Meteor sends people running

2006-09-12 11:36

Wellington - A meteor entered the atmosphere over New Zealand on Tuesday creating a sonic boom that sent people running from their houses and was heard over 300 kilometres from Christchurch in the South Island to Wellington, news reports said.

Thousands of people in Christchurch telephoned emergency services to report the boom which shook houses and rattled windows, Radio New Zealand reported.

Some said they thought it was an earthquake or an aircraft exploding and eyewitnesses reported seeing a bright light streaking across the sky and plunging into a field.

Alan Gilmore, at the Mount John Observatory, Tekapo, said any object from space would cause a sonic boom when it came closer than 60 kilometres to the earth.

The Newstalk ZB radio network quoted a scientist as saying a meteorite landed in New Zealand about once a year. - Sapa-dpa

ZION@JS@@RAKKA+ZION 11/27/2009 says... There is physical evidence that the ice levels on Greenland are diminishing and fast. We can look at the ice cap of the South pole and compare the sizes as it was in recent years.(Greenlands) recession is obvious to the eye. The amount of Ice floating in the Arctic region is only a fraction of what it was. Earth google the amount of ice recession on Mount Everest and compare with photos in recent history. Now I dont know everything about global warming but if I have any doubts I research The subject on the internet and the sources are magnificent. Just by the way the CO2 emissions of global plantlife and animal tend to balance each other. So what happens to the surplus water from greenland, polar regions, Mt Everest. A point to ponder is one gallon of fuel supplies 20pounds of CO2.The additional mass comes from the atmospheric oxygen which is used in combustion. CO2 in the atmosphere remains there indeterminately. Read the article...
