--sony+playstation+3__sort--5.html] i can understand profit margins, but at almost double the price (using today's $1=R7.26)?!? This is ridiculous! Are our import taxes that high? I refuse to purchase these items locally; even the PS3 games are 4 times cheaper on ebay!

manicm 9/5/2007 10:53:30 AM
if it comes in under R2800, otherwise will not too expensive.

I have been waiting for months to get the Wii, I really think its the best console in the world. Such a shame Core got it, they have messed up Apple in SA and I strongly suspect they will do the same to Nintendo. Hopefully Nintendo pulls the plug on them.

Stephen 9/5/2007 11:15:48 AM
They are on the way to mess up the Wii. The price is going to be around R2800 - R2900 go look at btgames dot co dot za

Ive had my Wii for 1 month now, (got it from Australia for about R2200), and its an unbelievable console! Extremly interactive & everybody thats come to my place loves it! Cant wait for the local release! Ive been importing games (at about R450), but i suspect the prices will be the same anyway. WII IS GONNA KICK THE PS3'S BUTT!

King 9/5/2007 11:21:00 AM
It's silly too pay R6600 for a PS3. You can easily find them for much cheaper, say R5500, if you look around. I'm talking about new ones as well. I might look into a Wii, if the price is right, but more importantly if the games are commonly available. Even though I'm not one of those nostalgic people who wants to play Flapjack Mario Tricycle Racer 20344. I'd probably still import the console, it WILL be more expensive locally.

I have had a Wii since its release in the US.. I paid throuhg my nose but it has been worht it... I ordered Metroid Prime 3 the other day and am hoping it arrives soon... IMO the Wii is an awesome machine...I am a Nintendo Fanboy and have ALL the other consoles. I will however say, and saying this takes a lot, the Wii makes a good secondary machnie.. and I am in the market for a 360. FCUK SONY PS TRIPPLE

CJ 9/5/2007 11:50:18 AM
Will be available at rAge, is available for pre-order now. I guess pricing may change, because it was originally listed at R2799, but is now R2899. Games are far too expensive. Thing is, then they'll say there's no SA market - because there's been no marketing, and it's overpriced.

R2800... What a joke. We consumers are being taken for a ride. This is supposedly a console that is making the manufacturer money and not being sold at a loss like PS3 and XBox.

Angry Fanboy 9/5/2007 1:50:33 PM
Im sorry but all evidence led to the fact that Wii will release at rAge, but what is this stuff about a early October release?! I need it NOW!!!!

M Swart 9/5/2007 1:54:30 PM
I will never pay R 2800 for a console with only 480p graphics, come on that is just ridiculous. R 1500 maybe. I'd rather buy the Core 360 and have 720p graphics.

Currently living in the UK, must really say the Wii is popular here, places like game, HMV can't keep up with stock. Myself got a PS3 (due to blue-ray) but think my daughter which is 2 would love a Wii, I hope the price won't be to high back home, (UK £179 inc sport pack)
