Free trees for young Europeans

Brussels - The European Commission says it will give 5 000 young Europeans trees to plant ahead of global climate change talks in Copenhagen later this year.
It says anyone aged between 15 to 29 in the 10 EU states taking part can log on to a website, ask for a free sapling of a pink-fruit bearing spindle tree and plant it.
It wants people to take pictures of their tree and add them to a Europe-wide map on the site.
The EU said on Monday that planting trees can help combat climate change because they absorb carbon dioxide, the key heat-trapping gas that is triggering global warming.
The programme runs in Bulgaria, Britain, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, France, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Sweden.
