Connect with dead on Facebook

Cape Town - Facebook has upset a great number of users with a new "reconnect" feature by recommending they get in touch with dead friends.

The popular social network introduced a number of new features over the weekend, including the now controversial "reconnect" feature which aims to reunite friends that have not communicated for a while.

While the original aim may have been noble and well intended, Facebook unfortunately fell victim to the "insensitivity of the algorithm", as Mashable blogger Peter Cashmore comments.

Within hours Twitter was abuzz with tweets from distressed Facebookers:

"Facebook just told me to reconnect with a friend of mine who died a couple years ago. Not cool, Facebook," tweets JLynnJohnston.

"One of my friends on Facebook has passed. FB keeps asking me to reconnect with her... FB will never be smart enough...," writes twittleotwitt.

"Facebook just suggested that I "reconnect" with someone who passed away 2 years ago. That's so messed up," an upset Ubabz adds.

Facebook also suggested users reconnect with ex-lovers ("Facebook told me to reconnect with my ex-girlfriend. I don't think that's a good idea," says bruthamyles), current partners and even with themselves:

"Facebook keeps telling me to reconnect with myself. WTF?! " PenultimateWord tweets.

More than 950 000 users have reacted against the changes by joining a Facebook group called "Change Facebook Back To Normal".

Facebooker Julee Athey summarised the sentiments of many frustrated users with her post: "It was just fine how it was! If it aint broke, don't fix it!!!!! Doesn't seem like anyone cares for it this way!!!"

Melissa Winand, on the other hand, kept her opinion short and sweet: "new facebook sucks!!!"

At least not all was bad, as some Facebookers also managed to find some humour in Facebook's unfortunate glitch, as Jo_MacD shared on Twitter:

"Last night Facebook told me to reconnect with my husband, who was sitting opposite me. With the other laptop. They had a point..."

I wonder how that Ubabz knob thinks an application should "know" when friends have passed anyway? His tone suggest FB does it deliberately as some sort of cruel joke. Maybe they should just delete his account and spare him the pain of unstoppable progress?

I was wondering what this "reconnection" is all about as I kept on seeing it popping up on my home page, they forced the new FB on us now they want us to reconnect with people that are no longer even using FB. I just use FB for some of the games

Ha ha...the joys of technology. I must admit, I haven't even noticed the changes. But, then again, I'm on Facebook so infrequently, maybe facebook has given up on me long ago already :-)

I can understand some people being a little "confuzzled" by the reconnect function, specially when its to reconnect with those who have passed away, but at the end of the day, Facebook is just a piece of software, Facebook doesnt magically know when someone has passed away... If they're going to change the way the Reconnect feature works, simply add a function to "Dont remind me again" or something similair...

What else can people complain about, for heavens sake. Remove your dead friends from your friends list if it bothers you. Good grief, you put it there to begin with.

Tacita 10/26/2009 3:47:06 PM
How cruel and insensitive! And next thing you know, FB might expect us to think for ourselves too.

varo 10/26/2009 3:50:15 PM
these people realy dont know the real world south africans think its hard come to drc and these americans dont even know the meaning of reality they geting everything 2 eazy to complain about this bull++-+- seriously

Incredible 10/26/2009 4:00:13 PM
I like it Tarras... they should just delete the acounts of all those who complain... then tell them to 'reconnect' somewhere else :)

I like the new facebook reconnect feature. When you have over 500 friends, it is difficult to keep in contact with them all. Since saturday, I have messaged a few "old and forgotten" friends.

This is quite an interesting bit. HOW can people protest these things when facebook is FREE. It's not a democracy, neither is it a dictatorship as facebook is OPTIONAL. Interesting political arena this..

... stories like this put me in danger of rolling my eyes right out of my head.

*rolls them again*

Oh but if John Edwards reconnects you with your dead friends or lovers its fine, but the minute FB tries this out everyone has a problem. I bet John Edward was one the people who had something to say, since this would have meant some serious competition for him.

Francois Botha 10/26/2009 4:59:57 PM
AFAIK, deceased people's profile pages on Facebook can be put into an "in memoriam" state. If their families had done this, this issue probably wouldn't have popped up.

Amused at ignorant people 10/26/2009 5:00:19 PM
....and I suppose all you folks who complain about this expect Facebook to gain the ability to "sniff" out which of its users have passed away? Get real... It will only tell you to reconnect with people who are still on your friends list...It YOU who needs to clean up.

george 10/26/2009 5:26:35 PM
it's a free application... why do these people all think they have the right to complain...

George 10/26/2009 5:28:27 PM
HELLO????
Keep your friends list updated for goodness sake. how the heck is a software aplication supposed to intuitively know that your 'friend' doesn't exist if the user is still flagged as being a 'friend'. Some fb users are so lame (read: lazy)

Ex-Facebooker 10/26/2009 7:39:44 PM
Luckily I recently de-activated my Facebook account! Now I have a lot more time than checking on peoples updates. I mean do you need to update your status every minute of the day???

Michele 11/22/2009 2:36:46 PM
If somebody passes on, surely you would remove them from FB as a friend. How is anybody supposed to know they passed away if they still sitting there? FB is telling you to reconnect with somebody that you have not spoken to for a while, noble gesture, as sometimes you forget to talk to people as individuals and not as a web picture Get a life, how is FB to know people are dead, or is your ex????
