Johannesburg - A refrigerator truck was hijacked by a group of armed men at the Marlboro off-ramp in Sandton on Thursday, Johannesburg police said.
"The truck was on its way to deliver ice-cream and meat at designated shops and butcheries at noon," said Captain Piet Mnyakeni.
The men, driving two bakkies, a white Ford Bantam and a blue Nissan 1400, stopped the truck and instructed the driver to get out.
The armed robbers drove the truck to Edenvale where they negotiated with two security guards to park the bakkies inside a construction site they were guarding, in exchange for some of the meat and ice-cream, said Mnyakeni.
A tracker system led police to the area around 14:00, but the robbers had already driven away in the truck.
Police impounded the two bakkies, and a gun was found inside one of them.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the white Ford Bantam was stolen in Norkempark in February 2006.
Mnyakeni said both security guards, aged 28, were arrested and charged for possession of an unlicenced firearm, possession of a suspected stolen vehicle, and hijacking.
They would appear in the Germiston Magistrate's Court soon.
No further arrests were made, said Mnyakeni.
