ANC: Probe Zuma 'mole' report

Johannesburg - The origin of a "top secret" document on African National Congress deputy president Jacob Zuma should be investigated as a priority, the party said on Tuesday.

"The ANC regards this matter as serious," the ANC national working committee said in a statement.

"Until and unless a definitive report has been made by the relevant authority, the ANC regards this document as without standing and will not lend any credence to the claims contained therein."

The committee met in Johannesburg on Monday.

Media reports have pointed to the "Special Browse 'Mole' Consolidated Report" report which claimed that Zuma was being bankrolled by Libyan and Angolan leaders to oust President Thabo Mbeki.

The ANC said of similar concern were recent reports of claims of a plot to assassinate Zuma.

The committee urged ANC members and supporters to be "wary of any attempts by forces outside the movement to cultivate a climate of suspicion and intrigue" while the matters were investigated.

"Cadres of the movement are called upon to exercise discipline and restraint."

"The ANC views these reports in a serious light as they impact on the life and personal safety of a senior leader in the movement."

According to media reports, the secret report was sent to the Congress of SA Trade Unions on May 7 by anonymous fax, and posted to the federation's offices.
