Durban - A security guard was killed in a cash-in-transit heist near Durban on the N3 on Wednesday, police said.
Superintendent Henry Budhram confirmed the shooting, but could not immediately provide details.
Sapa has learnt that a van from Group 4 Security had stopped to collect cash from a BP Express store at the BP Oasis garage on the N3.
As a security guard emerged from the store, he was shot in the neck and dropped the cash box.
His attackers grabbed the box and fled.
It is not immediately known how much cash was in the box or how many attackers there were.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said that the policeman was rushed to the nearby Camperdown police station where a helicopter was to airlift him to hospital.
However, before the helicopter could take off, the security guard died and was declared dead at the police station.
