Pretoria - "Minister (Charles) Nqakula's words are farcical and I think it is high time for the people to claim their rights and demand action.
"All those nice-sounding words of his in the newspaper do not mean a thing," says Magda Visagie of Centurion after husband Joe, 52, was shot in the stomach in a robbery at their home on Wednesday evening.
Magda's reaction came after Safety and Security Minister Nqakula said South Africa was becoming a safer place.
Visagie, a senior SABC sports manager, his wife and their 20-year-old daughter were packaging dried boerewors and biltong in their garage when they were attacked by four armed men.
Magda said: "After they shot Joe, he was bleeding from his stomach, but ran to the safe to get his firearm.
In a serious condition
"When he got outside, the robbers had fled.
"The gang took my wedding rings and then fled in a white Audi."
Visagie was on a ventilator and in a serious condition on Thursday in Kloof Medi-Clinic in Centurion.
Magda said: "His colon has been damaged and he was also hit in the bladder."
She said this was their third burglary.
"The first time, there were people in our house while we were sleeping and, two years ago, a burglar was wounded in the house."
