Are you a Metrotextual?

2009-11-04 11:21

kalahari.net

London - Men have become so openly affectionate with each other using mobile technology they've taken to signing off text messages to male friends with a kiss (x), giving rise to a new generation dubbed "Metrotextuals".

New research from mobile phone firm T-Mobile reveals nearly a quarter of men (22%) regularly include a kiss on texts to their male mates, T-Mobile said in an e-mailed statement.

"Metrotextuality" is most widespread among 18-24 year old males with three quarters (75%) regularly sealing texts with a kiss and 48% admitting that the practice has become commonplace amongst their group of friends.

Nearly a quarter of this age group (23%) even appreciate an "x" in a text exchange from people that aren't close friends.

But it's not just younger men that have become Metrotextuals - one in 10 men over 55 often completes a text to another male with a kiss, according to the poll.

'Sharing the love in a big way'

The research also revealed there's a certain etiquette within metrotextuality. A lower case "x' is the preferred sign-off for most (52%) compared to 17% for a bolder upper case X), with one in three sharing the love in a big way with multiple lower case kisses (xxx).

Clinical psychologist, Ron Bracey, said that men have traditionally been reluctant to share their emotions with friends and tended to keep their feelings bottled up.

"However, the advent of mobile phones and social media means more communication is done non-verbally, and through this it seems men can more easily share their feelings with others - especially their male friends," Bracey said in the statement.

Confirmed Metrotextual Nick Kirkham, aged 25, who works in insurance, said he and his friends have been sending kisses to each other for years.

"In fact, apart from my boss or a work client, there's no one I wouldn't send a kiss on text to," he said.

No man. This is not metrosexual it's citygays. Where in your life have you seen such behaviour amoung men? Do they also kiss when they meet face to face fondling one another's "skottelgoed"? I don't agree with this article.

Raathez 11/4/2009 12:01:24 PM

Let's not confuse metrosexuality with homosexuality here. There is nothing wrong with being gay but texting kisses to other guys is just a gay practice...

TracerZA 11/4/2009 12:33:19 PM
this planet is becoming quite sad really......

i do it all the time 11/4/2009 12:37:47 PM

100% for an absolute waste of time...

There is no "new generation" of "metrotextual" that has been "given rise" to. It is utterly meaningless. Wouldn't it be amazing if people had more to do than make up stupid words to explain conditions and habits that matter roughly as much as eating garlic to avoid AIDS?

Does being what some simple-minded village idiot with too much time on his hands dubbed "being metrotextual" make any difference to anyone whatsoever? Are you ever going to introduce yourself as Bob, and I'm a metrotextual? I thought not.

Stop attempting to disguise your time-wasting as "progress" when you get caught. Changing the name of something is not progress, it's mostly a waste of resources. Naming something that does not need a name, thumb-sucking some menial piece of brain-offal so you can name it and be patted on the back for this "breakthrough" by someone else with the collective intelligence of spinach, is absolutely worthless to society. Do everyone a favor, keep your pointless brain-excrement to yourself and go clean the streets. That's a good boy.

I end most of my text messages to friends with "bye" or "f*** you". What does that make me? Wait, there's a sentence for it. I am... someone who said goodbye. Big. friggin. whoop.

Aryan 11/4/2009 12:56:20 PM
There is nothing Metro about it. In Alberton we call it gay!

jan 11/4/2009 1:02:05 PM
Please use a dictionary for your definitions of metrosexual in future :(

Rajez 11/4/2009 1:09:01 PM

Colin. 11/4/2009 1:10:21 PM
Oh no, I cannot believe I have just read this, sickening!

Huh? 11/4/2009 1:15:23 PM
This must be a joke, right? REAL men don't do this, or at least non that I know. Any bloke sending me a text kiss is going to get one right in the kisser next time I see him.

Gary 11/4/2009 1:18:30 PM
Whatever,
I like the way we have our text messages scanned and read, must have some air tight privacy policies in these contracts

OceanRush 11/4/2009 1:27:51 PM
Damn man - there is no way! My buddies are exactly that. I drink beer with them & stare at woman's breasts! I guess if you are a homo you send kisses to your buddies?? Dunno

wehries 11/4/2009 1:29:46 PM
Adding a "x" after a message means nothing more than a kiss, and sending that to another man is GAY. Period!

@Francois 11/4/2009 2:21:00 PM

I'm close with my guy friends, but putting a kiss at the end of a message, is pushing it a bit. I'll stick to putting kisses to my femle friends only.

Paul 11/4/2009 2:40:11 PM
I love it when my male friends kiss me, in text or real life. Yummy. Get over yourselves, homophobe losers.

Paul 11/4/2009 2:50:17 PM
Pfffft....now that's a bummer, i didn't know tha the x means a kiss......and i've been using x at random. I thought it merely meant signing off....oops.

patricia manganye 11/4/2009 2:54:10 PM
it is sick,really

ruach 11/4/2009 3:30:10 PM
it is becoming evident that the new man is slowly , but boldly, making an appearance onto the public scene...but are they not treading too closely to the gay border-line...only time will tell.

tshidi 11/4/2009 3:31:34 PM
