Johannesburg - Not even two hours after Cope's Allan Boesak announced his resignation from the party on Tuesday, Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana issued a statement inviting him back to the ANC.

"Mdladlana says he wishes to remind Boesak about his home, the organisation with ideology and vision, the ANC," said Mdladlana.

The minister, who is also leader of the ANC Western Cape task team, "welcomed Boesak's move to disassociate himself [from] an ailing party".

"Cope is vague, lost and confused," said Mdladlana.

"Cope is just a party of silly desperados that's just playing on people's sentiments and working and operating outside the consciousness of the people of South Africa."

Cope 'in disarray'

Boesak quit the Congress of the People on Tuesday, saying its structures were in disarray.

"From the very beginning the party structures, such as they were, were characterised by faction fighting, strife, pitched battles for political supremacy and duplicity...

"At this point the party structures continue to be in disarray."

Boesak "expressly" said he did not want a leadership position in Cope when he joined it in December 2008.

"It was only after the severest pressures that I conceded to assist the party in the elections."

Deep resentment was caused within the party "by the irregularities with the list process and the interim leadership situation persisted and made normal work almost impossible," Boesak said.

In-fighting

This is an apparent reference to reports of in-fighting between Mvume Dandala - elected as Cope's presidential candidate - and party leader Mosiuoa Lekota.

Boesak said many "good, hard workers" in the party had been suspended because they dared to criticise the leadership.

"It seems that the mud is rising. I have no desire to subject my family, myself or my calling to serve our people to these sorts of indignities and destructive politicking."

Cope spokesperson Phillip Dexter brushed aside Boesak's criticism, saying it was never going to be easy to launch a new political party.

"We've received his resignation with regret. He joined the party when we launched... so obviously people had high hopes for his involvement.

"The kind of challenges he pointed out... are ordinary challenges when you are dealing with a new organisation.

"We wish him the best in his future endeavours," Dexter told Sapa.

Other Cope resignations

Boesak's resignation is not the first to hit the party that saw the light late last year under the leadership of ex-ANC veterans Lekota, Mluleki George and Mbhazima Shilowa.

The trio were all vocal supporters of ex-president Thabo Mbeki, who was ousted by the ruling party's national executive committee.

Two senior Cope leaders, Simon Grindrod and Lynda Odendaal, resigned in recent months, expressing disappointment with the way the party was being managed.

Cope is the third-biggest party in Parliament and has been increasingly working with the official opposition, the DA.

Boesak promised to "continue with my work in the civil society, in the church and as extraordinary professor at the University of Stellenbosch".

He said "working for the integrity of this democracy of the people of South Africa is what I have always been called to do", adding that he would return to work for the "globalisation project" with churches in South Africa and Germany.

"Here, as before, I can work with dignity and purpose."

Pray for Cope

In the meantime, he would continue to pray for Cope.

"My prayer is that Cope will find that hope and vision again and so fulfil the promise it had made to the people of South Africa now almost one year ago."

Boesak, who was convicted of fraud in 1999 but later pardoned, recently released his autobiography, "Running with Horses: Reflections of an Accidental Politician", in which he maintains his innocence in the fraud case.

The fraud and theft conviction related to more than R1.5m of foreign donor funds in the apartheid era.

Boesak was forced to delay the launch of the book when it emerged he would name some ANC members who allegedly received the money for which he went to jail. National Planning Minister Trevor Manuel demanded that some references to his family be removed and Boesak had to re-write a chapter of the book.

Home is where the heart is.. Swallow your pride n go back to ANC.

Draadsitter 11/3/2009 1:24:19 PM
...And in other news, COPE's credibility ratings have mysteriously suddenly tripled while simultaneously the ANC's instantly dropped by two thirds...

GJ 11/3/2009 1:26:44 PM
Fraudsters & corruptsters should find the ANC a warm & fuzzy home !

copper 11/3/2009 1:27:00 PM
If he leaves Cope to join the ANC, the IQ of Cope and the ANC will both rise. It's a good move!

kolobe 11/3/2009 1:29:31 PM
I agree with Boesak the way Mbazima and Dexter treated Comrade Terror was unfortunate.I still believe that they should have let him be the Party preseident like the people voted for him in Bloemfontein.

da da da dalema 11/3/2009 1:29:39 PM
smells of vrot fish to me...don't need crossover sneaky people in life.

nigel 11/3/2009 1:30:02 PM
Of course the ANC has offered to take him back, he has a criminal record.

