Free internet access in CT

2007-11-14 14:01

Cape Town - Capetonians who do not own computers or who cannot afford internet café fees can now access both, free of charge, through the City of Cape Town's expanded Smart Cape Access Project, government news agency, BuaNews reports.

A public access point was opened on Wednesday in the foyer of the 44 Wale Street building.

Five computers have been installed which can be used by anyone for up to forty-five minutes per day.

The computers can be used to surf the internet, and every user gets a free e-mail account.

"Since we launched the Smart Cape Access Project in 2002, over one hundred thousand people have made use of the computers installed in Cape Town's public libraries," said Nirvesh Sooful, the City's Chief Information Officer.

This, he said, was the first move to expand computer access to other public buildings, so that more people could gain experience of computer use.

"We hope that workers and residents in Cape Town's CBD will find this new facility useful."

The city's e-governance strategy is built around three activities namely, giving people access to computers, helping them develop the skills to use them, and providing online information that is useful and relevant to local people.

"Our Library Access Points and Digital Business Centres are still only reaching a small proportion of the residents of our city.

"If people are to get computer experience, which is a vital skill for employment in the modern economy, then we need to build more facilities like this one," said Sooful.

The computers highlight websites that feature local businesses and communities.

The 44 Wale Street building, in the heart of the CBD, opposite the Provincial Government buildings on the corner of Long Street, housed the offices of the former Cape Metropolitan Council.

The building is now used by departments of the city administration. The foyer area has been converted into a large public space with information and displays covering a range of city services, as well as the Smart Cape computers.

The Access Point will operate from Monday to Friday from 09:00 through to 16:00. - BuaNews

I wonder where the money comes from? Why not visit an internet cafe? Or do people actually want everything for free? OH .. its not for free, the tax payer will once again foot this bill. REDICULOUS.

pete 11/14/2007 2:30:39 PM
This is great! The internet should be free to everyone. The next step for the City of Cape Town and other big cities must be the provision of wireless access.

vanessa 11/14/2007 2:33:59 PM
is it such a big deal to give ppl access to the internet? you know priviledged invididuals like you (and me) get up my bloody nose!

Cat 11/14/2007 2:43:47 PM
Get with the programme people! Internet has been free in the UK for years now. In phone booths on the street, in libraries and also at the airports. Not always the fastets way to check anything and hardly anyone uses it anymore but if you're stuck on a street corner and your Blackberry's battery is flat popping into the nearest phone booth to look at a map on multimap is so convenient.

Joe 11/14/2007 2:46:40 PM
The internet should be free/a LOT cheaper for everyone in SA! I just hope the internet cafe machines are well protected against password stealing trojans etc etc. Could be a nice haven for cyber criminals to snoop around.

Baby, everything OK? You're a sad, selfish and bitter individual. I love to know what your psychological makeup is like. I mean what's shaped your thinking so radically that you assess a perfectly warm act of kindness so negatively.

Mna 11/14/2007 2:56:18 PM
Baby, I'm also a tax payer, thousands and thousands of randa per annum, but what's the fuss. Let the ppl get access to INFORMATION. That's the least rich ppl like you(and me) can do. Pls go get some life.

pumpkin 11/14/2007 3:02:12 PM
I think "local only" surfing should be free.

siphos 11/14/2007 3:04:50 PM
baby better look at the bigger picture,If it is free then the spinoffs is that people will use it and later see the need to have their own computers, which means a benefit to computer/internet companies. It will put a very small dent the skills shortages.....it will also send a signal to the telkoms of this world about their ridiulous expemsiove and snail paced networks.....catch my drift?

MadDoG 11/14/2007 3:11:41 PM
I think that this is a brilliant idea. The fact that someone has got this off the ground and working is great for the less fortunate and for those of us that don't or cannot 'abuse' the facilities at work. Can you imagine dealing with fewer people (and hopefully very soon, no one)that is computer illiterate? i'm all for it and i hope that more people can have access to such access points. i'm even willing to donate to this cause and it's growth into more cities and towns.

james 11/14/2007 3:31:20 PM
Hey Baby, I agree with you why should we have to sponsor other peoples internet access, it is not a necessity, money should be spent on other things!!

Leonidas 11/14/2007 3:36:09 PM
Baby, you are so right. Why must hard-working, tax-paying citizens fork out millions for those who don't make a single meaningful contribution to this country?

J 11/14/2007 3:40:56 PM
I am pleasantly surprised by the amount of positive responses to this article (except for 1). Usually the response are so negative and petty, but these responses have actually put a smile on my face.

I'll happily donate some of the taxes I pay towards projects like this... Is there someone at the public access point to show people the ropes? Now next we need to provide free computer literacy classes. More people who become computer literate, the more skills, the bigger the tertiary sector of the economy, the stronger the economy, less unemployment, more equality - better life for all! This will be the fire that gets things cooking! :)

John 11/14/2007 3:53:42 PM
If the less fortunate use it then great. The people who can afford internet and use it are just exploiting the system. This I believe is step towards making our city a world class city.

SKEPTIK 11/14/2007 4:03:22 PM
THIS SERVICE IS ABOUT AS SLOW AS IT GETS. I've tried SmartCape at several libraries and it takes more than 2 MINUTES to open a single page. DONT BOTHER>!!

Me 11/14/2007 4:03:28 PM
Baby and all those who agree with her, I feel so sorry for you guys! Can you think of how this will help a lot of people who have been strugling to access the internet? Hopefully some they will even get jobs! get a life guys!
