Pietermaritzburg - Jacob Zuma arrived amid singing and ululation at the Pietermaritzburg High Court shortly before 09:00 on Tuesday.
Court staff leaned out of the windows of the court buildings and joined the chorus of support for the former deputy president as he entered through a back entrance.
Prayers were offered and a mound of izimphephu traditional herbs were lit for him by his supporters at the court gates.
Wearing a dark blue suit and a red tie Zuma waved and hugged some of the people waiting to greet him.
On Tuesday Zuma's legal team will try to have his corruption case thrown out of court while the State will seek a postponement of the trial until next year.
Zuma's co-accused, the two Thint companies, would also be seeking to have their case thrown out of court.
Zuma is accused of having accepted a R500 000 a year bribe from Thint in exchange for protection in the arms deal probe.