Roland 11/3/2009 1:31:55 PM
Does it surprise us - NO! After all he said about the ANC, they want him back. All the ANC wants is the few additional votes that Boesak may get for them. If Cope was in such a mess, surely he as leader of the WC should have sorted out as that (to me) would be part of his position. Who actually cares - he will go wherever he thinks he will be able to get more publicity and money.

POST MY COMMENTS PLEASE 11/3/2009 1:35:10 PM
And the story gets interesting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The cheeze moved... 11/3/2009 1:37:16 PM
Now COPE has got my vote.

eugene 11/3/2009 1:38:53 PM
The ANC is making a mistake to welcome back this has-been. He can not commit to a cause. I don't trust him at all.

Ian 11/3/2009 1:48:29 PM
His true home is certainly in the ANC. I remember when a certain ANC politician made the statement, "I did not join the struggle to remain poor". The truth is that none of them did. Unfortunately their riches have been made by generally corrupt means and a lack of sensitivity to the poor who are too brainwashed to see any light. Manuel's statement after the purchase of his BMW says it all. "An error of judgement, but now let's just get on with it" If only we could Dyflea down to catch and kill these roving ticks on "our" taxi!

ConcernedChristian 11/3/2009 1:50:23 PM
Alan, follow your calling (being a man of the cloth) and honour your statement "I have no desire to subject my family, myself or my calling to serve our people to these sorts of indignities and destructive politicking."

Politics and religion is not a good mix. No harm in praying for the politicians, they do need it. The only golden pot a clergy's hand should be in, is the communion chalice.

Marloma 11/3/2009 1:50:38 PM
Were the 'extreme pressures' put on him by Cope to assume a leadership position green backs, cars, etc. Probably all of them. They (Cope) probably saw through your lying scheming facade. I dont have any respect for Boesak, he stole another man's wife and this poor man only found it out when he read the news (as a newsreader) on National TV, I will never forget the look of devastation on this poor man's face before he broke down.

Anon 11/3/2009 1:50:59 PM
What a pity cope is floundering. I can't stand the ANC and its arrogance and the DA is no competition. Hopefully soon another party will emerge, a party of proper decent people (not like Boesak) who will challenge the ANC on a competitive level. We need this badly, right now the ANC runs SA like a rogue state. Just look at how much the 'ministers' put up their salaries by last year when everyone else was losing their jobs.

morena 11/3/2009 1:56:19 PM
haaa haa boesak says he never joined cope for posions LMAO who are you fooling maybe your congregation but not me, you so cleary an opportunist but hey i don't blame you thats what seems to be ruling SA at the moment but please don't come and lie to us about why you joined cope

Geldsak 11/3/2009 2:01:06 PM
And the anc will take him back because then he will feeel at home with his other thieving friends

Bradley 11/3/2009 2:02:29 PM
Ag... All of you, get off your high horses, We are all in this together, Boesak is just another man, the ANC is just another party, people will make the difference if we decide to change and move forward. In any case, Boesak is not a admiral person, he is the one who made everyone stand up for human rights and him and his family sat safe at home.

Allan left before the storming was over - or is that the beginning of norming.

No matter. No mud slinging from Cope supporters here. All the best Allan, it was good to have you on board. Now, back to business.

DALEMA 11/3/2009 2:12:14 PM
Ja Nee funny he jumps from ship to ship smells like fishy business.

Kenzito 11/3/2009 2:22:19 PM
I am a member of this movement and like it. But after announcing that they're just about to merge or form a coalition with DA, I have no alternative but to be party-less. To whoever came up with this idea, please note that we didn't join COPE because we're desperate or disgruntled as the ANC people think, we were looking for an alternative party. If you guys see it fit to join forces with DA then please delete my name on your database. This party is racist. They want to bring back apartheid.

Kokkie 11/3/2009 2:24:08 PM
Twins....no, no, no! You are making a mistake. For Allan Boesak home is not where the heart is. It is indeed where the money and the positions are. What did the ANC offer the Reverend this time? A ride on the gravy train ?

