Durban - A motorist was shot dead by three gunmen at a traffic intersection in Durban on Thursday, police said.
Inspector Rani John said the man, driving a Hyundai Tuscon, was shot moments after bringing his vehicle to a halt at traffic lights in Northdene suburb.
As he stopped, three men in a white BMW came up the offramp from the M7 highway and fired shots at the man.
The men then jumped out of the car and pulled the driver out of the vehicle.
John said the attackers were searching the car when they saw an approaching police van.
Took packets out of vehicle
They opened fire on the van before removing some "packets" from the Tuscon and driving off.
John did not know what was in the packets.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said the man died at the traffic lights shortly after paramedics arrived.
The police's serious and violent crimes unit was investigating.
