Bloemfontein - The identity of a man who was killed in the tiger enclosure
in the Bloemfontein zoo remained a mystery on Monday.
Captain Elsa Gerber said police had received three inquiries, but the body
had still not been identified.
A post-mortem would probably be done on Wednesday.
Gerber said staff at the
mortuary were very busy following the weekend's bus accident at nearby
Wepener, in which 21 people were killed.
A Port Elizabeth man who read Monday's report on the internet phoned to find
out whether the man was his brother, who was in his early thirties and in the SANDF in Bloemfontein.
The brother was expected at his parents' home in Port Elizabeth on Thursday
for the Christmas holidays.
His family cannot reach him on his cellphone,
and he was last seen at work on Thursday, the day he should have left.
The brother said the family were not able to travel to Bloemfontein yet to
identify the body.
The man's naked body was found in the tiger enclosure on Sunday morning.
It
had bite marks to the neck.
A visitor who saw it in a ditch in the enclosure
called for help.
The man's shoes and torn clothing were found in the
enclosure.
It was not clear how the man ended up in the enclosure.
Staff said he must
have fallen about 10m into the enclosure.
