Tokyo - Sony Computer Entertainment on Wednesday unveiled its new portable PlayStation game consoles to be marketed globally early next year aimed at a segment dominated by the Nintendo Gameboy.
Sony announced details of the PlayStation Portable, or PSP, saying it had online gaming capability and that its graphics and sound quality were better than the latest Gameboy.
The company is targeting first year worldwide sales of three million units of the portable device, which measures 17 centimetres by 7.4 centimetres and weighs 260 grams.
Sony will initially market the 32-megabyte consoles with colour screens and audio and video capability in Japan by the end of this year with sales planned for the US and European markets early next year, it said in a statement.
The global portable game console market is more than 95% dominated by Nintendo's GameBoy series, according to Sony.
