Cape Town - The long-awaited Apple iPhone is expected to be launched in South Africa on Friday by Vodacom, the country's exclusive distributor of the 3G phone.

Although Vodacom Group's Group Communications Manager Marie-Louise Esterhuizen did not want to officially confirm the local release date with News24, it is an open secret that the big day will be 26 September.

Customers who pre-ordered the iPhone from Vodacom reportedly received emails to inform them of the release date and leaflets have been handed out by shops trading in Vodacom products, also announcing the iPhone's release date.

International launch

Furthermore, various blogs and websites have been abuzz with discussions around the release date of the hotly awaited communications device.

South Africans had been forced to wait for months to lay their hands on their own iPhone.

The phone was launched internationally on 11 July 2008 and the SA launch was originally expected to follow later in July.

New Zealanders were the first to be able to buy the phone.

They were followed shortly by Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Britain, the US and France.

No music downloads

Despite activation problems that frustrated thousands of buyers, Apple sold more than 1 million iPhone 3G cellphones on the launch weekend.

The new iPhone 3G updates the previous iPhone with much faster connection speeds and a built-in GPS, but many analysts believe the most significant update is the new software that allows users access to thousands of applications developed by third parties and available through Apple's online store.

These applications include games, photo-sharing and mobile versions of Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and eBay.

While local customers will reportedly not be able to download music on their iPhones, they will still have access to Apple's online store to download other applications.

New rival

In the meantime, Google has unveiled its rival to iPhone in New York on Tuesday.

The T-Mobile G1 phone, informally known as the Google phone, is built by Taiwanese firm HTC and has a touch-sensitive screen, a computer-like keyboard, high-speed internet browsing, Wi-Fi, e-mail and SMS texting and uses Google's new Android operating system.

It can also run applications such as Google Maps, Gmail and YouTube.

Every news report refers to the amazing Appstore with games etc. But the SA iTunes store does not have games. Why not? I have downloaded and used many other apps from the SA iTunes store on my iphone 2G. Even Sri Lanka and Malaysia's Appstores have games!

How much longer must us saffa's be left in the dark regarding iTunes store? We all loyally buy iPods and iPhones but when are we going to be able to listen to legal music bought from iTunes? how much longer must we wait???? Don't the record companies want to make money??? Come on Mr Jobs the apple is ripe for the plucking here in SA!!!!!!

    grim 9/25/2008 2:56:43 PM
Everyone get ready to get ripped of royaly by god old vadacom...The "BIG" build up for the iPhone has no doubt got every kid dying for one, but seriously it is a toy. Get a real phone like the HTC Diamond. Now that is a phone!

and the media is helping in the craziness about Apple's products. There are few touch phones that offer on par or superior functionality than the iphone. Try LG KU990, HTC touch, Samsung omnia, etc. The music they sell on itunes is also very expensive. Try legalsounds.com for music at a 10th of the price.

Sad phone.. SUCK speaker output... suck video formats, NOT DiVX complaint?!?! WTF?? And a GPS unit? Please! even Nokias (not a fan thereof) have built in GPS units. Camera... Suck! Sad phone indeed and old tech. Rather get the LG Viewty. Runs circles around iPhone!

    iphone user 9/25/2008 3:29:55 PM
Why are so many people giving opinions without ever having used (or seen!) an iPhone. Thanks for your opinions, but no thanks - I have had all the Nokias, Samsungs, etc - been on iPhone for last 8 months and will never go back...sometimes user experience beats functionality hands down.

    disgusted 9/25/2008 4:12:06 PM
Went to a vodashop today, and was told that the iphone would not be available on upgrade!!! WTF? Does vodacom seriously think that they can stab their loyal customers in the back, and tricking them into signing up for a new contract!

    colin 9/25/2008 5:28:15 PM
LOL....those dumbasses who are gonna go wait in line for an iphone...LOL...shame...it really is hard work being a fashion victim and an idiot to boot!....you see how much vodacom is gonna charge for 16g version...INSANE!...i can fly to america...buy one for myself, bring it back and still save money...almost 10 grand to buy over at our deep and closest friends at vodacom....what crap...SA consumer ripped off once again...

    Andries 9/25/2008 5:41:07 PM
Am amazed at you guys, wanting to compare Touch! and viewty with Iphone. Are you guys serious? I have a touch - and any windows mobile device is the worst junk out there! It is a joke in terms of design (sw that is). The Iphone is not about the specs - it is about the software. It is VASTLY superior in terms of user experience. Trust me - Unix is no toy. This market will pop. Bloomberg is already running on it.

    CE 9/25/2008 7:02:15 PM
I reside in the UK and make use of the 3G iphone. Do not get this phone...there is not enough space in this block to describe the problems with this phone...

    Gregory 9/25/2008 8:02:52 PM
Will be interesting to know how much we will pay for it in SA. Seeing that the iPhone retails for $199.00 (About R1800.00 without import tax)in the USA.

    Shix 9/26/2008 8:33:28 AM
I think the packages offered by Vodacom for the iPhone are absolutely ridiculous in price. Yes the phone is awesome but whose really prepared to pay a minimum of R450.00 per month. Absurd!!

    Eth 9/26/2008 9:58:21 AM
I have had and Iphone for a year now, and its more phone than an HTC will ever be. I will never be able to use a normal conventional cell phone again.
