Study on human DNA in animals

2009-11-10 11:00

London - British scientists begin a new study on Tuesday to consider how human DNA is used in animal experiments and to determine what the boundaries of such controversial science might be.

Though experts have been swapping human and animal DNA for years - like replacing animal genes with human genes or growing human organs in animals - scientists at the Academy of Medical Sciences want to make sure the public is aware of what is happening in laboratories before proceeding further.

"It sounds yucky, but it may be well worth doing if it's going to lead to a cure for something horrible," said Robin Lovell-Badge, a stem cell expert at Britain's National Institute for Medical Research, and a member of the group conducting the study.

At a media briefing in London, Lovell-Badge said there were two main types of experiments: altering an animal's genes by adding human DNA or replacing a specific animal sequence with its human counterpart.

Growing a human ear

Several years ago, human genes were added to a mouse to create a model of Down's syndrome for scientists to study how the disease evolves, which could lead to potential treatments.

Scientists also have tried to grow human organs in animals that could one day be transplanted back into humans - like a mouse onto whose back scientists grew a human ear. "There are good reasons for doing this, but it may upset some people," Lovell-Badge said.

Two years ago, controversy erupted in Britain after scientists announced plans to create human embryos using empty cow and rabbit eggs.

Critics condemned the mixing of human and animal genetic material, though scientists said the embryos would be destroyed after 14 days and would only be used to help them learn how to create human stem cells.

Scientists said they are now trying to determine where the line should be drawn on experiments that use human material in animals. At the moment, the regulation on how much human DNA can be put into an animal is vague.

Science 'going too fast'

"We are trying to work out what is reasonable," said Martin Bobrow, chairperson of the group conducting the study. He and others said they recognised people might be nervous about experiments where animals were given human features or brain cells.

David King, director of Human Genetics Alert, an independent watchdog, said he was not convinced such experiments were warranted. "This is a classic example of science going too fast," he said. "If you cannot firmly say exactly what it is you're creating, you should not do it."

Its horrible what they do to these animals. If people knew what go's on in thes labratories theyd cry. STOP Animal experiments.

Koch 11/10/2009 12:10:37 PM
I agree with Laranara: Stop abusing animals. Although animals possess no soul, they are still living creatures. They were created by God and us humans received an order from God: Manage creation, not destroy creation.

@laranara 11/10/2009 12:14:07 PM
Stop whining.

These experiments have been going on for decades. They have resulted in, and are promising even more, cures and treatments for real world diseases.

No one is torturing kittens to make you sad.

I say go for it :)

Carmy 11/10/2009 12:58:07 PM
I think it is fine, I dont like the idea but in an ideal world we would not eat meat, nor would we get cancer, I think as long as it is controlled and the animals are not suffering, find us those cures!

sanjay 11/10/2009 1:50:58 PM
animals do have souls MR Koch, if you hurt they do feel pain like humans

yf 11/10/2009 1:55:28 PM
if it weren't for animal experiments we wouldn't have vaccines for polio or leprosy or other diseases. Diabetics wouldn't have treatment and they would die. We also wouldn't have organ transplants or blood transfusions and many of the antibiotic treatments we have today wouldn't exist.

@Laranara 11/10/2009 2:02:41 PM
Have you ever lost a parent or loved one to cancer? Like Carmy says, as long as the animals are not suffering, the scientists should keep looking for cures.

Wisdom 11/10/2009 2:31:13 PM
Animals don't have a soul. You don't need a soul to feel pain. You need a soul to connect with GOD

Philosopher 11/10/2009 2:31:27 PM
Only religious people will have a problem with this. Religion have clashed with science and prevented progress too long now. I say go for it but of course regulate it to prevent mad scientist outcomes.

Scientist 11/10/2009 2:42:04 PM
@ laradrama and Koch: don't be pathetic. "animals possess no soul..."? Guess what? Nor do humans - or any other life form; it's simply biochemical reactions. I am personally involved in this field of work with the ultimate goal of CURING CANCER! I am by no means cruel; I would prefer if animals weren't ever used for tests (rather use criminals like the Jeppestown massacre accused) but animals do give more representative results than tissue culture (which I suppose you're also opposed to). If you're so worried about a rabbit being used for medical research, why aren't you fighting for the bacteria which scientists genetically modified by cloning the human insulin gene into in order to produce human insulin for diabetics - oh and at the same time, why don't you fight the diabetics using the product then as well? I hope you realize that people with your view are only delaying the inevitable.

Nathan 11/10/2009 3:10:04 PM
Oh, please! Without this research none of the uncounted advances for treating any number of the diseases that afflict you and your loved ones would have been developed. Unless you have a degree in a relevant science, quieten down and study up.

Are comments actually going through?

Better in a controlled enviroment than trying it out on humans like they did back in world war 2.

And wait till your mom/dad/sister/brother or you is on your death bed. Then you'll appriciate what "experiments" have gone into the animals.

Sick of Religious Propoganda 11/10/2009 4:13:07 PM
If it's not racism, it's religion... anyone who can look at a cow tending to her calf and crying out with worry when they are separated, or anyone who has seen and smelt the fear of animals about to be slaughtered, can see that animals have souls.

I trust that every single "religious" lemming will find this out the hard way, one day in life...

Kevin 11/10/2009 6:10:12 PM
People find anything to cry about, don't they? Yes, seeing an animal die is heart-wrenching, but for f*ck's sake, would you rather a human get experimented on? Of course, there are loads of humans that deserve life less than any animal (probably everyone here, even), but seriously, it's not like people are killing critters for sheer enjoyment.

Fred 11/10/2009 6:15:17 PM
Without animal testing you wouldn't have the medical drugs that cure your mother, grandmother, father, neighbour, brother, friend, or otherwise, of sickness. So please don't delude yourselves. Do you know how much animals suffer before they get to your plate?

nogod 11/11/2009 10:33:02 AM
Science should do what is best for humanity. ethics are important but as soon as religion is mentioned i just have to laugh. the mixing of human and animal DNA is just a perception. We are all animals. Without souls. get used to it. when you die, you die, just like any other animal and feed the worms. the question is, do you want to put off feeding the worms for longer or not? if yes, condone the scientists, if not.....