Onele 11/3/2009 2:30:05 PM
Initial stages are never easy my fiends in anything...Good luck Mr Boesak I hope you don't quite easily wherever and in what you going to do..

Vezarigo 11/3/2009 2:33:54 PM
Allan is worst than a serial killer that hides dehind a prist gown.

You are narrowing your options and soon you will reliase that you are on your own.

Your reasons for leaving Cope are merely indicators of how weak you have become both as a politician and as a Christian.
The best that you can do for yourself is to go back to Church. God will forever have a place for you and will has already forgiven you for being an opportunist for wrong reasons.

As for me I can only praise our almighty God for you have left COPE because you were in anyway dysfunctional as a COPE member.

Huggo 11/3/2009 2:37:58 PM
Did you guys read the section on "other Cope resignations" - were these people also fraudsters? It is time everyone accepts Cope for who they are. Even the "infighting" in the ANC has now subsided after the formation of Cope...

Leutle Radingoane 11/3/2009 2:41:41 PM
No one will remain in the cope camp this party lack vision and values, many more are coming out watch this space

AD 11/3/2009 2:41:52 PM
It's only natural that the ANC would want a convicted criminal back in their ranks. The existing crimnals in the ANC will feel very comfortable with him. Maybe there are couple of things about fraud that he can teach them.

JabbaTheHutt 11/3/2009 2:51:17 PM
Why now, Allan? Realized there's nothing to steal at Cope? I believe the ANC has the perfect job opening for you: National Corruption and Embezzlement Quality Control Officer. Maybe now COPE will get some credibility back.

GW 11/3/2009 2:51:19 PM
Boesak Shabir, 2 peas in a pod !!!!!!

Kaltie 11/3/2009 2:56:57 PM
Cope got rid of this criminal, now get rid of Miss R 4.5m Boeing, and the party is on it's way to get credibility. The rejects are welcome at the corrupt ANC.

Vezarigo 11/3/2009 3:01:48 PM
I HOPE MEMBATHISI MDLADLANA HAS RECEIVED PERMISSION FROM MALEMA BEFORE ANNOUNCING THAT THE ANC WOULD WELCOME BOESAK BACK TO IT'S TURF.

REMEMBER THAT MALEMA DICTATES ALL THE ANC'S MOVES.

Sceptical 11/3/2009 3:08:04 PM
The ANCorrupters gave him presidential pardon. Eat the dirt!

PETER 11/3/2009 3:15:11 PM
He must just go back to ANC as an ordinary member as you can not trust him.He must prove that what ever he does is to improve the lives of ordinary people, not for himself.

Zabantu 11/3/2009 3:25:20 PM
The formation of COPE was bound to hit a block. A party formed on the basis of anger against another party becomes a collection of angry people with different basis of anger and different expectations of how the anger will the directed. Can anyone help me understand what else COPE strives for except to oppose the ANC? A party of angry people will soon loose sight of the real issues and the logical solution therein. Are we now suggesting that no one could foresee the challenges facing COPE? Was this about a free ride where everyone agrees with the next angry person??...dream on.

GEE 11/3/2009 3:30:15 PM
we are not suprised.come 2010 we will hear terror lekota retire from politics then mbhazima going the business route.

Humbulani 11/3/2009 3:32:25 PM
Most of people who joined COPE did that in order to find an alternative from the ruling party and the official opposition party; its time that the other party identify the weakness in order to be credible;
However; the ruling party is doing a lot for the people of this country compare to non after the previous regime.

toc 11/3/2009 3:32:45 PM
Good he goes. We need truly resilient leaders in the party. Boesak was all about the hype before the elections. Now the going gets tough and the tough gets going. Behind Cope all the way, ANC and media will always try to make a meal of this situation, but we all know they are scared Cope can bounce back to compete heavily. Considering the ay things are going in the Alliance, over disagreement in policy, I see Cope growing further. Watch this space, Tokyo, Phosa & Motsepe are next to join Cope....

Andrew Madella 11/3/2009 3:47:41 PM
Boesak has a political history and his contribution to our liberation struggle is commendable. His political home has always been the ANC and I certainly wish to urge him to come home!Let's all join hands to build our movement into a formidable responsive vehicle able to unite our people and create conditions for a better life for all!

wish 11/3/2009 4:11:14 PM
Boesak's home is the UDF - but the ANC has erased all memories of other liberation movements!
