Bloemfontein - Van Reenen's Pass between the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal was
reopened on Saturday afternoon after it had been closed earlier due
to heavy snow, police said.
Meanwhile, people in Gauteng have been treated to the unusual sight of light snow in certain places.
Captain Magda Kruger said the N3 highway between Kestell and
Harrismith in the Free State had also been reopened.
The road and the pass were closed early on Saturday morning after
heavy snowfalls overnight.
The Bergoord holiday resort in the Drakensberg near Warden would
also be reopened for visitors, she said.
She appealed to people not to travel unnecessarily on the roads in the area as they were unsafe because of ice.
The Weather Service earlier issued a warning for the Drakensberg area û where it was still snowing on Saturday morning - saying it would be very cold with a high chill-factor. The maximum temperature was expected to be only 7¦.
Snowfalls are also possible over Lesotho.
The Weather Service says very cold conditions are expected over the entire country, except for the coastal areas and the lowveld areas in the north-east.
Meanwhile, there is some good news for residents of Cape Town û no heavy rain is forecast for Saturday.
The city has recorded a 44-year-high July rainfall, and scores of informal settlement dwellers have had to leave their homes. They are being housed in community halls until mopping up operations are complete. - Sapa and News24
