Cape Town - The official opposition was on Tuesday accused of "fowl play", with the African National Congress claiming it was trying to "strip away people's dignity" with a food voucher from a popular fried chicken franchise.
ANC Western Cape spokesperson Bukeka Dekeda-Dlilanga said the Democratic Alliance had been putting election pamphlets, together with a Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) voucher, into post boxes in Athlone and other areas of the Cape Flats.
"The DA can do all South Africans a favour and stop insulting our people. They definitely do not have to give people food in exchange for votes. This is an insult! Our people cannot be bribed with food," he said.
However, DA spokesperson Robin Carlise denied the party was handing out food vouchers, saying its election leaflets were distributed by a company that often handed out retail pamphlets at the same time.
"We do it through a professional company... for some reason there must have been a KFC voucher in there this time. We hope that every voter, in addition to voting DA, also enjoys their chicken," he chuckled.
